Overview

OpenMG Jukebox is a software application that utilizes Sony Corporation's copyright protection technology, "OpenMG." It allows users to store and play digital music content on the hard disk drive of a computer. You can transfer digital audio files from the hard drive to a Sony Net MD such as the Portable MiniDisc Recorder, etc., for portable listening. The OpenMG copyright protection technology enables storage, playback and edit of music contents while maintaining the holder's copyrights by preventing unauthorized distribution.
:er
To listen to digital music with a Net MD, import and save audio files into the hard disk of your computer using the OpenMG Jukebox. You can import digital audio files with OpenMG Jukebox in the following ways:
• Recording from audio CDs inserted into the CD-ROM drive of your computer (the recorded songs are compressed in the ATRAC3 format) (see page 15).
• Downloading digital audio files provided by HMD (Electronic Music Distribution) service* * sites over digital networks such as the Internet (see page 17).
• Conv'erting existing MP3 and WAV format audio files to the ATRAC3 format which is encrypted in OpenMG format (see page 19).
* EMD may not be available in certain areas of the world.
4
Page 5
After storing the audio files on the hard disk of your computer, you can transfer them to the Net MD using OpenMG Jukebox.
Transferring audio files to the Net MD from your computer is called "check-out." Returning checked-out audio files back to that computer is called "check-in."
For details, see "Check-In/Check-Out" in the Glossary on page 37.
Operating and editing audio -fites oh tlie NetMD
From your computer, you can perform disk operations (playback, fast forward, rewind, etc.) and editing operations (disc and track labeling, moving and deletion) on the Net MD. Playback sounds are output through the Net MD's headphones jack or audio out jack (depending on the Net MD model).
For details, refer to "Net MD Help" of the online help.
Page 6
The OpenMG technology* allows you to enjoy digital music, while maintaining the copyrights of its holders. OpervMG Jukebox encrypts audio files in OpenMG format and stores them on the hard disk of your computer to prevent unauthorized distribution.
* The copyright protection technology of this software conforms to SDMI (Secure Digital Music
Initiative) specifications.
This software has some restrictions on recording and playback to protect copyrights. You can check-in audio files only to the same computer from which they were checked-out. They cannot be copied or checked-in to other computers.
For details, see "Features of copyright protection by OpenMG" on page 36.
You can check-in audio files only to the computer from which they were checked-out.
You cannot copy or move audio files to another computer.

Restrictions on audio content

High quality digital audio content is widely available through music distribution services on the Internet. To protect the copyrights of its holders from unauthorized distribution, some audio content is distributed with certain restrictions on recording
and playback. For example, the playback period or playback count for the data may be limited. In such cases, checking-out of the audio contents may not be possible. Depending on the contents, some audio data that have been able to checked-out are subject to editing restrictions on the Net MD; e.g., audio contents cannot be erased or track marks cannot be added or erased. It is not possible to check in tracks other than those that were checked-out from your computer (such as tracks recorded using a microphone).

'^'About Bit Rates
In OpenMG Jukebox, the bit rate (page 37) for recording an audio CD can be chosen from 132 kbps/105 kbps/66 kbps. The sound quality and the size of the recorded data after the conversion will be different depending on the selected bit rate. A higher value makes the sound quality better, but the size of the recorded data will be bigger. The recording mode of songs checked-out to a Net MD will differ according to the bit rate that you select, as follows;
• 105 or 132 kbps - LP2
• 66kbps-LP4 LP2 mode provides higher sound quality than LP4, but the recordable time is shorter (i.e., a fewer number of recordable tracks) due to the larger data size of the recorded tracks.

• The length of songs depend on the Playlist and the device to which the songs have been checked out.
• Due to the limitations of the MD system, you may not be able to record the entire amount of
remaining recording time.
• Due to the limitations of the MD system, a total of about 1,700 characters is the maximum number
that can be entered for the disc name, group names and track names on the disc. Take note of this limitation when checking out a large number of songs.
Once you have checked out a song three times, the software will indicate that there are no more check-outs available for that song. In order to check that song out additional times, you must
import the song from the original MP3 file or record it from the CD as it was done previously (see page 15).
22
Page 23
Create a group folder by clicking [New Group] in the Device/Media window and then drag and drop the desired checked-out songs onto the group folder. The songs will be registered to the group, allowing them to be played back using the group function. Queuing and repeat play can now be performed for only the tracks within the group.
Once created, groups can be checked in and checked out.

Features of copyright protection by OpenMG

The OpenMG Jukebox software features OpenMG, a copyright protection technology developed by Sony to protect music copyrights.
OpenMG uses a high-level cryptographic technology to protect music contents with computers.
Users should be notified of the restrictions mentioned below.
• Music recorded on the hard disk using the OpenMG Jukebox software cannot be played if copied onto other computers.
• Installation of the same OpenMG Jukebox software onto other computers is not permitted.
• Usage Rules for using music
If Usage Rules are included in the music by way of the copyright holder or the distributor, operation wilt be restricted to use permitted by the Usage Rule. For music, such as compact discs, that does not contain a Usage Rule, the Default Usage Rule of SDMI will be followed. This Default Usage Rule states that one file can be checked out up to three times only.
• On music contents that are not compatible with the OpenMG Jukebox software
Under the supervision of SDMI, this software prohibits recording of music with a copy prohibition signal.
• Upgrading OpenMG Jukebox software
This software was developed in accordance with the current arrangement between Sony and SDMI. If this arrangement is modified in the future, some of the software
functions may become unavailable. Sony may offer an upgrade kit in this case at additional user expense.

Glossary

ATRAC3

ATRAC3,-which stands for Adaptive Transform Acoustic Codings, is audio compression technology that satisfies the demand for high sound quality and high compression rates.
The ATRAC3 compression rate is approximately 10 times higher than that of the Audio CD, resulting an increased data capacity for the media.

"Check-In /Check-Out"

Check-out is to transfer music files from a personal computer to an external device/ media (such as Network Walkman). Returning checked-out music files to the same computer is to check in. (You cannot move checked-out music files to another computer.)
You can check-out a music file, check it back in, and then check it out again an infinite number of times. The SDMI rules provide that up to four copies of a music file can be checked-out at one time. OpenMG employs a method whereby three copies of a song can be checked-out simultaneously, while the fourth copy is maintained as a "master" on your PC. If three copies of the same song are checked-out at a given time, one copy of the song needs to be checked-in to the computer in order to create an additional check-out.

Bit rate

Indicates the data amount per second. The rate is reflected in bps (bit per second). In
OpenMG Jukebox, the bit rate for recording an audio CD or converting MP3 and WAV
format audio files into ATRAC3 format can be chosen from 132 kbps/105 kbps/ 66 kbps. 105 kbps means 105000 bits of information per second. If the bit rate is large, that means a large amount of information is used to play music. Comparing music of the same format, a 105 kbps data offers better sound quality than 66 kbps data, and 132 kbps data offers better sound quality than 105 kbps data. However, audio files in
formats such as MP3 have different encoding methods, and thus sound quality cannot
be determined by simply comparing the bit rate.

Glossary (continued)
MP3
MP3, which stands for MPEG-1 Audio Layer3, a standard for audio files compression determined by the Motion Picture Experts Group, an ISO (International Organization for Standardization) working group. It enables compression of audio files to about 1/ 10 of the data size of a standard compact disc. Since the MP3 encoding algorithm is disclosed, there are various encoders/decoders that are compliant with this standard, including freeware that is available for no charge. Thus, the MP3 standard is widely used in the computer field.

OpenMG

Copyright protection technology to import and manage contents of music distribution services or CDs. By using software compliant with OpenMG, audio contents can be encrypted before storage on a hard disk drive so that you can enjoy playback of the audio files on that computer. OpenMG also prevents unauthorized distribution of the
contents via the Internet or other networks.

SDMI

SDMI which stands for Secure Digital Music Initiative, is a forum that consists of over 130 companies in the fields of recorded audio content, computers, and consumer electronics, dedicated to developing an integrated method of copyright protection technology that can be used worldwide.
SDMI is working to create a framework for preventing improper usage of audio files and to promote legal music distribution services. The copyright protection technology OpenMG is based upon the SDMI standard.

Windows Media Technology

A technology including a contents management system called Windows Media Rights
Manager, which can encrypt contents and distribute them with their conditions for usage, distribution, etc. Audio files supporting Windows Media Technologies (WMT) downloaded via HMD* can be imported into and managed by OpenMG Jukebox.
* EMD may not be available in certain areas of the world.
