Introduction

INTRODUCTION

Efcientsherywithtrawlandpurseseineassumesprofessional
andadequateinstrumentationonthegear.Simradhasprovided
professionalinstrumentsforshndingformorethansixtyyears.
Thisusermanualdescribesinstallation,useandmaintenanceof
theSimradPISeineSounderwhenputtousewiththePIcatch
monitoringsystems.

Note

TheSimradPI32andtheSimradPI44andPI54systemswith
softwareversion0.40willonlyacceptPISeineSoundersensors
withdepthrangelimitedto300meters.T ouse600or1000m
depthrange,youwillneedPI44/54withsoftwareversion0.47
(orlater).

Purposeandapplications

ThepurposeofthePISeineSounderistoachieveaccurate
measurementsofboththewaterdepthandtheheightabovethe
seabedwithasinglesensor.ThePISeineSounderthuscontains
bothapressuresensortomeasurethewaterdepth,andanecho
sounderwithtwotransducerstomeasuretheheightabovethe
seabed.Theresultsfromthesemeasurementsaretransmitted
byacousticsignalstothePIcatchmonitoringsystemmounted
onthevessel.

ThePISeineSounderhasbeendevelopedtobeusedonboth
bottomandpelagictrawlsandonpurseandDanishseiners.The
sensormustbeinstalledintwodifferentwaysdependingonthe
application:

•Trawl:Horizontallybehindtheheadrope

•Seine:V erticallybelowthefootrope

Inordertomakepossiblethesetwoapplicationsandmounting
methods,theechosounderinsidethesensorhasbeenequipped
withtwotransducers.Bymeansofa“sensorkey”youcaneasily
denewhichtransducertouse.

Providedwiththesensorisa“giftbox”withtwosensorkeys.
Thesearetwospecialbolts,andbymeansofmagnetisminside
thebolts,thesewillselectwhichechosoundertransducertouse.
Theboltswillalsoactaswaterdetectors,andthatmeansthat
theywillslowlydisintegrate.Whenyoumountthesensorona
trawlorapurseseine,itisthereforeimportantthatyouusethe
correctkey:

INSTALLATION

ThePISeineSounderhasbeendevelopedtobeusedonboth
bottomandpelagictrawlsandonpurseandDanishseiners.
Itisimportantthatyouunderstandthetwodifferentwaysof
installation.

•Trawl:Horizontallybehindtheheadrope

•Seine:V erticallybelowthefootrope

Note

Removethesensorfromthegearbeforeitpassesthroughthe
powerblock.

Ensurethatmountingmaterialattachedtothecharginglugsdo
notformanelectricalconnection,asthiswillshortthecharging
current.

Mountingonatrawl

Location

Placethesensorwhereyouwishtomonitortheheight.Thisis
normallyaftoftheheadropeatthecentreofthenet.

Mounting

Securethetwoforwardfasteninglugs(A)usingtwosnaphooks
andrope.Then,securethetwoaftfasteninglugs(B)usingsnap
hooksandstrongrubberbands.Thismountingplacesthesensor
inacradlesupportedonallfoursides.Inordertosecurethe
sensorinplace,werecommendthatyouassembleabagofne
meshednet,andtiesthistothetrawlclosetothemiddleofthe
headrope.Then,mountthesensorinsidethisbag.Thesensor
mustbeproperlysecuredtopreventitfrommovingsidewaysor
rotateduringuse.Makesurethatyouhavebestpossiblefree
viewbetweenthesensorandthebottom,andbetweenthesensor
andthevessel.
