Safety information

Your Eee Box PC is designed and tested to meet the latest standards
of safety for information technology equipment. However, to ensure
your safety, it is important that you read the following safety
instructions.

Setting up your system

• Read and follow all instructions in the documentation before you
operate your system.

• Do not use this product near water or a heated source such as a
radiator.

• Set up the system on a stable surface with the provided stand.
Never use the system alone without the stand.

• Openings on the chassis are for ventilation. Do not block or cover
these openings. Make sure you leave plenty of space around the
system for ventilation. Never insert objects of any kind into the
ventilation openings.

• Use this product in environments with ambient temperatures
between 0˚C and 40˚C.

• If you use an extension cord, make sure that the total ampere
rating of the devices plugged into the extension cord does not
exceed its ampere rating.

Care during use

• Do not walk on the power cord or allow anything to rest on it.

• Do not spill water or any other liquids on your system.

• When the system is turned off, a small amount of electrical
current still flows. Always unplug all power, modem, and network
cables from the power outlets before cleaning the system.

• If you encounter the following technical problems with the
product, unplug the power cord and contact a qualified service
technician or your retailer.

• The power cord or plug is damaged.

• The system does not function properly even if you follow
the operating instructions.

Front view

Refer to the diagram below to identify the components on this side
of the system.

Hard disk LED

The hard disk LED blinks when data is being written into or

read from the hard disk drive.

Power switch

The power switch allows powering ON and OFF the system.

Memory card slot

The built-in memory card reader reads MMC/SD/SDHC/MS/

MS Pro cards used in devices like digital cameras, MP3
players, mobile phones, and PDAs.

USB port

The USB (Universal Serial Bus) port is compatible with USB

devices such as keyboards, mouse devices, cameras, and
hard disk drives. USB allows many devices to run
simultaneously on a single computer, with some peripheral
acting as additional plug-in sites or hubs.

Headphone/Audio Out jack

The stereo headphone jack (3.5mm) is used to connect the

system’s audio out signal to amplified speakers or
headphones.

Microphone jack

The microphone jack is designed to connect the

microphone used for video conferencing, voice narrations,
or simple audio recordings.

Wireless antenna jack

The jack is used to connect the supplied wireless antenna to

enhance wireless signal reception.

Power input (DC 19V)

The supplied power adapter converts AC power to DC

power for use with this jack. Power supplied through this
jack supplies power to the PC. To prevent damage to the PC,
always use the supplied power adapter.

The power adapter may become warm to hot when in use. Do
not cover the adapter and keep it away from your body.

DVI port

The Digital Visual Interface (DVI) port supports a high

quality VGA-compatible device such as a monitor or
projector to allow viewing on a larger external display.

USB port

The USB (Universal Serial Bus) port is compatible with USB

devices such as keyboards, mouse devices, cameras, and
hard disk drives. USB allows many devices to run
simultaneously on a single computer, with some peripheral
acting as additional plug-in sites or hubs.

LAN port

The eight-pin RJ-45 LAN port supports a standard Ethernet

cable for connection to a local network.

Audio Out (S/PDIF Out) jack

Plug an 3.5mm mini-jack audio cable into this jack for

analog or digital audio transfer.

For S/PDIF Out function, use the supplied mini jack
to S/PDIF adapter to connect to your amplifier.

Positioning your Eee Box PC

Installing the stand

Erect your Eee Box PC with the supplied stand. To do so:

1. Locate the screw hole on the bottom of the Eee Box PC.

2. Align the stand screw to the PC screw hole, and then secure the
stand to the PC with a coin.

Installing your Eee Box PC to a
monitor

You can also install your Eee Box PC to the back of a monitor. To do
so:

1. Secure the metal shelf (optional accessory) to your monitor with
four screws.

To fasten the metal shelf, your monitor must comply with VESA75
or VESA100 standard.

2. Place your Eee Box PC on the metal shelf noting the correct
alignment, and then secure the PC to the shelf with a coin.

Setting up your Eee Box PC

You need to connect peripherals before using your Eee Box PC.

Connecting to a display

Connect one end of a DVI cable to the display (1) and the other end
to the DVI port on the system rear panel (2).

Connecting to USB devices

Connect USB devices like keyboards, mouse devices, and printers to
the USB ports on the system rear panel.

Connect one end of a network cable to the LAN port on the system
rear panel and the other end to a hub or switch.

Connect the supplied AC adapter to the DC IN jack on the system
rear panel, and then press the power switch on the front panel to
turn on the system.

Using your Eee Box PC

Conguring wireless connection

To connect to a wireless network, follow the instructions below:

Connect the supplied wireless antenna to your Eee Box PC to
enhance wireless signal reception.

1. From the Windows®
notification area, right-click
the wireless network icon
and select View Available
Wireless Networks.

2. Select the wireless network
you want to connect to from
the list and click Connect.

To establish a wired network, follow the instructions below:

ASUS Easy Update

ASUS Easy Update is a software tool that automatically detects and
downloads the latest BIOS, drivers, and applications for your
Eee Box PC.

Eee Box Express Gate

Eee Box Express Gate is an instant-on environment that gives you
quick access to web, Skype, and your photo albums. A few seconds
after turning on your Eee Box PC, you will be at the Express Gate
menu where you can start the web browser, Skype, or other Express
Gate applications.

The first screen

Express Gate’s first screen appears right after you turn on your Eee
Box PC.

From here, you can start the web browser or Skype, manage your
photos, choose to enter Windows® OS or BIOS setup, or turn off the
system.

If you do not make any selection, Express Gate will terminate and the
system is ready to enter Windows® OS.

The Express Gate environment

The very first time you enter the Express Gate environment (by
clicking any of the Web, Photo, Chat, or Skype icons from the first
screen), a first-time wizard will guide you through several Express
Gate configurations, including language, date and time, and screen
resolution.

LaunchBar

In the Express Gate environment, click the icons on the LaunchBar to
open or switch among applications.

You can also switch among applications by pressing ALT + TAB
on the keyboard. Right-clicking anywhere on the desktop opens a
menu of applications.

The red dot below an application icon on the LaunchBar indicates
that the application is running, so you can switch to it immediately.

Knowing the Express Gate keyboard shortcuts

The following are frequently-used Express Gate keyboard shortcuts.

In the first screen:

Using the Configuration panel

The configuration panel allows you to change Express Gate settings.

Click an icon to open a configuration tool. The following tools are
available:

Date and Time: sets date and time as well as time zone.

Input Language: configures input method settings.

Language and Keyboard: sets your language and keyboard
preferences.

LaunchBar Settings: customizes your LaunchBar.

•

Network: establishes a wireless/wired network connection.

•

Environment Settings: restores the Express Gate environment
to its factory settings.

The first-time Wizard will run again when you enter the Express
Gate environment.

• Screen Settings: sets the optimal resolution for your display.

•

Volume Control: adjusts the volume of your speaker or
microphone.

Using the LaunchBar

The LaunchBar contains application and system status icons. The
LaunchBar can be hidden or located on any side of the screen.

Starts the Web Browser for quick access to the World Wide

Web.

Starts the Photo Manager album/organizer tool.

Starts the Chat instant messaging tool.

Start the Skype application.

Opens Configuration Panel to configure network settings

and other preferences.

In rare cases when one of the above applications stops responding,
you can right-click its icon and then click Close to close it forcibly.

Opens File Manager that gives you access to the files in

USB drives. If a USB device is detected, the icon is with a
green arrow.

Shows network status; click to configure network settings.

Shows volume status; click to change volume.

Configures input method settings as well as keyboard

shortcuts.

Express Gate allows you to upload files from the hard disk drive
and USB drives and to download files to USB drives only.

Customizes LaunchBar settings.

Shows the “ASUS Utility” panel.

Shows Express Gate version information.

Opens Express Gate online Help.

Opens the “Power Off” menu. You can also press

CTRL + ALT + DEL on the keyboard to open this menu.

Recovering your system

English

Using the recovery DVD

The recovery DVD includes an image of the operating system
installed on your system at the factory. The recovery DVD, working
with the support CD, provides a comprehensive recovery
solution that quickly restores your system to its original working
state, provided that your hard disk drive is in good working order.
Before using the recovery DVD, copy your data files (such as Outlook
PST files) to a USB device or to a network drive and make note of any
customized configuration settings (such as network settings).

You must connect an external USB DVD-ROM to your computer
before inserting the recovery DVD and support CD.

1. Turn on your computer and press <F8> to enter the Please

select boot device menu.

2. Insert the recovery DVD into the optical drive and select the

optical drive (“DVDROM: XXX”) as the boot device. Press
<Enter> and then press any key to continue.

Using the hidden partition

The recovery partition includes an image of the operating system,
drivers, and utilities installed on your system at the factory. The
recovery partition provides a comprehensive recovery solution that
quickly restores your system’s software to its original working state,
provided that your hard disk drive is in good working order. Before
using the recovery partition, copy your data files (such as Outlook
PST files) to floppy disks or to a network drive and make note of any
customized configuration settings (such as network settings).

DO NOT delete the partition named “RECOVERY.” The recovery
partition is created at the factory and cannot be restored by the
user if deleted. Take your system to an authorized ASUS service
center if you have problems with the recovery process.

Einstellen des Systems

1. Suchen Sie die Schraubenlöcher auf der Unterseite des Eee Box-PCs.

2. Richten Sie die Ständerschrauben auf die Löcher aus, und
befestigen Sie dann den Ständer mit Hilfe einer Münze am PC.

vier Schrauben am Bildschirm.

Um die Metallhalterung befestigen zu können, muss der
Bildschirm dem Standard VESA75 oder VESA100 entsprechen.

und Ihre Bilderordner. Sekunden nach dem Start Ihres Eee Box-PCs
können Sie über das Express Gate-Menü im Internet surfen, Skype
benutzen oder andere Express Gate-Anwendungen ausführen.

Die Express Gate Startanzeige erscheint, sobald Sie den Eee Box-PC
einschalten.

Von hier aus können Sie Ihren Web-Browser oder Skype öffnen, Ihre
Bilder verwalten, das Windows®-Betriebssystem oder das BIOS-Setup
öffnen, oder das System ausschalten.

Verwenden der Wiederherstellungs-DVD

Die Wiederherstellungs-DVD beinhaltet ein Image (Abbild) des
Betriebssystems, wie es vom hersteller auf Ihrem Eee PC installiert
wurde. Die Wiederherstellungs-DVD bietet eine umfangreiche
Wiederherstellungslösung, die Ihr System schnell in den
Originalzustand zurück versetzt, vorausgesetzt, Ihre Festplatte arbeitet
ordnungsgemäß. Bevor Sie die Wiederherstellungs-DVD verwenden,
kopieren Sie alle persönlichen Daten (z.B. Outlook PST-Dateien) auf
einen externen Datenträger und notieren Sie sich alle vorgenommenen

Benutzen der versteckten Partition

Die Wiederherstellungs-Partition enthält ein Image (Abbild) des
Betriebssystems, der Treiber und der vom Hersteller in Ihren System
installierten Programme. Die Wiederherstellungs-Partition bietet
somit eine umfangreiche Wiederherstellungslösung, die Ihre
Systemsoftware schnell in den originalen Arbeitszustand zurück
versetzt und Ihre Festplatte in ordnungsgemäßem Betriebszustand
hält. Bevor Sie die Wiederherstellungspartiton benutzen, kopieren
Sie Ihre persönlichen Dateien (z.B. Outlook PST-Dateien) auf
Disketten, Netzwerklaufwerke, CDs oder DVDs und notieren Sie sich

Löschen Sie NICHT die Partition mit dem Namen “RECOVERY”. Die
Wiederherstellungspartition wurde werkseitig erstellt und kann,

Bringen Sie Ihr System zu einem ASUS Kundendienst, wenn Sie mit
der Wiederherstellung Probleme haben.

Installazione del Sistema

• Prima di utilizzare il sistema, leggere e seguire tutte le istruzioni
contenute nella documentazione.

• Non utilizzare questo prodotto in prossimità di acqua o di sorgenti

• Installare il sistema su una superficie stabile, utiizzando il piedistallo
in dotazione. Mai utilizzare il sistema senza il piedistallo

Jack Antenna Wireless

Questo jack è utilizzato per collegare l’ antenna wireless in

dotazione, in modo da migliorare la ricezione del segnale
wireless.

Ingresso Alimentazione (DC 19V)

L’adattatore in dotazione converte la corrente elettrica

alternata di rete in corrente continua da utilizzare con questo
jack. L’energia elettrica fornita attraverso questo spinotto
alimenta il PC. Per evitare danni al PC, utilizzare sempre
l’adattatore in dotazione.

Quando in uso, l’ adattatore può diventare piuttosto caldo. Non
coprire l’ adattatore e tenerlo lontano dal corpo.

compatibile DVI di alta qualità, come un monitor o un
proiettore, per consentire la visualizzazione su uno schermo

Porre Eee Box PC in posizione verticale sul piedistallo in dotazione.
A questo fine:

1. Individuare il foro per la vite sul lato inferiore di Eee Box PC.

2. Allineare la vite del piedistallo con il foro per la vite del PC, quindi
fissare il piedistallo al PC con una moneta.

E’ inoltre possibile installare Eee Box PC sul retro di un monitor.

A questo fine:

1. Fissare il ripiano metallico (accessorio opzionale) al monitor con
quattro viti.

Per l’ installazione del ripiano metallico, il monitor deve essere
conforme allo standard VESA75 o VESA100.

correttamente allineato, quindi fissare il PC sul ripiano, servendosi

ASUS Easy Update è un software che rileva e scarica automaticamente
i più recenti BIOS, driver ed applicazioni per Eee Box PC.

1. Dalla barra delle applicazioni di
Windows®, cliccare con il tasto
di destra sull’ icona ASUS Easy
Update.

(Pianifica) per impostare

Eee Box Express Gate

Express Gate è un programma ad accensione istantanea, che
consente di accedere rapidamente a internet, Skype e agli album
fotografici. Pochi secondi dopo aver acceso Eee Box PC, si apre il menu
Express Gate, da cui è possibile avviare il browser web, Skype o altre
applicazioni Express Gate.

La Schermata Iniziale

La schermata iniziale di Express Gate appare subito dopo l’ accensione
di Eee Box PC.

Da qui, si può lanciare il browser web o Skype, catalogare foto, scegliere
di accedere al sistema operativo Windows® o alla configurazione del
BIOS, oppure di disattivare il sistema.

In assenza di selezioni, Express Gate sarà terminato e il sistema pronto
per accedere a Windows®.

Caratteristiche di Express Gate

La prima volta in cui si accede a Express Gate (cliccando su una delle
icone sulla prima schermata: Web, Photo, Chat o Skype), un wizard
guida attraverso le varie configurazioni di Express Gate, fra cui lingua,
data e ora, e risoluzione schermo.

LaunchBar

Una volta in Express Gate, cliccare sulle icone sulla LaunchBar per
avviare le applicazioni o spostarsi fra di esse.

E’ inoltre possibile spostarsi fra le applicazioni anche premendo ALT +
TAB sulla tastiera. Un clic con il tasto di destra su un punto qualunque
del desktop permette di aprire un menu di applicazioni.

Il punto rosso, sotto l’ icona di un’ applicazione sulla LaunchBar, indica
che l’ applicazione è in esecuzione ed è immediatamente accessibile.

Pannello di Configurazione

Il pannello di configurazione consente di modificare le impostazioni
Express Gate.

Cliccare su un’ icona per aprire uno strumento di configurazione. Gli
strumenti disponibili sono i seguenti:

• Date and Time (Data e Ora): impostazioni data, ora e fuso orario.

Input Language (Metodo di Inserimento): configurazione delle

•
impostazioni relative al metodo di input.

•

Language and Keyboard (Lingua e Tastiera): impostazioni
lingua e preferenze tastiera.

•

LaunchBar Settings (Impostazioni LaunchBar):
personalizzazione della LaunchBar.

•

Network (Rete): connessione di rete wireless/via cavo:

•

Environment Settings (Impostazioni Ambiente): ripristino
delle impostazioni predefinite Express Gate.

Italiano

La prima volta in cui si entra in ambiente Express Gate, sarà di
nuovo avviato il programma di configurazione guidata.

• Screen Settings (Impostazioni Schermo): impostazione della
risoluzione ottimale dello schermo.

Volume Control (Controllo Volume): regolazione del volume
dell’ altoparlante o del microfono.

LaunchBar

La LaunchBar contiene le icone di stato del sistema e delle applicazioni.
La LaunchBar può essere nascosta o posizionata in uno dei lati dello
schermo.

Avvia Web Browser per un rapido accesso a Internet.

Avvia lostrumento di classificazione foto/album Photo

Manager.

Avvia lo strumento di messaggistica istantanea Chat .

Avvia l’ applicazione Skype.

Apre Configuration Panel ( Pannello di configurazione) per

configurare le impostazioni di rete e altre preferenze.

In rari casi, quando una delle suddette applicazioni non risponde, è
possibile cliccare con il tasto di destra sull’ icona corrispondente e
poi premere Close (Chiudi) per la chiusura forzata.

Apre File Manager, che consente di accedere ai file nei

drive USB. Alla rilevazione di un dispositivo USB, sull’ icona
compare una freccia verde.

Mostra lo stato della rete; cliccarvi per configurare le

impostazioni di rete.

Mostra lo stato del volume; cliccarvi per modificare il

volume.

Configura le impostazioni del metodo di input e i

collegamenti rapidi della tastiera.

Express Gate offre soltanto la possibilità di caricare file dal disco
rigido e da drive USB e di scaricare file su drive USB.

Personalizza le impostazioni LaunchBar.

Mostra il pannello “ASUS Utility”.

Mostra le informazioni sulla versione Express Gate.

Apre la Guida online Express Gate.

Apre il menu “Power Off”(Fine della sessione di lavoro). E’

anche possibile premere

CTRL + ALT + DEL sulla tastiera

per aprire questo menu.

Ripristino del Sistema

Tramite DVD di Ripristino

Il DVD di Ripristino contiene un' immagine del sistema operativo
installato dal fabbricante. Il DVD di Ripristino, insieme al DVD di
Supporto, offre una soluzione completa per il ripristino del sistema,
che è così riportato rapidamente allo stato operativo originario,
purchè il disco rigido sia in buone condizioni. Prima di utilizzare il DVD
di Ripristino, copiare i file dati (p.e. file PST Outlook) su un dispositivo
USB o su un disco di rete e annotare le impostazioni di configurazione
personalizzate (p.e. impostazioni di rete).

Prima di inserire il DVD di Ripristino e il CD di Supporto, collegare al
computer un DVD-ROM USB.

1. Accendere il computer e premere <F8> per accedere al menu
Please select boot device.

2. Inserire il DVD di Ripristino
unità (“DVDROM: XXX”) come dispositivo di avvio. Premere
<Enter> (Accedi), quindi cliccare su un tasto qualsiasi per
continuare.

3. Appare la finestra
installare un nuovo sistema (necessari min. 20GB di spazio). Le
opzioni sono:

Recover Windows to a partition
Questa opzione eliminerà soltanto una delle partizioni da

selezionare di seguito, mantenendo le altre e creerà una nuova
partizione del sistema come disco “C.” Selezionare una partizione
e cliccare NEXT (AVANTI).

Recover Windows to entire HD
Questa opzione eliminerà tutte le partizioni dall’ unità disco

rigido e creerà una nuova partizione del sistema, come disco “C”.
Selezionare e cliccare Yes (Sì).

4.

Seguire le istruzioni sullo schermo per completare il processo di
ripristino.

In fase di ripristino del sistema, saranno persi tutti i dati. Prima dell'
operazione, assicurarsi di eseguire una copia di riserva dei dati
importanti.

5. A richiesta, inserire il CD di supporto nell’ unità ottica. Al termine
del ripristino del sistema, riavviare il computer.

6. Dopo aver riavviato il sistema, Windows® inizia le configurazioni
del sistema e l’ installazione dei driver e delle utilità.

7. Riavviare il computer e selezionare lingua, fuso orario, tastiera,
nome del computer e nome utente per accedere al sistema
operativo Windows®.

Questo DVD di Ripristino è esclusivamente per Eee Box PC. NON
utilizzarlo su altri computer. Visitare il sito web ASUS www.asus.com
per gli aggiornamenti.

Tramite Partizione di Ripristino

La partizione di ripristino comprende un’ immagine del sistema
operativo, i driver e le utilità installate nel sistema dal fabbricante.
La partizione di ripristino
rapidamente il software del sistema allo stato operativo originario,
purchè il disco rigido sia in buone condizioni. Prima di servirsi della
partizione di ripristino, copiare i file dati (p.e. file PST Outlook) su floppy
disk o su un disco di rete e registrare le impostazioni di configurazione
personalizzate (p.e.impostazioni di rete).

NON eliminare la partizione denominata “RECOVERY”. La Partizione
Recovery è stata creata dal fabbricante e, se eliminata, non può
essere più ripristinata dall’ utente. In caso di problemi, durante il
processo di ripristino, portare il sistema presso un centro assistenza
autorizzato ASUS.

1. Premere <F9> in fase di caricamento iniziale (richiede una

Partizione di Recupero).

2. Premere

<Enter> per selezionare Windows Setup [EMS

Enabled].

3. Appare la finestra

Windows to a partition.

4. Selezionare una partizione con min. 20GB di spazio e cliccare

Next (Avanti).

5. Seguire le istruzioni sullo schermo per completare il processo di
ripristino.

Al termine del ripristino del sistema, riavviare il computer.

7. Selezionare lingua, fuso orario, tastiera, nome del computer e
nome utente per accedere al sistema operativo Windows®.
