Playing a CD in a car

You can play a CD in a car, using your Discman on car battery. You can also use it on house current, rechargeable battery and dry batteries (see "Power Sources" on pages 18 and 19.) For how to install in a car, see pages 14 -17.

>Other Operations

Using the remote control

You can dperate the remote control only when the power is supplied through the DC IN 4.5 V jack. The buttons on the remote control have the same function as those with the same names on the main unit (except the MODE button).
*Press to mute the sound instantly. Press again to resume sound.
How to install batteries
When to replace the batteries
The batteries usually last for about 3 months. When the remotely controllable area becomes smaller or the illumination of the buttons becomes darker, replace all the batteries with new ones.
To adjust the volume
Press LEVEL + or - button. When you press LEVEL +, "LEV+" is displayed. When you press LEVEL
"LEV-" is displayed.
To make various mode settings
How to set the mode on the remote
control is different from how it is set on
the main unit (see pages 9 -12). 1 Press MODE.
2 Select the mode you want by pressing
A or ▼.
3 Select the setting under the mode by
pressing ► or ◄.
4 Press TRANSMIT.
Notes
• If 10 seconds have passed before you press TRANSMIT, the settings you have made will be cancelled. If this happens, repeat steps 1-4.
• If the indicatioris on the display of the main unit do not change after you press TRANSMIT, that means the signals from the remote control have not been transmitted to the main unit successfully. Operate the remote control within the proper distance and angle from the main unit (see page 9.)
Insert two size AA (R6) batteries (not supplied) into the battery compartment.
About the illumination
• As long as the remote control is kept
in its holder, all the buttons (except A, ▼, ►, and TRANSMIT) and the display are illuminated.
• When the remote control is
disconnected from its holder, the buttons are not illuminated. When you press ILLUMINATION or any operation button, all the buttons (except A, T, ►, A and TRANSMIT) and the display are illuminated for about 15 seconds.

Controllable area
Controllable area is as illustrated. Point the remote control towards the remote sensor of the unit.

Playing tracks repeatedly (Repeat Play)

You can play tracks repeatedly in normal, and shuffle play modes. Repeat all the tracks or only one track.

You can play the tracks in a CD in random order.

Using other functions

To select audio emphasis (DSP)
You can enjoy four types of sound effects with the DSP (Digital Signal Processor) function.
Note
•If the sound is distorted when emphasizing bass, turn down the volume.
To enjoy surround effect
You can add a rich and spacious effect to the original sound. " ((((^3)))) ” is more effective than"

To prevent sound from skipping (SUPER ESP)
The SUPER ESP (Super Electronic Shock Protection) function prevents the sound from skipping by using a buffer memory that stores music data for about 10 seconds. Use this function when listening playing in a car or
during a w¿Ik.
1 Press MODE repeatedly until the
"ESP" indication appears.
2 Press SELECT repeatedly until
"SUPE^ ^S/" appears.
To cancel the SUPER ESP function, press SELECT repeatedly until no ESP mode indication is displayed.
When using the remote control: Press MODE, and select "ESP" by pressing A and V. Then select "SUPER ESP" by pressing ► and ◄ , and press TRANSMIT.
Notes
•Playing may stop when the Discman gets a strong shock even when the SUPER ESP function is on.
• When you record a CD on a cassette tape using a tape recorder that has a blank search function, cancel the SUPER ESP
function.
•If you hear a noise or sound skip when:
- listening to a dirty or scratched CD,
- listening to an audio test CD or,
- the Discman receives continuous shock, set the SUPER ESP function to off.
•Sound may skip if you set the SUPER ESP function to on during play.
To lock the buttons and the lid
You can lock your Discman and the lid to prevent accidental operation.
Slide HOLD/LOCK in the direction of the arrow. When you press any button, ”Hol d"
appears.
You can still operate the unit with the operation buttons on the remote control.
To unlock, slide HOLD/LOCK back.
Note
•The lid may open accidentally caused by continuous jarring or bumpinb in the car. Make sure to lock the lid when using this unit in the car.

To resume playing from the
point you stopped the CD (Resume Play)
Normally, every time you stop and
play, playing starts from the begiruiing
of the CD. The resume play function, however, lets you listen to from the point at which you last turned off the Diseman.
Set RESUME to ON.
To cancel resume play, set RESUME to OFF.
Notes
•Even if RESUME is set to ON, playing starts from the beginning when you open the lid.
•The resume point may be inaccurate by about 30 seconds.
To turn off the beep
You can turn off the beep that sounds as you operate your Diseman.
While you press and hold down ■ STOP/DISPLAY OFF on the main unit, connect the power source.
To listen with the headphones
Connect the headphones to the 0 jack
firmly.
Connecting to other
stereo equipment
You can listen to the CD through other stereo equipment or record a CD on a
cassette tape. Refer to the instruction
manual of other equipment for details. Before making connections, turn off each equipment.
Stereo system, cassette recorder, radio cassette recorder, etc.
* To connect an equipment without LINE
IN nor REC IN jack, use the RK-G134 connecting cord and connect to MIC jack.
Notes
•Before you play the CD, turn down the volume of the connected equipment so as not to damage the connected speakers.
•To output the original sound, cancel the DSP and surround functions (see page
n.)

installing in a Car

Where to place your Discman and remote control holder

• Install the Discman and remote control holder in a location which:
- does not intefere with your driving.
- is not dangerous for passengers.
- does not interfere with the glove
box lid or ashtray.
- is stable, and where nothing around
it may interfere with installation.
• Do not install the Discman and remote control holder near heat sources or where subject to direct sunlight, excessive dust, or moisture (especially on a dashboard.)
Please understand that we will not incur any obligations for troubles caused by incorrect installation.

Mounting your Discman

Attach the Discman to the console box with the supplied Velcro tapes.
Bottom of the Discman
•When you are going to park your car for a long period of time, remove the Discman from the Velcro tapes so that it will not be exposed to direct sunlight.
For models supplied with the mount plate
Before attaching the Discman to the console box, attach the Discman to the mount plate.

Attach the remote control holder with the supplied double-sided sticking tape.
To route the cord
Use the supplied spiral tube to route the cords so that they do not interfere with your driving.
Note on the car battery cord
The 4.5V DC plug supplied with car battery cord conforms to the proposed standards of the Electronic Industries Association of japan (EIAj). Do not connect it to other Discman.

Preparing the car connecting pack

If you have a car cassette deck with a tape head at the right or left side, you can use the car connecting pack as it is.
If you have a car cassette deck with a tape head inner, change the side where the cord exits as follows:
1 Take out the part as shown.
2 Change the side where the cord
exits and reattach the part.
3 Insert the car connecting pack into
the car cassette deck.

Change the tape transport direction, if necessary.

Notes
• If no sound is heard or the car connecting pack is ejected, change the direction of playback on the car cassette deck.
• Never insert the cord end of the car connecting pack into the cassette insertion door. Otherwise, the cord may break or the car cassette deck may be damaged.
• You cannot use the car connecting pack with some car cassette deck.
•The cord should be placed so that it does not hinder driving.
• To disconnect the cord from the Oiscman, pull it out by grasping the plug.
Never pull the plug out by the cord.
• With some car cassette decks, you may hear some rattling noise from the car ^ connecting pack. However, this is not a sign of malfunction.

Replacing the fuse of the car battery cord

If the Discman does not operate, check the fuse. If it is blown, replace it as follows:
1 Turn off the Discman and remove
the cigarette lighter plug from the cigarette lighter socket.

Remove the plug end by turning it
counterclockwise.

Remove the defective fuse from the plug.

insert the supplied spare fuse into the plug.

Replace the plug end by turning it clockwise.

Notes
•Be sure to use the supplied spare fuse. Never use a piece of wire as a substitute for the fuse.
•If the fuse is blown again after replacing it, contact your nearest Sony dealer. In such a case, bring the supplied spare fuse to the dealer with you.

►Power Sources

Using AC power adaptor

Connect the supplied AC power adaptor to the DC IN 4.5 V jack and a wall outlet.

For models supplied with the AC plug adaptor
If the AC power adaptor does not fit the wall outlet, use the AC plug adaptor.

Using rechargeable battery (BP-DM10)

Insert the rechargeable battery so that the word "Discman" is facing the same direction as illustrated inside the lid, and close the lid.
Connect the AC power adaptor and charge for about 3 hours. The indication "CHG" lights up until charging is completed.
Charge the rechargeable batteries before
using them for the first time.

When to charge the battery
When the battery is used up, indication appears in the display. Charge the rechargeable battery.
Battery life
When you use the Diseman on a flat and stable place, approx. 2.5 hours (with SUPER ESP on) and 3.5 hours (with SUPER ESP off) of continuous play is possible.
To take out the batteries
Press the © side of the battery as shown.
/Votes
•Charging time varies depending on how the rechargeable battery is used.
• If the battery is new or has not been used for a long tinu\ it may not be charged completely until you charge and discharge it several times.
♦If the battery life reduces by about half,
replace it with Sony BP-DMIO rechargeable battery. Do not use any other rechargeable battery.

Using dry batteries

1 open the lid of the battery
compartment.

Insert two LR6 (size AA) alkaline batteries by matching the 0 and © to the diagram inside the battery case and close the lid.
When to replace the dry batteries
When the battery is used up, indication appears in the display.
Replace all the batteries with new ones.
Battery life
When you use the Diseman on a flat and stable place, approx. 5 hours (with SUPER ESP on) and 7 hours (with SUPER ESP off) of continuous play is possible.
Notes
•Do not charge the dry batteries.
•Do not mix new batteries with old ones.
•Do not use different types of batteries together.

Precautions

On safety
•Should any solid objects or liquid fall into the unit, unplug it and have it checked by
qualified personnel before operating it any further.
•Do not put any foreign objects in the DC
IN 4.5 V (external power input) jack.
On power sources
♦When you are not using the unit for a
long time, disconnect all power sources from the unit.
•The nameplate indicating operating voltage, power consumption, etc. is located on the bottom. (On the AC power adaptor for Middle East only.)
On the AC power adaptor
•Use only the supplied AC power adaptor. Do not use any other AC power adaptor.
Polarity of the plug (EIAJ standards)
•To unplug the AC power adaptor from
the wall outlet, grasp the adaptor itself, do not pull its cord.
On dry and rechargeable batteries
• Do not throw the batteries into fire.
•Do not carry the rechargeable batteries
with coins or other metallic objects. It can
generate heat if the positive and negative
terminals of the batteries are accidentally
contacted by a metallic object.
• Do not tear off the film on the
rechargeable battery.
On the unit
•Keep the lens on the unit clean and do not touch it. If you do so, the lens may be damaged and the unit will not operate properly.
• Do not put any heavy object on top of the unit. The unit and the CD may be damaged.
•Do not leave the unit in a location near heat sources, or in a place subject to direct sunlight, excessive dust or sand, moisture, rain, mechanical shock, unleveled surface, or in a car with its windows closed.
♦If the unit causes interference to the radio
or television reception, turn off the vmit or move it away from the radio or television.
• Do not wrap the unit in a cloth or blanket during use as it may cause malfunction or serious accidents.
On headphones
Road safety
Do not use headphones while driving, cycling, or operating any motorized vehicle. It may create a traffic hazard and is illegal in some areas. It can also be potentially dangerous to play your headsets at high volume while walking, especially at pedestrian crossings. You should exercise extreme caution or discontinue use in potentially hazardous situations.
Preventing hearing damage
Avoid using headphones at high volume. Hearing experts advise against continuous, loud and extended play. If you experience a ringing in your ears, reduce volume or discontinue use.
Caring for others
Keep the volume at a moderate level This will allow you to hear outside sounds and to be considerate to the people around you.

Maintenance

To clean the lens
Clean the lens with a lens cleaning kit KK­DM1.
To clean the casing
Use a soft cloth slightly moistened in water or a mild detergent solution. Do not use alcohol, benzine or thinner.

T roubleshooting

Should any problem persist after you have made these checks, consult your nearest Sony dealer.
The CD does not play or "no
dl 5l" appears in the display
though a CD is placed in the unit.
The CD is dirty or defective. Insert the CD with the label side up. Moisture conder\sation has occurred. Leave the unit aside for several hours until the moisture evaporates.
4 The lens is dirty.
Close the lid of the unit and the battery compartment firmly.
•> Make sure the batteries are inserted correctly. Connect the AC power adaptor to a
wall outlet securely.
No sound, or noise is heard.
Connect the plugs firmly. Plugs are dirty. Clean the plugs with a dry soft cloth periodically.
"H/ dc ' n" appears in the
display.
Use only the supplied AC power adaptor or recommended AC power adaptor AC-E45HG (not supplied).
"Ho/ d" appears in the display when you press a button.
The buttons are locked. Slide
HOLD/LOCK back.
The lid will not open.
The lid is locked. Slide HOLD/LOCK back.
The battery life is short.
Manganese batteries are u.sed. Use alkaline batteries.
Replace the batteries with new ones.

When using on the remote control, various messages appear on the display. Main messages are;
