Power requirements

Power requirements for electrical equipment differ from area to area. Please ensure that your machine meets the power requirements in your area.

If in doubt, consult a qualified electrician.

220V, 50Hz for Europe except UK 240V, 50Hz for UK and Australia 110V-120V/220V-240V, 50/60Hz convertible for other countries

Voltage conversion (Not on all models)

Models for Europe, UK and Australia are not equipped with this facility. Each unit is preset at the factory according to its destination, but some units can be adjusted to 110V-120V or 220V-240V as required.

If your unit's voltage can be converted

Before connecting the power cord, move the VOLTAGE SELECTOR located on the rear panel with a screwdriver until the correct voltage is indicated.

This equipment conforms to No. 82/499/EEC standard.

CLASS 1 LASER PRODUCT

This product contains a low power laser device. To ensure continued safety, do not remove any covers or attempt to gain access to the inside of the product.

Refer any servicing to qualified personnel.

About the POWER switch

This CD (Compact Disc) player is not equipped with a primary power switch. Even when the CD player's POWER button is set to STANDBY = , the power supply to this CD player is not completely turned off. If you wish to completely turn the power off, disconnect the power cord from the household AC outlet.

Page 3

What you should know to protect yourself

  • Never touch the plug with wet hands.
  • Always pull out by the plug and never the cord.
  • Only let a qualified professional repair or reassemble the CD (Compact Disc) player. An inexperienced person might touch the internal parts and receive a serious electric shock.
  • Never put anything, especially metal, into the CD player.
Protect the CD player too

  • Use only a household AC power source. Never use a DC power source.
  • If water is spilled on the CD player, disconnect it and call your dealer.
  • Make sure that the CD player is well ventilated and away from direct sunlight.
  • To avoid damage to the internal circuits and the external surface, keep it away from heat (stoves, etc.).
  • Avoid using spray type insecticide near the CD player. It can damage the finish and might ignite suddenly.
  • To avoid damaging the finish, never use paint thinner or other similar chemicals to clean the CD player.
  • Place the CD player on a flat and solid surface
  • If you don't plan to use the CD player for a long period of time, disconnect the power cord.

Condensation

Condensation inside the CD player is an important point to be considered. If the ambient temperature of the CD player's environment increases sharply within a short time, such as when a cold room is heated up, or when the player is transported from a cold location to a warm one, tiny droplets of water will condense on the laser pick-up's lens section, preventing correct playback. If excess condensation forms on the compact disc or inside the CD player, operation of the CD player will not resume until the condensation has had ample time to dissipate. Wait 30 minutes to one hour for the CD player to operate normally.

Interference

If there is interference during FM, AM broadcasts or TV reception, turn OFF the POWER button of the CD player if you are not using it.

DIGITAL OPTICAL OUTPUT terminal and cap

Only remove the terminal cap when making connections to this terminal. Keep the inside of the OPTICAL terminal clean.

  • Turn off all the components before making connections.
  • Make sure that you connect the white PIN-plugs to the left (L-white) jacks and the red PIN-plugs to the right (R-red) jacks.
  • Connect everything securely. Loose connections can lead to malfunction.
  • To prevent damage to cords, connect and disconnect by holding the plug, not the cord.
  • Do not remove the terminal cap of the OPTICAL terminal when making the following connection.

Connections and placement

Connections

Connect the white and red PIN-jacks of the CD player to the L(left) and R(right) CD jacks of your stereo amplifier with the provided connection cord.

2 After all connections have been made

Connect the CD player's power cord to the AC OUTLET of the stereo amplifier, optional audio timer or directly to your household AC outlet.

Note

  • If you wish to use the output level adjustment function of the CD player, use the VARIABLE jacks for connection (Connection-A).
  • If your amplifier does not have CD jacks, use the AUX jacks for CD player connection. Do not connect the CD player to the PHONO jacks of your amplifier.
  • Using both the VARIABLE and FIXED jacks for connection is not recommended as this will result in poor sound reproduction. Use 1 set of jacks at a time for connection.
Important!

The illustrated power plugs and cords are intended for general reference. The power plug and cord used in your country may differ from the illustrations. (Example; U.K., Australia, U.S.A., Europe, etc.)

  • Avoid interrupting the disc drawer when it is opening or closing, as this may damage it.
  • Gently pressing the center of the disc drawer will also close the disc drawer automatically.
  • Be sure to close the disc drawer when the CD player is not being used.

Playback volume

Thanks to the digital principle, compact discs have very low playback noise levels, thus signal peaks in the music are fully reproduced. As there is no inherent "background noise" as with coventional records or tapes, attempting to adjust the volume using this as a guide can result in a sudden high volume

output which may damage the speaker system or headphones. To avoid this, do not turn up the volume control excessively before playback has begun.

A word about compact discs

Dust, dirt, scratches, or warps on the compact disc may lead to noise. In order to take full advantage of the CD player's performance capabilities, follow the precautions outlined on this page. If a compact disc is not to be played for a long time, remove it from the player and store it in its plastic case.

Removal from the disc case

While depressing the center section with your thumb, lift the disc up by the edge.

Disc handling

Hold the compact disc by the outer edge only, supporting it at the center hole area with your index finger if necessary. Avoid touching the unprinted side of the disc. Do not glue any labels or stickers etc., on the disc.

Disc storage

Do not store the compact disc in a location which is subject to direct sunlight, high humidity, or hot air from heating appliances. Always replace the compact discs in their plastic cases for storage. Be careful of storing your compact discs in the interior of a car which may become very hot under certain conditions.

Disc care

Before inserting the disc for playback, remove dust, dirt or fingerprints on the recorded side by wiping it with a commercially available silicone cloth (such as that used for cleaning camera lenses or glasses).

Wipe the disc gently, being careful not to scratch its surface. When wiping the disc, refer to the illustrations. Unlike conventional records, CDs should always be wiped in a straight line from the center to the edge.

Do not use volatile chemical substances such as denaturated alcohol, record cleaners intended for conventional analog records, or antistatic fluids, as these may damage compact discs.

This CD player is equipped with a D/A (Digital to Analog) converter* (used for converting the digital PCM signal to conventional left and right channel audio signals). An OPTICAL terminal and COAXIAL jack for digital signal output are also included for digital audio signal output. These connections can be used if you wish to add a higher grade D/A converter or a digital integrated amplifier which is equipped with a D/A converter.

Connecting a digital integrated amplifier

Connecting a D/A converter and conventional amplifier

Before connecting

• Turn off all the components.

Connect the CD player and digital integrated amplifier as follows:

Connection A

Connect the OPTICAL terminal of the CD player and the DIGI-TAL (OPTICAL) IN terminal of your digital amplifier with the provided optical fiber cable.

Connection B

Connect the COAXIAL jack of the CD player and the DIGITAL (COAXIAL) IN jack of your digital amplifier with a digital connection cord (available in Hi-Fi stores).

Connect the CD player and D/A converter as follows:

Connection A

Connect the OPTICAL terminal of the CD player and the Digital Optical Input terminal of the D/A converter with an optical fiber cable (available in Hi-Fi stores).

Connection B

Connect the COAXIAL jack of the CD player and the Digital in (Coaxial) jack of the D/A converter with a digital connection cord (available in Hi-Fi stores).

Note

  • As regular connection cords are not designed to handle the high frequencies that are part of the PCM signals, they are not recommended for digital connections.
  • Video connection cords or cords designed for digital connection are recommended.
  • Because the digital PCM signal is a composite signal made up of left and right channel signals, a single connection cable is used for connections.
  • The Digital to Analog Converter (i.e. D/A converter or DAC) unit converts digital PCM signals such as the playback signals of a compact disc to conventional left and right audio stereo signals.
  • Disconnect the analog audio connection cord from the VARIABLE or FIX LINE OUT jacks for good sound reproduction when using the digital connections.
