NuApps-2544 is a test suite based on RFC-1242 and RFC-2544 for analyzing Ethernet
switches, bridges, and routers. The multiple topologies and the load generation
capabilities provide an effective way to evaluate Throughput, Latency, Packet Loss,
and Back-to-Back of a DUT in One-to-One, One-to-Many, Many-to-One configurations.
The real time display of test results and various customizable report formats make it
easy to view the test data and organize them into an appropriate form for debug, report,
and record.

Please note that the Latency test of NuApps-2544 is supported by XM-2202, XM-22R4
(port 1 must pair with port 2; port 3 with port 4), and XM-23R2 only when 2 ports are
connected within the same module.

2. Installation and Uninstallation

Bring out the InstallShield Wizard to prepare
to install.

Start Apps-2544 software installation. Click
Next to go to next step.

Read license agreement carefully before
selecting to accept all terms and click Next
to go to next step.

Set for the destination default route. Click
Next for next step.

Review and confirm installation settings.

2.1 Installation

Double click NuApps-2544.exe to start installing the software.

Click Install for next step.

NuApps-2544 installation is in progress.

NuApps-2544 has been installed
successfully. Click Finish to exit the Wizard.

The icon appears on the desktop.

2.2 Uninstallation

If applications do not work properly, it may be necessary to uninstall the software. Or
before updating a new version of the software, the previous version must be uninstalled
first.

There are two ways to uninstall NuApps-2544: Start Menu or Control Panel.

 Start Menu: Click on Windows Start menu → Programs → Xtramus → NuApps-

2544 → Uninstall NuApps-2544.

 Control Panel: Activate the Control Panel → Add/Remove Programs → NuApps-

2544 → Change/Remove.

3. Start NuApps-2544

Click NuApps-2544 icon to start the software.

Click Yes to bring up the local server.

Choose the NIC at which the server is located. In this case, it’s the NDIS 5.0 driver.

This is the main window of NuApps-2544. Please click the Connect to Server button
on the lower right of the window.

Use the scroll bar to show the IP address of the NDIS 5.0 driver. In this case, it’s

192.168.1.1.

4. Main Window

Open an existing configuration.
Save the current active configuration to

current workplace.
Save the current configuration in a new file.

Exit NuApps-2544.

Bring out the first toolbar.
Bring out the second toolbar.
Bring out the status bar in bottom window.
Switch window between results and configuration.

Run whichever the prior test(s).
Stop whichever the test(s) in progress.
Print out the test results.
Show preview before printout.
Save current results to an Excel file.
Go back to configuration window.

Show information of NuApps-2544 version.

4.1 Main Menu

The main window of the user interface is illustrated below. The top-level menu includes
the following major parts: File, View, Run and Help.

The menu toolbar on the top includes four submenus.

5. Port Configuration

5.1 Transmission

NuApps-2544 supports two directions of transmission: 1 port to 1 port and 1 port to
multiple ports (multiple ports to 1 port).

5.1.1 One to One Transmission

In this section, 1 to 1 transmission is demonstrated.

In this demonstration, two XM-2202 module cards, each has two 10/100M ports
individually, are inserted into the NuStreams chassis.

Choose any two of the ports…

and use the arrow key to pair them off. The following tab will be invoked when any port
is chosen.

5.1.2 One to Many (Many to One) Transmission

Choose 1 to M . The transmission mode is set as the source port
sending traffic to the other ports.

Use the arrow button to change direction for transmission. In this case,
1 to M mode is switched to M to 1 mode.

5.2 Bi-Directional

Check the button to run the test in two-way mode.

If it is desired to configure multiple ports all at once, click this button

Note: Latency Test does not support this function yet with the box checked.

5.3 Port Settings

Configure setting for individual port here. Please note that only two tabs are provided,
so only configure two ports at once.

Activate flow control to enforce transmitting port to send packets in same

speed with receiving port.

6. Test Configuration

To edit test configuration, use this dialogue. Choose the tabs of any four standard tests.
For the tab of Latency, choose Performing Synchronization to start the feature.

Use the dialogue of General (Packet Size) to edit the range for packet size variation.

Click Use Custom to invoke the window of Packet Size Customization for more
detailed settings.

Choose Learning Mode to enable the Device under Test (DUT) to create an address
table according to the source address in the received frame. If Never is chosen, the

address of current port will not be built into the table. If Once is chosen, the address of
current port will be learned to be built into the table only once. If Every Trial is chosen,
the address of current port will be built into the table very time. For Learning Retry, fill
in the number of packets to be sent through the ports chosen to be learned for building
address table.

Use this dialogue to activate layer 3 test. Choose Enable Router Test to start the test.

Choose Perform Next Hop Test to test the next layer 3 switch.

7. Throughput Test

Press the test launch button to start the Throughput test. The individual test tab for the
Throughput test will show after the test launch button is clicked.

Throughput Test determines the maximum throughput rate at which a DUT can support
the transmission of packets without dropping one. The test duration, packet length,
packet transmission rate can all be customized to meet the desired test condition. In
this case, the throughput of traffic from port (0,2,1) to port (0,2,2) is 148,809 bps with
64-byte packets.

Use the tabs at the bottom of the window to activate the individual Throughput test tab.
To end the test, press . Press to return to the main window.

8. Latency Test

Press the test launch button to start the Latency test. The individual test tab for the
Latency test will show after the test launch button is clicked.

NuApps-2544 provides the Latency information of DUT by measuring the time it takes
to forward a packet while under load. The load generated by NuStreams-2000/600 can
be customized in accordance with different packet length and last for a specified period
of time.

Use the tabs at the bottom of the window to activate the individual Latency test tab. To

9. Packet Loss Test

Press the test launch button to start the Packet Loss test. The individual test tab for the
Packet Loss test will show after the test launch button is clicked.

By measuring the percentage of packets that are not forwarded because of lack of
resource, the Packet Loss rate of DUT can be determined. The loading, and test
duration can be customized to simulate real-world scenario; thus, giving the user a
clear view of the performance limits of the DUT under different loading environments.

Use the tabs at the bottom of the window to activate the individual Packet Loss test tab.
To end the test, press . Press to return to the main window.

10. Back-to-Back Test

Press the test launch button to start the Back-to-Back test. The individual test tab for
the Back-to-Back test will show after the test launch button is clicked.

Back-to-Back Test measures the buffer capacity of the DUT by sending bursts of traffic
at the maximum frame rate and by measuring the longest burst size for which no
packets are dropped. For each packet length specified in test setup, the test is
automatically repeated to provide an accurate view of the buffer capacity of the DUT
under different conditions.

Use the tabs at the bottom of the window to activate the individual Back-to-Back test
tab. To end the test, press . Press to return to the main window.

Test Results includes all four individual tests: Throughput, Latency, Packet Loss, and
Back-to-Back.

Use the tabs at the bottom of the window to activate the Reports tab. Scroll down the
bar on the right side to see the complete test report data.
