OMNII™ EXPANSION BACK COVER KIT INSTALLA-

TION SHEET

Warning: The installation of any components must be performed using the appropriate anti-static devices.

If unavailable, discharge static from your body by touching a grounded metallic object before opening
any covers on the hand-held.

1. Introduction

This document describes the procedure for installing the expansion back cover kits for the Omnii hand-held com­puter. Depending on the specific kit model, the expansion back cover may include speaker and camera modules
which require connection to the main logic board of the unit.

These instructions apply to the following upgrade kits for the Omnii hand-held computer: ST9002, ST9003,
ST9004, ST9012, and ST9013.

The kit includes the following:

• Expansion back cover (with speaker and camera modules mounted, as required by kit)

•Torx T10 screws (x8)

• Torx T6 screws (x6)

• Pistol grip switch cover

The following tools are required for this procedure:

•Torx T10 screwdriver

•Torx T6 screwdriver

2. Module Installation

Warning: Always disconnect Omnii from all power sources (battery & A/C power) before servicing components.

Back up any data in RAM first, since it will be lost when power is removed from the unit for longer than
five minutes.

1. Follow these steps to remove the existing back cover.

a. If the existing back cover has a pod attached, use a T10 Torx screwdriver to remove the four

screws securing it to the main housing, and disconnect the pod flex cable.

b. Use a T6 Torx screwdriver to remove the two topmost screws on the front of the unit, above

the display.

c. Use a T10 Torx screwdriver to remove the eight screws holding the back cover to the main unit.

d. Gently pull the back cover away from the main housing, being careful to not put stress on any

cables connecting the two parts.

e. Disconnect any cables between the back cover and the main unit.

2. It is recommended to install an end-cap on the expansion back cover before continuing with the installa­tion, as there may be cables that must be connected to the main unit. End-cap kits are sold separately.

3. If a pod module will be installed in the unit, ensure that the pod flex cable is present in socket J13 before
continuing with the back cover installation.
If no scanner has previously been installed, there may be a small piece of “dummy” stiffener present in
the connector which must be removed before inserting the cable.
The pod flex cable should be installed with the exposed contacts facing towards the top of the unit.

4. If a camera module is present (Kit #ST9012), connect the camera flex cable to socket J9 on the main
logic board.
If no camera has previously been installed, there may be a small piece of “dummy” stiffener present in the
connector. Open the connector latch and remove the stiffener before inserting the camera flex cable.
The camera flex cable should be installed with the exposed contacts facing towards the top of the unit.

5. Connect the pistol grip trigger wire harness to the white socket on the left side of the main logic board.

6. Fit the back cover in place against the main housing, ensuring that no cables are caught in the seal. If the pod
flex cable is installed, ensure that the free end can be accessed through the pod opening in the back cover.

7. Install the eight T10 Torx screws in the back cover and torque to 5 in-lb (0.56 N-m). Install the screws in the
sequence shown in Figure 1 to ensure a consistent seal all around the opening.

8. Install the two T6 Torx screws above the display. Torque the screws to 2.5 in-lb (0.28 N-m).

9. If a pod module is required, use a T10 Torx screwdriver to remove the four screws securing the blanking plate
to the back cover, and connect the pod flex cable to the pod module. Attach the pod module to the back cover
using the same four T10 Torx screws. Torque the screws to 5 in-lb (0.56 N-m).

10. If no pistol grip will be installed, the hole in the back cover for the pistol grip switch must be covered using the
supplied cover.

a. Clean the indicated area using isopropyl alcohol.
b. Peel the covering from the adhesive gasket on the pistol switch cover.
c. Press the pistol switch cover in place, and hold it firmly in place for 30 seconds.

11. Replace the main battery.
