I. INTRODUCTION
The Certified Container Kit provides the LC and LC/MS user the ability
to get reliable results unlike generic or other brands of containers.
These LC containers are (empty) bottles in 250 mL and 1 L sizes. They
are uniquely processed and treated, much like the highly-regarded
Waters low TOC vials.
At <15 ppb TOC, the container is free from any potential organic
contaminants which could result in chromatography ghost peaks.
Just as important as the type and purity of the glass, in addition to
the solvents and mobile phases used, the cleanliness of containers
is paramount for increasing the accuracy of your analytical
measurement. Certified Containers provide Waters instrument users
reliable results unlike generic or other brands of media containers.
These are for Waters, by Waters.
The containers can be used on any Waters LC system, including, but
not limited to UPLC®, LC/UV and LC/MS. These ultra-clean bottles are
Type 1, Class A Borosilicate glass that conform to ASTM E-438 and
meet U.S. Pharmacopoeia specifications for Type 1 Borosilicate Glass.
The Certified Container Kit (p/n 186007088) contains 4 certified
1 L bottles, 3 certified 500 mL bottles with LC caps in standard sizes.
The Low Volume Kit (p/n 186007278) contains 5 certified 250 mL
clear bottles, 1 certified 500 mL clear bottle, and a clean container
cap kit. Each container is uniquely processed, treated, and sealed in a
Mylar bag to prevent particulate contamination during transportation
and storage post cleaning. Mylar was chosen for the bag material as
it does not release phthalates. Phthalates are commonly found in
plasticizers using in plastic bag manufacturing which can be released
during storage with detrimental effects on LC and LC/MS systems. Your
Certified Container Kit has come with a Certificate of Analysis (COA)
indicating it’s Total Organic Carbon (TOC) level when delivered to you.

II. THE PURPOSE OF CERTIFIED CONTAINERS
Certified containers provide Waters instrument users reliable results
unlike generic or other brands of media containers. The containers can
be used on any LC system, including, but not limited to UPLC, LC/UV
and LC/MS. Our unique processing and treatment prevents extraneous
peaks and baseline noise stemming from high TOC, thereby yielding the
cleanest and highest quality reservoir containers in the industry. These
containers provide analytical laboratories time saving solutions that
are easy to use and integrated into work flows ultimately meeting their
needs to simplify operations and increase productivity.
Features:
Certified —Low TOC (<15 ppb)
Certificate of Analysis
Validated Cleaning Process
Waters Branded
Individually Bagged and Boxed
III. HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR CERTIFIED CONTAINER
Be sure to use plugs included in the kit to plug all unused solvent
line holes in the cap liner to maintain cleanliness.
Caution: Do not wash certified containers. Designate one solvent or solvent mix for
one container. The Certified Containers will experience varying use conditions while in
service. During this time, if there is an increase in baseline then it is advised to replace
the Certified Containers with new stock. If baseline increase is not prominent, then it is
advised to use the Certified Containers for 4 to 6 months.
IV. SOLVENT CONSIDERATIONS
Solvent quality will have a significant impact on your performance
and results. Please follow the recommendations listed below for best
results. A more detailed review of these recommendations can be
found in Controlling Contamination in UltraPerformance LC®/MS and
HPLC/MS Systems 715001307, Rev. F at www.waters.com.
Use clean, particle-free solvents
Use ultrapure water
Prevent microbial growth
Degas all solvents
Use miscible solvents
Your sealed Certified Containers have been processed to contain
less than 15 ppb TOC upon receipt. You may notice that the familiar
polypropylene pour ring is absent from these containers. Based
on our deep and wide knowledge of our customer’s work flows,
Waters knows that pour rings can be one of the major sources of
contamination during the use and care of these containers. They have
been removed to give you the best possible product.
You can be confident in the starting point of your bottle. T he quality
of your solvents can impact the TOC level. Take care in choosing
quality solvents to minimize added contamination as described in the
section above. The kit comes with color coded caps which can aid in
segregating solvent types to a particular color code.
It is not necessary to pre-rinse your bottle with solvent but this
behavior will not hinder cleanliness. DO NOT pre-rinse your
Certified Container with solvent. This behavior will not enhance
cleanliness. Just fill the bottle with your designated solvent.
Each bottle contains an enhanced writing square to include your
important solvent information. We recommend you use only one
solvent type for the life of each bottle.
V. STORAGE AND STABILITY
The Certified Containers have been processed, treated, tested, and
sealed to maintain cleanliness. They are stable indefinitely before
opening. Once opened the containers should be used immediately to
avoid degradation and contamination which could compromise the
benefits of the product.
VI. SUMMARY
The glass processing, conditions of bottling and sterilization
processes used by your glass manufacturer could mean the difference
in your analysis and product stability due to ion leaching and pH
changes. Waters Certified containers provided to Waters instrument
users reliable results.
At <15 ppb, the container is free from any potential contaminants
which could result in chromatography ghost peaks.
Certified Containers are will help in your analysis and make your work
easier. Download the LCGC article RP1795EN00 and see how TOC
levels can impact your chromatography, and/or go online and buy the
new kit.
