A Consumer Guide to Product Safety
IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
When used in the directed manner, this unit has been designed and manufactured to ensure your personal safety. However, improper use can result in potential electrical shock or fire hazards. Please read all safety and operating instructions carefully before installation and use, and keep these instructions handy for future reference. Take special note of all warnings listed in these instructions and on the unit.
1. Water and Moisture – The unit should not be used near water. For example: near a bathtub, washbowl, kitchen sink, laundry tub, swimming pool or in a wet basement.
2. Ventilation – The unit should be situated so that its location or position does not interfere with its proper ventilation. For example, it should not be situated on a bed, sofa, rug or similar surface that may block ventilation openings. Also, it should not be placed in a built-in installation, such as a bookcase or cabinet, that may impede the flow of air through the ventilation openings.
3. Heat – The unit should be situated away from heat sources such as radiators, heat registers, stoves or other appliances (including amplifiers) that produce heat.
4. Power Sources – The unit should be connected to a power supply only of the type described in the operating instructions or as marked on the appliance.
5. Power-Cord Protection – Power supply cords should be routed so that they are not likely to be walked on or pinched by items placed upon or against them. It is always best to have a clear area from where the cord exits the unit to where it is plugged into an AC outlet.
6. Cleaning – The unit should be cleaned only as recommended. See the Maintenance section of this manual for cleaning instructions.
7. Objects and Liquid Entry – Care should be taken so that objects do not fall and liquids are not spilled into any openings or vents located on the product.
8. Attachments – Do not use attachments not recommended by the product manufacturer.
9. Lightning and Power Surge Protection – Unplug the unit from the wall outlet and disconnect the antenna or cable system during a lightning storm or when it is left unattended and unused for long periods of time. This will prevent damage to the product due to lightning and power-line surges.
10. Overloading – Do not overload wall outlets, extension cords, or integral convenience receptacles as this can result in a risk of fir e or electric shock.
11. Damage Requiring Service – The unit should be serviced by qualified service personnel when: A. the power supply cord or plug has been damaged. B. objects have fallen into or liquid has been spilled into the enclosure. C. the unit has been exposed to rain. D. the unit has been dropped or the enclosure damaged. E. the unit exhibits a marked change in performance or does not operate normally.
12. Antenna – Do not connect an external antenna to the unit (other than that provided).
13. Periods of Nonuse – If the unit is to be left unused for an extended period of time, such as a month or longer, the power cord should be unplugged from the unit to prevent damage or corrosion.
14. Servicing – The user should not attempt to service the unit beyond those methods described in the user’s operating instructions. Service methods not covered in the operating instructions should be referred to qualified service personnel.

Getting Started
Install AC Adaptor
Connect the AC adaptor cable plug into the jack on the back of the unit, then plug the AC adaptor into wall outlet.
Install/Replace Backup Battery
The TMX1 uses a backup battery system to provide continuous alarm operation and clock settings in the event of a power failure. If the Backup Battery has been installed and a power failure occurs or the AC cord is accidentally disconnected, the display will remain lit and the current time and alarm time settings will be temporarily maintained. Otherwise, you must reset the time and alarm settings. If the unit has no display or the Battery Low Icon [ ] located on the left of the display is lit, it is time to replace the backup batteries.
1. Please make sure the AC adaptor is connected. Otherwise all settings may be lost during battery replacement.
2. Open the battery compartment cover located on the bottom of the unit.
3. Insert 2 “AA” (R6) batteries, checking that the polarity (+ and – ends of the batteries) matches the drawing inside the battery compartment. We recommend the use of alkaline batteries for longer life. Different types of batteries or new and used batteries are not to be mixed.
4. Close the battery door.

Do not mix old and new batteries.
Do not mix alkaline, standard (carbon -zinc) or rechargeable (nickel-cadmium) batteries.
Maintenance
Place the unit on a level surface away from sources of direct sunlight or excessive heat.
Protect your furniture when placing your unit on a natural wood and lacquered finish. A cloth or other protective material should be placed between it and the furniture.
Clean your unit with a soft cloth moistened only with mild soap and water. Stronger cleaning agents, such as Benzine, thinner or similar materials can damage the surface of the unit.

Using The Remote Control Unit
Install/Replace the Remote Control Battery
Before using the remote control, make sure to install batteries.
1. Open the battery door located on the back of the unit.
2. Insert 2 “AAA” (R3) batteries. Make sure the polarity ( + and – ends of the batteries) is correct.
3. Close the battery door.
When the remote control stops operating or its range seems reduced, it is time to replace the batteries with new ones.

Setting Time Zone
Please follow these simple steps to match the setting to where you live.
1. Depending on your location and whether or not DST (Daylight Savings Time) is in effect, set the of the unit to ‘+1hr’ or ‘-1hr’ to make the DST adjustment (advance or regress the time one hour).
2. Press and hold the S Zone button located on the back of the unit for approx. 2 seconds until the unit shows current time zone. Press category up or down to select the time zone.

3. Press the 7 Enter button to exit the setting mode. You should hear 2 beeps indicating the time zone has been set. If no button is pressed for 10 sec., in Zone set mode, changed settings are set and unit exits mode, accompanied by 2 beeps.
Setting Clock Time and Calendar
Note: If you have an active subscription to XM Satellite Radio, you can skip this section. Instead, please see directions on page 8 regarding the XM TIME SYNCH function.
1. Press and hold the T Clock Adj button located on the back of the unit for 2 seconds.
2. The year display at the lower right will flash. Press the 7 Enter button to accept the current setting, or press Category up and down until the current year is displayed. Press the 7 Enter button to confirm year setting. You should hear 1 beep indicating the year is set and the date display at the lower right will flash. Press the 7 Enter button to accept the current setting, or press Category up and down until current date is displayed. Press the 7 Enter button to confirm date setting. You should hear 1 beep indicating the date is set and the time will flash. Press Category up and down, or hold Category up and down button for faster display until the current time is showing. Press the 7 Enter button to confirm clock setting. You should hear 2 beeps indicating the clock time is set and will exit Clock and Calendar setting mode. If no button is pressed for 10 seconds at any point during CLOCK ADJ, the changed settings are set and the unit exits adjust mode, accompanied by 2 beeps.

Using the XM Radio Time Sync Feature
Clock settings (year/month/date/hr/min) can be sychronized (set) via satellite once XM sevice is activated (see page 9 for information on activating XM service). To confirm synchronization of your TMX1:
1. Press the 3 Menu button.
2. Use the 9 Rotary knob to select >TIME SYNC<.
3. Press the 7 Enter button.
4. If a previous synchronization was successful, the display will show >SYNCHRONIZED<. If not, then >NOT SYNCED< is displayed. Although the clock is automaticllay synchronized while listening to XM radio, if you wish to make the unit synchronize, select >ON< from the TIME SYNCH menu and press the 7 Enter button. The display should change to read ‘Updating’. The current time will then appear when the display returns to the default state.
If you do not want to auto synch the clock whenever you listen to XM radio (for example, some people prefer to set their clock ahead a few minutes to avoid being late), you can disable this feature. To do so:
1. Press the 3 Menu button.
2. Use the 9 Rotary knob to select >TIME SYNC<.
3. Press the 7 Enter button.
4. Use the 9 Rotary knob to select >OFF<.
5. Press the 7 Enter button. 2 beeps will confirm that time synch is now off. To enable the feature again, follow the same steps but set to >ON<.
Activating XM Satellite Service
1. Attach the XM Connect + Play antenna (sold separately) to the Connect + Play antenna jack on the back of the unit.
2. To begin receiving XM satellite radio programs, press the Power On Button to turn on the TMX1. Press the Mode button to select XM mode. The display will show “XM Satellite Radio” followed by XM channel information. T une to channel 1, the XM Preview channel. Adjust antenna until you have at least 3 reception bars in the upper left of the display. [ ] For best reception, place antenna close to a Southern facing window. Refer to XM Connect and Play Antenna user manual for more information.
3. Select channel 0. The eight-character XM satellite Radio ID for your receiver will be displayed. Write the ID here:
Note: Check your XM radio ID carefully. The letters I, O, S and F are not used.
4. Activate your XM Satellite Radio servce. To subscribe, make sure you have a major credit card and your XM Satellite Radio ID handy. Contact XM at http://activate.xmradio.com or call 1.800.XMRADIO (I.800.967.2346).
5. After subscribing, make sure you keep the TMX1 ON for at least an hour to complete the activation process. Activation is complete when you can access the full channel lineup on your TMX1.
Basic XM Operations
Selecting Channels
You may select channels by using the 9 Rotary Knob, by pressing one of the preset buttons (0-9), or by entering the channel number directly. Similar functions are available on the remote control.
Using the Rotary Knob
1. Turn the 9 Rotary Knob to a desired channel. See Direct Tune (page 11) for information on selecting channels with or without pressing the XM enter button.
Direct Entry
1. Press the 4
2. Press number keys matching the desired channel number. For instance, for channel 20, press number 2, then number 0.
Using Presets
There are 30 total presets, 10 in each bank (A, B and C) [ ]. Press the press the preset button (0-9) for the channel (for example, A-3, C-9, B-7).
To set a channel preset:
1. Tune in the desired channel.
2. Press the 4
3. Press and hold the number key for the preset you want to set. The unit will beep when the channel is stored. Continue until you've stored all the presets you wish to.
To select a stored preset:
1. Press the 4

Memorizing Song Information
TMX1 can remember the artist name and title of the song or programming you are currently listening to.
1. Press and release the songs, after which any new information that is saved replaces the oldest entry.
2. To recall saved information while listening to XM radio, press and hold memory for 2 seconds. Turn the Rotary knob to see the entire list of songs.
Changing the Display
Press the
1. Channel name and number with artist name.
2. Channel name and number with song title.
3. Artist name with song title.
Recall Last Channel

Selecting Categories
XM channels are organized into “neighborhoods” of similar musical or programming content. To tune to channels by categories:

You can program TMX1 to remember your favorite songs; when any of these songs are played on any channel, TMX1 alerts you with a beep and allows you to immediately switch to that channel.
1. While the song is playing, press the “Song Selected” on its screen. TMX1 can remember up to 20 songs; when the list is full, any new entry replaces the oldest item in the list.
2. When any song in the list plays on any channel, TMX1 beeps and displays “Song Found” and the name of the song on its screen.

DIRECT TUNE
By default, your TMX1 comes with Direct Tune set to ON, meaning that turning the 9 Rotary knob to a desired channel while listening to XM radio will change to that channel (without pressing the XM button) , but you can use the 9 and song titles on other channels while listening to a current channel. To do so you must change the Direct Tune option to OFF.

Listening to AM or FM Radio
1. While the power is ON, press L MODE button until “AM Radio” or “FM Radio” appears in the display.
2. Use the 8 Category up button or 6 Category down button or 9 Rotary knob to select stations.

4. Pressing the 5 Scan button (Search button on the remote controller) causes TMX1 to automatically tune to the next station and play it for 10 seconds. If you hear a station you like, press Scan again to stop on that station.
5. Pressing the J Jump button changes back to the last channel listened to for more than 5 seconds.
When you change stations, TMX1 automatically sets reception to stereo.

Auxiliary Input
To listen to another audio source such as an MP3 player through TMX1:
1. Connect the audio source’s output to the jack marked “AUX” at the rear of TMX1.
2. While the power is ON, press L MODE button until “Aux input” appears in the display.
Line Out Operation
You can connect the unit to another line-level device such as an amplifier or recording device through the Line Out Jack located at the back of the unit. The volume setting on the unit does not affect the line level. Adjust volume level using the volume control on the device you connect to.
Headphone Jack
Connect the headphone (not included) to the Headphone Jack located on the back of the unit. The built-in speakers will not operate while the headphone is connected.
Changing Volume
1. Press P Volume + button or Q Volume - button to change volume settings (0-30); the level is shown on the display. Volume does NOT change once it has reached minimum (0) or maximum (30).
2. If volume is not changed after 2 seconds, unit will go back to previous state.
Adjusting Sound Quality
Press EQ knob repeatedly to select Rock, Classic, Pop , Jazz, or Flat until your desired sound mode selected.
Power On/Off
Press M Power button to turn the unit On or Off. Power On defaults to last mode used.
Setting Alarm Time
1. Press the Alarm set 1 button or Alarm set 2 button and hold for 2 sec. Currently set alarm flashes. Either Alarm 1 or Alarm 2 icon is shown, depending on whether Alarm 1 Set or Alarm 2 Set has been pressed. The currently set Wake To mode is also shown.
2. Use the 6 8 Category up/down buttons to set Alarm Time.
3. Press the 7 Enter button to confirm alarm time setting. You should hear 1 beep indicating the alarm time is set.
4. Use the 9 Rotary knob to cycle through and set Wake To modes: XM, FM, AM and BUZZER.
5. Press the 7 Enter button to confirm the wake to mode.
NOTE: Radio Wake To functions use preset channels. Preset channels must be set before using XM, FM or AM alarm functions. See Using Presets on page 10 for information on setting XM presets or see Listening to AM or FM Radio on page 11 for information on AM/FM
presets.
IF Wake To: Buzzer
Wake To mode is set, 2 BEEPS CONFIRM and EXIT.... Setting Alarm is complete.
IF Wake To: XM (Preset Channels A1-A10, B1-B10, or C1-C10)
Use the 9 Rotary knob to set desired preset Channel. Currently set Channel flashes (unless cycling through channels). Press the 7 Enter button to confirm, wake to channel is set, 2 BEEPS CONFIRM and EXIT.
NOTE: If XM satellite signal is interrupted or lost, a buzzer will sound.
IF Wake To: FM (FM Preset Channels P1-P10)
Use the 9 Rotary knob to set Wake To preset Station. Press the 7 Enter button to confirm, wake to FM station is set, 2 BEEP CONFIRM and EXIT.
IF, Wake To: AM (AM Preset Channels P1-P10)
Use the 9 Rotary knob to set Wake To preset Station. Press the 7 Enter button to confirm, wake to AM station is set. 2 BEEP CONFIRM and EXIT.
6. If at any point in ALARM SET process no button is pressed in 10 seconds, changes are set (2 BEEPS CONFIRM and EXIT).
Note: Audio will be muted when alarm setting.
Turning Alarms On and Off
Press the Alarm On/Off button. Repeatedly pressing ALARM ON/OFF cycles through the following states:
ALARM 1 ON (Alarm 1 icon is shown) Alarm 1 time and Wake To icon for Alarm 1 are shown.
ALARM 2 ON (Alarm 2 icon is shown) Alarm 2 time and Wake To icon for Alarm 2 are shown. NOTE: Alarm time is shown for 2 seconds before Exit.
BOTH ALARMS ON (Alarm icons 1 and 2 are shown) Wake To icons for ALARM 1 and 2 are shown.
BOTH ALARMS OFF (no icons shown).
Each state change is accompanied by a beep. When an Alarm is sounding, pressing Alarm On/Off will turn off whichever alarm is sounding.
Previewing an Alarm
Press and release the alarm1 or alarm 2 icon. The currently set Wake To icon and wake to station/channel also appear. The unit returns to previous state after 5 seconds, or if an Alarm set button is pressed again.

Resetting Alarms (when they are sounding)
Press the Alarm reset button. The Alarm will stop and reset to sound again at the same time the next day. If alarm is not reset or turned off, it will sound for 60 minutes and then reset for the next day. Pressing other buttons such as Volume, Mode, Sleep, etc. will switch the unit to that mode and reset the alarm to go off the next day.
Using SNOOZE Function (when alarm is sounding)
Press the Snooze/Dimmer button after the alarm sounds. The alarm will go off and will come on again in approx. 9 minutes. You may repeat this cycle several times during the 1 hour alarm cycle.
When an alarm is NOT sounding (DIMMER):
Pressing the
Snooze/Dimmer button repeatedly will cycle through HI, MED, LOW display brightness.
Using the Sleep Function
The Sleep button can be pressed while in any mode: XM, FM, AM, and AUX (line in). Sleep mode shuts theTMX1 off after the chosen number of minutes. It does NOT shut off any AUX device plugged into the line in jack.
1. Pressing The sleep time remainng will show for 10 seconds, then the display will revert to showing the current time.
2. While in sleep mode, pressing the next lowest setting.
3. Pressing the R Sleep volume button (on back of unit) repeatedly will adjust sleep volume.
NOTE: AUX devices continue to run after sleep mode shuts off the TMX1; their battery power may be drained if running on batteries.
Sleep button repeatedly will cycle through the following settings: 90 minutes, 60 minutes, 30 minutes, 15 minutes, OFF.

Using the Nap Function
Nap function can be used at any time, even when the unit is off. Nap will sound a buzzer within the selected number of minutes.
1. Pressing Nap button repeatedly will cycle through the following times: 90 minutes, 60 minutes, 30 minutes, 15 minutes, OFF.
NOTE: SNOOZE does NOT function while NAP alarm is sounding.
Troubleshooting

Audio on XM traffic and weather channels sounds different than other XM channels

Limited 90-Day Warranty Information
Timex Products, a division of SDI Technologies Inc. (hereafter referred to as SDI Technologies), warrants this product to be free from defects in workmanship and materials, under normal use and conditions, for a period of 90 days from the date of original purchase.
Should this product fail to function in a satisfactory manner, it is best to first return it to the store where it was originally purchased. Should this fail to resolve the matter and service still be required by reason of any defect or malfunction during the warranty period, SDI T echnologies will repair or, at its discretion, replace this product without charge (except for a $10.00 charge for handling, packing, return UPS/postage, and insurance). This decision is subject to verification of the defect or malfunction upon delivery of this product to the Factory Service Center listed below. The product must include proof of purchase, including date of purchase. The fee for service after the warranty period or without proof of purchase is $30.00.
Before returning this product for service, please first replace the batteries (if applicable) with fresh ones, as exhausted or defective batteries are the most common cause of problems encountered.
If service is still required:
1. Remove the batteries (if applicable) and pack the unit in a well padded, heavy corrugated box.
2. Enclose a photocopy of your sales receipt, credit card statement, or other proof of the date of purchase, if within the warranty period.
3. Enclose a check or money order payable to the order of SDI Technologies, for the sum of $10.00 ($30.00 after the warranty period).
4. Send the unit prepaid and insured, to the Factory Service Center listed below.

NOTE: This warranty is valid only if the product is used for the purpose for which it was designed. It does not cover (i) products which
have been damaged by negligence, misuse or accident, or which have been modified or repaired by unauthorized persons; (ii) cracked or broken cabinets, or units damaged by excessive heat; (iii) damage to CD’s or tape cassettes (if applicable); (iv) the cost of shipping this product to the Factory Service Center and its return to the owner.
This warranty is valid only in the United States of America and does not extend to owners of the product subsequent to the original purchaser. Any applicable implied warranties are also limited to 90 days, and SDI Technologies will not be liable for consequential damages. (Some states do not allow limitations on implied warranties or exclusion of consequential damages, so these restrictions may not apply to you.) This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights which vary from state to state.
