INTRODUCTION

This manual describes the process of installing the ORION® handheld meter reading system software and includes the
following two main sections:

• Uninstalling Previous Software Versions

• Installing ORION Meter Reading System Software for Trimble Ranger, including ORION Field Application (OFA) 2.2

AUDIENCE AND PURPOSE

Instructions are included for existing Trimble® Ranger handheld users who are updating to OFA 2.2 software, and for users
who are installing OFA 2.2 for the first time.

NOT: N To provide the best solution for our customers, Badger Meter continually improves software programs and updates

this Installation Manual to reflect upgrades. Therefore, some discrepancies may be detected between the installed
software and this manual.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

The handheld must meet the system specifications as identified in the most recent version of the “ORION Trimble Ranger
Handheld” Technical Brief, ORI-T-56.

OFA 2.2 requires a the handheld with a Windows® Mobile 5 operating system or newer to run correctly. The Mobile operating
system version number is displayed on the About screen. You can access the About screen by going to Start> Settings>
System tab> About.

UNINSTALLING PREVIOUS SOFTWARE VERSIONS ON THE HANDHELD

Before installing the new software, uninstall any older versions of the software on the handheld.

The Factory Reset method (1) is recommended. Read the descriptions below and choose the appropriate procedure based on
your handheld setup.

1. Uninstalling the Previous Software Using Factory Reset (Recommended)

Factory reset is the recommended method for uninstalling the previous version of the meter reading software. This
procedure resets the Trimble Ranger to "factory fresh" condition and removes all previously added software. Refer to
"Uninstalling Previous Software Using Factory Reset" on page 7.

CAUTION: If you previously added software to the handheld that you do not want to remove, use the Alternative
method, "Uninstalling Previous Software Using Remove Programs" on page 8.

2. Uninstalling the Previous Software Using Remove Programs (Alternative)

This procedure uses the Windows tool, "Remove Programs," for uninstalling the previous meter reading software
version. Remove Programs allows you to select the programs you want to uninstall. It can be used when the
handheld has other software that you do not want to remove. Refer to "Uninstalling Previous Software Using Remove
Programs" on page 8.

3. (Kiosk mode) Uninstalling the Previous Software

For handhelds in Kiosk mode, use procedure 1, "Uninstalling Previous Software Using Factory Reset" on page 7, to
uninstall previous Kiosk software and all other previously added software.

If you previously added software to the handheld that you do not want to remove, use the instructions "Uninstalling
Previous Software from Kiosk Mode" on page 9.

No Previous Software

If there is no previous version of the ORION meter reading software on the handheld, skip the uninstall procedures and go
directly to "Installing the ORION Meter Reading Software for the Trimble Ranger" on page 12.

Uninstalling Previous Software Using Factory Reset

Start the factory reset uninstall procedure with the handheld powered on.

NOT:N Read through all the steps before you start since you must be prepared to perform the first two steps quickly.

CAUTION: If you previously added software to the handheld that you do not want to remove, use the Alternative

method, "Uninstalling Previous Software Using Remove Programs" on page 8.

1. Press and hold the green power button in lower left corner of the handheld keypad. When the countdown nishes
and the screen goes blank, release the power button.

2. When you hear a beep, immediately press and hold the Fn+ F+D keys.

Release the keys when you hear another beep.

3. The Restore Factory Default State screen displays asking if you want to continue. Press ENTER.

Result: The handheld automatically reboots and displays the Windows Mobile screen.

4. Tap the screen to start the reset process.

5. Align the touch screen by tapping the cross hairs. Continue to tap the cross hairs until the screen aligns.

Result: The Location screen displays.

6. On the Location screen, use the drop-down menu to select the correct time zone. Then tap Next.

7. At the Password screen, tap Skip.

Result: The Complete screen displays.

8. Tap the screen to complete the reset.

The handheld is now ready for the new software installation. Refer to "Installing ORION Meter Reading Software for the
Trimble Ranger" on page 12.

Uninstalling Previous Software Using Remove Programs

1. Press the green power key on the keypad to power
up the handheld.

2. Tap the Start button in the top left corner of
the handheld screen to see the menu.

3. Tap Settings, tap the System tab and tap Remove
Programs.

Result: The Remove Programs screen opens.

4. Tap to select the le labeled "Badger Meter, Inc
Badger Field Ap…" le. Then tap the Remove
button.

Result: A window opens to conrm the removal as
shown in Figure 3.

5. Tap Yes to conrm the program removal.

6. The "Microsoft.NET CF 3.5" le may also display on
the Remove Programs screen. If it does, tap to select
it.

7. Then tap the Remove button and tap Yes to conrm
the program removal.

Once the previous software programs are uninstalled, the handheld is ready for the new software installation. Refer to
"Installing ORION Meter Reading Software for the Trimble Ranger" on page 12.

Uninstalling Previous Software from Kiosk Mode

NOT:N This procedure is only for handhelds in Kiosk mode.

Operating the handheld in Kiosk mode, the main handheld screen appears as it does in Figure 4.

To uninstall the previous software on a handheld in Kiosk mode, follow these steps.

NOT:N You can also uninstall Kiosk software by using the procedure "Uninstalling the Previous Software Using Factory Reset"

on page 7. However, if there is software on the handheld other than the ORION software that you do not want to
remove, use this procedure.

1. Tap the screen to the right of the words "Badger
Trimble Ranger" in the title bar.

Result: The Unlock button appears.

3. Type in the code to unlock the handheld.

NOT:N If you do not have the code, contact

Badger Meter Technical Support for the
code to unlock Kiosk mode.

Result: When the handheld is unlocked, it returns to
Admin mode and the Windows start menu is displayed
as shown in Figure 7.

4. Tap Settings on the Windows Start menu.

5. Tap the System tab. Then tap Remove Programs.

6. Tap "Askarya Pocket Kiosk."

Then tap Remove.

7. Tap Yes to conrm the program removal.

8. Tap to select each remaining program.

For each program, tap Remove. Then tap Ye s to
confirm the program removal

9. When all programs are removed, tap ok to exit
Remove Programs.

Once the previous software programs are uninstalled, the handheld is ready for the new software installation. Refer to
"Installing ORION Meter Reading Software for the Trimble Ranger" on page 12.

INSTALLING ORION METER READING SOFTWARE ON THE HANDHELD

The ORION Meter Reading System software comes loaded on one CD provided by Badger Meter. Three software files are
included on the CD:

• 0 – .NET framework

• 1 – Badger Field Applications. These include:

- ORION Field Application (OFA) 2.2

- ORION CE Profile Extraction

- ORION Endpoint Utility

- ORION CE Repeater Programmer

- IHD Programmer

- GALAXY Programmer

- BMI FTP

• 2 – Daylight Savings update

IMPORTANT

The files must be installed in order: 0, 1, 2.

Transferring Software Files from the CD to a USB Memory Stick

1. Load the ORION Meter Reading System CD on a computer with a CD drive.

2. The CD folder may open automatically. If not, open Windows Explorer, browse to the CD drive location and open the
CD folder.

Result: Three les labeled 0, 1 and 2 will be displayed as shown in Figure 11.

3. Insert a memory stick into the USB port on the computer.

4. Select the three .cab les from the CD and copy them to the memory stick.

Result: The ORION Meter Reading System software files on the memory stick are ready to be installed on the handheld.

5. Safely remove the memory stick from the computer.

Installing Meter Reading Software on the Handheld

1. Insert the memory stick with the software files into the USB port on the handheld.

2. Tap Start > Programs > File Explorer.

3. Tap the drop-down menu in the tool bar and select Hard Disk.

NOT:N If the memory stick is not inserted, Hard Disk does not display.

4. Tap Hard Disk to see the software les.

IMPORTANT

Make sure you install the three files in order: 0, 1, 2.

5. Tap to select the rst le labeled "0 NETCFv35.
wm.arm.v4i."

Result: The file location window opens as shown in
Figure 15 on the next page.

6. Select Device for the install location.

Result: The le installs automatically.

7. After the "0" le installs, a screen displays with the option to restart or continue as shown in Figure 16.
Tap Cancel to continue.

Result: The software selection screen displays again.

8. Tap to select the second le labeled "1 Badger
Field Applications."

Result: The le location window opens.

9. Select Device to install as in step 6.

Result: The le installs automatically and a
successful installation window opens as shown in
Figure 18 on the next page.

10. Tap ok in the top right corner of the screen.

Result: The software selection screen displays again.

11. Tap to select and install the last le labeled "2 Daylight Savings Fixer_WIn..."

Result: The last file installs. When the window closes, the system automatically reboots and returns to the start screen.

NOT:N If the system does not reboot, restart the handheld prior to opening any software applications. To restart,

press and hold the green power key. The screen will show a countdown timer. Continue holding the power
key until the countdown is completed. The handheld will automatically restart.

12. Tap Start > Programs > File Explorer > Badger
File Apps to access the software les as shown in
Figure 20.

The software applications on the handheld are now
ready to use.

13. Remove the memory stick from the handheld.

Kiosk Mode

After the meter reading software installation is complete, the Kiosk mode application is located in the My Documents folder
and can be activated from that location.

1. Go to Start > Programs > File Explorer > My Device > My Documents.

2. Tap the le "KioskMode_Badger_Field_A..." to install Kiosk mode.

Result: Kiosk mode installs automatically.

After the program installs, the software applications on the handheld are ready to use.
