OPERATOR SAFETY
DANGER:
HANDS AND FEET AWAY FROM TINES AND CUTTING AREA. Rotating tines can cause serious injury. Do not attempt to clear away cut material or hold material to be cut when the engine/motor is running. Make sure powerhead is stopped and spark plug wire is disconnected (or powerhead is disconnected from power source) when removing jammed material from the tines. Do not grab or hold attachment by the tines.
WARNING:
tines. You and others can be blinded/injured. Wear eye and leg protection.
Keep children, bystanders, and animals 30 feet (10 meters) away. Stop unit immediately if approached.

tired, ill, upset, or under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medication. Watch what you are doing; use common sense. Wear hearing protection.

cover in place and properly secured.
FUEL SAFETY (for gas powerheads)
Mix and pour fuel outdoors.
S
Keep away from sparks or flames.
S
Use a container approved for fuel.
S
Do not smoke or allow smoking near fuel or
S
the powerhead. Avoid spilling fuel or oil. Wipe up all fuel
S
spills before starting the powerhead. Move at least 10 feet (3 meters) away from
S
fueling site before starting powerhead engine. Stop engine and allow to cool before re-

moving fuel cap. Remove fuel cap slowly.
S
Store unit and fuel in an area where fuel va-

ELECTRICAL SAFETY (for electric powerheads)
WARNING:
ronment. To reduce the risk of electrical shock, do not use in rain, in damp or wet locations, or around swimming pools, hot tubs, etc. Do not expose to snow, rain, or water to avoid the possibility of electrical shock. Do not handle extension cord plug or unit with wet hands.
Use only a voltage supply as shown on the
S
nameplate of the unit. Avoid dangerous situations. Do not use in
S
presence of flammable liquids or gases to avoid creating a fire or explosion and/or causing damage to unit.
Avoid a dangerous envi-

Avoid dangerous environments. Do not
S
use in unventilated areas or where dust or explosive vapors can build up. To reduce the risk of electrical shock, use
S
extension cords specifically marked as suitable for outdoor appliances. The electrical rating of the cord must not be less than the rating of the unit. The cord must be marked with the suffix “W-A” (in Canada, “W”). Make sure your extension cord is in good condition. Inspect extension cord before use and replace if damaged. An undersized extension cord will cause a drop in line voltage resulting in loss of power and overheating. If in doubt, use the next heavier gauge. The smaller the gauge number, the heavier the cord. Do not use multiple cords.
S
The powerhead may have a polarized plug
S
(one blade is wider than the other); if so, it will require the use of a polarized extension cord. The appliance plug will fit into a polarized extension cord only one way. If the plug does not fit fully into the extension cord, reverse the plug. If the plug still does not fit, obtain a correct polarized extension cord. A polarized extension cord will require the use of a polarized wall outlet. This plug will fit into the polarized wall outlet only one way. If plug does not fit fully into the wall outlet, reverse the plug. If it still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician to install the proper wall outlet. Do not change the equipment plug, extension cord receptacle, or extension cord plug in any way. Do not attempt to repair unit. Inspect the in-
S
sulation and connectors on the powerhead and extension cord before each use. If there is any damage, do not use until damage is repaired by your authorized service center. Do not pull or carry by cord; do not use cord
S
as a handle, close a door on cord, or pull cord around sharp edges or corners. Keep cord away from heated surfaces. Do not unplug by pulling on cord. To unplug, grasp the plug, not the cord. Do not use the powerhead if the switch
S
does not turn the unit on and off properly. Have the unit repaired by your authorized service center. Keep the extension cord clear of operator
S
and obstacles at all times. Do not expose cords to heat, oil, water, or sharp edges. Avoid any body contact with any grounded
S
conductor, such as metal fences, or pipes, to avoid the possibility of electric shock. Don’t handle plug or unit with wet hands. Do not use with damaged cord or plug. If
S
powerhead is not working as it should, has been dropped, damaged, left outdoors, or dropped into water, return it to your authorized service center for repair. Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI)
S
protection should be provided on the circuit or outlet to be used for the powerhead. Receptacles are available having built-in GFCI protection and may be used for this measure of safety.
DOUBLE INSULATION CONSTRUCTION
Your powerhead should be double insulated to help protect against electric shock. Double insulation construction consists of two separate “layers” of electrical insulation instead of grounding. Tools and appliances built with a double insulation system are not intended to be grounded. Safety precautions must be observed when operating any electrical tool. The double insulation system only provides added protection against injury resulting from an internal electrical insulation failure.
WARNING:
powerhead, including housing, switch, motor, etc., must be diagnosed and repaired by qualified service personnel. Replacement parts for a double insulated appliance must be identical to the parts they replace. A double insulated appliance is marked with the words “double insulation” or “double insulated”. Thesymbol (square within a square) may also be marked on the appliance. Failure to have the unit repaired by your authorized service dealer can causethe double insulation construction to become ineffective and result in serious injury.

UNIT/MAINTENANCE SAFETY
WARNING:
spark plug (or disconnect powerhead from power source) before performing maintenance.
Inspect entire unit before each use. Re-
S
place damaged parts. Check for fuel leaks. Make sure all fasteners are in place and securely fastened. Maintain unit according to recommended
S
procedures. Have all maintenance and service not ex-
S
plained in this manual performed by an authorized service center. Throw away tines that are bent, warped,
S
cracked, broken, or damaged in any other way. Replace parts that are cracked, chipped, or damaged before using the unit. Use only recommended Weed Eater!parts
S
and accessories. Never use wire, wire rope, string, flailing devices, etc. Be sure tines stop turning when engine
S
idles (see CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENTS section of powerhead manual). Remove the tines before making carburetor
S
adjustments. Hold the unit by hand. Keep others away when making carburetor
S
adjustments. Never start the unit with the clutch housing
S
removed. The clutch can fly off and cause serious injury. Avoid heavy contact with solid objects that
S
might stop the tines. If heavy contact occurs, stop the unit and inspect for damage. If tines strike a foreign object, follow these
S
steps: stop unit and disconnect spark plug wire (or disconnect from power source), inspect for damage, and repair any damage before resuming operation of the unit.
