displayed indicates how much device memory is free, as follows:

To reset your CANVIO® HOME, press and hold the button for 2 seconds, until the
device indicator lights flash.
Insert a USB drive, or connect a USB cable (sold separately) to a printer.
Connect the Ethernet cable to your network router.
Connect a Kensington® security cable to lock your device to a desk or other object.
Connect the AC adapter to a working outlet.
If the amber light continues flashing, contact Toshiba support. See
“Service and support” on page 47.
A reset sets the device name and password back to the default
settings. It does not erase any data (photos, videos, music, etc.).
If you will not be using your CANVIO HOME device often, we recommend that you turn on the sleep mode setting to save power.

SET UP YOUR DEVICE
1Connect the AC adapter to the CANVIO HOME device and to a working electrical outlet.
2Connect the CANVIO HOME to your network router using the provided Ethernet cable. The device turns on automatically
and the indicator lights flash for a few minutes while the device initializes. Wait for the lights to stop flashing before you
go to the next procedure.
INSTALL THE SOFTWARE
You can use your CANVIO HOME without installing the software. See XX for instructions.
1On your computer, go to http://www.toshibastorage.com/canviohome and click the option to download the Canvio

Be sure to write down your password and store it in a safe place. If you forget or lose your password, a user on your network with
admin rights needs to reset the password for you. See “Change a user's password and grant the user administrator rights” on
page 33.
Install the software
5A short video plays describing your CANVIO HOME features. Close the window after the video has stopped playing.
6On the Log In screen, enter the username and password you just created.
(Optional) Check the box if you want the application to remember your username and password, so you do not need to
enter them each time you log in.
If you are using a public or shared computer, we recommend that you do not check the box.
As part of the CANVIO HOME installation process, you log in to the application for the first time (see step 6 in “Install the software” on
page 10). To use the application in the future, you need to log in as follows:
1Double-click the Canvio
(Windows), or in the Launchpad and the Applications folder in the Finder (Mac).
2If the fields are not already filled in, enter your username and password.
3(Optional) Check the box if you want the application to remember your username and password, so you do not need to
enter them each time you log in.

FIRST STEPS
Before you begin uploading and viewing files on your CANVIO HOME, we recommend that you do that following:
vUpdate the software to the latest version, if applicable. See “Service and support” on page 47.
vCreate rescue media. See “Create rescue media” on page 25.
vCreate a system backup of your computer. See “Perform a system backup (Windows)” on page 26 or “Perform a system
backup (Mac)” on page 27.
UPLOAD FILES AND PLAYLISTS
You can upload all the most commonly used music, video, photo, document, and other file types from your computer, tablet,
or other device to your CANVIO HOME. You can also upload music and photo playlists.
You have two options for uploading files and playlists using your CANVIO HOME:
vSelect and upload music, photo, video, playlist, and other files from your computer to a public folder. These files are
available to anyone with a CANVIO HOME who shares your network/domain.
vBack up files to your personal private share. These files remain private unless you give a specific person permission to
access a file.
To upload files from your computer, you first specify which types of files you want. The CANVIO HOME then searches your
computer for just the file types you specify.
vIf you specify music, video, or photo, or playlist files, the software searches for all supported file types in those
categories. These are as follows:

Although your CANVIO HOME recognizes and stores these file formats, you can only listen to or view a file or playlist on your
computer or other device if the file is in a format that the computer or device also supports. You may need to install a third-party
application or audio/video playback codec to access media or other files on your computer.
vIf you specify documents, you can select which supported document file types you want to search for.
vYou can also specify any file type that does not fall within the category of music, video, photo, or document.
Your CANVIO HOME does not upload files to the same folder structure you have on your computer or other device. Instead,
uploaded files are placed in the Public folder, in a subfolder based on file type: Music, Video, Photos, or Documents. If you want
to keep your folder structure for uploaded files, use Windows Explorer or the Finder to organize files on your CANVIO HOME. See
“Use Windows Explorer/Finder to preserve your folder structure for uploaded files” on page 46.
1From the main menu, click the File/Folder Upload icon.
2On the Upload/Backup screen, do one of the following:
vTo upload files for public sharing with anyone on the network: Select the first option.
vTo back up files to your private share: Select the second option, and then select the share from the list.
4Check the box next to each type of file you want to upload. Note the following:
vYou can check more than one box.
vIf you check the Documents box, enter the extension for each file type you want to upload (for example,.doc,.pdf,
or .html). Alternatively, click the arrow to the right of the field to display a list of all the document file types. Check
the box next to each document file type you want to upload.
vTo upload a file type that is not a music, video, photo, or document file, check the File Types box and enter the file
extension. The extension is the part of the file name that starts with a period and contains two to four letters—for
example, .fm, .dll, .exe.
5Click Select Folders.
6In the left panel of the Folder Selection screen, navigate to the folder containing all the subfolders and files you want to
upload. Click + next to any folder name to expand it.
7In the right panel of the Folder Selection screen, check the box next to any folder containing a file you want to upload.
Your CANVIO HOME uploads any file in that folder that matches the file type(s) you selected on the previous screen.
If you do not check any boxes, your CANVIO HOME uploads all files in the parent folder.
8Click Upload Once.
You can also set up a schedule for uploading files. See “Set up a schedule for uploading/backing up files” on page 16.
9When the upload process has finished, the Upload Result window. appears. Click OK.
Depending on the number of files you are uploading, it can take from several minutes to several hours for your files to fully
upload and be available for viewing/listening.
Set up a schedule for uploading/backing up files
If you plan to regularly upload or back up files to your CANVIO HOME, you can schedule future backups. You can set up
schedules both for public uploads and private share backups.
1Follow steps 1–6 in “Upload files and playlists” on page 13.
2After you check the box(es) for the folders containing the files you want to upload, click Schedule Upload.
3On the Schedule Settings screen, click the arrow to the right of the first field, and then click one of the following options:
vRun Once. Select this option to upload your files one time. This is the same as clicking Upload Once on the
Folder Selection screen.
vDaily.
vWeekly. If you select this option, click the arrow to the right of the first field, and click the day of the week that you
want your scheduled upload to occur.
vMonthly. If you select this option, click the arrow to the right of the first field, and click the day of the month that
you want your scheduled upload to occur.
4Do the following to set a time for your scheduled upload:
vClick + and - to set the hours and minutes.
vClick AM or PM to switch between the two options.
5Click Next.
6On the confirmation screen, click Confirm.
Edit or delete your upload/backup schedule
1From the main menu, click the File/Folder Upload icon.
2On the Upload/Backup screen, click Manage Existing Schedules and click Next.

3Select the type of upload/backup you want to modify: Upload, private share backup, or full system backup.
4Do one of the following:
vTo delete the scheduled upload/backup: Click Delete.
vTo edit the scheduled upload/backup: Click Edit and follow the steps in “Set up a schedule for uploading/backing
up files” on page 16 to create a new schedule.
VIEW AND LISTEN TO MUSIC, VIDEOS, PHOTOS, AND OTHER FILES
Listen to music
1From the main menu, click the Music icon.
2Do one of the following:
vTo listen to songs from an album, click Albums, and then click the album name. To listen to the entire album, click
. To listen to a certain song, double-click the song name.
vTo listen to songs by an artist, click Artists, and then click the artist name. To listen all songs by the artist, click
. To listen to a certain song, double-click the song name.
vTo choose songs individually, click Songs. To play all songs, click . To play a certain song, double-click the
song name.
3During song playback, a number of controls are available at the bottom of the screen. See “Use playback controls” on
page 19.
When the song you selected finishes playing, the next song in the list (depending on the album or artist you chose, or whether
you chose Songs), plays automatically. You can select options to repeat the current song, or to play songs in random order. See
“Use playback controls” on page 19.
4To return to the music selection screen from the music playback screen, click .
5After you return to the music selection screen, to exit the music player, click X in the upper-right corner.

4If you display more than one thumbnail, you can view the displayed thumbnails as a slideshow. During slideshow
playback, a number of controls are available at the bottom of the screen. See “Use playback controls” on page 19.
5To return to the photo selection screen from the slideshow playback screen, click .
6After you return to the photo selection screen, to exit the photo viewer, click X in the upper-right corner.

When you are listening to music or viewing a video or a photo/slideshow, playback controls appear both on the selection
screen and on the playback screen.

Create a playlist
1On any selection screen (music, videos, photos, or files) click to the right of Playlists on the lower-left side of the
screen.

Although you can click the icon to create a playlist from any selection screen, you can create playlists for music or photos only.
2Click the drop-down list and click Music or Photos to select the type of playlist you want to create.

You can also start creating a playlist from a song or photo itself. Right-click on the song or photo file name, and then click Add to new playlist. To complete the playlist, follow steps 4–7 above.
Play a playlist
You can play an entire playlist, or select songs or photos from within the playlist.

Delete an entire playlist or a song from a playlist

vTo delete an entire playlist, click to the far right of the playlist name.
vTo delete a file within the playlist, click the file name (hold down the Ctrl or Shift key on your keyboard to select
multiple files), and then click Delete, or click to the far right of a file name.
Deleting a file within a playlist removes the file from the playlist only. The file still appears in Music or Photos in the CANVIO
HOME software.
5Click Delete to confirm.
Access a file
You can use the Files feature to upload files for other users to download to their computers, or to download a file that another
user has uploaded.
1From the main menu, click the Files icon.
From the file selection screen, you can also choose to view any of the other file types (music, videos, or photos) by clicking the
option on the left side of the screen.
2To upload a file, click , browse to the file, and click Open. Your CANVIO HOME uploads the file to the appropriate
folder, depending on the file type (music, video, photo, document, or other).
After you upload a file, click the folder on the left side of the screen and click to see the file in the list.
vClick to open the download panel at the bottom of the screen.
vClick Public or a private share folder name, depending on the file location.
vContinue clicking folders until you locate the file.
vDrag and drop the file into the download panel.
vRepeat these steps to add other files to the download panel.
vAfter you have placed all the files you want, click Download. The file appears on your computer in the location
specified in the download settings. See “Change download and slideshow interval settings” on page 25.
Delete a file
You can delete any file from within its file type (music, video, or photo). You can delete a file of any type (including music,
videos, and photos) from within Files.
1On the main menu, click the icon for the type of file you want to delete. To click a file of any type, click the Files
icon.
2Navigate to the file you want to delete.
3(Optional) To delete multiple files on the screen, hold down the Ctrl or Shift key on your keyboard to select multiple
files.
4Right-click the file name(s) and click Delete.
5Click Delete to confirm.
Change download and slideshow interval settings
Two settings are available from all selection screens:
vDownload location. Enter or navigate to the folder where you want to save files you download.
vSliderShow Interval(s). Change the time interval for displaying photos in a slideshow.
BACK UP AND RESTORE YOUR SYSTEM
The CANVIO HOME software includes a SystemSave™ feature that allows you to protect your computer system and
information in the following ways:
vCreating rescue media on a USB thumb drive. You can use rescue media to boot up your computer and initiate a
full system restore from your CANVIO HOME device. Use rescue media after you have repaired or replaced defective
hardware or if you need to restore your computer to a previous state, such as before a recent software installation. The
full system restore uses your most recent full system backup.
vPerforming a system backup. Performing a complete system backup enables you to restore your operating system,
programs, system settings, and files in case of a system malfunction or failure.
You can also schedule backups and manage any backups you create.
Create rescue media
1Insert a blank USB thumb drive into a USB port on your computer.
2From the main menu, click the Full System Backup icon.
4Select the USB thumb drive you inserted into your computer.
5Click Continue.
6After the process of creating your rescue media has completed, a status window appears. Click OK.
Be sure to keep the rescue media in a safe place. Do not use the rescue media USB drive to copy other files.
Perform a system backup (Windows)
For system backup on Windows, your CANVIO HOME supports NTFS, FAT32, and the new GUID formats. Other system
formats are not supported or have not been tested.
If you have a drive with multiple partitions and one or more of the partitions are in an unsupported format, you cannot perform a
full system backup of the drive.
1From the main menu, click the Full System Backup icon.
2Select Complete PC Backup and click Continue.
3(Optional) To create a password for the backup, do the following:
vCheck the Create a password for the backup box.
vTo view the password while you are entering it, check the View Password box.
vEnter your password, and then enter it again to confirm.
The password can be up to 16 characters in length, and can include uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols.
5Click Continue.
6When the backup process has completed, a status window appears. Click OK.
You cannot back up files that are encrypted on your computer. If you try to back up files and they do not appear in your CANVIO
HOME, make sure you have file encryption turned off.
Computers running Mac OS® X use Apple Time Machine® to perform hourly backups for the preceding 24 hours, daily
backups for the preceding month, and weekly backups for all months before that.
When your CANVIO HOME becomes full, Time Machine deletes the oldest backups to create space.
Verify that the Mac is connected to the same local area (share) network (LAN) as the CANVIO HOME device, and that the
device is visible in the Chooser.
1From your computer’s Menu Bar or Dock, click the Time Machine icon. Alternatively, under System Preferences, click
Time Machine.
2Do the following on the login screen:
vConnect as: Select Registered User.
vName: Enter timemachineuser.
vPassword: Enter admin.
vClick Connect.
3Click Select Disk.
4Scroll to and click your CANVIO HOME in the list of drives.
5(Optional) To select specific files and folders for backup, do the following:
vClick Option.
vClick the files and folders you do not want to include in the backup.
If you perform the backup while your computer is running on battery power, check the box to ensure you do not lose any data or
tasks if battery life runs out during the backup.
6Click Backup Now.
Change Time Machine® backup settings
You can turn notifications on and off, and turn automatic backup on and off.
vTo receive notification when Time Machine deletes an old backup: Select Notify after old backups are deleted.
vTo turn off automatic backups: Select Off.
Restore your system from a backup (Windows)
You can restore your computer to the condition as of the last backup using SystemSave. Before restoring, repair or replace
defective hardware on your computer. During the restore process, your system will lose any data stored on your computer
after the last full system backup.
1You need to purchase a new, blank hard drive. Before purchase, make sure that the new drive has enough capacity to
hold all of the used capacity of the old hard drive.
During the restore process, the software checks the available capacity of the new drive. However, we recommend that you verify
the capacity before you begin the restore process.
2Make sure that your computer is turned off.
3Replace the hard drive in your computer with the new hard drive. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions.
4Turn on your computer, and use the system BIOS to specify USB as a bootable drive. Check your computer manual or
call your computer manufacturer’s technical support for instructions.
Toshiba technical support cannot provide instructions for specifying a USB as a bootable drive in your computer system BIOS.
6Connect both your computer and CANVIO HOME device through a cable to the same network that you used when you
backed up the system.
You cannot do a system restore over a wireless connection to the network...
7Insert the rescue media USB thumb drive into a USB port on your computer.
8Turn on the computer. Your computer system boots using the rescue media.
9The computer finds the saved backup image on the CANVIO HOME. If more than one system image exists, click the
image you want to use—usually the most recent one.
10The system checks the available space on the replacement hard drive. After verifying the available space, the restore
process begins.
The restore process may take up to several hours.
Restore a backup (Mac)
Regardless of what username you used to log in when setting up or starting Time Machine backups, you must log in as
timemachineuser to do a Time Machine system restore. To enable password access, you may need to go to Settings >
Advanced > Access and look for timemachineuser.
1From your computer’s Menu Bar or Dock, click the Time Machine icon. Alternatively, under System Preferences, click
Time Machine.
2Click Enter Time Machine.
3Scroll to view the backup list by TimeLine.
4Click the file(s), folder(s), or system image you want to restore.
5Click Restore.
6Choose one of the following: Keep Original, Keep Both, or Replace.
Regardless of the contents on the hard drive and how it is partitioned, the backup and restore feature copies and produces the
same format as the existing hard drive.
Set up a backup schedule
1From the main menu, click the Full System Backup icon.
2Select Schedule Backups, and then click Continue.
3On the Backup Schedules screen, select Full System Backup Not Scheduled and click Edit.

USE THE REMOTE ACCESS FEATURE
The remote access feature lets you access any file on your CANVIO HOME from any computer, tablet, or smartphone that has
an Internet connection. For tablets and smartphones, you download the CANVIO HOME mobile app to access files.
When you access files remotely, a security feature ensures that all the information is encrypted when it travels over the network.
Also, if you choose to view (stream) a video remotely, playback quality is impacted by the upload speed limitations of the Internet
Service Provider (ISP) for the network to which your CANVIO HOME is connected. If remote video playback quality is poor, you
may choose to upgrade your Internet service or download videos rather than stream them. Also note that network connection
speeds are generally faster if you connect your computer to the router using an Ethernet cable, rather than connecting wirelessly.
Use the remote access feature
Turn remote access on or off
vOn the main menu, under Enable Remote Access, click the button to turn the feature on or off.
When you turn on remote access, the system assigns you a PIN. The PIN is your CANVIO HOME’s Personal Identification
Number and is unique to your CANVIO HOME device. The PIN is displayed on the main menu below the Enable Remote Access
on/off switch. You must enter the PIN anytime you want to access files remotely.
Access files remotely from your computer
From a computer, remote access lets you view, upload, and download files when you are connected to a network other than
the one to which your CANVIO HOME is connected.
1Double-click the Canvio
2On the login screen, if the fields are not already filled in, enter your username and password.
3Enter your remote access PIN.
4Click Log In. The CANVIO HOME main menu appears.

Use the mobile app to access files from your Android™ or iOS smartphone or tablet
The CANVIO HOME mobile app works with the following devices:
vAny Android™ smartphone or tablet with Android OS 2.0 or later
vAny iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad running iOS 4.0 or later.
The mobile app lets you upload and download any file type supported by your device. You can also view photos and play music
and videos whose file types your device supports.
1From your mobile device, go to the Android Market™ or the Apple App Store™.
2Search for and install Toshiba Canvio

Home.
3After the app has finished installing, open the app to launch the remote access feature.
4Select your CANVIO HOME device from the device list.
5Your remote access PIN is displayed. Enter your username and password.
6(Optional) Check the box if you want the app to remember your password.
7Click Log in.
8To access a file, select it from the list.
If you select a music or video file, the file plays automatically play in your device’s media player.
STREAM MUSIC, VIDEOS, AND GAMES ON A SMART TV
If you have an Internet-connected Smart TV on the same network as your CANVIO HOME device, the Smart TV can stream
music, videos, and games which found on the device.
The Smart TV must support DLNA, a media streaming standard from the Digital Living Network Alliance.
1Using your Smart TV remote control, select Menu.
2Select Media Player.
3Select the Music or Video folder.
4Select any subfolders to find the file you want.
5Select the song, video, or other streaming media to play.
UPDATE YOUR CANVIO® HOME SOFTWARE
The CANVIO HOME software notifies you if a software update is available right on the main menu, so you can always be
updated to the most current version.
1On the main menu, if a software update is available, the button to the right of Updates flashes blue.
2To update the software, click Updates.
3Click Yes to confirm that you want to download and install the update.
Depending on the update size and the speed of your Internet connection, and update can take from several minutes to a few
hours. Be sure to allow enough time for the update process to complete. Note that network connection speeds are generally faster
if you connect your computer to the router using an Ethernet cable, rather than connecting wirelessly.
After the update has been installed, your CANVIO HOME automatically restarts.

Use settings to customize your CANVIO® HOME
Change which device you are accessing
If more than one CANVIO HOME device resides on the same network, you can access any one of those devices.
1On the main menu, click Settings.
2Under Name, click the arrow to the right of the field, and click the device you want to access.
Turn HDD standby on or off
If you will not be using your CANVIO HOME device frequently, we recommend that you turn on the HDD standby feature. This
feature saves by putting the device into sleep mode after 10 minutes of activity.
This feature is turned off by default.
When your device is in sleep mode, it can take up to 30 seconds to wake up and respond the first time you try to access it.
1On the main menu, click Settings.
2Under Enable HDD Standby, click the button to turn the feature on or off.
Turn your device off
To exit the CANVIO HOME software, you simply close the main menu. However, you may sometimes need to turn off your
physical CANVIO HOME device—for example, to move it to another location. You use the settings to turn off the device.

To turn the device back on, disconnect the AC adapter, and then reinsert it into the power jack. The device takes about one minute
to start up.
Work with users
When you upload files to a private or public share area (see “Work with shares” on page 34), those files are hidden unless
you choose to share them with other people on your network. Before you can give another person access to your share files,
you must add that person as a user.
You can make any user an administrator for your CANVIO HOME device. An administrator has the following rights:
vAdd a private or public share area
vModify a private or public share area
vMake changes to the device settings
Add a user
1On the main menu, click Settings.
2Click the Add User icon
3On the Add User screen, do the following:
vEnter a username.
vEnter a password, and then enter it again to confirm.
vTo make a user an administrator, check the box.
4Click Save.
Change a user's password and grant the user administrator rights
1On the main menu, click Settings.
2Under Manage Users, double-click the username of the user whose information you want to modify.
3To make a user an administrator of the device, check the Administrator box.
4To change a user's password, do the following:
vCheck the Change Password box.
vEnter a new password, and enter the password again to confirm.
5Click Save.
6On the confirmation screen, click OK, and then click Close.
Delete a user
Deleting a user does not delete that user’s private share or data. Another user on the network with administrator privileges still
has access to the shares and files.
1On the main menu, click Settings.
2Under Manage Users, double-click the username of the user you want to delete.
3Click Delete.
4On the confirmation screen, click Yes.
5Click Close.
Work with shares
When you upload files to your CANVIO HOME, those files are available to all users on your network. Alternatively, you can
back up files to a private share. These files remain hidden unless you choose to share them with users you specify (see “Work
When you set up your CANVIO HOME device, you are automatically assigned a private share. You can create additional
private shares, make any share public so that it is available to all your designated users, customize user access to a share,
and delete a share.
Create a private share
You must have administrator rights to create a share. See “Change a user's password and grant the user administrator rights”
on page 33.
1On the main menu, click Settings.
2Click the Add Share icon.
3In the Sharename field, enter a name for the share.
4Click the arrow to the right of the Owner field and click the username of the user who will own this share. By default,
only the owner has access to the files on the share. The owner can give other users access to the files. See “Delete a
share” on page 35.
5Click Save.
Customize user access to a share
1On the main menu, click Settings.
2Under Manage Shares, double-click the share name.
3Do one of the following to set user access privileges:
vTo make the share available to every user on the list, check the Public Share box.
vTo customize share access for an individual user, click the arrow to the right of the username, and then select an
option: Deny (no access), Read Only (user can view but not edit files), Full Access (user can view and edit
files).
4Click Save.
5On the confirmation screen, click Yes, and then click Close.

2Under Manage Shares, double-click the share you want to delete.
3Click Delete.

Your CANVIO HOME system is made up of a number of software programs. The program version of the CANVIO HOME
software itself appears on the main Settings screen in the lower-left corner. You can also view the versions of the other
software programs.

Use advanced settings
Advanced settings allow highly technical users to further customize their CANVIO HOME experience. Most users do not need
to access the advanced settings.
You access the advanced settings by logging in to a web browser, not through the CANVIO HOME application itself.
Use settings to customize your CANVIO® HOME
Log in to the advanced settings
To use the advanced settings, you must log in to a web browser using your CANVIO HOME username and password.
1On the main menu, click Settings.
2Click Advanced. A web browser opens.
3Enter your CANVIO HOME username and password.
The administrator username is “Admin” and the default password is “admin.” We recommend that you change the password to
maintain security.
4(Optional) Click the arrow to the right of the Language field and select the language you want.
5Click Login.
To exit advanced settings, click logout at the top of the screen.
Perform initial setup
We recommend that you keep the default options on the initial setup screens. Only advanced users should change these options.
1Confirm or change the device name and/or description shown onscreen.
2Click Next.
3To keep the default IP and DNS server address settings, leave the boxes checked. To manually enter an IP or DNS server
address, uncheck the relevant box and enter the information.
4Click Next.
5Confirm or change the time zone and/or time service (NTP) settings.
6Click Next.
7Enter your CANVIO HOME administrative password, and enter it again to confirm.
8Click Submit.
9On the Success screen, click OK.
Manage system settings
The system settings include device information, information on current users logged into the device, current device setup,
email notification setup, and shutdown/reboot functionality.
As with all advanced settings, we recommend that most users do not make changes to any of the system settings displayed here.
The main CANVIO HOME main menu provides the features that most users need. Only highly technical, advanced users should
configure these advanced options.
On the General Setup screen, you can change the device name, its description, the date, time zone, and time stamp, among
other settings.
To confirm your changes, click Submit.
E-mail Setup
On the E-mail Setup screen, you can turn notifications on and off. If notification are on, you can turn TLS/SSL and SMTP
authentication on or off, and change the mail server, return path, email recipients, and language.
To send an email notification test, click Send Test.
To confirm your changes, click Submit.
Shut Down/Reboot
On the Shut Down/Reboot screen, you can shut down or reboot your device.
As courtesy, we recommend that you notify all your device users in advance of a “scheduled maintenance” so that the
shutdown/reboot does not interfere with their accessing files.
Manage advanced settings
The advanced settings allow you too change the admin password, upgrade the firmware, change certification, set how to back
up and restore the system, and set how to set up the hard disk drive.
As with all advanced settings, we recommend that most users do not make changes to any of the advanced settings displayed
here. The main CANVIO HOME main menu provides the features that most users need. Only highly technical, advanced users
should configure these advanced options.

The downloader settings allow you to configure the download task and preference, BitTorrent (BT) task and preference, and
scheduler.
As with all advanced settings, we recommend that most users do not make changes to any of the downloader settings displayed

The log screen allows you to view the logs based on event, SAMBA, AFP, and FTP. You can also export logs.
The log display includes the log type, level, date, time, and message. You can delete all log data prior to the past 7 days,
refresh the log display, and filter the display.

Mange printer settings
Your CANVIO HOME can serve as a print server interface. This allows you to connect and share one or more printers through
the device.
The printer settings allow you to view the printer name, manufacturer, model, and status, as well as to view and manage print
jobs (printer name, status, owner, and submitted time) routed through the CANVIO HOME.
You can send a print job to any of the printers recognized by the print server feature.
1To set up a network printer, connect a USB cable to the printer and to the USB port on the back of your CANVIO HOME
device.
To set up more than one printer, connect a USB hub to your CANVIO HOME device, and connect the printers to the hub.
2The printer name and icon will appear listed in your network. Double-click the printer icon.
If the printer name does not appear, reset your device. See “Reset your CANVIO HOME” on page 47.
3Select or install the printer driver.
Depending on your computer’s operating system, the installation steps may vary. Please refer to the instructions that came with
your computer or printer for driver installation instructions.
4Print a file or test page.
OTHER WAYS TO MANAGE FILES ON YOUR CANVIO® HOME
Use your CANVIO® HOME without installing the software
The CANVIO HOME software provides an easy-to-use setup process and lets you access your music, videos, photos, and
other files anywhere you can make an Internet connection. However, you may also your CANVIO HOME as a shared network
storage device on your home network, accessible from Windows and Mac computers, without installing any special software.
Connect to your CANVIO® HOME as a network storage device
1Set up your CANVIO HOME by following the steps in “Set up your device” on page 10.
2On your computer, open Windows Explorer (Windows) or the Finder (Mac).
3Click Network.
4The CANVIO HOME icon appears under Storage. Right-click the CANVIO HOME icon and click Properties.
5Highlight the IP address, right-click, and click Copy.
Alternatively, you can write down the IP address,.
6In Windows Explorer or the Finder, click on your computer icon (usually named Computer or My Computer).
7Click Map network drive near the top of the screen.
8In the Folder field, type \\, followed by the IP address of your CANVIO HOME, followed by \Public. For example:
\\192.168.0.100\Public
9(Optional) Do either of the following:
vIf you want to connect automatically to the drive when you log in to your computer on this network, check the
Reconnect at login box.
vIf you want to use a different username and password to connect to the CANVIO HOME than the one you use to log
in to your computer, check the Connect using different credentials box.
10Click Finish. Your CANVIO HOME public share now appears as a folder under your computer icon in Windows Explorer
or the Finder. The folder name is Public (\[CANVIO HOME IP address]).
Manage files from your CANVIO® HOME as a network storage device
You can work with the CANVIO HOME Public folder in the same way as any other folder on your computer: create subfolders,
drag and drop folders and files, and so on. Any files you move into your Public folder are available to other CANVIO HOME
users on your network.
Set up a private share on your CANVIO® HOME as a network storage device
For information on private shares, see “Work with shares” on page 34.
To create a private share when you are using your CANVIO HOME as a network storage device, you open the advanced
settings in a web browser.
1In Windows Explorer (Windows) or the Finder (Mac), click Network.
2Under Storage, right-click the CANVIO HOME icon, and click View device webpage. A web browser opens
showing the advanced settings login screen.
3Log in to the advanced settings using your CANVIO HOME username and password.
4Click Storage in the left panel, and then click the Shares tab.

Add users to a private share on your CANVIO® HOME as a network storage device
If you want other people on your network to have access to a private share you create, you need to add them as users and give
them access to the share.
1While in the advanced settings, click Access in the left panel. (To access the advanced settings, follow steps 1–4 in
“Set up a private share on your CANVIO® HOME as a network storage device” on page 46.)
2Click the Users tab, and then click .
3Enter the user information and click Submit.
4To assign the user permission to the share, do the following:
vClick the Share Permission tab.
vClick the share name, and then click .
vClick the Users tab, and then click the user to whom you want to give permission to the share.
vClick the arrow to the right of the list, and click the permission level.
vClick Submit.
Use the Users tab on the Access panel in advanced settings to edit user info or delete users. Use the Share Permission tab to
modify user permission settings to a private share.
Use Windows Explorer/Finder to preserve your folder structure for uploaded files
The CANVIO HOME upload function provides a streamlined way to copy files from your computer so that you can easily share
them with others on your network. However, if you have organized your files in a certain way, you can use Windows Explorer
(Windows) or the Finder (Mac) to drag and drop folders and files onto the CANVIO HOME Public folder, the same way you
would with any folder. Simply locate the Public folder in Windows Explorer or the Finder, and drag and drop as usual. Your
files still appear in the CANVIO HOME software as if you uploaded them directly. So, for example, any photos you upload by
drag-and-drop appear under Photos along with any you upload using the software.
To see the folder structure, click the Files
by drag-and-drop. Files you uploaded using the software appear directly under their file type folder (Music, Video, Photo, or
Other).

The reset button is located on the back of the device. See “Get to know your CANVIO® HOME” on page 9 for the exact
location.
To reset the CANVIO HOME, use a ballpoint pen or other small-tipped element to press and hold the reset button for at least
two (2) seconds. This resets the device name and resets the administrator password to the default “admin.”
Erase data
If your CANVIO HOME contains sensitive data, please be aware that the following standard deletion procedures do not
remove the data from the device:
vSelecting Delete for a target file
vPutting files in and emptying the Recycle Bin
vReformatting the media
vReinstalling the CANVIO HOME installation software
The procedures above delete only the initial part of the data used for file management. This makes the file invisible to the
operating system, but specialized utilities can still read the data.
If you dispose of or transfer your CANVIO HOME device, use one of the following methods to destroy all data and prevent
unauthorized use of such data:
vPhysically destroy the CANVIO HOME device
vUse a proven specialized utility to overwrite all the data
vTake the device to a professional deletion service
Toshiba is not responsible for the deletion of the data on your device.
Solutions to common issues
The network cannot find the CANVIO
Verify the following:
vThe Ethernet cable is securely connected into the CANVIO HOE Ethernet port and to a network router or switch.
vThe router is connected to a working outlet.
vThe computer and the CANVIO HOME are on the same network subnet.
vThe router or switch is set up to provide IP addresses automatically (DHCP server).
vThe computer meets the requirements to install the CANVIO HOME software. See “System requirements” on page 10.
The network router or switch failed
1Verify that the router or switch Ethernet cables are connected correctly.
2Verify that the router or switch AC adapter is plugged into a working outlet and into the router or switch.
3Reboot both the CANVIO HOME device and the router/switch.
The indicator lights are not lit
Verify that the AC adapter is plugged into a working outlet and into the CANVIO HOME power jack.
The amber indicator light is on
This indicates that the CANVIO HOME device has less than 10% capacity remaining for any additional digital media and files.
You may notice significantly slower performance and should delete files or backups to ensure proper device operation.
Please contact Toshiba at http://www.toshiba.com to purchase an additional CANVIO HOME device to add more storage
space.
To reset a username or password, you can modify the username or password using the Manage Users feature. See “Change a
user's password and grant the user administrator rights” on page 33.
To reset an administrator’s username and password, reset the CANVIO HOME device. See “Reset your CANVIO HOME” on
page 47.
I don’t know if my version of Android™ OS is supported for the mobile app
If your device is not supported for use with CANVIO HOME, a message appears.
I cannot open the music, video, photo, or file feature
1Reboot your computer, tablet, or smartphone.
2Verify that the CANVIO HOME software is installed on the device.
3Log back into the CANVIO HOME application.
4Select the music, video, photo, or files icon to open the digital media or files.
