Unpacking the Printer 900
1. With the shipping carton right side up, open the car-
ton’s lid and remove its conten ts. You should have the
components shown in Figure 2 on the next page.
Note: Save all pa cking mate rial in cas e you ever ha ve to
ship the Printer 900 or move it to another location.

2. Place the printer on a solid desk or table top. When
choosing a location for the printer, avoid areas with
•direct sunli ght or object s that radiat e heat
•excessive moisture
•excessive dust
•devices that ca use excess ive voltag e fluctu ations
or electrica l noise such as air condi tioners, fa ns,
electric motor s or high freq uency secur ity devices.
3. Lift up th e ribbon cover and remove the cardboa rd
spacer that protects the print head during shipment.
Save the spacer with the ot her packing ma terial.

Setting the Internal DIP Switches
A set of four DIP switches is loca ted under the paper
holder on the bo ttom of your Pr inter 900. Make sure that
these switches are s et as indica ted below before
connecting a nd operat ing the pri nter. The printer will not
operate properly if the switches are not set correctly.

CAUTION: Always disconnect the power before changing
the DIP switch settings.
Refer to the table be low for the p roper DIP switch
settings. If you are not sure of which sett ings to use, re fer
to the reference manual for your termina l or comput er’s
application program.

Installing the Printer 900
CAUTION: Unpl ug the term inal’s power pack before connecting the Print er 900 to the term inal.
Before installing the Printer 900, you must have the
correct printer interface cable. The Accessories Section,
located on the la st page of this in stallati on guide, list s the
interface cable par t numbers for dif ferent VeriFone
termin als.

1. Connect the 3-pin plug from the printer power supply to
the power connector on the right side of the Printer
900 rear panel.
2. Plug th e Prin ter 900 power pa ck into an indo or,
grounded AC outlet. The printer will now be turned on
and will run through a power-up routine. Do not install
or operate the Printer 900 outdoors.
3. Making sure that th e arrow on the pr inter in terface ca-
ble connector is up, careful ly plug the 8- pin mini- DIN
connector into the com municat ions p or t on the l eft
side of the Printer 900 rear panel.
4. Plug the other end of the cable into your terminal’s
RS-232 8-pi n port.
5. Plug in the terminal’s power pack

Cartridge
1. Remove the ribbon cover by pressing the front tab and
lifting the cover up.
2. If you ar e repl acing an old ri bbon, pul l up o n the lift t ab
on the right side of the cartridge (see Figure 6), remove
the cartridge and discard it.
3. Remove the new ribb on
car tridge fr om its pro tective packaging and inser t it, left sid e first, in to
the printer. Be sure the
round knob is facing up
and the ribbon fabric fits
between the print head
and the ri bbon gu ide.
4. Press the right side of
the ribbon cartridge into
place (Figure 7). If it
does not fit ea sily, lift
the car tri dge out and tr y
again. Do not force the
ribbon car tr idge into pl ace.
5. Turn the smal l
knob on the
car tridge cl ockwise to remove any
slack.
6. Insert the two
tabs on the
rear of the ribbon cover into
the slots on
the printer.
7. P ress the fr ont
of the cover
down and snap it into place.

The Print er 900 a ccep ts paper that is 76mm w ide. There
are three different types of roll paper available from
VeriFone. These are listed in the Acces sor ies Se ction on
page 11.
Note: For best results, be sure the leading edge of the
paper roll is cut cleanly rather than torn before feeding it
into the printer . This is par ticularl y importa nt when ins erting multiple-part paper.
1. Remove the roll cover by pressing the tabs on both
sides of the pape r cover and lifting th e cover up.
2. Hold th e paper ro ll at the fro nt of the pape r cavity, with
the paper rol l facing you, unro lling f rom the bottom.
Slowly move the paper rol l down and backwards, in to
the cavity, until the paper support arms snap into the
paper roll core.
3. To engage the auto feed mechanism , take the end of
the paper roll and gently guide the paper end into the
paper feed path . The paper feed path is on the b ase
of the pape r cavity in fr ont of t he pape r roll. The paper
feed path is marked with an arrow. As soon as the
sensor detects the paper, the printer will automatically
feed and advance the paper.
4. Replace the roll cover onto the printer, sliding the front
edge of the cover behind the tear bar. Make sure that
the paper extends thro ugh the slot on top of the
printer, and then snap th e roll cover into pl ace.
CAUTION: If you must remove the paper roll, do not pull
the paper out fr om the back of the print er. This c ould
damage the fe ed mechan ism. Inste ad, cut or te ar the paper from the rear of the printer. Use the paper feed button to remove the st ub remainin g in the feed mechan ism.

Cleaning
1. Disconnect the power cord at the rear of the printer.
2. Hold down th e paper feed button and plu g the power
cord back into the pr inter. Release the feed button when
printing begins. The printer will stop automatically after
printing 100 li nes of the U.S. character set.
CAUTION: If you must remove the paper roll, do not pull
the paper out fro m the back of th e printer. This could
damage the feed mechanism. Instead, cut or tear the paper from the r ear of the pri nter. Us e the paper feed button to remove the st ub remainin g in the feed mechan ism.
CAUTION: Never use thinner, trichloroethylene, or ketone based solv ents to clea n the printer as they may de teriorate plastic parts.
1. Remove dirt using a clean cloth dampened with water
and mild soap. Remove stubborn stains with alcoho l or
benzine.
2. If necessary use a small vacuum cleaner to remove pa-
per par tic les an d dust f rom t he ins ide of the pr inte r.
