The WS18A is designed to control lighting (Max 500w). Bulbs rated below 6w may flicker or operate erratically. If this is the case, use
another bulb rated at 6w or greater from a different bulb manufacturer. The switch can replace a single switch, however, it can also be
used where two switches control the same light (3-way). In this case a Companion Switch (CS277) is required and is sold separately.
A push-button is provided on each switch for local on/off control. (For 4-way operations, consult the CS277 instruction sheet)
WARNING: A Neutral (not Ground) connection is required for the WS18A Master Switch.
Installing the WS18A Module (single switch applications, diagram A)
• Disconnect the power at the circuit breaker panel.
• Remove the wall plate and unscrew the existing switch from its box.
• Remove the wires from the existing switch and connect them to the WS18A's black and blue wires, using the wire nuts provided.
• Connect the WS18A's White wire to Neutral (NOT Ground).
• Cap off the unused red wire with a wire nut (supplied). Make sure no bare whiskers of wire are protruding, use insulating tape to
cover wire nuts if necessary. Screw the switch into the wall box. Don't replace the wall plate yet.
Installing the WS18A and CS277 Modules (3-way applications, diagram B)
• Disconnect the power at the circuit breaker panel.
• Remove wall plates and unscrew the existing switches from their boxes. Identify the common wire at each existing switch (usually
connected to a different color terminal).
• Replace the existing primary switch with the WS18A Wall Switch (Master): connect the common wire to the black wire on the WS18A
using a wire nut. Connect the two remaining "traveler wires" to the red and blue wires on the WS18A, using wire nuts. If one of the
travelers are red (they may be a different color), connect it to the red wire on the WS18A.
• Connect the WS18A's White wire to Neutral (NOT Ground).
• Replace the other existing wall switch with the CS277 Companion Switch (sold separately): Connect the common wire to one of the
CS277's BLUE wires. Connect the traveler which you connected to the RED wire on the WS18A to the RED wire on the CS277.
Connect the remaining traveler wire to the second BLUE wire on the CS277. Screw both switches into their wall boxes. Don't replace
the wall plates yet.
Setting up and operating the WS18A Wall Switch
• Using a small screwdriver, set the House Code dial to the same letter (A thru P) that you set on your X10 controller(s).
• Set the Unit Code dial to an unused code (1 - 16) which can be controlled from any X10 controller.
• Refit the wall plates on both switches.
• Turn the power back on at the circuit breaker panel.
• Press the button to turn the module on and off. You should also notice the LED turn ON when the switch is in its OFF state. The LED
will also turn OFF when the switch is in the ON position. This LED is faint so as not to create a disturbance but still allow the operator
to find the switch at night.
• You can turn the module on and off from any X10 Controller using the house and unit code you just set for this switch.
