WARNI NG! Read a ll safety w arnings an d all instruc tions. Failu re to follow the warnings and

instructions may result in electric shock, fire and/or serio us injury.

Save a ll warnings and instructions fo r future re ference. The term "power tool" in the warnin gs refers to your m ains-operated (cor ded) pow er tool or battery-operated (cordl ess) powe r tool.

W ork Area Safety

a) Keep work area clea n and well lit. Cluttere d or dark areas invi te accide nts.

b) Do not operate pow er tools in explosive atmospher es, such as in the pre sence of flammable liq uids, gases or dust. P ower tools create sparks which may ignit e the dust or fumes.

c) Keep children and by standers away while operating a power to ol. Distractions can c ause you to lose control.

El ectrical S afety

a) Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. D o not use a ny adapter plu gs with earthed (grounded) power tools. U nmodified plugs and matching outlets w ill reduce

risk of electric shock.

b) Avoid body contact with earthe d or groun ded surfa ces, such as pipes, r adiators, r anges and refrigerators. There is an increase d risk of el ectric sho ck if your b ody is ea rthed or gr ounded. c) Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. W ater entering a pow er tool will increase

th e risk of el ectric shoc k.

d) Do not abuse the cord. Never u se the cord for carrying, pulling or unplug ging the p ower tool. Keep cord a way from h eat, oil, s harp edges or moving parts. Damaged or entangled cords

inc rease the risk of electric shoc k.

e) When operating a po wer tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for

ou tdoor use. Use of a c ord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock.

f) If operating a power t ool in a damp location is unavoidable, use a residual current device (RCD) pro tected sup ply. Use o f an RCD reduces the risk of electric sho ck.

Pe rsonal S afety

a) Stay alert, watch wha t you are d oing and use common sense when operatin g a power t ool. Do not us e a power tool while you are tired or under the influ ence of drugs, alco hol or medication. A

mo ment of i nattention while ope rating po wer tools may result in serious personal i njury.

SPECIAL SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS FOR CHAIN SAW

zKeep all parts of the body away from the saw chain when the chain saw is operating. Before you start the chain saw, make sure the saw chain is not contacting anything. A moment of inattention while operating chain saws may cause entanglement of your clothing or body with the saw chain.

zAlways hold the chain saw with your right hand on the rear handle and your left hand on the front handle. Holding the chain saw with a reversed hand configuration increases the risk of personal injury and should never be done.

zWear safety glasses and hearing protection. Further protective equipment for head, hands, legs and feet is recommended. Adequate protective clothing will reduce personal injury by flying debris or accidental contact with the saw chain.

zDo not operate a chain saw in a tree. Operation of a chain saw while up in a tree may result in personal injury.

zAlways keep proper footing and operate the chain saw only when standing on fixed, secure and level surface. Slippery or unstable surfaces such as ladders may cause a loss of balance or control of the chain saw.

zWhen cutting a limb that is under tension be alert for spring back. When the tension in the wood fibres is released the spring loaded limb may strike the operator and/or throw the chain saw out of control.

zUse extreme caution when cutting brush and saplings. The slender material may catch the saw chain and be whipped toward you or pull you off balance.

Carry the chain saw by the front handle with the chain saw switched off and away from your body. When transporting or storing the chain saw please always fit the guide bar cover. Proper handling

of the chain saw will reduce the likelihood of accidental contact with the moving saw chain

.

zFollow instructions for lubricating, chain tensioning and changing accessories. Improperly tensioned or lubricated chain may either break or increase the chance for kickback.

zKeep handles dry, clean, and free from oil and grease. Greasy, oily handles are slippery causing loss of control.

zCut wood only. Do not use chain saw for purposes not intended. For example: do not use chain saw for cutting plastic, masonry or non-wood building materials. Use of the chain saw for operations different than intended could result in a hazardous situation.

Causes and Operator Prevention of Kickback

Kickback may occur when the nose or tip of the guide bar touches an object, or when the wood closes in and pinches the saw chain in the cut.

Tip contact in some cases may cause a sudden reverse reaction, kicking the guide bar up and back towards the operator.

Pinching the saw chain along the top of the guide bar may push the guide bar rapidly back towards the operator.

Either of these reactions may cause you to lose control of the saw which could result in serious personal injury. Do not rely exclusively upon the safety devices built into your saw. As a chain saw user, you should take several steps to keep your cutting jobs free from accident

5

SP ECIAL SAFETY IN STRUCT IONS F OR CHAI N SAW

C auses and Opera tor Prevention of Kickback (continu ed)

or injury.

Kic kback is t he result of tool misuse and/or incorrect operating procedur es or conditions and can be avoi ded by ta king prope r precautions as given below:

zMaintain a firm grip, with thumb s and fingers encircling the chain saw handles, with b oth hands on the sa w and posit ion your b ody and ar m to allow you to resist kickback forces. Kickback forces ca n be con trolled by the operator, if proper precautions are taken. Do not let go of the chain saw.

zDo not overreach and do not cu t above shoulder hei ght. This helps preven t uninten ded tip

contact and enables better control of the chain saw in un expected situations.

zOnly use replaceme nt bars and chains sp ecified by the manufacturer. Incorrect replacement

bars and chains m ay cause chain brea kage and /or kickba ck.

Follow the ma nufacturer’s sharpening and maintenance instructions for the sa w chain. D ecreasing th e depth g auge height can lead to increased kickb ack.

Recommende d:

Use a residual curre nt device with a trip ping curr ent of 30mA or less

During th e cutting o peration, the suppl y cord mu st be securely positio ned to prevent the cord from snagged on branches and th e like.

The first-time user sh ould, as a minimum practice, cutting logs on a saw-horse or cradle.

Lubrication System

The chain is autom atically lub ricated.

Use only new chain oil specifically formulated for chainsaws.

WARNI NG! Never use wasted oil, low q uality oil, or insuffici ent oil. This could damage the pump; the bar and the chain may re sult in serious perso nal injury

Check oil level bef ore each work session, refill if l ess than ¼ full.

If the lubrication syste m does not work properly, check if the oil filter and all oil-ways are cle an and free from o bstructions . If it is still not worki ng, conta ct an authorised ser vice centre.

SP ECIAL SAFETY IN STRUCT IONS F OR CHAI N SAW

Sa fety Cha in Brake

Kic kback is a phenom enon whereby the tip of the saw flies quickly and uncontrollably upwards tow ards the operator. It happen s with little or no warning and can be caused by cutting with the blade tip, if the saw gets p inched in it’s cut, or if the saw contacts debris.

Th e risk of kic kback can never b e completely elimin ated but it can be re duced by:

Ensurin g the work area is f ree of deb ris.

Not allowing the chain to get pinch ed.

Not cu tting with the dang er area at the tip of the saw .see illustration below.
