1. Introduction
1.1. Product Overview
Thinklogical’s Virtuoso-PRO Professional Audio Extension System is designed for professional audio
applications and provides the highest quality, industry-leading audio performance. The Virtuoso-PRO
transmits and extends up to eight audio signals over two fibers. Individual modules can be installed in a
stand-alone chassis or up to four modules can be installed in a Q-4300 Chassis. The system supports a
combination of audio signals such as, AES3-id, S/PDIF and analog stereo, making this a versatile and
flexible extension system. Featuring unrivaled audio extension technology, the system allows a sampling
rate of 32-192 kHz—ideal for broadcast applications.
Virtuoso-Pro Transmitter Module in a Stand-Alone Chassis
Virtuoso-PRO Audio Extenders, Revision A 4March 2012
®
The Virtuoso-PRO is available in a stand alone or rack-mountable chassis model. The compact stand
CLASS 1 LASERS do not require any special
precautions under conditions of normal use.
alone system accommodates a transmitter or receiver unit and is compact enough to fit discretely on a
desktop. The rack-mountable Q-4300 chassis houses up to four modules. Virtuoso-PRO audio
modules can be combined with Thinklogical’s video extension modules (SDI or DVI) to provide an
ideal solution for users who need both professional audio and video extension in one unit. The
system also supports either single or multi-mode fiber and is fully compatible with Thinklogical’s video
and KVM extension systems as well as the VX and HDX Router line of products.
1.2. Laser Information
All Q-4300 modules are designed and identified as
Class 1 LASER products
.
2. System Features
2.1 General System Features
The Q-4300’s hot-swappable interface modules allow the unit to be used in a variety of applications, as
either a transmitter, a receiver or a transceiver.
Installation possibilities are expanded with built-in support for either multi-mode or single mode fiber,
making this a convenient and cost effective solution to combat the restrictions involved with the
distribution of uncompressed broadcast quality video signals over long distances. Each module is hot
swappable and, in addition, the standard SFP+ optics (with LC connectors) are hot swappable and hot
pluggable. Every module is fully compatible with all of Thinklogical’s VX Router line of products.
3. The Q-Series Virtuoso-Pro Audio System
3.1. Types of Connections
All physical connections to the product use industry-standard connectors. Non-supplied cables are
available commercially or through Thinklogical. All connections are found on the rear of the unit.
All models are connected by fiber-optic cables (see paragraph 3.1.1 below, and paragraph 4.2.1 on
page 8) to provide communication from the transmitter to the receiver. The transmitter connects to
the source(s) with standard copper cables and the receiver provides an interface to the output
device(s) (speakers, mixers, amplifiers, etc) using each device’s standard copper cables.
3.1.1 Fiber Cable
Fiber optic cables connect the Transmitters to the Receivers. Standard, multi-mode fiber optic cables
must be 50 or 62.5 microns, terminated with LC type fiber optic connectors (see Technical
Specifications, page 10). Be careful not to kink or pinch the fiber optic cable as it is being installed
and keep all bend radii to no less than 3 inches (76.2mm).
3.1.2 Transmitter
A Transmitter module connects to the audio source(s) through copper cables. The connections for the QSeries Transmitter Modules can be viewed in detail on page 8.

3.1.3 Receiver
The Receiver module connects to the audio output device(s) through copper cables. The connections
for the Q-Series Receiver Modules can be viewed in detail on page 8.
3.1.4 Transceiver
A Transceiver module combines one fully functional Transmitter and one fully functional Receiver in a
single module. Connector configurations are the same as for the Transmit and Receive modules.
4. The Q-Series Virtuoso-PRO Tx and Rx Modules
Q-Series Virtuoso-PRO Tx, Rx and TR modules include the following features:
Supports balanced AES3-id (2), S/PDIF (2 optical, 2 phono) and balanced or unbalanced analog (2)
Extends up to 4 channels of audio over one fiber and up to 8 channels over 2 fibers
Signal transmission up to 40 kilometers via fiber optic cable; no RF interference
Compact stand-alone unit houses one Tx or one Rx module
Meets audio requirements for both broadcast and post-production environments
32-192 kHz sampling rate
Simple plug and play
Compatible with Thinklogical’s Video and KVM Extension Systems and the VX and HDX Routers
Additional Features when used with the Q-4300 Chassis:
Four Virtuoso-PRO Receiver Modules in a Q-4300 Chassis
Houses up to 4 hot-swappable modules (can mix both audio and video modules in one chassis)
Dual, current-sharing, hot-swappable power supplies
Front panel status monitoring and control

The unit operates with a single optical fiber from the TX to the RX. The TX can transmit audio to the RX
over fiber A1 but the RX cannot send information to the TX.
4.2 Audio Cables
The required numbers of 3.5mm Audio Cables (CBL000016-006FR) are included with each Virtuoso-
Pro Extender (2 for each TX and RX-Unbalanced Audio, 4 for each TX and RX-Balanced Audio). All
other Virtuoso-PRO audio cables are available commercially or through Thinklogical upon request.

4.2.1 Connecting to the Virtuoso-PRO
The Transmitter is connected to the Receiver via fiber-optic cables. The audio sources connect to the
transmitter with any combination of one or more of the available BNC 75Ωcoax (AES3-id), TRS
3.5mm (balanced analog) and S/PDIF (RCA-phono and Optical) cables. The Receiver connects to the
output devices with the same type connectors.

4.3 AQM Module Indicator LEDs
Each AQM module features two SFP modules. Each SFP (Small Form-factor Pluggable Module)
features three green LEDs that indicate its current state and that of its fiber connection(s). These
states are labeled on the cover of the Virtuoso-PRO Stand-Alone Chassis.
SFP Present: Used on all module types, indicates that an SFP is installed.
TX OK: Indicates that the internal PLL circuitry is operating properly (Transmitter)
Link Enabled: Optical transmitter enabled (Transmitter)
Signal Present: A valid signal level is being received (Receiver)
Link OK: Valid data is being received (Receiver)
