INTRODUCTION
Thank you for choosing the Vello
ShutterBoss. This device is more than just
a remote shutter release. It features many
timer functions: self-timer, interval timer,
long exposure timer, as well as controls
for the number of continuous shutter trips.
Powered by two AAA batteries, it can take
approximately two months of continuous
shots with a delay of 5 minutes between
exposures and an exposure length of 4´56˝.
You can set the timer delays, exposure times,
and intervals up to 99 hours, 59 minutes, 59
seconds in one second increments. You can
select anywhere from 1 to 399 continuous
shots, or set the device to take an unlimited
number of photos.
The LCD screen has a backlit function for
low-light conditions.
The Vello ShutterBoss is great for timelapse recording of blooming flowers,
astrophotography, etc.
We have added two new features in Ver. II:
1. POWER OFF option:
This feature gives the ability to power the
device o to conserve battery life.
2. RESET option:
This feature allows the ShutterBoss to be
reset to the default factory settings, so
that each setting doesn’t need to be reset
individually.

SAFETY WARNINGS
• There are no user-serviceable parts inside
the device. Do not attempt to disassemble
or perform any unauthorized modification.
• Do not operate the ShutterBoss in the
presence of flammable gas or vapors.
• Do not handle with wet hands or immerse
in or expose to water or rain. Failure to
observe this precaution could result in fire
or electric shock.
• Keep out of the reach of children. This
device contains small parts which may
pose a choking hazard.
• Observe caution when handling batteries.
Batteries may leak or explode if
improperly handled. Use only the batteries
listed in this manual. Make certain to align
batteries with correct polarity.
• Batteries are prone to leakage when
fully discharged. To avoid damage to the
product, be sure to remove the batteries
when leaving the product unattended for
prolonged periods or when no charge
remains.

• Do not use or leave the device in
conditions of extreme heat, severe cold,
or high humidity.
• Turn o the camera’s power before
inserting or removing the remote cord.
• Dispose used batteries, packaging, and old
devices in accordance with appropriate
local environmental regulations.

CONNECT TO THE CAMERA POWER/RESET INSTRUCTIONS
The ShutterBoss comes in a variety of
models that are compatible with dierent
cameras. The only dierence in ShutterBoss
models is the connector on the end of the
cable. Your ShutterBoss and camera may look
dierent from those pictured in this guide.
1: Make certain the camera is turned OFF.
2: Make certain the TIMER ACTIVE and
RELEASE indicators are not displayed on
the ShutterBoss.
3: Move the camera’s remote cord socket
cover to expose the remote cord jack
and connect the ShutterBoss. (Press the
shutter release button on the ShutterBoss
only after you have turned on the camera.)
Look for this symbol.
Many camera manufacturers
use it to indicate the jack for
connecting remote devices.

• Press and hold TIMER START/STOP for
approximately 3 seconds to power the
Shutterboss timer on or o.
• Simultaneously press LOCK and TIMER
START/STOP to clear the current timer
information.
RESET ON/OFF
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
With the ShutterBoss you can release your
camera’s shutter manually or by using the
internal timer. Every camera handles remote
switches dierently. Be sure to follow the
instructions on using remote switches in your
camera’s manual as well as the steps in this
guide. Do not attempt to change any timer
settings during exposures or during delay or
interval countdowns.
Manual Release
The ShutterBoss can be used manually even
when there are no batteries in the device.
The display panel will be o, and no beep
will sound.
Timed Release
The ShutterBoss allows you to select any
combination of the following:
• Delay (time before the shutter is tripped)
• Exposure time (or you can set this on the
camera)
• Interval (the amount of time between a
sequence of shots)
• The number of shots to take in sequence.
You can even set the ShutterBoss to take
photos until you tell it to stop.

MANUAL RELEASE
The ShutterBoss can be used manually
even when there are no batteries in the
device. The display panel will be o, and no
beep will sound. To use the ShutterBoss
manually:
1. After connecting the ShutterBoss
to your camera, adjust your camera
settings. Choose your exposure
mode, shutter speed, focus mode, and
shooting mode.
2. Press the shutter release button halfway
on the ShutterBoss. The camera will focus
(if set to Auto Focus).
3. Press full on the shutter release button to
take the photo. Release the button to end
shooting.
The shutter release button can also be used
to release the shutter while the timer is
active. The shutter will release, and the timer
will continue its countdown.
To lock the pressed shutter button, slide
the shutter release button forward. If your
camera is set to Bulb mode, the shutter will
stay open until you slide the locked shutter
button back and release it.

SELF-TIMER DELAYED RELEASE
The self-timer on your camera is limited in
the choices you have for setting the delay.
With the ShutterBoss you can select a
self-timed delay from 1 second to 99 hours
59 minutes 59 seconds in one second
increments.
1. After connecting the ShutterBoss to
your camera, adjust your camera settings.
Choose your exposure mode, shutter
speed, focus mode, and shooting mode.
Do not set the camera’s self-timer.
2. Make certain that the controls on the
ShutterBoss are not locked. If you see the
displayed, press the /Lock button
until the lock icon disappears.
3. Use the arrow button to set the cursor
beneath SELF. Press the left and right
arrows to move the cursor into place.
4. Press the SET button to change the
Self-Timer setting. Use the left and right
arrows to move between hours, minutes,
and seconds. Use the up and down arrows
to change the time values.
5. Press SET again to accept your selection.
6. Press TIMER START/STOP to begin timer.

TIMED EXPOSURE LENGTH
The ShutterBoss can control shutter speeds
that are much longer than your camera
can. With the ShutterBoss you can select
shutter speeds from 1 second to 99 hours
59 minutes 59 seconds in one second
increments. The confirmation LED will blink
every second during a long exposure.
1. After connecting the ShutterBoss to
your camera, adjust your camera settings.
Choose your focus mode. Set the
exposure mode to B (bulb).
2. Make certain that the controls on the
ShutterBoss are not locked. If you see the
displayed, press the /Lock button
until the lock icon disappears.
3. Use the arrow button to set the cursor
beneath LONG. Press the left and right
arrows to move the cursor into place.
4. Press the SET button to change the
Exposure Length setting. Use the left and
right arrows to move between hours,
minutes, and seconds. Use the up and
down arrows to change the time values.
5. Press SET again to accept your selection.
6. Press TIMER START/STOP to begin timer.

TIMED INTERVALS
The ShutterBoss allows you to control the
amount of time between a series of shots.
Choose an interval that is longer than your
exposure time, from 1 second to 99 hours
59 minutes 59 seconds. If using a flash, be
sure to set an interval that is longer than
your flash recycle time.
1. After connecting the ShutterBoss to
your camera, adjust your camera settings.
Choose your focus mode and set your
exposure.
2. Make certain that the controls on the
ShutterBoss are not locked. If you see the
displayed, press the /Lock button
until the lock icon disappears.
3. Use the arrow button to set the cursor
beneath INTV. Press the left and right
arrows to move the cursor into place.
4. Press the SET button to change the
Interval setting. Use the left and right arrows
to move between hours, minutes, and
seconds. Use the up and down arrows to
change the time values.
5. Press SET again to accept your selection.
6. Press TIMER START/STOP to begin timer.

NUMBER OF SHOTS
The ShutterBoss allows you to control
the number of shots taken in a sequence.
You can set the ShutterBoss to trigger the
camera shutter up to 399 times. Or you can
set it to take shots until you tell it to stop.
By default there will be a one second interval
between shots (see the previous page).
1. After connecting the ShutterBoss to
your camera, adjust your camera settings.
Choose your focus mode and set your
exposure.
2. Make certain that the controls on the
ShutterBoss are not locked. If you see the
displayed, press the /Lock button
until the lock icon disappears.
3. Use the arrow button to set the cursor
beneath No. Press the left and right
arrows to move the cursor into place.
4. Press the SET button to change the
number of shots. Use the up and down
arrows to change the value. To set the
number of shots to infinite, select “––,”
which is beyond 399 (or below 1).
5. Press SET again to accept your selection.
6. Press TIMER START/STOP to begin timer.

AUDIBLE BEEP
The ShutterBoss will give you an audible beep
for the last three seconds of a countdown
delay or interval. It will also beep to confirm
your settings. You can turn o the audible
beep.
1. Make certain that the controls on the
ShutterBoss are not locked. If you see the
displayed, press the /Lock button
until the lock icon disappears.
2. Use the arrow button to set the cursor
beneath BEEP. Press the left and
right arrows to move the cursor into
place.
3. Press the SET button to change the
Audible Beep setting. Use the up and down
arrows to turn the beep ON or OFF.
4. Press SET again to accept your selection.

BACKLIGHT/LOCK BUTTON
Press the /Lock button briefly to activate
the backlight on the display. The backlight will
remain lit for about 6 seconds. Pressing the
button again during backlighting will extend
the backlighting for another 6 seconds.
To lock all the controls, except the shutter
release button, press and hold the /
Lock button until the icon appears in
the display. To unlock, press and hold the
Backlight/Lock button until the icon
disappears.

ACTIVITY INDICATORS
TIMER ACTIVE
When TIMER ACTIVE is blinking, it means
the timer is active. Do not attempt to change
any settings while TIMER ACTIVE is blinking.
Press Timer Start/Stop if you wish to cancel
the timer action.
SET
When SET is blinking, it means that you
are engaged in changing a setting. Note the
cursor; it will confirm which parameter is
active. Press Set to confirm your setting.
RELEASE
When RELEASE is blinking, it means that
the shutter is open. If TIMER ACTIVE is also
blinking, the timer has released the shutter.
Press Timer Start/Stop if you wish to cancel
the timer action. If TIMER ACTIVE is not
also blinking, the shutter has been released
manually. A manual release can be cancelled
by releasing the shutter release button,
sliding it back from its locked position if
necessary.

Activity Indicators
CHANGING THE BATTERIES
The low battery indicator will blink when
battery power is low. To change batteries:
1: Check that the TIMER ACTIVE and
RELEASE buttons are not active.
2: Turn o the camera and disconnect the
ShutterBoss.
3: Slide open the battery chamber cover on
the back of the ShutterBoss.
4: Remove the batteries.
5: Wait for the display to go out and install
two fresh 1.5V AAA alkaline batteries.

CARE OF THE SHUTTERBOSS
Protect the ShutterBoss
Do not drop the ShutterBoss. The device
may malfunction if subjected to a strong
shock or vibration.
Keep Dry
The ShutterBoss is not waterproof. Avoid
getting the device wet. Do not expose to
high humidity.
Avoid Sudden Temperature Changes
Sudden changes in temperature, such as
entering or leaving a warm building on a
cold day, can cause damaging condensation
inside the device. Protect the ShutterBoss
by placing it inside a carrying case or a
sealed plastic bag and allowing it to adjust to
temperature changes gradually.
Avoid Magnetic Fields
Strong static charges or electromagnetic
fields generated by equipment such as radio
transmitters can interfere with the device.
A strong external static charge can cause
unusual characters to display on the screen
or may cause the device to malfunction.
In such a situation, turn o the camera,
disconnect the ShutterBoss, remove the
batteries, and then replace them a few
seconds after the display goes out.

Liquid Crystal Displays
The display panel is a liquid crystal display. At
very low temperatures, the display response
my become slower. And at temperatures
higher than 60°C (140°F), the display may
darken. In either case, the display will return
to normal at room temperature.

This VELLO product is warranted to the original purchaser to be free from defects in materials and workmanship under normal consumer use for a period of one (1) year from the
