Precautions
Moisture condensation
On a rainy day or in a very damp area, moisture may
condense on the lenses inside the unit. Should this occur,
the unit will not operate properly. In this case, remove
the disc and wait for about an hour until the
moisture has evaporated.

Notes on discs (1-A)
Do not use discs with sticky residue on the surface (e.g.,
second-hand or rental discs with sticky seals, ink, or
peeling stickers). If you use such a disc, the sticky
residue could cause the disc to stop spinning and may
cause a malfunction or ruin the disc.
• Do not use any discs with labels or stickers
attached.
The following malfunctions may result from
using such discs:
—Inability to eject a disc (due to a label or
sticker peeling off and jamming the eject
mechanism).
—Inability to read audio data correctly (e.g.,
playback skipping, or no playback) due to
heat shrinking of a sticker or label causing a
disc to warp.
•Discs with non-standard shapes (e.g., heart,
square, star) cannot be played on this unit.
Attempting to do so may damage the unit. Do
not use such discs.
•You cannot play 8 cm CDs.
Notes on handling discs (1-B)
A dirty or defective disc may cause sounddropouts during playback. To enjoy optimum
sound, handle the disc as follows.
On handling discs
• To keep the disc clean, handle the disc by its edge.
Do not touch the surface (1).
• Do not stick paper or tape on the disc (2).
If there is a sticky residue, glue etc., on the disc,
remove it completely before using the disc.
• Do not expose discs to direct sunlight or heat
sources such as hot air ducts.
Do not leave discs in a car parked in direct
sunlight (3).
• After playing a disc, store it in its case.
On cleaning
• Before playing a disc, clean it with a cleaning
cloth. Wipe the disc from the centre out (4).
Do not use solvents such as benzine, thinner,
commercially available cleaners or antistatic
spray intended for analogue discs.

In addition to playing an audio CD with the
unit, you can play a disc containing MP3 files;
compressed audio files (tracks) with quality of
sound. You can also play a Video CD* and view
pictures on the monitor of connected optional
unit.
Depending on a Video CD, operation may be
different or restricted. Refer to the instructions
supplied with your disc.
* This unit is not compatible with version 2.0.
Indications of monitor and
display window
The indications of monitor and display window
will differ, depending on the type of connectd Sony
BUS compatible master unit. The monitor and
display illustrated here correspond to those of
Media Center/Receiver XAV-7W.

bottom of the unit)
This unit conforms to the NTSC/PAL colour
system by setting the select switch to NTSC
or PAL. The TV colour system of this unit is
factory-set to the NTSC position. See
“NTSC/PAL select switch” in the
Installation/Connections manual.
8 EJECT (Z) button
To eject a disc from the unit.

Tip
This unit must be connected to an optional Sony
master unit with BUS control functions, such as the
recommended Media Center/Receiver XAV-7W.
Playing a disc
Insert a disc (labelled side up) in the unit.
Playback starts automatically.
Press To
(PAUSE) (X) pause playback
(EJECT) (Z) eject the disc
Proceed with further operations by using the
optional unit(s) controls. For details, refer to
the operating instructions supplied with
connected optional units.
Notes
• This unit will resume playback;
– when you select the same source and mode of
this unit again.
– when CD playback is automatically switched to
this unit from other connected optional CD units.
• During repeat/shuffle playback, this unit may work
differently from other optional Sony CD units.
• During shuffle playback, album up/down is not
available.
• With this unit connected to an optional Sony BUS
compatible master unit and an optional monitor
other than XAV-7W, display items may appear as
follows;
“DRCTY” or “DIR” may appear instead of
“ALBUM.”
“FILE” may appear instead of “TRACK.”

Removing the unit
1 Insert the supplied tool between the unit
and the frame, and rotate 90° to release
the hidden mounting spring. Repeat on
the opposite side and remove the frame.

2 Insert a flathead screwdriver between
the bracket and mounting spring.
Gently pry the spring toward the unit
while pulling the unit out a little.
Repeat on the opposite side and
remove the unit.

Troubleshooting
The following checklist will help you remedy
problems you may encounter with your unit.
Before going through the checklist below, check
the connection and operating procedures.
CD/Video CD playback
A disc cannot be loaded.
•Another disc is already loaded.
•The disc is forcibly inserted upside down or
in the wrong way.
Playback does not begin.
•Dirty or defective disc.
•Some CD-Rs/CD-RWs may not play due to
its recording equipment or the disc
condition.
The sound skips.
Dirty or defective disc.
No picture.
•Check that the unit is connected securely.
•Make sure that the monitor is turned on.
•Make sure that the video input is selected on
the monitor to view pictures from the unit.
•While driving a car, you cannot watch the
pictures. To prevent accidents, the front
video output is connected to the parking
brake switch cord.
t Stop your car and park in a safe place to
watch the pictures.
Not work properly
This unit may not work properly, depending
on the connected optional master unit.

About Video CDs
A compact disc that contains moving pictures.
The picture data uses the MPEG 1 format (Video
CD), a worldwide standard of digital
compression technology.
Video CDs also contain compact audio data.
Sounds outside the range of human hearing are
compressed while the sounds we can hear are
not compressed.
About audio CDs
Notes on CD-R/CD-RW discs
• You can play CD-Rs (recordable CDs)/CD-RWs
(rewritable CDs) on this unit.
•Some CD-Rs/CD-RWs (depending on the equipment
used for its recording or the condition of the disc) may
not play on this unit.
• You cannot play a CD-R/CD-RW that is not finalized*.

The playback order of the MP3 files
The playback order of the folders and MP3 files is
shown in the illustration.
Notes
•A folder that does not include an MP3 file is skipped.
• When the reset button of the connected car audio is
pressed, the unit will automatically be activated and
read information of the CD in the unit. When the CD
information in the unit has been read, the unit will
automatically stop operation. Depending on the
recording method, it may take some time to stop the
operation even if you set the ignition key to OFF
during disc reading. This is not a malfunction.
• The following discs take a longer time to start
playback.
–a disc recorded with complicated tree structure.
–a disc recorded in Multi Session.
–a disc to which data can be added.
We recommend that you make only one or two trees
for each disc.
• Depending on the disc condition, the unit may not
play some discs.
• Maximum folder number in a disc: 255 (including root
folder and empty folders)
• Maximum MP3 file number in a disc: 999
Tip
To specify a desired playback order, input the order by
number (e.g., “01,” “02”) before the folder or file
name, then record contents onto a disc (The order
differs depending on the writing software).

About MP3 files (3)
MP3 (MPEG 1 Audio Layer-3) is a standard
technology and format for compressing a sound
sequence. The file is compressed to about 1/10 of
its original size. Sounds outside the range of
human hearing are compressed while the sounds
we can hear are not compressed.
Notes on discs
You can play MP3 files recorded on CD-ROMs, CD-Rs
(recordable CDs), and CD-RWs (rewritable CDs). The
disc must be in the ISO 9660*
format, or Joliet or Romeo in the expansion format.
You can use a disc recorded in Multi Session*
*1ISO 9660 Format
The most common international standard for
the logical format of files and folders on a CDROM. There are several specification levels. In
level 1, file names must be in the 8.3 format (no
more than eight characters in the name, no
more than three characters in the extension
“.MP3”) and in capital letters. Folder names
can be no longer than eight characters. There
can be no more than eight nested folder levels.
In level 2, file names can be up to 31 characters
long (including the delimiter, the dot “.”, and
the extension “. MP3”). Each folder can have
up to 8 trees.
For Joliet or Romeo in the expansion format,
make sure of the contents of the writing
software, etc.
*2Multi Session
This is a recording method that enables adding
of data using the Track-at-Once method.
Conventional CDs begin at a CD control area
called the Lead-in and end at an area called
Lead-out. A Multi Session CD is a CD having
multiple sessions, with each segment from
Lead-in to Lead-out regarded as a single
session.
CD-Extra:A format that contains audio tracks
(audio CD data) in Session 1, and a data track
in Session 2.
Mixed mode CD:A format that contains a data
track and audio tracks (audio CD data) in a
session.
Notes
• With formats other than ISO 9660 level 1, folder
names or file names may not be displayed correctly.
• When naming, be sure to add the file extension
“.MP3” to the file name.
• If you put the extension “.MP3” to a file other than
MP3, the unit cannot recognize the file properly
and will generate random noise that could damage
your speakers.

Cautions when playing a disc recorded in Multi Session
• Regarding CD-Extra, you can only play audio tracks
(audio CD data) on the disc.
• Regarding Mixed mode CD written by Disc-at-Once,
you can play both audio tracks (audio CD data) and
MP3 files on the disc.
• Regarding Mixed mode CD not written by Disc-atOnce, you can only play MP3 files on the disc.
About display items
Notes on display items in the display window of
connected optional units
• Folder, directory, and album mean the same thing
containing some MP3 files in a disc. MP3 file means a
track.
• Folder name and MP3 file name can be displayed
with up to first 8 characters of the name.
• Characters such as “A-Z,” “0-9,” and “_” can be
displayed.
•
Some characters cannot be displayed. Characters and
signs which cannot be displayed appear as “ *.”
•
Up to the 499th MP3 file, MP3 file numbers are
displayed fully. On and after the 500th MP3 file, MP3
file numbers are displayed with only the last two digits.
• When this unit is connected to an optional Sony BUS
compatible master unit available for album jump
function*;
– Album number remains “1” in the display window
or on the monitor though you have applied
operations for album jump.
– MP3 file number appears as the added MP3 file
number. It is numbered from the first MP3 file on
the disc.
* With a Sony master unit without album jump function
connected, the function is not available.
Note on character codes
Character codes vary depending on the master unit.
For details, refer to the operating instructions for the
master unit.
Note on display of playing time
In the following cases, elapsed playing time may not be
displayed accurately.
– when an MP3 file of VBR (variable bit rate) is played.
– during fast-forward/reverse.

在 level 2 中，檔案名稱最多可為 31 個字符

對於擴展格式中的 Joliet 或 Romeo 格式，請確
認寫入軟體等的容量。
*2Multi Session
這是一種採用 Track-at-Once 方法，用於增加資
料的錄製方法。常規的CD從稱作 Lead-in 的 CD
控制區開始，在稱作 Lead-out 的區域結束。
Multi Session CD 是一種具有多話路的 CD，從
Lead-in 到 Lead-out 的每個分段被作為單獨的
話路。
CD-Extra：是一種在話路 1 中為包含音頻軌跡
（音頻 CD 資料），且在話路 2 中包含資料軌跡
的格式。
Mixed 型 CD：在一個話路中同時包含資料軌跡和
音頻軌跡（音頻 CD 資料）的格式。
附註
•
除了 ISO 9660 level 1 格式，其它格式的資料夾名稱或
檔案名稱可能無法正確顯示。
•
在命名時，必須在檔案名稱後加上擴展名“.MP3”。
•
如果將擴展名“.MP3”加在非 MP3 檔案後面，本裝置則無
法正確識別該檔案，並將產生能損壞揚聲器的雜音。
播放以 Multi Session 錄製的光碟時的警示
•
關於 CD-Extra，您只能播放該光碟中的音頻軌跡
（音頻 CD 資料）。
•
關於採用 Disc-at-Once 方法寫的混合型 CD，您
可以播放該光碟上的音頻軌跡（音頻 CD 資料）和
MP3 檔案。
•
關於採用非 Disc-at-Once 方法寫的混合型 CD，
您只能播放該光碟上的 MP3 檔案。
關於顯示項目(4)
有關所連接選購裝置的顯示窗中所顯示項目的註解
•
資料夾、目錄和專輯是指光碟中包含一些 MP3 檔
案的同類項目。MP3 檔案是指一個樂曲。
•
資料夾名稱和 MP3 檔案名稱最多只能顯示名稱的
前8個字元。
•
“A-Z”、“0-9”和“-”這類字元可以顯示。
•
有些字元不能顯示。無法顯示的字元和符號用
“
*
”代替顯示。
•
至第 499 個 MP3 檔案，MP3 檔案號碼將全部顯
示。第 500 個及後面的 MP3 檔案，其 MP3 檔案
號碼只能顯示最後兩位數。
•
當本裝置連接至具有專輯跳躍功能*的選購裝置
Sony BUS 相容主機時：
－即使您已運用專輯跳躍功能，而在顯示窗或監視
器上，專輯號碼仍然保持“1”。
－MP3檔案號碼顯示增加後的 MP3 檔案號碼。該號
碼從光碟上第一個 MP3 檔案開始編號。

當本裝置連接了沒有專輯跳躍功能的 Sony 主機，
則不能使用此功能。

關於播放時間的顯示
在下列情況中，已播放時間可能顯示不準確。
－當播放 VBR（不確定比特速率）MP3 檔案時。
