changed t he way studio engine ers and audiophi les alike chose to ex perience high quali ty audio. The Tannoy HPD Ser ies quickly bec ame some of
the most be loved Hi-Fi loudsp eakers of all time.

More than ju st an homage its pre decessor, the CANTER BURY Dual Concentric Hi -Fi Loudspeaker fu rther elevates t he Tannoy HPD her itage of
outst andingly transp arent perfor mance via the impleme ntation of new, upscal ed drivers and com ponents – techno logy that was unavailable
at the time. Si mply put, the CANTER BURY delivers legen dary HPD perf ormance to a new genera tion of music a cionados.

Unpacking

Examin e all pieces of packi ng material and inspe ct the carto n for signs of exte rnal damage. If there i s evidence of excess ive damage to
the packa ging and resultin g damage to the loudspe aker, inform the carr ier and supplier imm ediately. Always keep th e packing in such
circums tances for subs equent examinati on.

Unfaste n the bottom of the c arton. Fold the en d leaves out of the way and rem ove the 4 corner pack ing pieces to reveal the p linth and bottom
of the louds peaker cabinet. Lo cate and carefu lly remove the access ories pack from t he carton.

Turn the car ton and loudspeaker o ver so that the cabine t now stands on the  oor ins ide the carton. L ift the cart on upwards to reveal
the loudspeaker.

Positioning

Locate the l oudspeakers so tha t the favourite liste ning position is app roximately 15° from the a xes of the cabinet s. The axes of both ca binets
should inte rsect at a point s lightly in front of t he listening posit ion. Remember that t he proximity of th e loudspeakers to wal ls and corners
will a ect the s ound. Some expe rimentation wil l probably be need ed to  ne -tune the stereo i mage depth and low fr equency sound qualit y.
Close to wall p ositions and room c orners have the e ect of i ncreasing very low f requency sou nd energy. Re ective adjace nt walls may upset the
stereo im age by causing unwant ed re e ctions.

In order to e xperience the be st acoustic per formance and fu lly realise their exc eptional stereo i mage depth capabi lities, the loudspeakers
should ide ally be used at least 1m fr om any sidewall or re ect ive surface and at le ast 0.5 m away from a rear wa ll.

Insert s are provided in th e base of the speaker s for down spikes that g ive maximum stabi lity. The spikes prov ided should be scr ewed into the
base of the l oudspeakers. Whe n the loudspeaker is ins talled in its upr ight position, the s pikes should pass be tween the weave of your c arpet to
contac t the  oo r beneath.

Adjust the s pikes for maximum s tability, then tig hten the lock nuts  rmly, but wi thout using undue f orce.

For polish ed wooden  oors and other de licate surfac es, metal cups are p rovided to place und er the spikes.

Connection

Consult the p roduct speci  catio n section withi n this manual as this clea rly shows the accept able power range for am pli er ma tching to your
speakers . As with all loudspe aker systems, the powe r handling is a func tion of voice coil therm al capacity. Care sh ould be taken to avoid
overdriv ing any ampli er, as this will caus e output overload r esulting in ‘clippin g’ or distortio n within the outp ut signal. This can ca use damage
to the speake rs if done for any ex tended period . Generally an ampli  er of hig her power that is runni ng hard, but free of d istortion, will pose less
risk of damag e to the loudspeaker tha n a lower power ampli er continually c lipping. Remember a lso that a high powered am pli er r unning at
less than 90 % of output power gene rally sounds a great d eal better than a lower p owered example st ruggling to achieve 100 %.

Always use t he best quality o f cable available wi thin your budget. Hi gh quality audio s ignals passing fr om the ampli er to the loudspe aker are
unusual in t heir demands on the c able. Wide dynamic ra nge and wide bandwi dth informatio n has to coexist wit h the ability to tr ansmit peak
current s of at least 10 amps, wit hout incurring a ny loss or signal impai rment. We would recom mend that you always kee p the cable runs the
same leng th for each speaker. Reme mber that cable cons truction c an a ec t the sound qualit y so be prepared to e xperiment to  nd a cable t hat
suits you r ear and audio syst em.

First li nk the HF+ terminal to th e LF+ terminal and HF- te rminal to the LF- term inal, using the link s provided in the acce ssories pack.
The posit ive (plus) terminal on the a mpli e r left channel (marke d + or coloured red) mu st be connecte d to the positive HF ter minal on the left
speaker. The lef t speaker is the one o n the left as you lo ok at the stereo pair f rom your listenin g position. The neg ative (minus) terminal on th e
ampli er lef t channel (marked - or colo ured black) must be c onnected to the ne gative HF terminal on t he left speaker.

Repeat thi s connection pr ocess for the right s peaker. Remember that th e positive (+ or red) on the amp li er mu st be connecte d to the positive
(+ or red) on the spe aker and the negative (- or bla ck) to negative. Sele ct a signal source, su ch as a CD player, switch on the ampli er and slowly
turn up the vo lume control to chec k that both loudspe akers are reproduc ing bass and treble i nformation.

Earth C onnection:

To optimise per formance fu rther, use a shielded o r screened loud speaker cable in ord er to reduce unwanted r adio frequenc y interference.
The scre ening terminatio n should be connec ted to the earth or g round (white) terminal o n the loudspeaker and t o the ground or earth
connec tion on the ampli er. Alterna tively, if you are not using a s creened louds peaker cable but wis h to utilise the ear thing facilit y, run a singl e
cable be tween the loudsp eaker and ampli er earth ter minals.

Bi-wire Mode

Bi-ampin g extends the pri nciple of bi-wiri ng one stage fur ther. In this connec tion option, sepa rate power ampli ers are us ed for bass and
treble sig nals in each loudspe aker. Four mono (or two ster eo) ampli e rs of the same ty pe are required fo r a stereo pair of lou dspeakers.

If two ste reo ampli ers are used, it i s recommended tha t one ampli er supply bass in formation to lef t and right loudsp eakers and the othe r,
the trebl e information. It i s important not t o use the link cables o n the terminal pane l, otherwise amp li er dam age may result.

If your ampl i er is not e quipped with t wo sets of outpu t terminals, twis t the Left LF+ (po sitive) and the Lef t HF+ (positive) together at the
ampli er end of the c ables. Connec t these to the ampli er Lef t channel positi ve terminal marked + (plu s) or coloured red. Twist t he Left
LF- (negativ e) and the HF- (ne gative) cables toge ther and connec t them to the ampli er Lef t channel negative te rminal marked - (minus)
or coloured black.

At the loudsp eaker end, connect t he cables labelle d Left LF+ and Lef t LF- to the left h and loudspeaker LF ter minals, ensuring th at you note the
polarit y markings on the c able sheathing. Th en proceed to conne ct the Left HF+ a nd Left HF- to the HF t erminals on the same l oudspeaker.

Repeat thi s process to connec t the right hand lou dspeaker to the ampli  er righ t channel output , once again ensuring t hat polarity is
correct throughout.

Bi-amp Mode

Treble Adjustment

Each loud speaker is  tted with two c ontrols located o n the front ba e beneath the de tachable grille. T hese high curren t switch block s are
labelled R OLL OFF and ENERGY. They can be us ed to compensate f or the varied acous tic character istics of liste ning rooms. The controls should
be adjust ed with the ampli er tone co ntrols in the ‘ at’ or uncom pensated positi on. Each loudspea ker should be adjuste d individually.
Rotating t he ampli er balance contro l, to select  rst one loud speaker and then the ot her, most easily achieve s this.

The Energ y control has  ve positions. I t allows the output o f the high frequenc y compression d rive unit to be incre ased or decreas ed from the
linear or ‘ at’ po sition over a frequ ency band from a pproximately 1 kHz to 27 k Hz. The Roll O control has  ve positi ons (+2, level, -2, -4 and

-6 dB per oc tave) and provides ad justment at ext reme high freque ncies from 5 kHz to 30 kH z.

The Energ y control has a shelvi ng e e ct whereas the ro ll o contr ol increases or de creases the slop e of the extreme h igh frequenc y response.
The  attest, mo st linear respons e from the loudspe aker will be obtaine d with both contro ls set at the LEVEL pos ition, and this position should
be used fo r initial listenin g tests. If the over all quality of the hi gh frequency s ound seems too pro minent the –1.5 or –3 positions for t he Energy
control sh ould be tried. If th e sound appears su bdued in the trebl e region +1.5 or +3 sett ings may be prefer red. Once the energ y control
setti ng has been estab lished the Roll O control c an be adjusted to red uce or slightly incr ease the extre me high frequenc y content if neces sary.

Remember t he changes that ca n be made by moving eithe r control from on e position to anothe r are subtle. They may not e asily be heard if
the progr amme material has ver y little content in t he frequency b and under considera tion. Choose a well- balanced piece of musi c with a full
spect rum of sound. The cor rect sett ing will be found whe n the loudspeaker s are no longer evident a nd only the musical p erformance is heard.

Cabinet Care

The cabin et is  nish ed to exacting s tandards utilisin g carefully sele cted solid hard wood mouldings and m atching real wood vene ers. The wood
should onl y be cleaned with a dr y cloth or with a lig ht application of q uality non-sili cone furnitur e polish such as the spe cialist Tannoy wax
supplie d in the accessory p ack. Take care not to get po lish on the grille clo th or lacquered fr ont ba e.

In common wi th all solid wood fu rniture, expos ure to extremes o f heat, cold and var ying humidity w ill cause the wood to e ase slightly.
Therefo re it is recommende d that the loudspea ker is protected f rom environment al extremes to gu ard against any such o ccurrence. Any wood
will chang e colour when subjec ted to the UV conten t of ambient light and dr y out over time, hence t he need to ‘feed ’ the wood with the wa x
provided periodically.

Grille Removal

Special ac oustically-tr ansparent cloth is us ed in the grilles. Howe ver, for ultim ate  deli ty, the enthusiast wi ll  nd it is be st to use these
loudspea kers with their gri lles removed durin g listening. Grille r emoval is also neces sary for access to t he front panel con trols.

The fron t grille is removed usin g the key provided. Turn the ke y in the key slot and pull the b ottom of the grill e away from the cabin et. The grille
will drop do wn from its uppe r location. Take care not to da mage the wooden lower p art of the cabine t. To replace the grille eng age the top of
the grille i nto the slot in the cab inet and push the gri ll into the recess and l ock in position.
