1 GENERAL
The Basile 2600 Multifunction Printer is a microprocessor controlled device designed to acquire C out on thermal paper in real time or saved in the internal memory be unload later on.
The 2600 Multifunction Printer is also provided with a RS232C connector, located on the back panel, in order to route Data to PC in real time or to unload them later on. Basile WIN-DAS software is required (IBM compatible, Windows 95 or 3.1).
This makes the 2600 be a REAL MULTI-PURPOSE FLEXIBLE INTERFACE between the instruments linked to it and any IBM or compatible PC.
Each channel can acquire Data from instruments which supply a Counting or Timing TTL signals such as :
And a number of other Basile instruments or other makes.
OUNTING OR TIMING DATA OF SIX INDEPENDENT CHANNELS. The Data can be printed-
7550 Passive Avoidance 6650 Hole Board 7370 Plantar Test 7360 Tail Flick 7250 Hot Plate 7600/50 Rota Rod for Mice (requires 5 channels) 7700/50 Rota Rod for Rats (requires 4 channels) 7402 Activity cages 7210 Analgesy-Meter (model provided with optical switch)
The 2600 Data print-out represents Counting or Timing events. Counting may be suitable for Hole Board, Activity cages, etc, Timing for Plantar Test, Hot Plate, Rota Rod, etc.
Counting mode results are printed-out at preset intervals, whereas Timing mode results can
Page 4
be set for single pulse or cumulative operation. Cumulative time interval are referred to a preset interval.
The 2600 includes a Graphic display, a 4 button keyboard and the printer proper. The Graphic display monitors all available commands settable by the operator by simply
acting on the 4 button keyboard located just below it. A red push-button switch located on the left top of the front panel, if depressed, push the
chart a step forward.
1.1 CONNECTING AN INSTRUMENT TO THE SERIAL INPUT
Besides the described features, the RS232C input can accept signal from instruments already provided with Serial connector like the Basile Plethysmometer 7140.
A data string, for instance of a 7140 linked to the 2600 Serial connector, is directly printed on the paper with indication of the corresponding address of the instrument which generates it.
This string does not interfere with any of the 6 available input channels which remain fully operative.
Obviously, when the RS232C connector is used for linking another instrument (7140), the PC communication can not be activated.
The instrument connected to the Multifunction Printer via the RS232C input, in our case the Plethysmometer 7140, must be set in order to channel output Data to its Serial path (see corresponding Instruction Manuals).
Page 5
1.2 2600 INPUT CONNECTOR
The input 15 pin Delta connector for linking external TTL signals to the 2600 Multifunction Printer is located on the rear panel of the unit.
The 2600 Multifunction Printer is generally purchased for specific instruments and it comes already provided with suitable connection cables for these apparatus. In case the researcher has to make out his/her own input connections, please pay attention to the following considerations.
The TTL signal applied is active on the low level which corresponds to Zero Volt. To make activated the 2600 ON input channels it is sufficient a make contact (short circuit)
between the corresponding channel connector pin and the Common. In this way, the internal pull-up, stand-by at 5 Volt, drops to active TTL low level ( 0 Volt ).
Common = pin 1 Channel 1 = pin 10 Channel 2 = pin 3 Channel 3 = pin 11 Channel 4 = pin 4 Channel 5 = pin 12 Channel 6 = pin 5 VDD = Pin 9
Pin 9 is the positive 5 Volt (VDD) of the Multifuncion Printer power supply; be careful not to short pin 1 (Common) and pin 9 (+5V) . Positive 5 Volt may be useful to feed an external inverter in case an applied input signal is operative on the high TTL level (level 1 = 5V) instead of Common level.
Page 6
2 INSTALLATION OF THE 2600 MULTIFUNCTION PRINTER
Once the instrument has been unpacked, check the completeness of the shipment, packing list to hand, and visually inspect the instrument parts soon.
If some part is damaged or, after having tested the complete assembled instrument, if fails to meet the rated performances, notify our company immediately.
Before applying power, consider on the back side of the 2600 the Power Module which includes the Mains Switch, the Fuse Holder, the Voltage Selector an the Inlet Connector of the Mains Cord.
Pay particular attention to the Mains Voltage set and shown in the small flag of the Power Module.
Before any operation of Fuse replacing or Mains Voltage modification Remove the Mains Cord.
Make sure that only fuses with the required rated current and of the specified types are used for replacement.
2.1 SWITCHING ON
Page 7
Turn the Multifuncion Printer ON by acting on the Mains Switch placed on the back side of the instrument, the software takes some seconds to perform a complete checking of any electronic circuit, in the meantime a mice picture is monitored and then the display shows the previous experiment setting.
The previous setting configuration, the Date and the Time are saved in the internal memory of the microprocessor which is fed by a couple of watch type batteries.
In case the following message appears :
The two batteries are out of order; they must be replaced (see page 21) and the Date and the Time must be set again.
2.2 PAPER LOADING
Lift up the lid of the thermal paper receptacle (on the left side of the top panel) by lifting it up.
Page 8
Remove the run-out chart and bobbin. Place a fresh roll into the Printer block with the sensitive side (shine side) down. Chart
shine side must be facing you once the paper comes out.
V-cut , with a pair of scissors, the beginning of the chart roll and insert it into the printer narrow rectangular slot located at the back of the printer body.
With instrument ON, depress the red PAPER FEED push-button switch placed on the top panel (left side) until the chart comes out.
Shut the lid. Exert care the paper pass through the rectangular slot located on the lid. If printing does not take place, check that the paper roll has not been loaded upside down;
the thermal sensitive side is one only.
3 DISPLAY AND KEYBOARD
The Graphic display is located at the right side of the instrument and the keyboard is just below it.
Page 9
The keyboard consists of 4 soft push-button switches marked F1, F2, F3 and F4.
The meaning of them depends on software sub-routine in which we are working
AND on
the display corresponding label just above its key.
For instance, the F2 key, while in the Main Menu is labelled FNC (Function menu), once depressed, it acquires the meaning of CLK (Clock). The clock is the software level where the operator can set the Time and the Date.
The F4 key, in most cases, is labelled ESC (Escape); it enables the operator to abandon a just set wrong selection or to leave the sub-routine in which he/she is working in order to go back to the previous software level.
The display labels are, for obvious reasons, shortened. Please refer to the following list :
ALL all (Serial + Printer) B-R baud rate CLK clock setting CNT Counting mode DAT Date setting DIS display contrast ESC escape FNC function menu FTR feature setting MEM memory menu NO no NUL annulment OFF channel inactivation ON channel activation OK confirmation OPR operation channel menu (timing or counting mode) OUT output menu (path and features) PAT output path (PC and/or printer) PRN Data printing selection REP automatically repeat the previous channel mode RES Data memory reset
Page 10
SER serial (PC) path TIM Time setting TMR Timing mode VW Data view YES yes I-P Intermediate Printing
In almost any software menu, the intermediate display level, in the middle of the screen,
SHOWS THE LAST RECEIVED DATUM IN REAL TIME, no matter if it is saved in the memory only or
Printed and/or sent to PC. This Datum is completed with the experiment feature (sequence number, sex, etc.) if preset.
3.1 MAIN MENU
The Main Menu shows the Ugo Basile logo and, at the bottom of it, the boxes referred to the soft keys respectively labelled : OPR, FNC, MEM & ESC.
The F4 ESC key, if depressed more times while in the Main Menu, generates a loop showing, in sequence : Basile release of the installed software, selected output path, channel status and mode, Date & Time, real time Data in progress of each channel and the mice picture.
The selected output path and the Channel status & mode are reported in the upper side of the graphic display.
PRN and/or SER labels indicate that the corresponding output path has been set. PRN means real time Data printing and SER means that the serial communication to PC has been activated.
Please note that any received Datum may be printed in real time or not; in any case it is saved in the internal microprocessor memory, able to store up to about 500 measurement strings (each string includes Data and Time & Date indication).
The activated channel status is displayed following path indication (PRN and/or SER). The small type letter at the foot of the channel labels indicate the mode setting : “t” means Timer, “c” is Counter and “ct” means Cumulative Timer.
The Counting mode means to record the total number of events in a preset printing interval (Hole Board, Activity Cage, etc). Timing mode means to record the duration of a single pulse (Passive Avoidance, Plantar Test, etc). Cumulative Timer means the sum of all the latencies occurred during the preset interval (many Behavioural experiments, Cumulative Rota Rod trials, etc).
Page 11
The activated channels are listed with real time Data indication in the last step of the Main Menu loop, just before going back to the mice picture.
The Data string shows, for any activated channel, in order from left to right: the input channel number among the 6 available, the Datum itself in 5 digits (3 integers and 2 decimals for Timing mode and 5 integers figures for Counting mode) and the elapsed time expressed in minutes (2 digits) from the beginning of the trial in progress.
Moreover the Data string may also show some experiment features (animal number, sex, etc.) if preset.
These real time Data indication is updated at intervals of about 1.5 seconds. In case the researcher likes to follow very fast events, he/she has to set a configuration in which, the last received Datum appears in the middle of the display.
The LAST RECEIVED DATUM IS SHOWN in intermediate display section in the most of the working menus and it is updated very fast.
3.2 QUICK SETTING OF THE 2600 MULTIFUNCTION PRINTER.

The 2600 Multifunction Printer can do much more of what listed in the table, please refer to the indicated manual pages for more information.
3.3 OPERATION (OPR) MENU
Page 13
From the Main Menu depress the F1 OPR .
By the F1 REP the operator can repeat the previous experiment having the same configuration. This saves time and reduce the risk of a wrong setting. This operation ALSO
RESETS
the printing interval (and the corresponding counter) in case it is already in
progress.
IMPORTANT: Please note that, if a previous session has been aborted by the OFF key before its programmed end, the REP key does not work and the following experiment should be planed again.
By the F3 I-P key, an Intermediate Printing will be carried out. It is referred to the set channels, the Data shown are updated on the last minute, and the time indicated is the elapsed interval since the session has been started.
By the F2 CON key the Researcher can set an experiment with a fresh configuration (different than the previous session).
At this point the display will ask the operator to set how many channels he desires to switch On.
The display will show :
By the F1 UP arrow the operator can scan, in a defined loop, all the 2600 available channels and to read their status (including ch. Features, if set) On the screen.
The F1 UP key, at the end of the 6 channel loop, shows the label “ALL” in which the operator can set all the channels with the same configuration instead of wasting time in setting them step by step.
For any highlighted channel (or ALL), the researcher can select F2 ON in order to have the channel activated or F3 OFF to turn it Off.
By the F3 (OFF) key a cage may be inactivated. If a session, related to this cage, is in progress, the corresponding experiment will be aborted.
Once the F2 ON key has been depressed, the Display will show :
The fresh F3 CNT key enables to set the channel in question (displayed on the screen) for Counting mode, the F4 TMR key for Timing configuration.
Page 14
A
If F3 CNT key for Counting mode has been set the display will ask the operator to set the related Printing Interval.
ct on the F1 UP & F2 DOWN keys to set the Interval expressed in minutes and
highlighted in the middle of the monitor.
Confirm the selection made by the F3 OK key .
The F4 NUL key aborts this software level and the program goes back to the previous menu.
The operator can now select if to have an experiment of a certain number of trials (for instance 3 print-out reports of 10 minutes each) and then to switch the channel OFF or to leave the Data acquiring untimed.
The untimed mode, settable by F4 NUL key, leaves the experiment go on with regular print-out results at preset intervals since the channel is manually switched OFF.
The F1 and F2 arrow keys, enable to set the number of trials at the end of which the channel is automatically turned OFF. Confirm the choice with F3 OK key.
TO REPEAT THE SESSION, DEPRESS, FROM THE OPR MENU THE F2 REP KEY.
The Interval period starts exactly at the instant when OK or NUL keys have been depressed. if this operation is performed with a Printing Interval in progress, it will automatically reset.
Going back to the OPR menu, the operator can set the Timing mode by the F4 TMR key. The operator is required to set the channel for Cumulative measurements or not. Answer with F3 YES or F4 NO keys.
In case of Cumulative Timing mode, the researcher has to set the printing interval expressed in minutes and, if desired, the number of trials, as already described above for the Counting configuration.
Remind that the F3 OK or F4 NUL keys start the Interval period exactly at this time. The interval period is automatically reset if already in progress.
We remind that the Status of any activated Channel is displayed in the upper part of the monitor.
Page 15
The above operations (channel ON/OFF and TMR or CNT mode) must be repeated for any channel in which the operator is interested. To set all the channel with the same configuration is advisable to select the ALL condition which allows to save time and reduces the risk of mistakes.
Once an experiment is over, for instance a trial of 6 sessions of 10 minutes each, the operator, instead of wasting time in setting it again, can simply enter the OPR menu, select the channel in question and depress the F2 REP key. A fresh trial, identical to the previous one, will start exactly at this time (an experiment already in progress will be automatically reset).
TO SWITCH A CHANNEL OFF IT IS NECESSARY TO SELECT THE OPR MENU, TO SET WITH THE UP
ARROWS THE DESIRED CHANNEL NUMBER AND TO DEPRESS THE F3 OFF KEY.
3.4 HOW TO SET THE DATA OUTPUT PATH
If no path is set, the acquired Data are saved in the Multifunction Printer memory only. In order to set real time printing or to enable the real time or remote communication with the PC, depress, from the Main Menu, F2 FNC key followed by the F1 OUT key. The display shows :
Page 16
Select now the F1 PAT key; the display will show :
The F1 PRN key enables the operator to print in real time the Data of the activated channels.
PRN status and any activated channel are displayed at the top of the monitor.
Once F1 PRN key has been depressed and real time printing has been set, the operator may acquire the intermediate Data of the activated channels which are displayed at the top of the screen.
By the F3 YES key the INTERMEDIATE PRINTING takes place and it does not interfere with the Data and the Interval in progress. Select this option any time an INTERMEDIATE DATA PRINTING is required.
By the F4 NO key the researcher can avoid the Intermediate Printing and leave this subroutine. Anyway the real time printing is already set.
The F2 SER key allows direct connection with the PC for exporting Data in real time or in a remote condition. Serial communication between the 2600 and IBM or compatible PC is owned by the Basile WIN-DAS software (not supplied with the instrument). Ask for a demo diskette.
In case an instrument, for instance a Basile Plethysmometer 7140, is linked to the serial connector of the Multifunction Printer, bear in mind that the Plethysmometer must be set in order to channel Data into its serial path. In this configuration PC communication

is not possible.
The F3 ALL key enables the researcher to select both output paths simultaneously, the Printer and the Serial.
The 2600 output path status is highlighted in the upper part of the display by lighting PRN and/or SER labels.
In case the operator wants to SWITCH OFF one of the previously activated choice (Printer and/or Serial path), it is necessary to enter again the PAT menu and depress the F4 ESC key, selecting no option.
When the SER or ALL functions have been activated, the PC must be correctly connected to the 2600; if everything is OK the display shows the activated communication with the following message :
From this menu the operator can set the address of the Multifunction Printer which sends Data into PC and the communication speed (Baud Rate).
The default address is 01. Default Baud Rate is 300.
In case the factory set parameters are OK, as it happens in most cases, the operator can simply depress the F4 ESC key in order to leave this menu and the following setting is not necessary.
To modify the Address, if necessary, press the F1 ADD key, select with the arrows the desired value between 01 and 99 and then depress the F4 ESC key.
To change the factory set Baud Rate depress the F2 B-R key. Select by the arrows the desired value in the loop which includes 300 - 600 - 1200 - 2400 & 4800 Bps. Then depress the F4 ESC key.
The Baud Rate must be identical to what set in the Basile WIN-DAS software. Basile WIN-DAS software has been designed for IBM or compatible PC provided with
Windows 95 or 3.1 operating system.
3.5 HOW TO SET A CUSTOMISED EXPERIMENTAL CONFIGURATION
Page 18
From the Main Menu, depress the F2 FNC key followed by the F1 OUT key. The display will show :
Depress now the F2 FTR key, the display shows:
The FTR (Feature) menu enables to personalise the basic Datum, consisting of a Counting or of a Timing event, by adding some information :
Sequence number Experiment number Sex of the animal Left or right paw (not in the “ct” mode)
The operator is required to answer Yes or No at the question “CHANGE FEATURE ?” which is referred to the channel (ch. 3 in our case) displayed in the intermediate level of the monitor.
To scan all the available channels, just act on the UP and Down keys and read, in the intermediate display level, how, at the moment, that channel is set. The intermediate string of the monitor shows the number of the channel in question, the Data format, the interval indication and the feature already set.
This loop includes all the available channels and a seventh choice labelled “A” (ALL) which enables to set the all 6 channels with the same configuration instead of wasting time in setting each of them step by step.
Answer, for any channel which it is being used, YES if the corresponding configuration has to be modified and NO if it is OK.
To set features the researcher has to scan the whole loop which includes all the available selections; enter the information required step by step and confirm the highlighted value by depressing the F3 OK key. If one or more options have not to be considered, simply depress the F4 NUL key.
To ERASE one or more features previously set, it is required to enter this software level, to highlight the related label box and to depress the F4 NUL key.
By depressing the arrow keys shortly, the numerical value will increase or decrease of one step. By keeping them depressed longer, the selection can be made out at higher speed.
Page 19
The selected features will be kept in the memory even if the instrument is turned OFF.
Once answered Yes to the “CHANGE FEATURE ?” question, the display will show :
The first feature to be defined is the Sequence Number.
Use the F1 UP and F2 DOWN keys to set the desired Sequence Number (from 01 to
99) and then confirm it by depressing the F3 OK key.
The Sequence Number, shown in the Data string in the middle of the screen, will automatically increased by one figure at any subsequent measurement.
It trips once a Datum has been fully acquired and recorded. The intermediate level display string shows the fresh Sequence Number taken into consideration for next measurement.
To avoid the Sequence Number selection, just depress the F4 NUL key.
IMPORTANT. When the operator starts a fresh experimental session, he/she can continue from the Sequence Number reached at the end of the previous trial or enter this software level and set a new Sequence Number, for example starting again from 01.
Once the above selection has been confirmed by F3 OK key or avoided by F4 NUL key the display automatically propose the second step of the Feature loop :
Experiment or Group Number. From 1 to 9.
Confirm selection by F3 OK or avoid it with F4 NUL key.
Selection of the sex, M (male) or F (Female), of the animal which has to be processed.
Confirm with F3 OK or avoid with F4 NUL.
In Cumulative Timing mode the F3 and F4 keys close the feature loop and the program goes back to the previous sub-routine.
Selection of the R (right) and L (left) paw, of the animal which has to be measured:
PS - This option is not available, for technical reasons, when operating in Timing Cumulative mode.
Page 20
Close the Feature loop by confirming the choice with F3 OK key or by avoiding it with F4 NUL key
The software goes automatically back to the Main Menu.

indication.
By depressing the F3 MEM key the display shows :
The F1 VW key enables the operator to visualise on the display the Data stored in the memory, at each Datum is added the corresponding Time & Date of when it was acquired.
Use the UP and DOWN arrow keys to scan the Data: By momentarily depressing these keys the displayed Datum shown will increase or decrease of just one measurement. By keeping these keys depressed longer, the Data will be scanned at higher speed.
The F4 ESC has the usual function of abandoning a wrong selection or recalling the previous software level.
The F2 OUT key enables the researcher to export to the PC or to PRINT memory Data previously collected; the display will show :
t this point the operator has to confirm if he/she is interested to combine each Datum with the related Date & Time or not. Answer with F3 YES or F4 NO keys.
Page 22
If the researcher has selected the combined printing of Data with the corresponding Time & Date, this information appears on a second line:

In case the operator wants to interrupt the print-out response of the stored Data, he/she has to depress the F4 ESC key for at least one second.
BEFORE STARTING A NEW EXPERIMENTAL SESSION, we suggest the operator to pay attention to the following points :
The memory may contain some Data saved after a previous trial. If it is the case, in
order not to further consider them, enter the proper software level and RESET the memory.
In case the animal sequence number has been set, it may be necessary to modify the
animal number, which otherwise starts from the last tested animal number of previous experiment.
Going Back to the MEMORY menu, the F3 RES key enables the researcher to reset the Data stored in the memory. This command can be useful, for instance, before starting a new experimental session, if the operator prefers to delete the Data stored from previous trials.
The operator is now required to answer F3 YES or F4 NO to the question : ARE YOU SURE? This further question has been added to avoid accidental loss of all stored Data.
The Memory menu also automatically appears when the memory is fully loaded which means it has reached its maximum capability of about 500 lines.
If, while acquiring Data, happens to see on the display a “MEMORY FULL” message, the operator can act in three ways :
The researcher who is not interested in considering the Data saved in the memory, may
simply depress the F3 RES (Reset) key and confirm by answering YES to the question ARE YOU SURE ?
In case the Data saved in the memory are necessary, proceed in order to Print and/or
send them to PC as already explained in this chapter.
There is also the possibility to ignore the indication of Fully Loaded Memory and to go on
with the experiment by depressing the F4 ESC key. The Data onwards will not be saved. Consider that, in this case, the memory remains fully loaded and the display
Page 23
reminds it by showing the Full Memory message every time the 2600 is switched ON.
3.1 SETTING TIME & DATE
From the Main Menu depress in sequence the F2 FNC key followed by F2 once more (now labelled CLK). The display will show :
Select F1 TIM to set TIME. Use the F3 horizontal arrow key to highlight, on the related display string, the hour, minute, second or watch mode box which has to be modified.
Use now the UP and DOWN keys momentarily to increase or decrease the numerical value of one step, depress them longer for higher speed selection.
Remind also to set the Clock Mode where :
00 = 24 hour mode 01 = anti-meridian time 02 = post meridian time
Once the TIME setting is completed, depress the F4 ENT key which saves it and goes back to the Main Menu.
Follow the same procedure to set the Date, selecting the F3 DAT key. Enter also the day of the week :
01 = Monday 02 = Tuesday 03 = Wednesday
04 = Thursday 05 = Friday 06 = Saturday 07 = Sunday
Depress the F4 ENT key to confirm.
3.2 DISPLAY CONTRAST
To modify the display contrast, depress, from the Main Menu, the F2 FNC key, then the F3 DIS key. The display will show :
Page 24
Keep the F1 UP or F2 DOWN key depressed until the desired display contrast is reached. Be careful with the fact that the display brightness can slightly vary in the course of the time depending on the instrument temperature, if it is necessary retouch it.
The readability of the liquid crystal display depends on the angle of view, select the ideal contrast according to the height of the table, the operator’s distance and so on.
Leave this software menu by depressing the F4 ESC key which also saves the setting.
3.3 BATTERIES REPLACEMENT
In case the display shows :
The internal watch batteries must be replaced with similar ones.
Remove the mains cord. Open the top right panel of the 2600 by removing the 4 screws placed at its border.
Locate the batteries which are on the electronic boards and replace them with others of the same type.
Close the upper panel and set again Channel Configuration, Time and Date.
