Check Your Vent System For Good Air Flow
Maintain good air ow by:
n
Cleaning your lint screen before each load.
n
Replace plastic or foil vent material with 4" (102 mm) diameter heavy, rigid vent material.
n
Use the shortest length of vent possible.
n
Use no more than four 90° elbows in a vent system; each bend and curve reduces air ow.
Good Air Flow
Along with heat, dryers require good air ow to efciently dry laundry. Proper venting will reduce your drying times and improve your energy savings. See Installation Instructions.
The venting system attached to the dryer plays a big role in good air ow.
Service calls caused by improper venting are not covered by the warranty and will be paid by the customer, regardless of who installed the dryer.
n
Remove lint and debris from the exhaust hood.
n
Remove lint from the entire length of the vent system at least every 2 years. When cleaning is complete, be sure to follow the Installation Instructions supplied with your dryer for nal product check.
n
Clear away items from the front the dryer.

Unusual sounds
Possible Causes
Is the dryer door rmly closed.
Was the start button rmly touched.
Has a household fuse blown, or has a circuit breaker tripped?
Is the correct power supply available?
Was a regular fuse used?
Has the dryer had a period of non-use?
Is a coin, button, or paper clip caught between the drum and front or rear of the dryer?
Is it a gas dryer?
Are the four legs installed, and is the dryer level front to back and side to side?
Is the clothing knotted or balled up?
Solution
Open door, reclose rmly, and press START.
Make sure Start button was rmly pressed.
There may be 2 household fuses or circuit breakers for the dryer. Check that both fuses are intact and tight, or that both circuit breakers have not tripped. Replace the fuse or reset the circuit breaker. If the problem continues, call an electrician.
Electric dryers require 240-volt power supply. Check with a qualied electrician.
Use a time-delay fuse.
If the dryer hasnt been used for a while, there may be a thumping sound during the rst few minutes of operation.
Check the front and rear edges of the drum for small objects. Clean out pockets before laundering.
The gas valve clicking is a normal operating sound.
The dryer may vibrate if not properly installed. See “Installation Instructions.”
When balled up, the load will bounce, causing the dryer to vibrate. Separate the load items and restart the dryer.
No heat
Has a household fuse blown, or has a circuit breaker tripped?
Is the valve open on the gas supply line on gas models?
Dryer displaying code message

If you experience
Dryer displaying code message (cont.)
Clothes are not drying satisfactorily, drying times are too long
Possible Causes
“AF” (low airow condition):
Is the lint screen clogged with lint?
Is the exhaust vent or outside exhaust hood clogged with lint, restricting air movement?
Solution
The dryer will continue to run when this diagnostic code is present. Touch any key to clear the code from the display and return to the estimated time remaining.
Try the following:
Clean lint screen. Check to see if the vent run from the dryer to the wall is crushed
or kinked. Conrm the vent run from the dryer to the wall is free of lint and
debris. Conrm the exterior vent exhaust hood is free of lint and debris. Conrm your vent system falls within the recommended run
length and number of elbows for the type of vent you are using. Refer to “Plan Vent System” in the Installation Instructions for details.
Select a Timed Dry heated cycle, and restart the dryer. If the message persists, have your entire home venting run
cleaned.
Lint screen should be cleaned before each load.
Run the dryer for 5-10 minutes. Hold your hand under the outside exhaust hood to check air movement. If you do not feel air movement, clean exhaust system of lint or replace exhaust vent with heavy metal or exible metal vent. See Installation Instructions.”
Are fabric softener sheets blocking the grille?
Is the exhaust vent the correct length?
Is the exhaust vent diameter the correct size?
Is the dryer located in a room with temperature below 45ºF (7ºC)?
Is the dryer located in a closet?
Has the Air Only modier been selected?
Is the load too large and heavy to dry quickly?
Are clothes coming out of the Quick Refresh cycle with damp or wet spots?
Use only one fabric softener sheet, and use it only once.
Check that the exhaust vent is not too long or has too many turns. Long venting will increase drying times. See “Installation Instructions.”
Use 4" (102 mm) diameter vent material.
Proper operation of dryer cycles requires temperatures above 45ºF (7ºC).
Closet doors must have ventilation openings at the top and bottom of the door. The rear of the dryer requires 5" (127 mm) of airspace, and the sides and front of the dryer require a minimum of 1" (25 mm). See “Installation Instructions.”
Select the right temperature for the types of garments being dried. See “Additional Features.”
Separate the load to tumble freely.
Under certain environmental or installation conditions you may experience under drying. Select the Timed Dry cycle (30 min. default time), which can be customized by choosing temperature by touching TEMP and/or cycle time by touching the Time Adjust up or down buttons.
19
First try the solutions suggested here or visit our website at www.whirlpool.com/help
for assistance and to possibly avoid a service call.
If you experience
Load is too hot
Cycle time too short
Lint on load
Possible Causes
Were laundry items removed from the dryer before the end of the cycle.
Was a high temperature cycle used, or was a separate temperature control set on high.
Is the automatic cycle ending early?
Is the lint screen clogged?
Solution
Allow the Cool Down cycle to nish before removing laundry from dryer. All cycles are cooled slowly to reduced wrinkling and make it easier to handle. Items removed before Cool Down may feel very warm.
Select a lower temperature, and use an automatic drying cycle. These cycles sense the temperature or the moisture level in the load and shut off when the load reaches the selected dryness. This reduces overdrying.
The load may not be contacting the sensor strips. Level the dryer.
Use Timed Dry for very small loads. Change the dryness level setting on Automatic Cycles. Increasing or decreasing the dryness level will change the amount of drying time in a cycle. If loads are consistently ending too early, see also Changing the Automatic Dry Default Settings.
Clean lint screen. Check for air movement.
