Welcometothegroupoflibrariesusing3MDetectionSystemstoprotectcollectionsandimprovelibraryservice.The purposeofthismanualistohelplibrarydirectorsandsupervisorystaffunderstandthedetectionsystemandprovideideason communicatingsystemoperationandfunctiontostaffandlibraryusers.
Byincorporatingthismanual’srecommendationswithyourownpoliciesandprocedures,youcanachieveahighlevelof collectionsecurity.Supervisorsshouldacquaintthemselveswiththecontentsofthismanualanduseittoteachlibrarystaff. Keepitreadilyaccessible.Donotfileitaway.Itisintendedtobeareadyreferencesource.
Your3Mservicerepresentativewillconductin-servicetrainingthatwillincludeanexplanationofthecontentsofthismanual. Akeyelementofanymedialosspreventioneffortisasuccessfulstafftrainingprogram.Y oursystemwillbemuchmore effectivewiththeactivecooperationandparticipationofyourentirelibrarystaff.Werecommendthatyouperiodically conductformaltrainingsessions,includingthefollowingelementstoensureitssuccess:
•Reviewingtheowner’smanual
•Practicetaggingmaterialswithsecuritystrips.
•Reviewingyourlibrary’ssecuritypolicies
•Reviewinghowtorespondwhenthealarmsounds
•Usingthesystemalarmlog
•Addressingpatronconcerns

Thismanualcontainstheinformationnecessarytooperateyour3MDetectionSystem,aswellassupplementalinformation onhandlingalarms,orderingsupplies,andtrainingyourstaff.Italsocontainsimportantinformationaboutsecuritystrips andcirculationaccessories.
Librarypersonnelshouldbefamiliarwiththemanualandwheretolocateitsotheycanrefertoitwhennecessary.

Hands-onpractice

Afterreviewingthismanual,yourstaffwillbenefitfromactualhands-onexperiencewiththedetectionsystemproductsthey areexpectedtouse.Wesuggestyoustartbydemonstratingthepropertechniquesforapplyingsecuritystripstoitems. Youmaywishtoconducttheactualpracticeasfollows:
1.Makesurethatalltheothersecuritysystemaccessoriesareinstalledandfunctional.
2.Leteachstaffmemberpracticeinstallingstripsandmarkersonlibraryitems.
3.Leteachstaffmemberpracticesensitizinganddesensitizingmaterials.

Reviewofyourlibrary’ssecuritypolicies
Beforepracticinghowtorespondtoalarms,staffshouldbefamiliarwiththelibrary’ssecuritypoliciesastheyrelatetotheftof materials.Tohelpstaffstayinformedofsecuritymeasures,yourpolicyshouldbeinwritingandkeptwithyourtrainingkit alongwithanyotherproceduresyoufollow.
Itisparticularlyimportantforstaffmemberstoknowwhatproceduresthelibraryfollowswhentheftissuspectedorwhenit isnecessarytocontactalocallawenforcementagency.
Acriticalphaseofstafftrainingconcernstheproperstepstotakewhenthesecuritysystemalarmsounds.Thevalueoftact andcourtesywhenhandlingthisdelicatesituationcannotbeoveremphasized.Yourstaffmembersshouldreceiveasmuch preparationaspossibletomakethemfeelcomfortable.Withthepropertraining,yourstaffwillbemorelikelytoeffectively dealwithpatronswhoactivatethealarm.
