Adaptatio n to 24V: 70NB( C), 70FB(C) , 100NB(C), 10 0FB(C) - A 24V b ulb, optio nal extra , art.
no 352 9. 70B(C), 100B(C)- th e illuminat ion is conne cted by a resistor i n series ar t. no 478,
(270 o hm, 0,5 W).
On the mo dels 70N B(C), 70FB(C), 100 NB(C), 100FB(C ) the bulb is mounted w ithin the vi sor.
On the m odels 70B (C) and 100B(C) t he light em itting dio des shoul d be change d as follow s:
1. Loos en both side screw s and take out th e compass f rom the bracket.
2. Remove t he capsule a nd front rin g free from t he base.
3. Loose n the six scre ws and take aw ay the ring f rom the back o f the capsul e.
The em itting dio des are now un covered an d can be exchan ged.
NB! The emitting dio des have a lif etime of 100. 000 hour s so there sho uld be no need to
change them.
POSITIONING
SILVA T YPE 70/10 0 have many differ ent possib ilities of positi oning - ver ti cally, hori zontally,
sloping or ha nging from the cabi n roof (Not FB (C)-model s).
BRACKET MOUNT
The co mpass shou ld be positi oned where it can be easil y read from al l angles, e ven in darkness w hen illumi nated. Posi tion the comp ass as far as possible aw ay from iro n objects o r other
disturbin g magnetic s ources as lo ud speakers, win dscreen w ipers, ins trument s etc.
NB! SILVA s electronic ins truments do not distur b the compas s.
When c hecking fo r magnetic di sturbance, use a n ordinar y SILVA handhel d compass , held in the
fore -and-aft direc tion aroun d the intende d mounting si te. In most ca ses 0.5 to 1 met re betwee n
the com pass and the s ource of dis turbance w ill be sufficie nt. Do not for get to switc h on all
elec trical eq uipment nea r the compas s when makin g this check .
MOUNTING
The co mpass shou ld be mounted e xactly in th e boat’s longitudi nal direct ion. The com pass
shoul d be mounted on a firm b ase (espec ially importa nt for speedb oats) to pre vent oscil lation
of the card. To avo id engine vi brations , a rub b er sheet can b e placed ben eath the comp ass.
70NB(C), 7 0B(C), 100NB(C), 100B (C)
The br acket is mounted eit her directly on th e base or with the tw o mounted mou ldings, ma king
it detachab le. Mounting scre ws of brass a re supplie d. Always u se screws of non- magnetic
material.
NB! The m ounted moul dings are sup plied wit h stop lugs. T hese shou ld be turned for ins tance
forward or down depending on the mounting angle and position.
70FB(C) , 100FB(C)
Cut a hole according t o the enclos ed template . Check that th e mounting de pth Is suff icient!
COMPASSES SUPPLIED WITH COMPENSATOR
NB! The compass is supplied with the front of the capsule correctly positioned for mounting
on a hor izontal ba se. At any othe r mounting an gle, the capsule mu st be adjust ed to 30° fro nt
incli nation. Th is is achieved whe n the lower ed ge on the front is in lev eI with the bl ack mark on
the fr ont main lubb er line. Loo sen the side s crews slig htly, adjust t o the correct fro nt position
and tig hten the scre ws again.
After fina l mounting it i s of utmost impor tance that th e compass c annot be turned wi thin its
brac ket as this affect s the compen sation.
COMPENSATION AND DEVIATION
Comp ensation i s recommended, if t he deviati on is more than 5 degre es, when th e compass is
in its normal mounting position.
If the er ror is less than 5 de grees, it i s sufficient to produce a d eviation t able.
Comp ensation i s made with th e two compe nsation adjuste r screws ”E /W” an d ”N/S” in order
to redu ce the errors cau sed by iron ob jects or ot her source s of magnetic d isturbance. Th e
compe nsation ad juster scr ews are situated at t he compass lower f ront edge.
When c ompensat ing, the boa t should be in an a rea that is not affe cted by per manent- or ele ctromagnetic disturbances.
1. A im the boat due North and turn the ”N/S” s crew until th e compass r eading is 0°.
2. Ai m the boat due E ast and tur n the ”E/W” screw unt il the compas s reading is 90°.
3. Ai m the boat due S outh. If the c ompass doe s not show 180 °, turn the ”N/ S” screw until the
erro r is halved. (E .g. If the er ror is 6° - turn the screw until th e error is 3 °.)
4. Ai m the boat due We st. If the compas s does not sho w 270°, turn t he screw until the er ror is
halved.
5. Go throug h the proced ure again and c heck the adj usted valu es.
6. Che ck the compa ss every 2 0 degrees a nd produce a d eviation t able and dev iation cur ve.
As the magne tic conditi ons in a boat ar e liable to cha nge, we reco mmend chec king of the com pass o nce a year and alway s after inst allation of equip m ent which might aff ect the comp ass.
NB! Do no t regard the c ompass as a n accurat e navigati onal inst rument un til the comp ensation is c arried o ut and the dev iation ta ble is prod uced. Whe never in dou bt, pleas e seek the
advi ce of a compa ss adjust er!
