SUBJECT: Installation Procedure for 401HH102 Pinion Seal
Shown below are instructions for the installation of the 401HH102 Pinion Seal. The pinion seal must be installed following these instructions to avoid seal damage or a mis-installed seal. A damaged or improperly installed seal can lead to premature failure of the seal causing lubrication leakage and possible bearing or component failure. Component failures from mis-installed seals are usually non-warrantable and cause downtime to the customer so installation is critical.
IMPORTANT: Oil seals can be easily damaged prior to installation. Use care when handling the new seal to prevent unnecessary damage or contamination. Leave the seal in its package until actual installation.
1. Carefully remove the old seal, being careful to not damage or gouge the machined surface of the bearing cage.
2. Clean the seal bore surface of the bearing cage, removing all contaminants, including all old RTV and any metal flakes.
3. Handling the new seal carefully, align the seal with the bearing cage and carefully insert.
CAUTION: In NO instance is the “CUP”area of the seal to be used or hit against when installing the seal. Use
only the “OUTER LIP” portion of the seal when doing the installation (see picture below). The seal will become distorted and seal failure or leakage is imminent if the seal is distorted in any manner.
Dana strongly recommends the use of seal installation tools! SEAL DRIVER KIT P/N: ZTSE4420 is available from your local OEM or tool suppliers.
4. Using the proper installation tools, drive the seal into the bearing cage until the outer lip of the seal bottoms out against the outer flange surface of the cage. When the seal lip is tight against the bearing cage surface, 360º around, the seal is properly installed. Do a final check of the outer seal area, in some cases a small bit of RTV may be visible at the lip.
