2. INTRODUCTION
This User Guide has been created to pr ovide an easy to understand descri pt ion on how to flash upgrade the SW on projectors t hat are pr epar ed f or this in the field.
It desc r ibes the methodology and the correct software and hardware to use to perform flashing without any hassle.
This User Guide does only apply to the followi ng ASK products or their equivale nts: Product :

3. NEEDED MATERIAL
When flashing the SW a mouse Cable (301.102) and adapter ( 301. 113B) is needed. T his is optional accessories, and may be purchased separ at ely:

4. CONNECTING THE CABLES
The Flash upgrade is done via the serial mouse port on the project or . This is the communication interf ace from the computer to the projector . All PC/notebooks are equipped with serial interface c onnectors, and may thus be used for this purpose.
1. Connect the computer to the projector using the regular VGA cable. I M PO RTANT: Do not connect the mouse &adapt e r cable a t this point, as it will b e s e e n from the computer as a mouse connection. Connect the power c or d.
2. Switch on the projector.
3. Switch on the computer. The projector should now show the image of your computer screen.
4. Connect the mouse cable and adapter bet w een computer and the projector . Do not switch off the projector or the computer at this stage. The cable/adapter connects t o the RS-232 serial port on the computer, and the dedicated mo use port on the projector.
Make sure that your com puter does not rec ogni se the established connection as a mouse devi ce. Moving the trackbal l on the remote can check this; the mouse pointer shoul d not move. Also execute factory r es et on the projector to go to default com m uni c ation settings.
5. CONFIGURING THE HYPERTERMI NAL SOFTWARE
On the PC side, sof tw ar e that can perform a “t er minal emulation” is needed. This is a standard component in most operating systems, and it is also available as stand alone software. Norton PCAnywhere a nd Norto n Commander are t w o pr ogr ams that can do this. As it is a standard component in the Windows Oper at ing System. However w e r ecommend that Hypertermi nal is used. This can normally be found in the accessories me nu. This example uses this softw ar e to explain.
1. Start Hyperterminal.
2. Enter a name for the connection you are about to make. Any name can be used, we rec o mmend using a name th a t is easy to remember , as you w ill b e ab le to save a nd recall this file later. Choose an icon for the file.
3. Under “Connect using” s elect the COM port t hat you have co nnected the cables t o. Please note that this differs f r om computer to comp uter, but as t he cables need to be connected directly to t he port, a s elect ion that lists “direct t o COM x”, where x is the selected port, is correct. Normally this is COM 1 or COM 2. See below figure for reference.

4. The settings to use depend on the curre nt communication sett i ngs o n the projector in question.
Check the ADVANCED /SERVICE / INFO di alog box in the projector menu to see the current comm uni cati on settings to use. Change the settings in Hypertermi nal s o that it matches the communication settings in the projector.
In the projector menu check the FEATURE / RS-232 and ver if y that CONTROL is acti vated with a green tic k. This is necessary to establish communi c ation wi th the projector.
5. Confirm with “OK” and connect by clicki ng on the “phone icon” in Hyperterminal.
6. On the em pty Hyperte r minal scre en, pres s ENTER. Th e p r o mpt “ASK>” s ho uld appear. If not , g o over t he settings aga in, and rest art the proces s s o that the ASK prompt appears.
PLEASE NOTE:
The Impressi on A8+/9+/10+ needs more memory compar ed to the rest of the ASK A-series projectors therefor e the nu m b er of EPROM’s h av e be en increas ed to two.
It’s now one EPROM which is call ed SW and one EPROM called HW. It is very impor tant that the correct fil e is flas hed to the correct EPROM. If you flash the HW bin fil e into the wrong EPROM the projector won’t start and the EPROM has to be physical l y remov ed and replaced wi th a new.

7. FINISHING THE FILE TRANSFER
When the END prompt is visual in Hyperter minal t he flas hi ng is finished (approx. 2min.).
1. Leave the projector r unning for approximately 30 seconds to prevent that the
rep r o g ramming isn’t halted. T he lamp of the projec tor will conti nue t o work and t he fans will c ontin ue r unning as in O N mode. At this time, the projector is reprogr amming t he EPROM.
8. VERIFYI NG THE DOWNLOAD
After the download has been finished verification needs to be made that it has ended successfully a nd to st op the projector f r om running the power cord must be pulled out.
1. Reinstall the power cor d and star t the unit using normal proced ures.
2. Disconnect all sources and verify whether the new SW was successfully inst al led or not
by checking the ADVA NCED /SERVICE / INFO dialog-box in the projector me nu. If the new SW/HW number doesn’t appear as inte nded, please check t he followi ng :
Does the flas hed file have the correct .BIN format?
Was the correct protoc ol used during the download?
Was the correct c ommunication settings bei ng used?
3. It is possible to reinsert the initial SW/HW by flashi ng with the original firmware revision
for the projector. This is available t hro ugh our web page under “MLS resources | Firmware..” .
4. If the unit does not start , the download has failed and the EPROM(s) must be replaced
physically.
