UNIT/MAINTENANCE SAFETY
S Look for and replace damaged or loose
parts before eachuse. Lookfor andrepair fuel leaks before use. Keep unit in good working condition.
S Throwaway blades thatare bent,warped,
cracked,broken,ordamagedinany other way.Replacetrimmerheadpartsthatare cracked,chipped,broken,ordamagedin any other way before using the unit.

FUEL SAFETY
S Mix and pour fuel outdoors. S Keep away from sparks or flames. S Use a container approved for fuel. S Donotsmokeor allowsmokingnearfuelor
the unit or while using the unit.
S Wipeupallfuelspillsbeforestartingengine. S Moveatleast10feet(3meters)awayfromfu-
eling site before starting engine.
S Stopengineand allowit tocool beforere-
moving fuel cap.
S Emptythefueltankbeforestoringtheunit.
Useupfuelleftinthecarburetorby starting the engine and letting it run until it stops.

CUTTING SAFETY
S Inspecttheareatobecutbeforeeachuse.
Remove objects (rocks, broken glass, nails,wire,string,etc.) whichcanbethrown orbecome entangledin theblade ortrim­mer head.
S Keepothersincludingchildren,animals,by-
standers,andhelpersatleast50feet(15 me­ters)away.Stopengine immediatelyifyouare approached.
S Always keepengineontheright--handside
of your body.
S Hold the unit firmly with both hands. S Keepfirmfootingandbalance.Donotover-
reach.
S Keep blade or trimmer head below waist
level.
S Do not raise engine above your waist. S Keep all parts of your body away from
blade,trimmer head, andmuffler whenen­gine is running.
S Cut from your right to your left. S Useonlyforjobsexplainedinthis manual.
TRANSPORTING AND STORAGE
S Stop the unit before carrying. S Keep muffler away from your body. S Allowtheenginetocoolandsecuretheunit
beforestoringor transportingitinavehicle.
S Empty thefueltankbeforestoringortrans-
portingtheunit.Useupfuelleftinthecarbu­retor bystartingtheengineandletting itrun until it stops.
S Storeunitandfuelinanareawherefuelva-
porscannotreachsparksoropenflames from water heaters, electric motors or switches, furnaces, etc.
S Storeunitsothebladeor line limitercannot
accidentallycauseinjury.Theunit canbe hung by the tube.
S Store unit out of reach of children.

S Tryonshoulderstrapandadjustforfitand
balancebeforestartingtheengineorbegin­ning a cutting operation.
S Insertyourrightarmandheadthroughthe
shoulderstrapandallowit torest onyour leftshoulder.Makesurethedangersignis on your back and the hook is to theright side of your waist.
NOTE:Aone-halftwistis builtintheshoulder
straptoallowthestraptorestflatontheshoul­der.
S Adjust the strap, allowing the hook to be
about 6 inches below the waist.
S Fastenthestraphook tothe clamplocated
betweenthetriggerhandleandthemount­ing block and lift the tool to the operating position.
CONFIGURING YOUR UNIT
Y ou can configure your unit using a cutting head for grass and light weeds, or a weed bladefor cuttinggrass, weeds,and brushup to1/2inchindiameter.Toassembleyourunit, gotothesectionfor thedesiredconfiguration and follow the instructions.

DANGER:Thebarrierportionofthehandlebar
mustbeinstalledasshowntoprovideabarrier between operator and the spinning blade.
S Locatethedecalonthehandlebar.Thisde-
calincludestwoarrows.Positionthehan­dlebarwiththemountingbracketbetween these arrows.
S Positionthebracketcoverover thehandle-
bar.Againmakesurethehandlebaris be­tween the arrows.
S Insert screws and hand tighten only. Be
sure the handlebar is installed correctly; then,tighteneachscrewsecurelywiththe short hex wrench.

W ARNING:The shield must be properly
installed.Theshieldprovidespartialprotection fromtherisk ofthrownobjectstotheoperator andothersandisequippedwithalinelimiter whichcutsexcesslinetotheproperlength.The linelimiter(onundersideofshield)is sharpand can cut you.
S Remove wing nut from shield. S Insert bracket into slot on shield. S Pivotshielduntilboltpassesthroughholein
bracket.
S Tighten the wing nut securely. S If your unit has a plastic cover over the
threads onthe threadedshaft, removethe covering to expose the threads.
S Before installing the trimmer head, make
surethedustcupandretainingwasher are positionedonthegearboxas shownbelow.

Failure to install the shield in the positionshowncanresultinseriousinjury to theoperator.Thelengthoftheshieldmustbe alignedwiththelengthofthetube.Theblade is sharp and can cut you. Be sure to wear gloves while working with blades.
S If your unit has a plastic cover over the
threadsontheshaft,removethecovering to expose the threads.
S Turnunitover (threadsonshaftfacingup),
place the metal shield over the gearbox, and align the screw holes.
NOTE: Make sure all parts are properly
installedas illustratedintheillustrationbefore installing the trimmer head. S Alignholeinthedustcupwiththeholeinthe
sideofthegearboxby rotatingthedustcup.
S Insert a small screwdriver into aligned
holes.Thiswillkeeptheshaftfromturning while tightening trimmer head.

thread trimmer head onto theshaft inthe directionshownonthedecal.Tightenuntil secure.
NOTE:Theretainingwashermustbeposi-
tionedwiththeraisedsectionfacingtowardthe gearbox.

bottomoftheshield.Threadthem intothe gearbox.Tightenevenly andsecurelywith one of the hex wrenches provided.

teninghardwareotherthanthewashers and nuts illustrated in the following illustrations. Thesepartsmustbeprovidedby WeedEater, andinstalledasshownbelow.Failuretouse proper partscancausethebladetoflyoffand seriously hurt you or others.
NOTE:Thedustcupandretainingwasherare
locatedonthegearboxandnotinthepartsbag. S Removetheretainer washerfromthegear-
box,andleavethedustcuponthegearbox.
NOTE:Itmaybenecessarytoremovea
plastic protective covering from the threadedshaftbeforeremovingtheretain­ing washer.
NOTE:Ifyourunithasbeenassembledfor
trimmerheaduse,referto thesectionATTACH­ING THEPLASTICSHIELDANDTRIMMER HEADandreversethestepsto removethe plastic shield and trimmer head beforeyou mountthemetalshieldandblade.Storethese partsforfutureuse.Neveruse thetrimmerhead with the metal blade installed.

tendingfromthegearbox betweenthedust cup andthe retainingwasher. Makesure the raised part of the retaining washer is facingthegearbox,andtheraisedareafits into the hole in the center of the blade.

Thisengineiscertifiedtooperateonunleaded gasoline.Gasolinemustbemixedwithagood quality2-cycleair-cooled engineoildesignedto bemixedataratioof40:1.Poulan/WeedEater brandoilis recommended.(A40:1ratioisob­tainedbymixing3.2ouncesofoilwith1gallonof unleadedgasoline).Whenmixing fuelfollowthe instructions printedonthe container.Always readandfollowthesafety rules underFUEL SAFETY .

NOTE:Makesureallpartsareinplaceasillus-
trated,andthebladeissandwichedbetween thedustcupandtheretainingwasher.There shouldbenospacebetweenthebladeandthe dust cup or the retaining washer.
S Align hole in dust cup with hole in side of
gearbox by rotating the blade.
S Insert a small screwdriver into aligned
holes.Thiswillkeeptheshaftfromturning while tightening the blade nut.

S Tightenbladenutfirmly withawrenchwhile
holding screwdriver in position.
S Remove the screwdriver. S Turn blade by hand. If the blade binds
againsttheshield,or appearstobeuneven, thebladeis notcentered, andyou mustre­install.
NOTE:Toremoveblade,insertscrewdriver
intoalignedholes.Un-threadthenutandre­moveparts.Besuretostorepartsandinstruc­tions for future use.
STARTING
STOPPING YOUR ENGINE
S Move the ON/STOP switch to STOP . S If engine does not stop, move choke to
the FULL CHOKE position.
ST ARTINGYOUR ENGINE
W ARNING: The trimmer head will turn
whilestartingtheengine. Avoidany contact withthemuffler.Ahotmuffler can causeseri­ous burns. S Restengineandshieldonground,support-
ing trimmer head off ground.
COLD ENGINE OR W ARMENGINE AFTER RUNNING OUT OF FUEL
S Move the switch to the ON position. S Slowly press the primer bulb 6 times.
SMovechokelever toFULL CHOKEposi-
tion.

USING YOUR UNIT
OPERA TING POSITION
S Left arm extended with hand holding the
handlebar grip.
S Righthandholding throttlegrip withfinger
on throttle trigger.
S Engine below waist level. S Shoulderstrappadcenteredonleftshoul-
der.
S Danger sign centered on your back. S Full weight of tool on left shoulder. S Withoutoperator bendingover,thebladeor
trimmer head is near and parallel to the groundandeasilycontactsmaterial tobe cut.
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE WITH TRIMMER HEAD
Beforetrimming,bringenginetoaspeedsuffi­cient to cut material to be trimmed. Donotrunengineatahigherspeed thanneces­sary.Thecuttinglinewillcutefficientlywhen the engineisrunatless than fullthrottle. Atlower speeds,thereislessengine noiseandvibration. Thecuttinglinewilllastlongerandwillbeless likely to “weld” onto the spool. Iftrimmerheaddoesnotturnwhentheengine is inoperation,makesurethetube isproperly seated in engine shroud. Alwaysreleasethethrottletriggerandallow the engine to return to idle speed whennot cutting. To stop engine:
S Move the switch to STOP . S If engine does not stop, move choke to
the FULL CHOKE position.
ADVANCING THE TRIMMER LINE
Trimmerlinewilladvanceapproximately2 in.(5 cm)eachtimethebottomofthetrimmerheadis tappedonthegroundwiththeenginerunningat full throttle.
Themostefficientlinelengthisthemaximum length allowed by line limiter.
Always keeptheshieldin placewhen thetool is being operated.
To Advance Line:
S Operate the engine at full throttle. S Holdthetrimmer headparalleltoandabove
the grassy area.
S Tap bottom of trimmer headlightly onthe
groundonetime.Approximately 2in.(5cm) of line will be advanced with each tap. A
blade on the shield will cut the line to the correct length.
Alwaystapthetrimmerheadonagrassyarea. Tappingonsurfaces suchasconcreteoras­phaltcancauseexcessiveweartothe trimmer head.
Iflineis worndownto2in.(5cm)orless,more thanonetapwillberequiredtoobtainthemost efficient line length.
W ARNING:Useonly.080”(2mm)diame-
ter line. Other sizes of linewill notadvance properly andcancauseseriousinjury.Donot useother materialssuchaswire,string,rope, etc.Wirecanbreak off duringcutting andbe­comeadangerousmissilethatcancausese­rious injury.
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE WITH WEED BLADE
S BladeThrustis a reactionthat onlyoccurs
whenusingabladedunit.This reactioncan causeseriousinjurysuchasamputation. Carefullystudythissection.Itisimportantthat youunderstandwhatcauses bladethrust, howyoucanreducethechanceofitsoccur­ring,andhowyoucanremainincontrolofunit if blade thrust occurs.
S WHA TCAUSESBLADETHRUST --Blade
Thrustcanoccurwhenthespinningblade contacts anobjectthatit doesnot cut.This contactcausesthebladeto stopforaninstant andthensuddenlymoveor“thrust”away fromtheobjectthatwashit.The“thrusting”re­actioncanbeviolentenoughtocausethe op­eratortobepropelledinanydirection andlose controloftheunit.Theuncontrolledunitcan causeseriousinjuryifthebladecontactsthe operator or others.
S WHEN BLADE THRUST OCCURS --
Blade thrust can occurwithout warningif the blade snags, stalls, or binds. This is morelikely tooccurinareaswhereitisdiffi­culttoseethematerialbeingcut.By using theunitproperly, theoccurrence ofblade thrustwillbereducedandtheoperator will be less likely to lose control.
S Cutonlygrass,weeds,andwoody brushup
to1/2inchindiameterwiththeweedblade. Donotletthebladecontactmaterialitcan­not cut such as stumps, rocks, fences, metal,etc.,orclustersofhard,woodybrush having a diameter greater than 1/2 inch.

S Keepthebladesharp.Adullbladeis more
10o’clock
likely to snag and thrust.
S Cutonlyatfullthrottle.Thebladewillhave
maximumcuttingpower andislesslikelyto bind or stall.
S “Feed” the blade deliberately and nottoo
rapidly.Thebladecanthrustaway ifit isfed too rapidly.
S Cutonly from yourright toyour left.Swing-
ing the unit in the same direction as the blade spins increases the cutting action.
S Usetheshoulder strapandkeepafirmgrip
ontheunitwithbothhands.Aproperly ad­justed shoulder strap will support the weight of the unit, freeing your arms and handstocontrolandguidethecuttingmo­tion.
S Keep feet comfortably spread apart and
bracedforapossiblesudden,rapidthrustof unit.Donotoverreach.Keepfirmfootingand balance.
S Keepbladebelowwaistlevel;itwillbeeas-
ier to maintain control of unit.
S Donotraisetheengineaboveyour waistas
thebladecancomedangerously closeto your body.
S Donotswingunitwithsuchforcethatyou
are in danger of losing your balance.
Bringtheenginetocuttingspeedbeforeen­tering the material to be cut.
Ifthebladedoes not turnwhen yousqueeze thethrottletrigger,makesuretubeisfully in­serted into the engine.
Alwaysreleasethethrottletriggerandallow enginetoreturn toidle speedwhen notcut­ting.Thebladeshouldnot turnwhile theen­gineis runningatidle.Ifthe bladeturns atidle, donotuseyour unit. Referto theCarburetor adjustment section or contact your Autho­rized Service Dealer.
S Maintain goodfirm footingwhile usingthe
unit.Dothis byplantingfeet firmlyin acom­fortable apart position.
S Cut while swingingthe upperpart ofyour
body from right to left.
S As youmoveforwardtothenextareatocut,
besuretomaintainyour balance andfoot­ing.
Cut using the 8 o’clock to 10 o’clock position of the blade

W ARNING:The operator or othersmust
nottrytoclearaway cut materialwith theen­ginerunningor thebladeturningtoavoidseri­ousinjury.Stopengineandblade beforere­moving materials wrappedaround bladeor tube.
REPLACING THE LINE
S Pushandholdtheenginestopswitchinthe
stop/off position until the unit has fully stopped.
S Disconnect the spark plug lead wire. S Removethe spoolby firmlypulling onthe
tap button.
S Clean entire surface of hub and spool. S Replacewithapre-woundspool,or cuttwo
lengths of12-1/2feetof.080”(2mm)diam­eterWeedEaterbrandline.Never usewire, rope,string,etc.,whichcanbreakoffand become a dangerous missile.
S Insertends oflineabout1/2inch(1cm)into
the small hole inside spool.
