INFORMATION
OPERATE SAFELY
• Do not use the machine after you consume alcohol or medication or when you are tired.
• Put on applicable clothing and safety equipment.
• Use applicable tools only. Do not use alternative tools or parts.
• When 2 or more persons do servicing, make sure that you do it safely.
• Do not operate below the machine that only a jack holds. Always use a safety stand to hold the machine.
• Do not touch the hot parts or parts that turn when the engine operates.
• Do not remove the radiator cap when the engine operates, or immediately after it stops. If not, hot water can spout out from the radiator. Only remove the radiator cap when it is at a sufficiently low temperature to touch with bare hands. Slowly loosen the cap to release the pressure before you remove it fully.
• Released fluid (fuel or hydraulic oil) under pressure can cause damage to the skin and cause serious injury. Release the pressure before you disconnect hydraulic or fuel lines. Tighten all connections before you apply the pressure.
• Do not open a fuel system under high pressure. The fluid under high pressure that stays in fuel lines can cause serious injury. Do not disconnect or repair the fuel lines, sensors, or any other components between the fuel pump and injectors on engines with a common rail fuel system under high pressure.
• Put on an applicable ear protective device (earmuffs or earplugs) to prevent injury against loud noises.
• Be careful about electric shock. The engine generates a high voltage of more than DC100 V in the ECU and is applied to the injector.
WSM000001INI0012US1
PREVENT A FIRE
• Fuel is very flammable and explosive under some conditions. Do not smoke or let flames or sparks in your work area.
• To prevent sparks from an accidental short circuit, always disconnect the battery negative cable first and connect it last.
• The battery gas can cause an explosion. Keep the sparks and open flame away from the top of battery, especially when you charge the battery.
• Make sure that you do not spill fuel on the engine.

GENERAL
Engine Oil
• Oil used in the engine should have an American Petroleum Institute (API) service classification and Proper SAE Engine Oil according to the ambient temperatures as shown above:
• With the emission control now in effect, the CF-4 and CG-4 lubricating oils have been developed for use of a low-sulfur fuel on on-road vehicle engines. When an off-road vehicle engine runs on a high-sulfur fuel, it is advisable to employ the "CF or better" lubricating oil with a high Total Base Number (TBN of 10 minimum).
• Refer to the following table for the suitable API classification of engine oil according to the engine type (with internal EGR, external EGR or non-EGR) and the fuel: (low sulfur or high sulfur fuels).
Fuel used
Engine oil classification (API classification)
Oil class of engine except external EGR Oil class of engines with external EGR
CF
High Sulfur Fuel (≥ 500 ppm)
(If the "CF-4, CG-4, CH-4, or CI-4" lubricating oil is used with a high-sulfur fuel, change the lubricating oil at shorter
—
intervals. (approximately half))
Low Sulfur Fuel (< 500 ppm) or Ultra Low Sulfur Fuel (< 15 ppm)
CF, CF-4, CG-4, CH-4 or CI-4
CF, CI-4
(Class CF-4, CG-4 and CH-4 engine oils cannot be used on EGR type engines)
EGR: Exhaust Gas re-circulation
• The CJ-4 engine oil is intended for DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) type engines, and cannot be used on this tractor.
Without EGR With external EGR
Model B2420 –
Fuel
• Cetane number of 45 minimum. Cetane number greater than 50 is preferred, especially for temperatures below −20 °C (−4 °F) or elevations above 1500 m (5000 ft).
• If diesel sulfur content greater than 0.5 % sulfur content is used, reduce the service interval for engine oil and filter by 50 %.
• DO NOT use diesel fuel with sulfur content greater than 1.0 %.
• Diesel fuels specified to EN 590 or ASTM D975 are recommended.
• No.2-D is a distillate fuel of lower volatility for engines in industrial and heavy mobile service. (SAE J313 JUN87).
• Since this engine adopts EPA Tier 4 and Interim Tier 4 standards, the use of low sulfur fuel or ultra low sulfur fuel is mandatory in EPA regulated area (North America). Therefore, please use No.2-D S500 or S15 diesel fuel as an alternative to No.2-D, or use No.1-D S500 or S15 diesel fuel as an alternative to No.1-D if outside air temperature is below −10 °C (14 °F).
Transmission oil
• The oil used to lubricate the transmission is also used as hydraulic fluid. To insure proper operation of the hydraulic system and to complete lubrication of the transmission, it is important that a multi-grade transmission fluid is used in this system. We recommend the use of KUBOTA UDT or SUPER UDT fluid for optimum protection and performance. Do not mix different brands together.
• Indicated capacities of water and oil are manufacturer's estimate.

Checking Battery Condition
To avoid the possibility of battery explosion: For the refillable type battery, follow the instructions below.
• Do not use or charge the refillable type battery if the fluid level is below the LOWER (lower limit level) mark. Otherwise, the battery component parts may prematurely deteriorate, which may shorten the battery's service life or cause an explosion. Check the fluid level regularly and add distilled water as required so that the fluid level is between the UPPER and LOWER levels.
• Never remove the vent plugs while the engine is running.
• Keep electrolyte away from eyes, hands and clothes. If you are spattered with it, wash it away completely with water immediately and get medical attention.
• Wear eye protection and rubber gloves when working around battery.
1. Mishandling the battery shortens the service life and adds to maintenance costs.
2. The original battery is maintenance free type battery, but need some servicing.
3. If the battery is weak, the engine is difficult to start and the lights be dim. It is important check the battery periodically.

GENERAL
• When the battery is being activated, hydrogen and oxygen gases in the battery are extremely explosive. Keep open sparks and flames away from the battery at all times, especially when charging the battery.
• When charging battery, ensure the vent caps are securely in place. (if equipped)
• When disconnecting the cable from the battery, start with the negative terminal first. When connecting the cable to the battery, start with the positive terminal first.
• Never check battery charge by placing a metal object across the posts. Use a voltmeter or hydrometer.
1. Make sure each electrolyte level is to the bottom of vent wells, if necessary add distilled water in a well-ventilated area.
2. The water in the electrolyte evaporates during recharging. Liquid shortage damages the battery. Excessive liquid spills over and damages the tractor body.
3. To slow charge the battery, connect the battery positive terminal to the charger positive terminal and the negative to the negative, then recharge in the normal manner.
4. A boost charge is only for emergencies. It will partially charge the battery at a high rate and in a short time. When using a boost-charged battery, it is necessary to recharge the battery as early as possible. Failure to do this will shorten the battery's service life.
5. When the specific gravity of electrolyte is between 1.27 and
1.29, the charging is completed.
6. When exchanging an old battery for a new one, use battery of equal specification shown in table 1.

Cleaning Air Cleaner Element
1. Remove the air cleaner cover (3) and primary element (2).
2. Clean the primary element if: – When dry dust adheres to the element, blow compressed air
from the inside turning the element. Pressure of compressed air must be under 205 kPa (2.1 kgf/cm 30 psi).
– When carbon or oil adheres to the element, soak the
element in detergent for 15 minutes then wash it several times in water, rinse with clean water and dry it naturally. After element is fully dried, inspect inside of the element with a light and check if it is damaged or not.
3. When replacing the air cleaner primary element (2), replace the secondary element (1) as well: Once a year or after every six times of cleaning, whichever comes first.
• The air cleaner uses a dry element, never apply oil.
• Do not run the engine with filter element removed.
• Be sure to refit the dust cup with the arrow ↑ (on the rear of cup) upright. If the dust cup is improperly fitted, evacuator valve will not function and dust will adhere to the element.
• Do not touch the secondary element except in cases where replacing is required.

Q Anti-Freeze
To avoid personal injury:
• When using antifreeze, put on some protection such as rubber gloves (Antifreeze contains position).
• If should drink antifreeze, throw up at once and take medical attention.
• When antifreeze comes in contact with the skin or clothing, wash it off immediately.
• Do not mix different type of antifreeze. The mixture can produce chemical reaction causing harmful substances
• Antifreeze is extremely flammable and explosive under certain conditions. Keep fire and children away from antifreeze.
• When draining fluids from the engine, place some container underneath the engine body.
• Do not pour waste onto the grounds, down a drain, or into any water source.
• Also, observe the relevant environmental protection regulations when disposing of antifreeze.
If it freezes, coolant can damage the cylinders and radiator. If
the ambient temperature falls below 0 °C (32 °F) or before a long-term storage, let out cooling water completely, or mix fresh water with long-life coolant and fill the radiator and reserve tank with the mixture.
1. Long-life coolant (hereafter LLC) comes in several types. Use ethylene glycol (EG) type for this engine.
2. Before employing LLC-mixed cooling water, fill the radiator with fresh water and empty it again. Repeat this procedure 2 or 3 times to clean up the inside.
3. Mixing the LLC Put the LLC in cooling water in the percentage (%) for a target temperature. When mixing, stir it up well, and then fill into the radiator.
4. The procedure for the mixing of water and antifreeze differs according to the make of the antifreeze and the ambient temperature. Refer to SAE J1034 standard, more specifically also to SAE J814c.

5. Adding the LLC – Add only water if the mixture reduces in amount by
evaporation.
– If there is a mixture leak, add the LLC of the same
manufacture and type in the same mixture percentage. *Never add any long-life coolant of different manufacture. (Different brands may have different additive components, and the engine may fail to perform as specified.
6. When the LLC is mixed, do not employ any radiator cleaning agent. The LLC contains anticorrosive agent. If mixed with the cleaning agent, sludge may build up, adversely affecting the engine parts.
7. KUBOTA's genuine long-life coolant has a service life of 2 years. Be sure to change the coolant every 2 years.
• The above data represent industry standards that necessitate a minimum glycol content in the concentrated anti-freeze.
• When the coolant level drops due to evaporation, add water only to keep the antifreeze mixing ratio less than 50 %. In case of leakage, add antifreeze and water in the specified mixing ratio before filling in to the radiator.

[2] TREAD ADJUSTMENT
To avoid personal injury:
• When working on slopes or when working with trailer, set the wheel tread as wide as practical for maximum stability.
• Support tractor securely on stands before removing a wheel.
• Do not work under any hydraulically supported devices. They can settle, suddenly leak down, or be accidentally lowered. If necessary to work under tractor or any machine elements for servicing or adjustment, securely support them with stands or suitable blocking beforehand.
• Never operate tractor with a loose rim, wheel or axle.
• Always attach tires as shown in the figure.
• If not attached as the figure, transmission parts may be damaged.
• Do not use tires larger than specified.

[3] TIRE LIQUID INJECTION
Auxiliary weights can be used to increase traction force for plowing in fields or clayey ground.
Another way is to inject water or another liquid, such as a calcium chloride solution in the tires. Water must not be used in winter since it freezes at 0 °C (32 °F). The calcium chloride solution will not freeze and moreover, affords higher effect than water since its specific gravity is higher than that of water by about 20 %. Below is an explanation of calcium chloride solution injection.
• Do not fill the front tires with liquid.
9Y1210436GEG0024US0
Preparation of Calcium Chloride Solution
• When making a calcium chloride solution, do not pour water over calcium chloride since this results in chemical reaction which will cause high temperature. Instead add a small amount of calcium chloride to the water at a time until the desired solution is achieved.

Injection
• When a calcium chloride solution is used, cool it before pouring it into the tire.
• Do not fill tires with water or solution more than 75 % of full capacity (to the valve stem level).
• To avoid damage of transmission, do not use rear wheel weights and liquid ballast at the same time.
The following four ways can be used to inject water or a calcium
chloride solution into tires.
1. Gravity injection (Fig. 1)
2. Pump injection (Fig. 2)
3. Pressure tank injection (Fig. 3)
4. Injection directly from tap (only when water is being used).
• Once injection is completed, reset the air valve, and pump air into the tire to the specified pressure.

ENGINE
(1) Rocker Arm (2) Oil Pressure Switch (3) Rocker Arm Shaft (4) Valve (5) Governor Shaft (6) Idle Gear (7) Crankshaft (8) Oil Pump (9) Oil Strainer (10) Relief Valve (11) Push Rod (12) Tappet (13) Camshaft (14) Piston (15) Connecting Rod (16) Oil Filter Cartridge
This engine's lubricating system consists of oil strainer (9), oil pump (8), relief valve (10), oil filter cartridge (16) and oil pressure switch (2). The oil pump (8) sucks lubricating oil from the oil pan through the oil strainer (9) and the oil flows down to the filter cartridge (16), where it is further filtered. Then the oil is forced to crankshaft, connecting rods (15), idle gear (6), camshaft (13) and rocker arm shaft (3) to lubricate each part.
Some part of oil, splashed by the crankshaft (7) or leaking and dropping from gaps of each part, lubricates these parts: pistons (14), cylinders, small ends of connecting rods (15), tappets (12), push rods (11), inlet and exhaust valves and timing gears.

2. COOLING SYSTEM

ENGINE
(1) Radiator (2) Cooling Fan (3) Thermostat (4) Water Pump (5) Cylinder Head Water Jacket (6) Cylinder Block Water Jacket
The cooling system consists of a radiator (1), a centrifugal water pump (4), a cooling fan (2) and a thermostat (3). The water is cooled as it flows through the radiator core, and the cooling air through the radiator core by cooling
fan (2).
The water pump (4) receives water from the radiator (1) or from the cylinder head and force it into the cylinder
block.
The thermostat (3) opens or closes according to the water temperature.
When the water temperature is high, the thermostat (3) opens to allow the water to flow from the cylinder head to the radiator (1). When the water temperature is low, the thermostat close to flow the water only to the water pump (4). The opening temperature of the thermostat (3) is approx 82 °C (179.6 °F).

3. FUEL SYSTEM

ENGINE
(1) Fuel Tank (2) Fuel Overflow Pipe (3) Injection Nozzle (4) Fuel Injection Pipe (5) Injection Pump (6) Fuel Feed Pump (7) Fuel Filter
(a) Fuel Flow
Fuel from the fuel tank (1) passes thought the fuel filter (7), and then enters the injection pump (5) after impurities
such as dirt, water, etc. are removed.
The fuel pressurized by the injection pump (5) to the opening pressure (13.73 to 14.71 MPa, 140 to 150 kgf/cm
1991 to 2062 psi), of the injection nozzle (3) is injected into the combustion chamber.
A part of the fuel fed to the injection nozzle (3) lubricates the moving parts of the plunger inside the nozzle, then
returns to the fuel tank (1) through the fuel overflow pipe (2) from the upper part of the nozzle holder.

1. Run the engine until it is warmed up.
2. Stop the engine.
3. Remove the air cleaner, the muffler and all injection nozzles.
4. Keep the engine stop lever at "Stop Position".
5. Engage the parking brake.
6. Set a compression tester (Code No. 07909-30208) with the adaptor (Adaptor H, Code No. 07909-31231) to the nozzle hole.
7. While cranking the engine with the starter, measure the compression pressure.
8. Repeat steps 6 and 7 for each cylinder.
9. If the measurement is below the allowable limit, apply a small amount of oil to the cylinder wall through the nozzle hole and measure the compression pressure again.
10. If the compression pressure is still less than the allowable limit, check the top clearance, valve clearance and cylinder head.
11. If the compression pressure increases after applying oil, check the cylinder wall and piston rings.
• Check the compression pressure with the specified valve clearance.
• Always use a fully charged battery for preforming this test.
• Variances in cylinder compression values should be under 10 %.

Valve Clearance
• Valve clearance must be checked and adjusted when engine is cold.
1. Remove the head cover, the glow plugs and the timing window (3) cover on the clutch housing.
2. Align the "1TC" marking line (4) on the flywheel and center of timing window so that the No. 1 piston comes to the compression top dead center.
3. Check the following valve clearance marked with "," using a feeler gauge.
4. If the clearance is not within the factory specifications, loosen the lock nut (2) and adjust with the adjusting screw (1).
5. Turn the flywheel 6.28 rad (360 °) and align the "1TC" marking line and the center of timing window.
6. Check the remaining valve clearance in a same way.
Valve clearance "A" Factory specification

0.00571 to 0.0728 in.
• The "TC" marking line on the flywheel is just for No. 1 cylinder. There is no "TC" marking for the other cylinders.
• No. 1 piston comes to the T.D.C. position when the "TC" marking line is aligned with center of timing window on clutch-housing. Turn the flywheel 0.26 rad (15 °) clockwise and counterclockwise to see if the piston is at the compression top dead center or the overlap position. The piston is at the compression top dead center when both the IN. and EX. valves do not move; it is at the overlap position when both the valves move.
• After turning the flywheel counterclockwise twice or three times, recheck the valve clearance, firmly tighten the lock nut of the adjusting screw.
• The sequence of cylinder numbers is given as No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 starting from the gear case side.
