The first time you turn on your Memory Typewriter, a preset format is
activated. It is set for general typing purposes. These settings remain
active until you change them or recall a file with different settings.
Margins and Tabs
Margins and tabs for Type Mode, Line Mode, and Mem Mode are set in
Type Mode, but can be changed in Mem Mode when text is recalled for
editing. Margins and tabs are set using the typing scale which appears
on the display in Type Mode. A blinking cursor indicates the typing
position. The letter “L” indicates your left margin setting. The letter “R”
indicates your right margin setting. In the example below, the left
margin is set at 12.

Margins
In Type Mode, to signal that you are near the right margin, the
typewriter will beep 5 spaces before the margin. In Mem Mode, the text
will automatically wrap to the next line.
Margins are preset depending on the pitch setting. They are:

Setting Margins
New margin settings remain until changed again.
1.Move the Mode Selector to Type. The typing scale appears on
the display.
2.Move the cursor to the desired left margin setting on the scale using
the Spacebar and/or Back Space key. You can also use Code +
and Code + .
3.Press Margin. The unit beeps and an “L” appears on the display.
4.Move the cursor to the desired right margin setting on the
typing scale.
5.Press Code + Margin. The unit beeps and an “R” appears on
the display.
6.You can change to Mem or Line Mode, if desired.
IMPORTANT: If you change margins in
Mem
Mode, be sure
to reformat the text before printing.

Tabs
Up to sixteen (16) tabs may be set. Tabs may be set outside margins. The
tab settings remain until changed again. (If Auto Return is activated, tabs
cannot be set beyond the right margin.)

Symbol () appears on the display. In Line Mode, the cursor moves to
the tab setting on the display, but no symbol appears.

Using Special Tabs
Decimal Tabs
1.Press Tab (Tab C) to move cursor to the Decimal Tab location. The
display prompt identifies the type of tab and the location. For
example:

2.Type the numbers preceding the decimal point. The numbers appear
on the display. Use Correct to correct errors. To cancel a Decimal
Tab, press Return.
3.Type the decimal point. In Type and Line Modes, the number prints
to this decimal point. In Mem Mode, the number is shown on the
display preceded by the decimal tab symbol “

4.Type the numbers following the decimal point.
Center and Flush Right Tabs
1.Press Tab (Tab C) to move the cursor to the tab location. The display
prompt identifies the type of tab and the location. For example:

Changing Tabs
You can change tabs already set for one format to another. Settings can
be changed in Type Mode or you can change them for a specific
document in Mem Mode when you recall the document.
Changing a Regular Tab to a Special Tab
1.Select Type Mode.
2.Position print hammer on the Regular Tab to be changed.
3.Press Code + Spec. Tab (8). The tab will change to a Decimal Tab
(DT), and the unit will beep once.
4.Press Code + Spec. Tab (8) again for a Centered Tab (
Code + Spec. Tab (8) a third time for a Flush Right Tab (

2.Position the print hammer on left margin.
3.Press Tab S. All Special Tabs are changed to Regular Tabs.
Removing One Tab Setting
1.Select Type Mode.
2.Position the print hammer on that tab location by pressing Tab (Tab C).
3.Press Code + Tab C (Tab). Release immediately. The tab symbol
disappears from the scale. One beep is heard.
Clearing All Tab Settings
In Type Mode, press and hold Code + Tab C (Tab) until 2 beeps are
heard. If you are positioned at a tab stop you will hear 3 beeps. All tab
symbols disappear from the scale. The display prompts:

Settings
The Settings feature allows you to set End of Page warning, Pitch, Line
Spacing, Impression Control, and the number of lines to be displayed in
Mem Mode. The settings remain until changed. Note that the current
settings are always shown on the display in Type and Line Modes.
End of Page Warning, Pitch, Line Spacing and Impression Control are all
set using the display and the setting indicators printed on the unit case
above it. They can be set and/or changed in any mode using the
instructions below.
IMPORTANT: If you change any of these settings in
while you are creating a document, reformat the text
before printing.

End of Page Warning
An End of Page Setting alerts you when you are approximately one inch
from the bottom of the page in Type Mode and Line Mode by beeping 3
times. After you hear this warning, do not attempt to add additional
lines of text. In Mem Mode, the unit will halt printing at approximately
one inch from the bottom of the page for you to insert a new sheet of
paper. End of Page can be set for 11” or 14” paper or can be turned off
unless you are in Mem Mode.
1.Press Code + Settings (7) to activate Settings. The display prompts:

2.Press Spacebar until the correct setting (11”, 14” or OFF) appears on
the display. OFF is not available in Mem Mode.
3.Press Return to select a setting and move to the next setting option.
4.Press Code + Settings (7) to deactivate Settings.
5.Automatically insert paper by pressing Code + Shift (Paper In).
IMPORTANT: Do not use the platen knob to adjust the paper while
using the End of Page feature. If you do, the line
count will be inaccurate. Use the Automatic Paper
Insert feature to insert paper. To adjust the typing
position, use Code + , Code + , or Return. The
line counter is reset each time you use Automatic
Paper Insert.

Pitch
Your typewriter has been designed with triple pitch capabilities: 10
characters per inch (Pica), 12 characters per inch (Elite), and 15 characters
per inch (Micro). When pitch is changed, margins and tabs may need to
be adjusted because the number of characters per inch varies depending
on pitch. Use the scale below for comparable positions.

Line Spacing
You can select single line spacing, 11⁄2 line spacing, or double line
spacing.

Mem
Mode, the entire
Impression Control
Impression Control adjusts the force used by the print hammer to strike
the typing paper. You can select Light, Medium, or Heavy print
impression. It is recommended that you select Heavy impression when
typing carbons or using a Script or Orator printwheel. For normal
typing, use medium impression.
1.Press Code + Settings (7) to activate Settings (if not already activated).
2.Press Return until the display prompts:

NOTE: Standard bond paper stock is recommended for best
quality. Copier paper, erasable bonds and very heavy
textured bond papers do not print well with Correctable
Film Ribbon. For these paper types, we recommend High
Density Correctable Film or Multi-Strike Ribbons. If
typing stencils, use those specifically designed for
daisywheel printers.

Number of Lines
When you are in Mem Mode, you can view either one or two lines of
text. If you elect to view one line of text at a time, the file name and the
cursor position will appear on the top line of the display, and the text on
the second line.
