Introduction

The Symbol Mobile Gateway (SMG) is a rugged computer designed to be used as a platform for in-vehicle communications and connectivity by Symbol portable data terminals. It provides wireless network communications and RS-232 flexibility.
Description

Operating Environment

The SMG supports a DOS operating environment using industry standard protocols. It is available with either an 8088 or 80386SX processor.

Power Requirements

12 to 24 volts DC.

The SMG supports:

•Integrated GPS receivers
•Industrial PC keyboards
•Point-to-point 2.4 GHz LAN spread spectrum
•Integrated Wireless Wide Area Network radio modems.

Inactivity Monitor

Shuts down the SMG when the vehicle has been turned off for a period of time.

Input/Output Ports
COM1 - Dedicated comm port for Symbol portable data terminal charging and communications cradle. The VCD 3112 cradle supports the PDT 3100 data terminal. The VCD 4612 cradle supports the PPT 4600 portable pen terminal (RS-232 standard).
COM2 - Accommodates RS-232 peripheral devices. Keyboard - IBM-AT (or XT) compatible port (depending on
model). WLAN Antenna - for wireless local area communications
between Symbol portable data terminals and the SMG. 12/24VDC - 4-pin power connector with chassis ground. You may also have up to two of the following options:
COM3 - Additional RS-232 port. COM4 - Additional RS-232 port. WWAN Antenna - Wireless Wide Area Network
communications. GPS Antenna - Global Positioning System for tracking
vehicles and location assistance.
A PCMCIA option which supports two Type II or one Type III and one T ype II car d for the Symbol Micr o Access Point and/or other PCMCIA cards is available on SMG386 configurations only.
