MegaRAID SAS 9280-8e and SAS 9280DE-8e RAID Controllers
Quick Installation Guide
Thank you for purchasing the MegaRAID® SAS 9280-8e or SAS 9280DE-8e (Disk Encryption) RAID controller. Before you install your RAID controller, please take a few minutes to read this quick installation guide. For more information about any topic covered in this guide, refer to the related documents on your MegaRAID Universal Software Suite CD.
: Record your controller serial number in a safe
Note
location in case you need to contact LSI.
The SAS (Serial-attached SCSI/SATA) 9280-8e and SAS 9280DE-8e RAID controllers are PCI-Express 2.0, low-profile RAID controllers based on the SAS2108, which is a SAS/ SATA RAID On-a-Chip device. These RAID controllers control eight external 6-Gb/s SAS/SATA ports through two SFF-8088 x4 Mini SAS internal connectors.
: The only difference between the controllers is that
Note
the SAS 9280DE-8e RAID controller offers data security through disk encryption.
: SATA II is the only type of SATA supported by
Note
these RAID controllers.
You can connect the LSI intelligent Battery Backup Unit 07 (LSIiBBU07) directly or remotely to your RAID controller. For more information about this battery, refer to iBBU07 section in the Intelligent Battery Backup Units for 1078-based
MegaRAID Products User’s Guide on the MegaRAID Universal Software Suite CD.
Step 1 Unpack the RAID Controller
Unpack the RAID controller in a static-free environment. Remove it from the antistatic bag, and inspect it for damage. If the RAID controller appears to be damaged, or if the MegaRAID Universal Software Suite CD is missing, contact LSI or your MegaRAID OEM support representative.
The CD contains utility programs, device drivers for various operating systems, and the following documentation:

Step 2 Prepare the Computer
Turn off the computer, and unplug the power cords from the rear of the power supply. Remove the cover from the computer.
Before you install the RAID controller, make sure that the computer is disconnected from the power and from any networks.
Step 3 Review the Jumpers and the Connectors
Figure 1 shows the location of the jumpers and
the connectors on the RAID controller. The jumpers are set at the factory, and you usually do not need to change them.
