1.3Working safely with your laser printer
Notes on your safety and operating safety
Working improp erly with the printer can result in health hazards, electric
shocks and even fires. Before you unpack the laser printer, you should
make yourself familiar with thi s inf ormation on your saf ety and operating
safety.

➜Make sure that the powe r cable is correctl y plugged into the sock et

Introduction
Laser safety
This printer is equipped with a laser. I f the printer is used in accor dance
with the instructions in this User’s Manual, the laser presents no danger.
The radiation emi tted is compl etely absor bed and attenuated by the case.
The laser radiation cannot escape at any time during the printing
procedure.
This laser printer is categori zed as a Class 1 printer. Thi s classification
means that the printer does not produce any hazardous laser radiation.
Internal laser radiation
Average radia ti on output:
0.6mW at the laser aperture of the print head unit.
Wavelength: 770-810 nm
This device works wit h a laser diode of class 3b with inv isible laser
radiation. The laser diode and the pol ygon m ir ror for sampling are
integrated in the print head unit.
The print head uni t is NOT AN ITEM TO BE MAINTAINED O N SITE. You
should ther efor e not open it under any circumstances.

Using the printer in a manner other than as in dicated in this manual may

Place of installation
The printer should be set up in a place which is:

Gwell clear of highly flammable items, e.g. curtains,
Gclear of objects which might obstruct the printer’s ventilation slits,
Gnear to an easily accessible power socket.
The printer mus t be posi tioned such that it can not be adversely affected
by the following:

Gexhaust-air from heati ng, ventilation or a ir -conditioning systems.
Storage of consumables and accessories
Printing consumables and accessories should be kept:
Gsealed in their original packagings,
Gprotec ted against direct sunlight or heat,
Gprotected against fluorescent light,
Gin a cool, dry and dust-free place,
Gout of reach of children.
CAUTION
Toner poses a health hazard!
Toner is harmful if swallowed.

➜Never switch off the printer while a print job is in progress, the printer
is receiving dat a from the computer (f lashing “Stand-by“ lamp on
control panel) or the printer is being reset.
➜Switch the power switch to "I" (ON)
in order to activate the printer.

"0" (OFF) in order to deactivate the

Saving energy is sensible!
When the printer has been inactive for a certain length of time, it
automatically swi tches to the POWER SAVE mode. This time period
can be adjusted via the printer tools, see page 5-9.
When the printer receives a new print job while in POWER SAVE
mode, it automatically switches to the warm-up phase.

When installing the printer driver using “Start – Settings – Printer – Add
Printer“ please note the following point s:
GThe dialogue box for instal li ng options is not displayed. Adjust the
additional options after you have completed the ins tal lation in the
printer driver.
GThe Status Monitor will not be installed.
GThe uninstaller ut ili ty wi ll n ot be i nstal led. To us e thi s progr am lat er for
deinstallation, start the file “zuninst.exe“ on the CD supplied wit h the

Creating a custom paper format
You can create your own personally designed paper size.
Click on [EDIT CUSTOM...]

The “Custom paper“ dialogue box appears.
To create a new paper size, click on [ADD].

The boxes underneath are then activated.
Enter a name for the new paper form at.
The dialogue box disappears. The newly cr eated format is now
displayed at the end of the “Paper size“ dropdown list and can be
selected when re quired.

Would you like to delete a custom format?
In the “Custom paper“ dialogue box, mark the paper si ze you would
like to delete. Then click on “Delete“. Confirm w it h [OK].

Adjusting the print-out to fit the paper
Use the “Fit to paper “ funct ion to f it you r document to a ce rtain paper si ze
when it is printed. Your document will be automatically enlarged or
reduced so that it will fi t on the paper size you have se lected.
The “Fi t to paper“ funct ion can not be used at the same tim e as th e “N-Up“
or "All raster" functions.
Activate the checkbox “Fit to paper“.

Defining the type of paper/media
Specifying the “Media type“ allows you to define the type of pap er on
which you wish to print:
The print -out of a do cument may b e enl arged or reduce d by mea ns of the
“Scaling“ fun c tion.
The “Scaling“ function cannot be used at the sam e ti m e as the “N-up“ or “All ras te r“ functions.
➜In the “Scaling“ box, enter the value – in per cent (%) – by which the
document is to be enlarged or reduced (max. reduction: 50%; ma x.
enlargement : 200% ).

Specifying the numbe r of copies
In the “Copies“ box, specify t he number of copies that you wis h to print out.
You may enter any value between 1 and 999.
Switching on/off the printer’s sorting function
Switch on the “Collate at printer“ function i n order to sort your print-outs
automatically.
This function i s only available when your printer is fitt ed wit h a memor y
capacity of at least 64 MB.

You may adjust the pr int able area in order to, for example, fit docum ent
pages to preprinted forms. The printable area may be adjust ed by up to
10 points (approx. 4 mm) horizontally and vertically.

Switching Toner Save funct ion on and of f
You can reduce your pr inting costs with th e “Tone r Save“ feature.
Text and graphi cs are printed in grey in Tone r Save mode. The purpose
of this is to use as little toner as possible. You can save on pri nti ng costs
by printing rough drafts and other preliminary materials in Toner Save
mode.
➜Select “ON“ to pri nt your docum ents using a mini m al amount of toner.
➜Select “OFF“ to print your document s with the normal amount of to ner.
Optimizing the prin t quality of text and graphics
Use the this func tion t o smoot h the edges of text an d gra phics and he nce
optimize the print quality.
➜Select “OFF“ to achieve an optimum print qualit y for photos (ras ter
graphics).
➜“MEDIUM“ is the default setting and is adequate for most text and
graphics.
➜Select “LIGHT“ to smooth the edges of te xt an d graphic s by means of
a small n umber of dot s. In t he print -out th is produce s a soft er transi tion
at the edges.
➜Select “DARK“ to sm ooth the edges of text and graphics by means of
a large number of dots. In the print-out this produces a harder
transition at the edges.
Specifying the toner density
The amount of toner used is specified by means of the “Toner density“
function.
✎
High toner density = high toner consumption!
Increasi ng the toner density prod uces a darker print-o ut but increases
the consumpti on of toner.
Optimizing data exchange with the printer (All raster)
Use the “All raster“ fun ction to determi ne the format i n which graphics and
font data will be loaded into the printer.

The “All raste r“ function cannot be used at the same time as the “N-up“, “Scaling“, “Fit to paper“ and “Font“ functions.
➜Select “ON“ to send both graphics and font data to t he printe r as raster
graphics. This makes it possibl e for the print ed document to agree as
closely as poss ible with the appearance on the screen. Print ing may
be slower with this function activated.
Printer-resident fonts cannot be used.
➜Select “OFF“ to send your document to the pri nter in the conve ntiona l
transmission form.
Printer-resident fonts may be used.
Specifying the resol ution
The print quality is defined by means of the “Resolution“ function.
➜Select “300×300 dpi“ for normal print-outs, e.g. for text and gr aphics
with thick line eleme nts.

➜Select “600×600 dpi“ for print-outs which require a high print qua li ty,
e.g. for text and graphics with fine line elements.
➜Select “1200×600 dpi“ for print-outs which re quire a very high print
quality, e.g. for high-resolution graphics.
Activating the use of pr int er-resident TrueType fonts
The “Font“ function specifies whet her, in the case of identical TrueType
fonts in document and printer, the printer-resident fonts are to be used.
➜Activate the “Use prin ter TrueType font“ checkbox in order t o use the
printer’s TrueType fonts. This can shorten the printing time.
➜Deactivate the “Use printer TrueType font“ checkbox in order to
download the comput er’s TrueType fonts.

Switching on/off t he Powe r Save m ode
In order to save energy, the printer autom atically switc hes to the Power
Save mode a fter a cert ain period of inact ivi ty. When t he pri nter receiv es a
new command or the control button is presse d whil e in t his mode, the
printer automatically switches to the warm-up phase.
➜Select “On“ and enter a time period aft er whi ch the printer should
switch to the Power Save mode.
➜Select “Off“ to deactivate the Power Save mode function.
Switching on/off the automatic continuation function
A print job is interr upted if the printe r signals a format error or mem ory
overflow. The “Auto con tinue“ function enabl es you to dete rmine whet her
the print job shoul d continue automatic ally after a certain ti me has elapsed
despite the presence of an error message .

Specifying fast or norma l pri nting modes
You can shorten the time bef ore the first page of a job is pr int ed.
➜Select “Fast print“ to maintain the fus ing unit at a high temperat ure.
This minimizes the time before the first page is printed.
➜Select “Normal print“ to allow the fusing unit to cool down when
printing is not in progress. I n order to print the first pag e of a print job,
the fusing unit must first warm up again and so more time is required
for the first page.

Specifying the input /output timeout
An input/output timeout occurs when the printer canno t det ect the end
data code of a print jo b sent from the computer. The pri nt job is
automatica ll y cancelled in the case of an input/output t imeout.
➜Enter the number of seconds within which the prin ter m ust detect the
end of a print job.
Switching on/off the paper format error detection
You can specify whether the printer shoul d respond when the paper fed
into the machine is different to the one set i n the printer driver .
➜Select “On“ to detect paper format errors.
➜Select “Off“ to ignore paper format errors.
Activating page protection
With page prot ection activ ated, the printer reserves extra memory space
and waits until the data for a page has been complet ely loaded into the
printer memory. Only then does the printing process begin.
➜Select “Auto“ to enable the pri nter to check each page of a print job in
advance and activate page protection if necessary.
➜Select “On“ to enable the printer to always reser ve sufficient memory
so that the data for one page can be compl etel y loaded. This funct ion
requires min. 6 MB RAM for resol ution of 600 x 600 dpi.

CounterDescription
TotalThis indicates the total number of pages printed by the printer.
This counter can only be reset by a customer service engineer.
Tray 1This indicates how many pages have been fed frompaper feed
tray 1.
Tray 2This indicates how many pages have been fed from paper feed
tray 2.
Manual feed unitThis indicates how many pages have been fed via the manual
paper feed unit.
DrumThis indicates how many pages have been with the current
image transfer roller.
This counter should be reset after changing the image transfer
roller.
TonerThis indicates how many pages have been printed with the
current toner cartridge.

Resetting a counter
This resets the counter status to zero.
The “total counter“ status can only be reset by a customer service

Switching Toner Save funct ion on and of f
You can reduce your pr inting costs with th e “Tone r Save“ feature.
Text and graphi cs are printed in grey in Tone r Save mode. The purpose
of this is to use as little toner as possible. You can save on pri nti ng costs
by printing rough drafts and other preliminary materials in Toner Save
mode.
➜Select “ON“ to pri nt your docum ents using a mini m al amount of toner.
➜Select “OFF“ to print your document s with the normal amount of to ner.
Specifying the resol ution
The print qualit y is defined by means of the “Resolution“ function.
➜Select “300dpi“ for normal print-outs, e.g. for text and graphics with
thick line elements.
➜Select “600dpi“ for pri nt-outs which r equire a hi gh print qua lity, e.g. for
text and graphics with fine line elements.
Optimizing the prin t quality of text and graphics
Use this function to smooth the edges of text and graphics and henc e
optimize the print quality.
➜Select “OFF“ to achieve an optimum print qualit y for photos (ras ter
graphics).
➜“MEDIUM“ is the default setting and is adequate for most text and
graphics.
➜Select “LIGHT“ to smooth the edges of te xt an d graphic s by means of
a small n umber of dot s. In t he print -out th is produce s a soft er transi tion
at the edges.
➜Select “DARK“ to sm ooth the edges of text and graphics by means of
a large number of dots. In the print-out this produces a harder
transition at the edges.

Switching on/off t h e Pow er Save m ode
In order to save energy, the printer autom atically switc hes to the Power
Save mode after a certain period of inactivi ty. When the printer receiv es a
new command or the control button is presse d whil e in t his mode, the
printer automatically switches to the warm-up phase.
➜Select “ON“ and enter a time per iod after which the printer should
switch to the Power Save mode.
➜Select “OFF“ to deactivate the Power Save mode function.
Switching on/off the paper format error detection
You can specify whether the printer shoul d respond when the paper fed
into the machine is different to the one set i n the printer driver .
➜Select “ON“ to detect paper format errors.
➜Select “OFF“ to ignore paper format errors.
Activating page protection
With page prot ection activ ated, the printer reserves extra memory space
and waits until the data for a page has been complet ely loaded into the
printer memory. Only then does the printing process begin.
➜Select “AUTO“ to enable the printer to check each page of a pr int job
in advance and activate page protection if necessary.
➜Select “ON“ to enable the prin ter to always res erve suff icie nt memory
so that the data for one page can be compl etel y loaded. This funct ion
requires min. 6 MB RAM for resol ution of 600 x 600 dpi.

A print job is interr upted if the printe r signals a format error or mem ory
overflow. The “Auto con tinue“ function enabl es you to dete rmine whet her
the print job shoul d continue automatic ally after a certain ti me has elapsed
despite the presence of an error message .
➜Select “ON“ and enter a ti m e period after which the a print j ob should
be automatically continued des pit e the error.
➜Select “OFF“ to suppress the automatic continuation function.
Specifying the input /output timeout
An input/output timeout occurs when the printer cannot detect the end
data code of a print job sent from the computer. The print job is
automatica ll y cancelled in the case of an input/output ti m eout.
➜Enter the number of seconds within which t he printer must detect the
end of a print job.

What should I watch out for when loading paper ?
To avoid pape r misf eeds in th e laser print er, please o bser ve the foll owing
points:
GDo not use any paper with the following features:
❍Paper that has already been used in a thermal or ink-jet printer.
❍Creased or wavy paper.
❍Paper with a surface that is too smooth, too rough or irregular.
❍Specially coat ed paper such as carbon paper or paper with an
adhesive surface.
❍Paper that is not cut at right-angles.
❍Paper that is held together by glue, adhesive or clips.
❍Paper with labels that detach easily.
❍Warped or curled-up postcards.

GPlease note that the stac k of paper in the paper tray should not excee d
the "ma x ." mark.
What should I watch out for when loading envel opes?
To avoid envelop e misfeeds in the laser printer, please observe the
following points:
GDo not use self-adhesive envelopes or those with a tear-off strip,
closures or a window.
GPlace the env elopes in t he tray wi th the flap do wn and facing to the lef t.
GMake sure that the flaps are nea tly folded back.
