3. Data Service Options
The Scout application that you install on your device req uires a means of accessing the p ublic Internet, whi ch is
typically provided by your carrier’s data network.
The Scout application communicates wit h the Scout servers t o get routing, maps, and p oints of interest via you r
carrier’s data network. You do not need to purchase addition al data service s if you already have a data o r email
services plan for your device. However, if y ou do not already have a data or email service s plan, you must ord er
one from your carrier so you can use the S cout applicatio n.
The following graphic shows the control bu ttons for a device ru nning Windows 8. Y our own device m ay vary
slightly. For the Scout application, most functions are ac cessed from the devi ce’s touch-screen. Scout can be
viewed in either Portrait or Landscape mode s.
In order to get information for navigation, devices are equipped with a GPS receiver that uses signals from satellites
orbiting the earth. If this is your first GPS device, the following tips will help you get started.
When using GPS, make sure you are outside with a clear view of the sky and no buildings or trees are
in the way.
Remain stationary to acquire the initial GPS signal before you start your journey.
The time to acquire the first GPS signal of the day may take up to 2-3 minutes, so please be patient.
Keeping your device powered on will help make getting subsequent GPS signals much faster during
that same day.
6. Launching Scout

8.11 Initial Driving Directions
Within a few seconds of selecting a Drive To location, S cout calculates wh at it believes to be an opt imal route to
your destination and tells you how to sta rt your trip.
If you are not moving, Scout may not know your direction of travel, so the first few driving direction s may be
incorrect since Scout may initially make an incorrect assumption. However, once you start moving, Scout learns
your direction of travel and provides an update d set of driving directions.
For more information about navigation views, see page 24
.
8.12 Moving to the Nearest Street
If you are not directly on a street, for example you are in a larg e parking lot o r

If you realize you have missed a turn or have otherwi se gotten off the route, just keeping driving. S cout detects yo ur
current location and recalculates a new set of drivi ng direction s to get you back on tra ck.
It may take approximately 15 to 30 seconds for Scout to update your route. If during this process you make
additional deviations from your current rout e, Scout may have to contact its serv ers for another n ew route.
Since Scout requires access your carrier’s network, if you are off route and outside of the carrier’s cove rage area,
you must return to your carrier’s cov erage area in order f or Scout to recalculate your route.

GPS signal weak, Cannot get GPS signal, or No GPS data
Move to an area where your device has a clearer view of the sky and can still connect with your dev ice. Please note that
some car windshields that ha ve heat-reflective coati ngs may reduce the qua lity of the GPS signal. Y our device should
announce when you have adequate GPS signal again.
The GPS will not work if the device’s battery charge level is below about 15%. Starting with a f reshly charged standard
battery, we have used Scout for around 4 hours before it beca me necessary to connect the ch arging cable. If you get a
low battery warning, connect a charging ca ble as soon as possible. In some case s, you may need to wait a while f or the
battery to become sufficiently charged so that the GPS receiver will work.
Network signal weak
If the carrier network signal is weak, move to an area where reception is better and try the function that requires network
access again.
Scout encountered an error
Scout is having technical problems with the specific request that you ma de. This can be due to an address t hat it cannot
find, or mapping data that does not allow routing from where you a re to where you want to g o. In this case, try to use a
nearby address.
Scout not available
If you get an advisory message that Scout is not available, exit the application and then re -launch it. If the problem
recurs, it may be due to a temporary server outage.
Scout could not generate a route between the two endpo ints of the rout e. This may be a tempo rary error if you have a
weak GPS signal when establishing the o rigin, but may be due to erro rs in the map data in the a rea around the
destination.
17. FAQs
Why do I need the carrier’s data serv ice?
The data plan allows you to access nationwide rout es, maps, and Places co ntent from the Scout se rvers using t he data
communication features of your device. These services a re different from your cellular airtime. To order a data plan,
please contact your wireless carrier.
How long after I apply for the data serv ice until I can use my Scout app?
With data, you should be able to start using the S cout applicati on right after it has b een downloa ded.
How many devices can I install Scout on with my account?
There is no limit of how many of your devices on whi ch you can install Scout. To access Scout on different devices,
simply install the app and then log in with your scout.me User Name and Password that you are a sked to create the first
time you launch Scout. However, you can only use Scout’s p remium features (voi ce-guided, turn-by-tu rn navigation,
automatic reroute when a turn is missed, etc.) on one dev ice at a time.
Does Scout use up my voice plan minutes?
Scout uses data to provide its navigation functions. Using data does not use any of your voice minutes. Ho wever, if you
call a business from within the Scout app, you will be incurring voice minutes.
How do I increase or decrease the voice promp t volume?
Speaker volume can be controlled with the volume butt ons on the si de of the device.
How do I control the backlighting?
The backlight can be controlled from within Scout’s Tools & Extras menu >> Preferences >> Navigation >> Backlight
menu.
GPS accuracy can range from 20m (approx. 65 ft) to 100m (approx. 328 ft). Most of the time, the GPS is accurate to less
than 50 meters (approx. 164 ft).
What are ideal conditions for GPS navigation?
Ideally, a device with a GPS receiver needs a clear view of the sky, star ting from about five to ten de grees above the
horizon. Solid or massive obstructions can redu ce accuracy or block GPS signal s, and may cause extended initializatio n
time (time to first GPS fix). Common obstructions include tall buildings, covered parking lots, tun nels, trees, and t errain
features.
If you are parked in a covered parking lot or near a tall building, it is recommended th at you move to an open a rea and
then begin to use Scout.
Why does GPS not work near buildings and other tall objects?
Your device requires signals from GPS satellites in order to wo rk, so it needs a clear view of the sky. Dense materials
(such as concrete, rock, steel, heavy wood), tall buildings, terrain features (like mountain s, ridges, and cliffs), a nd large
trees can block or degrade GPS signals a nd may make it impo ssible to det ermine your location.
GPS satellites are not always immediately overhead and could be anywhere i n the skies at any tim e, even low on t he
horizon; however, there are enough satellites in orbit so that four or more will be in view of your device if not blocked by
large objects, terrain, or dense materials.
How do I know that my device is receiving GPS sign als?
Scout alerts you if your device is not receiving GPS signals. If this happens, move to an area where there is a clear view
of the sky so your device can receive GPS signals from spa ce.
What happens if I’m using Scout for driving directions and I lose the GPS signal while driving across a bridge
or through a tunnel or lose the GPS signal for some oth er reason?
Scout remembers the speed at which you were driving before losi ng the GPS sig nal. Scout continues t o give you driving
directions based on an estimate of the projected dista nce that you may have trav eled at your la st recorded rate of speed.
Scout recalculates your current position when you regai n a GPS signal and adjusts your drivin g directions accordingly.
What does the speech recognition und erstand?
The recognition is optimized to work best for navigati on related tasks. T he following types of request are recognized:
o Addresses
o Points of interest
o City, states
o Airports
o Intersections
I noticed there are stars next to some re staurants I hav e viewed or saved. Ho w is popularity rated?
Popularity is calculated by the user-generated ratings, av eraged by conside ring the scores of the rati ngs and the numb er
of users that have rated the location. A location accrues points base d on how ma ny stars it is given by Scout users.
When a location consistently achieves above-average rating s, its popularity cou nt increases. Negative rati ngs lowe r the
popularity count of the location.
How long are ratings kept?
Ratings and reviews expire after two years.
