Introduction

Overview

The CS1942DP / CS1944DP 2/4-Port USB 3.0 4K DisplayPort Dual Display KVMP™ Switch takes a giant leap forward in KVM switch functionality by combining a Dual Display KVM switch with a DisplayPort video interface, 2-port USB 3.1 Gen 1 hub and 2.1 channel audio support for rich bass in surround sound. DisplayPort technology provides a 4K UHD @ 60 Hz and 4K DCI @ 60Hz resolution that displays the most vivid high-definition images available while pumping out premium sound for music, movies, and games.
The CS1942DP / CS1944DP allows users to access two or four DisplayPort computers from a single USB keyboard, USB mouse and two DisplayPort monitors. In addition to the front panel pushbuttons, Hotkeys, and the mouse port-switching functionality, the CS1942DP / CS1944DP offers serial commands to help switch ports and configure device settings. A Power On Detection feature also ensures that if one computer is powered off, the CS1942DP / CS1944DP will automatically switch ports to the next powered­on computer.
With a built-in USB 3.1 Gen 1 hub, the CS1942DP / CS1944DP provides SuperSpeed 5 Gbps transfer rates to all connected USB peripherals. The unit’s independent (asynchronous) switching feature, allows the KVM focus to be on one computer while the USB peripheral focus is on another computer. This eliminates the need to purchase a separate USB hub or stand-alone peripheral sharer – such as a print server, modem splitter, etc.
Featuring an unbeatable combination of ultra high 4K resolutions, a next generation USB 3.1 Gen 1 hub and enhanced, user-friendly operations, the CS1942DP / CS1944DP delivers the latest innovations in desktop KVM switching technology.

Note: 1. Mouse port switching is only supported under mouse emulation
mode with a USB 3-button mouse wheel.
2. Slide the DCC switch to the s position to allow the KVM switch to receive RS-232 commands via an RJ-45-to-DB9 cable. Please refer to the CS1942DP_CS1944DP RS-232 Commands document.
3. HD audio through DisplayPort cannot be switched independently.
4. MST (Multi-Stream Transport) requires either monitors capable of DisplayPort 1.2 daisy-chaining, or use of a powered DisplayPort MST Hub. A DisplayPort v1.1a display can be the last display in a DisplayPort v1.2 chain. The PC source must be DisplayPort 1.2 compliant.
5. DisplayPort Dual-Mode technology (DP++) does not require an active adapter for most single display setups. Active DisplayPort adapters are recommended if you are unsure of the video source's DP++ compatibility.
6. PC keyboard combinations emulate Mac keyboards. Mac keyboards only work with their own operating system.

Cables

To guarantee video quality, we recommend using only ATEN DisplayPort KVM cables which are certified by the VESA Compliance Program. Four (CS1942DP) or eight (CS1944DP) cables are provided with this package.
Note: 1. The quality of the display is affected by the quality of the cables.
We recommend the total length from the source to the monitor to not exceed 6.5 meters (1.5 meters between the PC and the KVM switch. 5 meters between the KVM switch and the monitor). If you need additional cables, please contact your dealer to purchase ATEN approved cables.
2. If you are using DisplayPort cables that are only DP 1.1 compliant, make sure the DisplayPort EQ setting of the monitor is set to auto or DP 1.1.

status. The Mode and Port Selection Pushbuttons have three corresponding LED icons that light to indicate status – KVM, Audio, and USB.
For manual port selection (see Manual Switching, page 17):
Press a port selection pushbutton for longer than two seconds to
bring the KVM, USB hub, and audio focus to the computer attached to its corresponding port.
Press a port selection pushbutton twice to bring the audio focus
to the computer attached to its corresponding port.
Press a switch for less than two seconds to bring only the KVM
focus to the computer attached to its corresponding port.
Press switches 1 and 2 simultaneously for 2 seconds to start

6 DCC Switch This switch is used to specify the Host and Client
when setting up two units in Quad-Display DCC mode. See Quad-Display (DCC Mode), page 14 for instructions.

Chapter 2
1. Important safety information regarding the placement of this device is provided on page 39. Please review it before proceeding.
2. Make sure that power to all the devices you will be installing has been turned off. You must unplug the power cords of any computers that have the Keyboard Power On function.
Hardware Setup

Cable Connections

To set up your installation, refer to the installation diagram on the following page (the numbers in the diagram on page 13 correspond to the steps below), and do the following:
1. Plug the USB keyboard and USB mouse into the USB console ports located on the unit’s rear panel.
2. Plug your console monitor(s) into the DisplayPort console ports located on the unit’s rear panel and power on the monitors.
3. Plug your microphone and speakers into the console microphone and speaker jacks located on the unit’s front panel. Audio cables are required on the CPU side for this connection to work.
4. Plug your microphone and speakers into the audio console ports located on the unit’s rear panel. The microphone and speakers plugged into the front panel have priority over those plugged into the rear panel.
5. Using the DisplayPort cable, plug the DisplayPort connector into an available DisplayPort “A” socket on the KVM port section of the switch (CPU 1, CPU 2, etc.), then plug the USB 3.0 cable, microphone/speaker cables into their corresponding sockets. Using another DisplayPort cable, plug the DisplayPort cable connector into DisplayPort Socket B in the same KVM port section of the switch.
6. At the other end of the cables from step 4, plug the microphone/speaker cables into their respective ports on the computer.

7. At the other end of the DisplayPort cable and USB 3.0 cable from step 5, plug the DisplayPort cable into its respective port on the computer. Repeat steps 5, 6, and 7 for each dual screen PC system you are installing.
8. (Optional) Plug your USB peripherals into the front or rear USB peripheral ports.
9. Plug the power adapter that came with your switch into an AC power source, then plug the power adapter cable into the switch’s Power Jack.
10. Power on the computers.
Note: 1. By default, the switch links to the first computer that is powered
on.
2. The total cable length from the PC to monitor (including KVM) cannot exceed 6.5 meters.
3. Choosing high quality cables helps to ensure that 4K UHD (3840x2160 @ 60 Hz) or 4K DCI (4096x2160 @ 60 Hz) resolutions can be reached.
4. We suggest that the CS1942DP / CS1944DP should be kept powered on.

Quad-Display (DCC Mode)

To expand your installation to a Quad-Display display, you can use DCC Mode to connect two CS1942DP / CS1944DP units together, and use four displays in unison.
To set up DCC mode, power off all devices, refer to the installation diagram on the next page (the numbers in the diagram correspond to the steps, below), and do the following:
1. Connect all the computers to the Host as described in Hardware Setup, Cable Connections, page 11.
2. On the Client, using two DisplayPort cables, plug the DisplayPort connectors into the DisplayPort sockets A and B in the same KVM port section of the switch.
3. At the other end of the two DisplayPort cables, plug the monitor cable into the respective ports on the computer.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for all computers.
5. Plug the console monitors into the DisplayPort console ports located on the Host’s and Client’s rear panel.
6. Use an RJ-45 cable to connect the DCC port of the Host to the DCC port of the Client.
7. On the rear of the Client set the DCC switch to Secondary.*
8. On the rear of the Host set the DCC switch to Primary.
9. Power up the installation: plug in the power cord for the Host and Client, then power on both. After both units are up, power on the computer/video source devices.
Note: 1. P means Primary, and S means Secondary.

Manual Switching

There are three convenient methods to switch between the computers: Manual – by pressing the port selection pushbuttons on the front panel, Mouse – by clicking the scroll wheel of the mouse, and Hotkey – by entering combinations on the keyboard.

Manual Switching

For manual port selection:
To bring complete focus (audio, KVM, and USB) to a computer, either,
a) press the port selection pushbutton that corresponds to that computer; or b) press the Mode pushbutton once (the Mode pushbutton’s three icons light up) and then press the port selection pushbutton that corresponds to that computer. All three port icons light up.
To bring only the KVM focus to a computer, press the Mode pushbutton
twice (the Mode pushbutton’s KVM icon lights up), and then press the
port selection pushbutton that corresponds to that computer. The port’s KVM icon (the port number) lights up.
To bring only the audio focus to a computer, press the Mode pushbutton
three times (the Mode pushbutton’s audio icon lights up), and then press
the port selection pushbutton that corresponds to that computer. The port’s audio icon lights up.
To bring only the USB focus to a computer, press the Mode pushbutton
four times (the Mode pushbutton’s USB icon lights up), and then press the
port selection pushbutton that corresponds to that computer. The port’s USB icon lights up.
Press and hold port selection pushbuttons 1 and 2 simultaneously for two
seconds to start Auto Scan mode.
Note: 1. Press and release either port selection pushbutton to stop Auto
Scan Mode. The KVM focus goes to the computer attached to the corresponding port of the pushbutton you pressed.
2. If a port is not selected within five seconds of pushing the Mode pushbutton, the Mode pushbutton will power off.

Mouse Switching

For mouse port selection: Double-click the scroll wheel of your USB mouse to cycle through the ports.
Note: 1. Mouse switching is only supported by USB 3-key scroll wheel
mice.
2. Mouse switching is disabled by default. See Hotkey Setting Mode, page 24, to enable mouse switching.
3. Mouse switching is only supported when Mouse Emulation is enabled.

Hotkey Switching

For Hotkey port selection: All port switches from the keyboard begin by pressing the Scroll Lock key twice. Regarding details of the Hotkey parameters, see Hotkey Operation, page 21.

Hot Plugging

The CS1942DP / CS1944DP supports USB hot plugging – components can be removed and added back into the installation by unplugging their cables from the USB hub ports without the need to shut the unit down.

Powering Off and Restarting

If it becomes necessary to Power Off the CS1942DP / CS1944DP unit, before starting it back up, you must do the following:
1. Shut down all the computers that are attached to the switch.
2. Unplug the switch’s power adapter cable.
3. Wait 10 seconds, then plug the switch’s power adapter cable back in.
4. Once the switch is powered up, power on the computers.

Port ID Numbering

Each KVM port section on the CS1942DP / CS1944DP switch is assigned a port number. (1 or 2 for the CS1942DP; 1 to 4 for the CS1944DP). The port numbers are marked on the rear panel of the switch (see page 8 for details).

The Port ID of a computer is derived from the KVM port number it is connected to. For example, a computer connected to KVM port 2 has a Port ID of 2.
The Port ID is used to specify which computer gets the KVM, USB peripheral, and audio focus with the Hotkey port selection method (see page 22 for details).

Alternative Manual Port Selection Settings

When Hotkey Setting Mode has been activated, pressing [S] will invoke the alternative front panel pushbutton manual port selection functions, as explained below:
Press a port selection pushbutton once to bring the KVM, audio and USB
focus to the computer attached to its corresponding port.
Press a port selection pushbutton twice to bring the audio focus to the
computer attached to its corresponding port.
Press and hold a port selection pushbutton for more than 2 seconds to
bring only the KVM focus to the computer attached to its corresponding port.
Press and hold port selection pushbuttons 1 and 2 for more than 2 seconds
to start Auto Scan Mode, see page 23 for details.

Hotkey Operation
The CS1942DP / CS1944DP provides an extensive, easy-to-use, Hotkey function that makes it convenient to control and configure your KVM installation from the keyboard. Hotkeys provide asynchronous (independent) switching of the KVM, USB hub and audio focus. If you wish, you can give one computer the KVM console focus, another the USB hub focus and the other two the audio focus.

Port Switching

All port switches begin with tapping the Scroll Lock key twice. The tables below describe the actions that each combination performs.
Note: If using the Scroll Lock key conflicts with other programs running on
the computer, the Ctrl key can be used, instead. See Alternate Port Switching Keys, page 25, for details.

Auto Scanning

The CS1942DP / CS1944DP’s Auto Scan feature automatically cycles the KVM focus through the computer ports at regular intervals. This allows you to monitor the computer activity without having to take the trouble of switching from port to port manually. See the table below for details.

3. Although the video focus switches from port to port, the audio and
USB focus do not switch. They stay at the port they were on when Auto Scanning started.
4. To exit Auto Scan Mode, press the Esc key, or the Spacebar.

Hotkey Setting Mode

Hotkey Setting Mode is used to set up your CS1942DP / CS1944DP switch configuration. All operations begin with invoking Hotkey Setting Mode (HSM).

Invoking HSM

To invoke HSM do the following:
1. Press and hold down [Num Lock].
2. Press and release [-].
3. Release [Num Lock].
Note: There is an alternate key combination to invoke HSM. See below for
details.
When HSM is active, the Caps Lock, and Scroll Lock LEDs flash in succession to indicate that HSM is in effect. They stop flashing and revert to normal status when you exit HSM.
Ordinary keyboard and mouse functions are suspended – only Hotkey compliant keystrokes and mouse clicks (described in the sections that follow), can be input.
At the conclusion of some Hotkey operations, you automatically exit Hotkey mode. With some operations, you must exit manually. To exit HSM manually, press the Esc key, or the Spacebar.

Alternate HSM Invocation Keys

An alternate set of HSM invocation keys is provided in case the default set conflicts with programs running on the computers.
To switch to the alternate HSM invocation set, do the following:
1. Invoke HSM (see page 24).
2. Press and release [H].
The HSM invocation keys become the Ctrl key (instead of Num Lock) and the F12 key (instead of minus).
Note: This procedure is a toggle between the two methods. To revert back
to the original HSM invocation keys, invoke HSM, then press and release the H key again.

Alternate Port Switching Keys

The port switching activation keys can be changed from tapping the Scroll Lock key twice ([Scroll Lock] [Scroll Lock]) to tapping the Ctrl key twice. To change the port switching activation keys, do the following:
1. Invoke HSM (see page 24).
2. Press and release [T].
Note: This procedure is a toggle between the two methods. To revert back
to the original [Scroll Lock] [Scroll Lock] method, invoke HSM, then press and release the T key again.

Keyboard Operating Platform

The CS1942DP / CS1944DP’s default port configuration is for a PC compatible keyboard operating platform. If your console uses a PC compatible keyboard and you have a Mac or Sun attached to a port, for example, you can change the port’s keyboard operating platform configuration so that the PC compatible keyboard emulates the Mac or Sun keyboard. The procedure is as follows:
1. Bring the KVM focus to the port you want to set.
2. Invoke HSM (see page 24).
3. Press and release the appropriate Function key (see table below). After completing this procedure, you automatically exit HSM.
Function Key Operation
[F1] Sets the SPC mode so that it can work under special
operating systems as a standard (104 key) keyboard.
[F2] Enables Mac keyboard emulation, see page 31, for details.
[F10] Enables Windows keyboard emulation.

List Switch Settings

To see a listing of the current switch settings, do the following:
1. Open a text editor or word processor and place the cursor in the page window.
2. Invoke HSM (see page 24).
3. Press and release [F4] to display the settings.

USB Reset

If the USB loses focus and needs to be reset, do the following:
1. Invoke HSM (see page 24).
2. Press and release [F5]

The front panel LEDs flash to indicate Firmware Upgrade Mode is in effect.

Restore Default Settings

To reset the CS1942DP / CS1944DP to its default Hotkey settings, do the following:
1. Invoke HSM (see page 24).
2. Press [R] [Enter].
All Hotkey settings return to the factory default settings.

The Firmware Upgrade Utility
The Windows-based Firmware Upgrade Utility (FWUpgrade.exe) provides a smooth, automated process for upgrading the CS1942DP / CS1944DP’s firmware.
The Utility comes as part of a Firmware Upgrade Package that is specific for each device. New firmware upgrade packages are posted on our website as new firmware revisions become available. Check the website regularly to find the latest packages and information relating to them:

Before You Begin

To prepare for the firmware upgrade, do the following:
1. From a computer that is not part of your KVM installation, go to the
ATEN Support & Download site and choose the model name that relates to your device (CS1942DP / CS1944DP) to get a list of available Firmware Upgrade Packages.
2. Choose the Firmware Upgrade Package you want to install (usually the
most recent), and download it to your computer.
3. Disconnect the CS1942DP / CS1944DP from your KVM installation and
power it off. Connect the USB cable’s Type A USB connector to a USB port on your computer.
4. At the other end of the USB cable, connect the USB Type B connector to
the Type B USB port in the Port 1 KVM section.
Note: The USB cable’s USB Type B connector can be connected to any KVM port section, but the Port Selection pushbutton in Step 5, below, must be Port 1.
5. Press and hold the Mode pushbutton. While holding the button, connect
the power adapter to the CS1942DP / CS1944DP to enter Firmware Upgrade Mode. The front panel LEDs flash together to indicate Firmware Upgrade Mode is in effect.

Starting the Upgrade

To upgrade your firmware:
1. Run the downloaded Firmware Upgrade Package file – either by double clicking the file icon, or by opening a command line and entering the full path to it.
The Firmware Upgrade Utility Welcome screen appears:

If you enabled Check Firmware Version, the Utility compares the device’s firmware level with that of the upgrade files. If it finds that the device’s version is higher than the upgrade version, it brings up a dialog box informing you of the situation and gives you the option to Continue or Cancel.
If you didn’t enable Check Firmware Version, the Utility installs the upgrade files without checking whether they are a higher level, or not.
As the Upgrade proceeds, status messages appear in the Status Messages panel, and the progress toward completion is shown on the Progress bar.

Upgrade Succeeded

After the upgrade has completed, a screen appears to inform you that the procedure was successful:

After a successful completion, the switches exit Firmware Upgrade Mode, and reset themselves.
If you have a DCC mode installation be sure to reconnect the cable connected to the DCC port, and set the DCC switch back to Client on the appropriate switch (see Quad-Display (DCC Mode), page 14).

Upgrade Failed

If the Upgrade Succeeded screen doesn’t appear, it means that the upgrade failed to complete successfully, in which case you should do the following:
1. Power off the CS1942DP / CS1944DP by removing the power jack.
2. Invoke Firmware Upgrade Mode by holding down the Mode Selection pushbutton on the front panel (seesee Mode Selection Pushbutton, page 6) and power on the CS1942DP / CS1944DP. The orange LEDs flash together.
3. Do the firmware upgrade procedure again.

Safety Instructions

Read all of these instructions. Save them for future reference.
This device is for indoor use only.
Follow all warnings and instructions marked on the device.
Do not place the device on any unstable surface (cart, stand, table, etc.).
If the device falls, serious damage will result.
Do not use the device near water.
Do not place the device near, or over, radiators or heat registers.
The device cabinet is provided with slots and openings to allow for
adequate ventilation. To ensure reliable operation, and to protect against overheating, these openings must never be blocked or covered.
The device should never be placed on a soft surface (bed, sofa, rug, etc.) as this will block its ventilation openings. Likewise, the device should not be placed in a built in enclosure unless adequate ventilation has been provided.
Never spill liquid of any kind on the device.
Unplug the device from the wall outlet before cleaning. Do not use liquid
or aerosol cleaners. Use a damp cloth for cleaning.
The device should be operated from the type of power source indicated on
the marking label. If you are not sure of the type of power available, consult your dealer or local power company.
Avoid circuit overloads. Before connecting equipment to a circuit, know

The device is designed for IT power distribution systems with 230V

To prevent damage to your installation, it is important that all devices are

The device is equipped with a 3-wire grounding type plug. This is a safety
feature. If you are unable to insert the plug into the outlet, contact your electrician to replace your obsolete outlet. Do not attempt to defeat the

purpose of the grounding-type plug. Always follow your local/national wiring codes.
Do not allow anything to rest on the power cord or cables. Route the
power cord and cables so that they cannot be stepped on or tripped over.
If an extension cord is used with this device make sure that the total of the
ampere ratings of all products used on this cord does not exceed the extension cord ampere rating. Make sure that the total of all products plugged into the wall outlet does not exceed 15 amperes.
To help protect your system from sudden, transient increases and
decreases in electrical power, use a surge suppressor, line conditioner, or un-interruptible power supply (UPS).
Position system cables and power cables carefully; Be sure that nothing
rests on any cables.
Never push objects of any kind into or through cabinet slots. They may
touch dangerous voltage points or short out parts resulting in a risk of fire or electrical shock.
Do not attempt to service the device yourself. Refer all servicing to
qualified service personnel.
If the following conditions occur, unplug the device from the wall outlet
and bring it to qualified service personnel for repair.

Troubleshooting

Overview

Operation problems can be due to a variety of causes. The first step in solving them is to make sure that all cables are securely attached and seated completely in their sockets.
In addition, updating the product’s firmware may solve problems that have been discovered and resolved since the prior version was released. If your product is not running the latest firmware version, we strongly recommend that you upgrade. See Chapter 6, The Firmware Upgrade Utility, for upgrade details.
Symptom Possible Cause Action
Mouse and/or Keyboard not responding.
USB devices not responding.
Device not recognized (Windows).
Front Panel Pushbuttons not responding when pushed.
Improper mouse and/or keyboard reset.
CS1942DP / CS1944DP needs to be reset.
USB ports need to reset.
PC or OS does not support USB 2.0/3.0.
Windows timing problem.
The daisy chain switch located on the back of the CS1942DP / CS1944DP is set to Client.
Unplug the cable(s) from the console port(s), then plug it/them back in.
Power off all devices on the installation (see safety note, top of page 11); power off the CS1942DP / CS1944DP; wait five seconds; then power up
Unplug the device’s USB cable from the USB port on the CS1942DP / CS1944DP’s rear panel, then plug it back in.
The CS1942DP / CS1944DP has a built-in USB 3.0 hub, so will not support PCs or OS that do not support USB 2.0/3.0.
For an OS that does not support USB 2.0, keyboard and mouse functions can be reset using the [F1] Hotkey function. See page 29.
1. Unplug the KVM cable from the com­puter’s USB port.
2. Go into Windows’ System Settings and remove the Unknown Device entry.
3. Plug the KVM cable back in. Windows will now recognize the device.
Make sure the daisy chain switch located on the rear of the switch is set to Host.
You should only set the daisy chain switch to Client when connecting two units in a Quad­Display installation, see Quad-Display (DCC Mode), page 14.

Symptom Possible Cause Action
The Front Panel Pushbutton Combo key doesn’t work after its set.
Some Hotkeys are not supported as front panel pushbutton combo keys.
The [X] [Enter], [R] [Enter]. and [upgrade] [Enter] Hotkeys can not be set as a front panel pushbutton combo key. Select a different Hotkey to use.

Limited Warranty

ATEN warrants its hardware in the country of purchase against flaws in
materials and workmanship for a Warranty Period of two [2] years (warranty
period may vary in certain regions/countries) commencing on the date of
original purchase. This warranty period includes the LCD panel of ATEN LCD
KVM switches. Select products are warranted for an additional year (see A+
Warranty for further details). Cables and accessories are not covered by the
Standard Warranty.
What is covered by the Limited Hardware Warranty
ATEN will provide a repair service, without charge, during the Warranty Period.
If a product is detective, ATEN will, at its discretion, have the option to (1) repair
said product with new or repaired components, or (2) replace the entire product
with an identical product or with a similar product which fulfills the same function
as the defective product. Replaced products assume the warranty of the original
product for the remaining period or a period of 90 days, whichever is longer.
When the products or components are replaced, the replacing articles shall
become customer property and the replaced articles shall become the property
of ATEN.
