Tech 21, the Company
VT Bass 500, an Overview
Tech 21, Inc., was formed by a guitarist possessing the unusual combination of a trained ear and electronics expertise. In 1989, B. Andrew Barta incorporated Tech 21 and made his unique invention commercially available to players and studios around the world. His highly-acclaimed SansAmp™ pioneered Tube Amplifier Emulation in professional applications for recording direct and performing live, and created an entirely new category of signal processing. While there have since been many entries into this niche, SansAmp continues to maintain its reputation as the industry standard.
With a full line of SansAmp models, Tech 21 also offers effect pedals and MIDI products, as well as “traditional” style amplifiers for guitar and bass. Each product is thoughtfully and respectfully designed by Andrew himself with the player in mind. Our goal is to provide you with flexible, versatile tools to cultivate, control, refine and redefine your own individual sound. Tech 21 takes great pride in delivering consistent professional quality sound, studio to studio, club to club, arena to arena.
The VT Bass 500 is a 500-Watt bass amp head with an all-analog SansAmp™ pre-amp and Class D power amp. Formulated with the same proprietary technology as our SansAmp Character Series VT Bass pedals, the VT Bass 500 offers vintage and modern bass tones, ranging from clean to thick flip-top funk, from indie rock snarl to deep tectonic distortion.
The unique, continuously-variable Character control moves seamlessly between decades of different voicings. It alters the entire sonic structure of the sound to achieve some of the most distinctive bass amp tones on the planet.
Drive adjusts the overall amount of gain and overdrive, similar to when the output of a tube amp is being pushed. A Blend control allows you to blend the direct instrument signal with the SansAmp Tube Amplifier Emulation circuitry. The Bite switch activates a presence boost, which tightens up the sound when you are in distorted settings. It also adds definition to your notes when the Drive is set for cleaner tones.
For studio and live applications, our proprietary, 100% analog SansAmp Tube Amplifier Emulation technology enables you to go straight into the mixer of a recorder or PA system via the XLR Direct Output.
The VT Bass 500 offers bootylicious tones for fearless pro players yearning to jump ship from the status quo.

FRONT PANEL
INPUT JACK
Faithful to the original designs of traditional tube amplifiers, this piezo-friendly 1/4" Input is high impedance 4.7 M. The typically additional low sensitivity input, however, is not needed due to the Pad switch. When the Pad switch is engaged, the input changes to low impedance, approx 10 K, which helps decrease line noise interference and protects the pre-amp from being overloaded by high output, active pickups.
PAD SWITCH
For active basses and cleaner tones, there is a -10dB Pad switch. To engage, push the switch in.
GUIDE TO CONTROLS
DRIVE
Adjusts the overall amount of gain and overdrive, similar to when the output section of a tube amp is being pushed. The first half of the rotation will increase the volume as well as the overdrive.
CHARACTER
Sweeps through an entire range of tonal possibilities. In addition to modifying the frequency response, the Character control also influences attack and drive. Therefore, you may need to adjust your gain and tone settings after tweaking the Character control.
Settings below 12 o’clock will give you the ‘70s powerhouse, the SVT. Around 12 o’clock will introduce you to the studio staple, the flip top. Above 12 o’clock increases the gain and crunch for less polite, modern
rock, indie bass sounds.
Full up gives you vintage and modern distorted bass tones.
MID, LOW and HIGH
The VT Bass 500 is designed with active controls, which boost and cut, rather than traditional passive controls which only cut. This effectively doubles many of the control’s capabilities, giving you a much larger range of adjustability and, ultimately, more variety. It should be noted that you need not necessarily set everything at max to achieve maximum results. As you experiment and become familiar with the interrelationship of the controls, you’ll easily be able to customize your own sounds.
The tone controls cut or boost ±18dB from unity gain (12 o’clock). Low is tuned to 55 Hz; High frequency is 3 kHz; Mid is selectable between 500 Hz (with the Shift switch in the in position) and 1K (with the Shift switch in the out position).
BLEND
Allows you to blend the direct instrument signal with SansAmp Tube Amplifier Emulation circuitry. In most cases, you will probably have this set at maximum (100% SansAmp). For certain applications, however, such as an ultra-transparent sound or for use with piezo pickup-equipped instruments, you may want to blend-in the direct signal to achieve your desired sound. Note Tube Amplifier Emulation circuitry is bypassed (affecting Drive, Character and Bite). However, the Mid, Low, High, Level and input Pad remain active.
:
When Blend is at minimum, the SansAmp
LEVEL
Acts as a master volume and is interactive with the Drive control. For clean sounds, set Level at max and control the overall level with the Drive control. For dirty sounds, use Drive to set up the overall amount of distortion and Level for the overall output.
BITE SWITCH
Engaged (in position), Bite activates a presence boost. This tightens up the sound when you are in distorted settings and adds definition to your notes in cleaner settings (when Drive is set below 12 o’clock).
LOOP SWITCH
Engages when the switch is in the in position.
SEND and RECEIVE (Effects Loop)
1/4” Send unbalanced line-level output; 1/4” Receive unbalanced line-level input.
HEADPHONE
1/4” headphone output. Mutes the power amp. NOTE: For best results, we recommend using stereo headphones rated at 32. Otherwise, performance may be compromised by efficiency loss. Also be sure the Level control is turned down to reduce the risk of hearing damage.

Page 7
SansAmp XLR DI Out
For recording, the SansAmp XLR output is like having a built-in direct box. You can
go direct to the board and get the same sound you hear coming out of the speakers right onto tape or disc. The SansAmp circuitry not only captures the warm, rich, natural harmonics and sweet overdrive characteristics inherent to tube amplifiers, its speaker emulation encompasses all aspects of multiply-miked tube amp rigs.
For live gigs, you can use this output direct into the PA system and you won’t need a microphone in front of the amp. And you won’t have to subject the audience to sterile, muddy, or boomy bass tones that are associated with typical direct boxes.
XLR Pad Switch
Allows you to connect the VT Bass 500 via the XLR Output to other equipment with different input level requirements:
0dB (out position): Line-level output.
-20dB (in position): Pads down the line-level signal by 20dB.
VOLTAGE SELECTOR SWITCH
Be sure the voltage selector switch is set in the correct position to match the local AC Mains voltage BEFORE you plug in the AC power cord. Use a flathead screwdriver to slide the switch to the proper position:
100-120V: to the LEFT 220-240V: to the RIGHT
Ground Lift
Connects or disconnects the ground circuits between the XLR Output of the amp and the mixer. We recommend starting with the ground lifted. If necessary, connect the ground by pushing the button in.
USE WITH ACTIVE BASSES
Active electronics have higher output and typically generate more noise. To compensate, we recommend engaging the input Pad. Additionally, experiment with using flat EQ settings on your instrument and/or decreasing the Drive, Character and High controls.
REAR PANEL
FUSE
Replace with similar type and same value:
100V - 120V units: use T 6.3 A 220V - 240V units: use T 3.15A
IMPORTANT REMINDER: Fuse holder located inside A/C cord receptacle. You must disconnect and remove power cord to change fuse.
WORLDWIDE POWER SUPPLY
The VT Bass 500 can be operated on voltages ranging from 100-250VAC, 50/60 Hz. Be sure the voltage selector switch is set in the correct position to match the local AC Mains voltage before you plug in the AC power cord.
THERMAL SPEED CONTROL FAN
The fan is thermally-controlled and will turn on automatically when needed. In the event of overheating, there is a heat protection circuit which will automatically shut down the unit. Normal operation will resume when the heat dissipates. Note: direct sunlight may contribute to overheating.
NOTE: Be sure there is ventilation on all sides of the unit and the vent openings on the sides, as well as the back, are not obstructed to restrict the flow of air to the heatsinks.
SPEAKON®SPEAKER OUTPUTS
Wired in parallel. These high quality plugs lock securely to ensure maximum power transfer and provide fool-proof connections. Total minimum impedance: 4. 500W RMS @ 4; 300W RMS @ 8.
NOTE: converters as they are not rated to handle 500W reliably. It could cause intermittent signal and may damage either/both the amp and your speaker cabinet.
Due to the high power of the amp, we do not recommend using 1/4” jack
