USE
Starting-up and temperature regulation
Insert the plug into the wall socket. Open the refrigerator door and turn the thermostat knob, to be found on the top right hand side of the inner liner, clockwise beyond the «O» position, to start the appliance.
Temperature adjustment is obtained by turning the thermostat knob to the required setting. A medium setting is generally the most suitable. However, the thermostat knob setting should be adjusted depending on the temperature required inside the appliance. This, in turn, depends on a number of factors such as the ambient temperature, the number of times the door is opened, the quantity of food stored and the location of the appliance.
Turn the knob clockwise, to higher numbers, to obtain a lower temperature, or anticlockwise if a higher temperature is required.
Freezing fresh food
The 4-star compartment ( ) is suitable for long term storage of commercially frozen food and for freezing fresh food. Freezing capacity is 3 kg/24 hours. Under normal circumstances, to freeze fresh foods it is not necessary to change the setting of the thermostat knob with respect to the normal running position. However, for a faster freezing operation, turn the thermostat knob to the coldest setting; but remember that, in this condition, the refrigerator compartment temperature might drop below 0°C. If this occurs reset the thermostat knob to a warmer setting.
To help you make the most of the freezing process, here are some important hints:
Only freeze top quality, fresh and thoroughly cleaned, foodstuffs.
Prepare the fresh food in small portions to enable it to be rapidly and completely frozen and to make it possible subsequently to thaw only the quantity required at the time.
Wrap up the food in aluminium foil or polythene and make sure that the packages are airtight.
Never load a larger quantity of foods than that recommended.
During freezing, never add other food to be frozen and do not open the door too often.
Freezing is completed after 24 hours from the start. On the inner door of the compartment you
will find a list of foods followed by a number. These numbers indicate the maximum period of time for which the food in question may be stored (in months).
Important
Do not put carbonated liquids (fizzy drinks, etc.) in the freezer compartment as they may burst. Remember that, once thawed, frozen food deteriorates rapidly.
Storage of frozen food
Hints for the storage of commercially frozen food: Do not open the door frequently or leave it open
longer than is absolutely necessary. If there is a power failure when food is in the
freezer, do not open the door of the freezer compartment.
Frozen food will not be affected if the power cut is of short duration, otherwise it is recommended that the food be used within a very short time.
The interval between the time you buy frozen foods and when you put them in the freezer should be as short as possible.
The expiry dates on the packages should never be exceeded.
Thawing
Deep-frozen or frozen food, prior to being used, can be thawed in the refrigerator compartment or at room temperature, depending on the time available for this operation.
Small pieces may even be cooked still frozen, directly from the freezer: in this case, cooking will take longer.
The food to be frozen must be placed on the freezer compartment shelf; in this way, the higher temperature of the food to be frozen cannot increase the temperature of frozen foods.
15
Food refrigeration
To achieve the best results with the refrigerator compartment, you should follow one or two very simple rules:
Do not put warm foods or evaporating liquids in the refrigerator. Cover or wrap foods (particularly if they have a strong smell). Do not cover the shelves (grids) with paper or plastic since this blocks circulation of air in the compartment.
For a correct use of the compartment we suggest: Raw meat:
wrap in polythene bags and place on top of the salad crisper and, for safety, only store in this way for one or two days at the most.
Fruit & vegetables:
these should be thoroughly
cleaned and placed in the bottom salad crisper.
Butter & cheese:
these should be placed in special airtight containers or wrapped in aluminium foil or polythene bags to exclude as much air as possible.
Milk bottles:
these should have a cap; store them in
the bottle rack on the door.
Movable shelves
Fig. 6
The walls of the refrigerator are equipped with a series of runners so that the shelves can be positioned as desired.
Positioning the door shelves
To permit storage of food packages of various sizes, the door shelves can be adjusted in height. To make these adjustments proceed as follows: Gradually pull the shelf in the direction of the arrows until it comes free, then reposition as required (Fig. 7).
Fig. 7
D040
D007
D009
D037
For more thorough cleaning, the top door shelf can be removed by pulling it in the direction of the arrows, then refitting it in position (Fig. 8).
Fig. 8
Defrosting
Frost is automatically eliminated from the evaporator of the refrigerator compartment every time the motor compressor stops, during normal use. The defrost water drains out through a trough (Fig. 9) into a special container on the back of the appliance, where it evaporates.
Fig. 9
The freezer compartment, however, will become progressively covered with frost. This should be removed with the special plastic scraper provided, whenever the thickness of the frost exceeds 4 mm.
During this operation it is not necessary to switch off the power supply or to remove the foodstuffs. However, when the ice becomes very thick on the inner liner, complete defrosting should be carried out and it is advisable to carry out this operation when the appliance is empty.
16
To carry out complete defrosting of the ( ) freezer compartment proceed as follows:
Unplug the appliance from the power supply or set the thermostat to position «
O
». Remove the frozen foods and wrap them in several sheets of newspaper, then keep them in a cool place.
Leave the door open. Place a basin on the refrigerator compartment shelf
underneath the drainage hole and pull the plug downward (Fig. 10); to reinsert it, just push it up. The plug can be removed by pulling it downwards when the drainage hole is to be cleaned.
After complete defrosting dry the refrigerator compartment thoroughly. Reconnect the appliance to the power supply, start it up and, after half an hour, replace the foods previously removed from the freezer.
Fig. 10
Important
Remember that an increase in the surface temperature of already-frozen foods may significantly decrease their storage life. Never use knives or metal objects to scrape away the accumulated frost since you may damage the cooling circuit.

MAINTENANCE
D025
If the appliance is not functioning properly check that:
the plug is firmly in the wall socket and the mains power switch is on;
there is no power failure; the control knob is in the right position.
If there is water on the fridge bottom, make sure the defrost water drain hole is not clogged (Fig. 9).
To do this, use the cleaner provided which can be found in the drain hole.
If your appliance is still not working properly after making the above checks, contact your local dealer or the nearest service center.
To obtain fast service, it is essential that when you apply for it you specify the model and serial number of your appliance which can be found on the warranty certificate or inside the appliance on the rating plate.
Prior to undertaking any maintenance operation, be sure to unplug the appliance from the wall socket as a safety precaution. Clean the interior periodically with lukewarm water and some sodium bicarbonate; the cabinet exterior with a silicone wax spray; the condenser and the motor compressor with a brush or a vacuum cleaner. During periods when the appliance is not in use, take the following precautions: unplug the appliance from the power supply; remove all foodstuffs from the appliance; clean the interior and all accessories; leave the doors ajar to allow air to circulate inside the cabinet so as to prevent the formation of unpleasant odours.
Interior light bulb (Fig. 11)
The light inside the refrigerator compartment is easy to get at. If the light does not come on when the door is opened, make sure it is properly fitted; if the malfunction continues, replace the light bulb using a new light bulb with the same rating.
