Operating Instructions
Safety precautions
L Disconnect the power supply before
attempting any work on the sensor!
L During installation, the electrical wiring you
are connecting must be dead.
Therefore, switch off the power first and use
a voltage tester to make sure the wiring is off
circuit.
L Follow safety regulations!
L Observe the general installation conditions.
L Installing the sensor involves work on the
mains power supply.
This work must therefore be carried out professionally in accordance with national wiring
regulations and electrical operating conditions.
L Only select time and twilight setting with the
lens in place.

HBS 300 Highbay / HBS 200 Highbay product summary
Product description
HBS 300 Highbay / HBS 200 Highbay sensors
provide effective lighting control for applications
in high, open areas, such as warehouses.
The sensors are fitted with three pyroelectric
dual-element detectors and are suitable for a
wide range of installation heights of up to 12 m.
They can be fitted directly to a high-mounted
luminaire or junction box.

Information of site of installation
L The line of vision between the HBS 300 High-
bay / HBS 200 Highbay lens and the area it
covers must be clear and unobstructed.
L The sensor should be 2 to 2.5 m away from
heating / cooling supply ducts.
2.1
∂
The HBS 300 Highbay and HBS 200 Highbay
are generally mounted at a 1/2” knockout at the
end of a luminaire installed at high / normal
level. The sensor's lens should be mounted below the bottom edge of the luminaire.
L An installation height of up to 12 m is ideal.
L Sensor must be mounted on a firm surface.
2.2
∂
The EM 1 extender module is recommended if
the knockout at the end of the luminaire is more
than 1.27 cm from the lower edge of the luminaire (see Figure 2.2, page 3).
Wiring up HBS 300 Highbay / HBS 200 Highbay
Before installing, first switch OFF the power
supply and use a voltage tester to make sure
the circuit is dead.
The mains supply lead is a 3-core cable:
Black = Phase (L)
Blue = Neutral (N)
Violet = Load
If in doubt, identify the conductors with a
voltage tester or consult a qualified electrician.

Switching ON for the first time
When switching ON for the first time, the luminaire will come on for one minute. The luminaire
switches OFF if no motion is detected. If motion
is detected and the light-level setting is less
than ambient brightness, the luminaire will re-
Surge protection
The surge protection feature will reset the
sensor automatically after: power surges, power
outages, and power shortages. Surge protec-
main switched ON for the stay-ON time selected (at DIP switch). If ambient light level is
greater than the light level setting, the luminaire
will switch OFF regardless of whether any person is present or not.
tion protects the sensor if it is miswired as well.
If miswired, shut off power, correct the wiring,
and the sensor will then operate correctly.
Setting and starting up HBS 300 Highbay / HBS 200 Highbay
Test mode
L Make sure the sensor is in test mode.
- Set stay-ON time to at least 15 sec.
- Set light level to maximum (“day” setting,
light-level function overridden - factory
setting)
L Turn power ON at main switch (light switches
ON). After a warm up period of up to one
minute, lights will turn OFF if the sensor does
not detect motion.
L Walk into the sensor's line of vision, the light
should switch ON. The light should go out if
you remain still for 15 sec.

Operating HBS 300 Highbay / HBS 200 Highbay
The HBS 300 Highbay and HBS 200 Highbay
switch light ON automatically when they detect
the presence of persons and OFF again when
Light level function
The light level feature allows lighting to remain
OFF during daylight, regardless of occupancy.
A light level delay-off function prevents the
sensor from responding to temporary changes
in ambient light level. If ambient light level is
brighter than the level set, the sensor will wait
for 60 seconds before turning the light OFF.
- 16 -- 17 -
the area covered is vacated and the stay-ON
time has elapsed.
If motion is detected within this time, light will
stay ON. After no motion is detected for one
minute and the light level has been greater than
the target value, the lights will turn OFF and remain OFF until the daylight level drops below
the light level selected and motion is detected.
Light level
High
Light level: 2 (night) to 2000 (day) lux
Light-level teach mode
The light-level teach mode senses the level of
ambient light in the area covered and selects
this amount for the light-level setting.
The light-level function keeps the light switched
OFF during the day regardless of whether any
person is present or not. Daylight operation is
set at 2000 lux (factory setting). Night-time operation is set at 2 lux.
L Set light level to
L Ambient light level is memorised after 10 sec.
L This level remains memorised even after a
power failure if the potentiometer is set to
teach mode when the light is switched ON.

Stay-ON time is the period of time lights remain
ON after detecting the last movement. This time
can be set from 15 sec. to 30 min. Factory setting is 15 min.
Wireless interconnection by means of optional MF1 wireless module
An MF1 wireless group control module with
wireless group control capability can be added
to any HBS 300 Highbay or HBS 200 Highbay
sensor.

n Please only plug the module in with the mains
power supply switched OFF. (see Fig.)
n Only use genuine replacement parts.
n The wireless module must not be plugged in
when using the Install mode.

Wireless communication
STEINEL wireless lighting controllers are
grouped together through a DIP switch address.
When a wireless presence sensor in the group
detects a movement, all devices in that group
will be switched ON. For example, when a
sensor detects the presence of a person and
switches the light ON, this switching command
the ideal accessory for intelligently interconnecting high-bay sensors.
will be sent to all wireless devices in this group.
All these devices then switch the light ON. Light
only switches OFF when command signals stop
being sent to the group and the last device's
stay-ON time has elapsed. The switching signals are limited by the devices' wireless reach.
Setting and starting up RM 50 Highbay (MF1)
Groups
The 5 position DIP switch on all STEINEL wireless devices can be used for setting 32 different
addresses or groups.
All devices in a group must have the same DIP
switch setting. The ON switching commands
only apply within a group.

Light only switches OFF upon expiry of the
stay-ON time of the last wireless sensor in a
group within wireless reach. The switching
signal is limited by the devices wireless reach.
The wireless module operates as a receiver in
the idle state. It automatically switches over to
transmitter mode as soon as movement triggers
a switching operation in the HBS 200/300
Highbay.
Wireless communication troubleshooting
n Are the products you wish to connect set to
the same group address?
n Is the signal at the receiver too weak because
it is positioned too far away?
n Can the wireless signal leave the transmitter
and reach the receiver or is exposed to interference (metal enclosure etc)?
n Is there any interference from other transmit-
ters operating on the same frequency?
n Are other transmitters operating outside the
system which, although working on a different frequency, are doing so at very high
transmission power?
