Physical and Environmental Characteristics

Power Source

Power is supplied to the BMP®21-PLUS/BMP®21-LAB Label Printer by six AA alkaline batteries, a BMP21-PLUS-BATT Lithium Ion battery pack, or by an AC power adapter.

To maintain maximum printer performance, use basic AA alkaline batteries, NOT rechargeable (Ultimate Lithium) AA batteries.

The optional Li-Ion battery pack is rechargeable, but must be removed from the printer and attached to the AC power adapter for charging to take place.

The AC power adapter is used to recharge the Li-ion battery pack outside the printer, but it can also be used to power the BMP®21-PLUS printer without batteries.

WARNING

Do not expose batteries to temperatures above 60C (140F). Do not disassemble or mistreat the battery pack.

Do not attempt to open, damage, or replace components in the battery pack.

The Battery Pack should only be used in the BMP®21-PLUS/BMP®21-LAB Label Printer.

Do not use any other rechargeable battery pack other than the BMP21-PLUS-BATT supplied for the BMP®21-PLUS/BMP®21-LAB Label Printer.

Do not allow metal or other conductive materials to touch the battery terminals.

WARNING

Keep the battery pack away from sparks, flames, or other heat sources. Keep the battery pack away from water.

Never lay objects on top of the battery pack. Store your battery pack only in a cool, dry place. Keep the battery pack out of the reach of children.

Special precautions should be taken when handling the battery pack during disposal to prevent impact to the cells.

The battery pack must be recycled or disposed of properly according to federal, state, and municipal regulations.

WARNING

Do not dismantle, open or shred cells or batteries.

Do not expose cells or batteries to heat or fire. Avoid storage in direct sunlight.

Do not short-circuit a cell or a battery. Do not store cells or batteries haphazardly in a box or drawer where they may short-circuit each other or be short-circuited by other metal objects.

Do not remove a cell or battery from its original packaging until required for use. Do not subject cells or batteries to mechanical shock.

In the event of a cell leaking, do not allow the liquid to come in contact with the skin or eyes. If contact has been made, wash the affected area with copious amounts of water and seek medical advice.

Do not use any charger other than that specifically provided for use with the equipment.

Observe the plus (+) and minus (-) marks on the cell, battery and equipment and ensure correct use.

Do not use any cell or battery which is not designed for use with the equipment. Do not mix cells of different manufacture, capacity, size, or type.

When using alkaline cells, always use fresh, new batteries and never mix used batteries with new batteries.

Keep cells and batteries out of the reach of children.

Seek medical advice immediately if a cell or a battery has been swallowed. Keep cells and batteries clean and dry.

Wipe the cell or battery terminals with a clean dry cloth if they become dirty.

The BMP21-PLUS-BATT battery pack needs to be charged before use. Always use the correct charger and refer to the manual included with the pack.

After extended periods of storage, it may be necessary to charge the battery pack to obtain maximum performance.

Batteries give their best performance when they are operated at normal room temperature (20 °C ± 5 °C, 68°F ± 41°F).

Retain the original product literature for future reference.

Recycling the Label Cartridge

Recycling the Label Cartridge

Cartridges need to be recycled in accordance with local regulations. Before recycling, the used cartridges must be pulled apart to release the individual components. These various components must then be recycled in the correct recycling bins.

CAUTION

ALWAYS wear Personal Protective Equipment when dismantling a cartridge.

Dismantling the Cartridge

To dismantle the cartridge:

1.Using the flathead screwdriver, pry off the chip (smart cell) on the bottom of the cartridge by placing the screwdriver blade under a corner of the chip and lifting up.

The chip is glued on and should release fairly easy.

Recycling the Label Cartridge

To open the cartridge:

2.Starting at the narrow end of the cartridge, insert the flathead screwdriver into the seam of the cartridge, then twist the screwdriver slightly to loosen the two outside pieces of molding.

3.Repeat at various points on the seam until you can separate the top of the molding from the base.

4.Turn the base of the cartridge upside down and shake gently. Most of the components will fall out of the cartridge. If not, unhook and pull the components away from the molding.

To preserve battery life, when the printer detects a time of inactivity, it automatically shuts down. Any data on the screen at the time of auto shutdown is retained and available the next time the [Power] key is pressed to restart the printer.

The first time the printer is turned on, you may want to choose a language in which to display screen items. Language selection is obtained from the Menu function. (For more information, see “Selecting a Language” on page 25.)

Whenever the printer is powered on, the system performs an initialization process. Part of this process is recognizing the media installed. While it is possible to power on the printer without installing media, you must insert a media cartridge in order to continue.
