TheSimradES38-18/200-18CRisa"two-in-one"combitransducerdesignedforshery
andsheryresearchapplications.Itcontainsa38kHzsplitbeamtransduceraswellas
a200kHzsinglebeamtransducer.Bothoffer18degreesbeamwidthattheirnominal
operationalfrequencies.Thesplit-beamtransducerisdesignedwiththreeseparate
sectors.

Thetransducerisnormallymountedushwiththehullplatingorthebottomofablister.
Aclampingringisusedtosecurethetransducerbodytoamountingringweldedinto
thehullplatingorthebottomofablister.Thetransducercanalsobeushmountedat
thebottomofadropkeel.Thetransducercablepenetratesthehullusingastufng
tubeandacablegland.

Atransducermustalwaysbehandledasadelicateitem.Wrongfulactionsmaydamage
thetransducerbeyondrepair.Observethesetransducerhandlingrules:

Transportprotection

Sometransducersaredeliveredwithacoverplatetoprotectthefaceduringtransport
andinstallation.Letthisplatestayonaslongaspossible,butdonotforgettoremove
itbeforethevesselgoestosea.

Cleaningandpaintingthetransducerface

Duringnormaluse,thetransducerissubjectedtobiologicalfouling.Ifthismarine
growthisexcessive,itwillreducetheperformanceoftheES38-18/200-18CR.

Thetransducerhasnotbeendesignedwithanyprotectionagainstbiologicalfouling.
Wheneveropportunityarise,typicallywhenthevesselisdrydocked,thetransducerface
mustbecleanedforshellsandothermarinegrowth.

•Becareful
tothetransducerface.

•Removebiologicalfoulingcarefullyusingaplasticbrush,asuitablesynthetic
detergentandfreshwater.Biologicalmaterialwhichisstronglyrootedinthesubstrate

Specialrulesforacousticwindows

Arctictankshaveacousticwindowsmadeofpolycarbonate.Thesemustneitherbe
paintednorcleanedwithchemicals.Acousticwindowsmustnotbeexposedtodirect
sunlight.

Marinegrowth(biologicalfouling)onthetransducerfacereducestheES38-18/200-18CR
performance.Forthisreason,itisimportanttokeepthetransducerfaceclean.Every
timeyourvesselisindrydock,youmustremovethemarinegrowth.Atthesametime,
youmustinspectthetransducercloselyforphysicaldamage.

Context

Duringnormaluse,thetransducerissubjectedtobiologicalfouling.Ifthismarine
growthisexcessive,itwillreducetheperformanceoftheES38-18/200-18CR.Whenever
opportunityarise,typicallywhenthevesselisdrydocked,thetransducerfacemustbe
cleanedforshellsandothermarinegrowth.

Itisimportanttocheckthetransducerforphysicaldamage.Anycracks,fracturesor
holesintheredprotectivecoatingmayresultinawaterleak,andaleakmaycause
irreparabledamagetothetransducer.

Atransducermustalwaysbehandledasadelicateitem.Wrongfulactionsmaydamage
thetransducerbeyondrepair.Observethesetransducerhandlingrules:

•Donotactivatethetransducerwhenitisoutofthewater.

•Donothandlethetransducerroughly,avoidimpacts.

•Donotexposethetransducertodirectsunlightorexcessiveheat.

•Donotusehighpressurewater,sandblasting,metaltoolsorstrongsolventstoclean
thetransducerface.

Procedure

1Allowforsufcientaccesstocleanandinspecttheentiresurfaceofthetransducer.

2Removebiologicalfoulingcarefullyusingaplasticbrush,asuitablesynthetic

detergentandfreshwater.

Biologicalmaterialwhichisstronglyrootedinthesubstratecanberemoved
carefullywithapieceofwoodorplastic.Ifrequired,youcanalsousecitricacid.
Apply,leaveitworkingforseveralhours,andrinsethoroughlywithfreshwater.

Note

Donotusehighpressurewater ,sandblasting,metaltoolsorstrongsolventstoclean
thetransducerface.Donotdamagetheouterprotectiveskinonthetransducerface.

3Allowthetransducersurfacetodry.

4Doathoroughvisualinspectionofthetransducer.Checkfordents,scratches,

holesorotherdamagetothesurface.

Ifyoususpectdamage,takeahighresolutionphoto.Contactyourdealerorthe
Simradsupportorganizationforadvice.

5Ifnecessary,applyanti-foulingpaintasdescribedinthededicatedprocedure.

Note

Becausesomepainttypesmaybeaggressivetothepolyurethaneinthetransducer,
consultourlistofapprovedpaints.

Paintingthetransducerface

Marinegrowth(biologicalfouling)onthetransducerfacereducestheES38-18/200-18CR
performance.Werecommendthatyoupaintthetransducerfaceimmediatelyafter
installation,andthenagainasoftenasrequiredtomaintaintheprotection.

Becausesomepainttypesmaybeaggressivetothepolyurethaneinthetransducer,
consultourlistofapprovedpaints.

Context

Thetransducerhasnotbeendesignedwithanyprotectionagainstbiologicalfouling.

Anti-foulingpaintmaythereforebeappliedtothetransducerface.

Tominimizethenegativeacousticaleffectsthelayerofanti-foulingpaintmustbeas
thinaspossible.

Note

Theanti-foulingpaintwillreducetheacousticalperformanceofthetransducer.

Thesurfaceroughnessofthetransducersubstrateandthethicknessofthepaintmay
alsoinuencetheperformance.

KongsbergMaritimecannotbeheldresponsibleforanynegativeconsequencesofthe
anti-foulingpaint.

1Cleanthetransducerthoroughly.

Makesurethatyouremovealloilgreaseresidues,aswellassaltandother
contamination.

2Allowthetransducersurfacetodry.

3Abradethetransducersurfaceusingasandingpaperwith240inchgritsize.

4Removealldust.

5Applytheprimer,andletitdry.

6Applythepaint.

Observetheinstructionsprovidedbythepaintmanufacturer.Useairlessspray.

Itisnotpossibletomeasuredrylmthicknessontransducersurface.Youmust
thereforeuseawetlmgaugetofrequentlymeasurethepaintthickness.

Westronglyrecommendthatyoudonotuseapaintbrushand/oraroller .
