Functional Spec ification
Overview
The SMART Bluetoot h device pro vides a w ay f or users of a SMART Board to replace t he serial cable that
connects the SMART Board to a computer. On front projection systems this cable must run across the
floor in front of the SMART Board to the user’s computer cr eat ing a possible safety issue if t he cable is
not properly covered. There are two possible modes of operation of the SMART Bluetooth device: a
paired set of devices or a single device. Once in plac e t he solutions pro vide a Bl uetooth Radio
Frequency serial data (RFCOMM) connection running at 9600 baud. This may be increased in the future
as the Cambridge Silicon Radio technology that is being used is rated to run up to 115200 baud for s er ial
devices.

Paired SMART Bluetoot h devices
The paired SMART Bl uetooth devices ar e two identica l devices configured in the factory to only recogni ze
each other. No other Bluetooth devices ar e allowed to connect to these devices. A SMART Board user
installs one device on the SMART Board a nd the other device o n the computer co nnected to a s er ial port
via a short cable. Power is t hen supplied to both Bluetoot h devices and they find each ot her and establish
an RFCOMM connectio n. With the RFCOMM connectio n establ ished, the SMAR T Board user can use the
equipment j ust as they would have with a regular serial cable co nnection.
Single SM ART Bluet oot h device
The single SMART Bluetooth device allows the user to est ablish an RFCOMM connection t hrough a
preexisting i ndustry s t andard Bluetooth device on the computer. The SMART Board user must f ollow t he
instruction pro vided by the manufact urer of t he Bluetooth device (e. g. USB, PC-Card or built-i n) on their
computer to establish the connect io n. G enerally t he steps are as follows:
Locate the SMART Bluetoot h device. The SMART Bluet ooth devic e has a recognizab le name
•
such as SM ART SC7B.
Dete rmine wh ich virtual serial COM port on their co mputer is used to e s tablish ser ial RFCO MM
•
connectio ns via the computer Bl uetooth device.
Specify this COM port in the SMART Board soft ware. When this is specified the manufact urer
•
software usually gi ves a list of Bluetoot h devices and the user selects t he SMART Bl uetooth
device from the list.
With the RFCOMM connectio n establ is hed the SMART Board user can use the equipment j ust
•
as they would have with a regular serial cable connect io n.
Note that this is a general descriptio n of the connectio n establishme nt proc ess and will vary between
manufacturers of t he computer Bluetooth dev ices.
