DESCRIPTION
The Shure Model VA305-HF High-Frequency Speaker is an accessory speaker designed for use with Shure Vocal Master Speaker Columns. When properly installed and connected, the VA305-HF will extend the frequency range of
the Vocal Master Column to 18,000 Hz, providing a greatly enhanced high-frequency response. Note that the VA305-HF
must be connected in parallel with a Vocal Master Speaker
Column; it is not designed to be driven directly by a Vocal Master or Power Master amplifier. Up to three VA305-HF Speakers may be used with each Vocal Master or Power
Master amplifier.
The VA305-HF employs two horn-loaded, high-frequency
dome drivers and an integral passive 5 kHz LC crossover
network to provide proper frequency balance
Master Speaker Columns.
The VA305-HF is constructed of 12.7 mm
covered with gray vinyl and with a black grille to match the
Vocal Master Column. Two plastic bumpers (supplied) can
be affixed to the top of the Vocal Master Column for temporary mounting of the VA305-HF. These bumpers engage hollow cups in the bottom of the VA305-HF. A mounting template is provided to locate these bumpers.
The VA305-HF rear panel contains two parallel-wired phone
jacks for connection to the Vocal Master Column, and a
cable storage compartment. A heavy-duty ing cable with right-angle phone plugs is supplied.

INSTALLATION
To install the VA305-HF on a Vocal Master Speaker Col-
umn, follow these steps:
1.
Using template, mark bumper-mounting locations on top of Column with pointed tool.
2. Mount two bumpers with No.
3. Place VA305-HF on Column. Front and side edges should align with Speaker Column.
4.
Connect VA305-HF to Speaker Column with cable supplied.
A heavy-duty cable is supplied with each VA305-HF Speaker. The cable can be stored in the cable compartment on the back of the VA305-HF. Connect the cable to either of the phone jacks on the back of the VA305-HF and twist the phone plug downward, locking it behind the black bar. Connect the other end of the cable to either of the phone jacks on the back of the VA300-S Speaker Column. If both of the Speaker Column jacks are being used, disconnect one of the cables, and connect the VA305-HF cable. The disconnected cable may be connected to the unused phone
jack on the back of the VA305-HF. Note that the phone jacks

on the VA305-HF Speaker and the VA300-S Speaker Column are parallel-wired, and the cables may be connected in any sequence.
The Shure Models
VA3OO-C, VA302-C Series and PM300 Series amplifiers are designed to deliver full rated power (100W) to an 8-ohm load. Each VA305-HF Speaker when connected to a
VA3OO-S Speaker Column provides a com-
bined speaker system impedance of 16 ohms. Up to three such
speaker systems (three
VA305-HF's plus three VA300-S's) may be connected to these amplifiers. Speaker loads of less than 5.3 ohms should not be used with these amplifiers. No damage to the speakers or amplifier will occur, but thermal
shutoff of the amplifier may result. NOTE:
When using a VA305-HF with a Shure
VA301-S Monitor Speaker, it should be pointed out that the volume control only affects the VA301-S. Consequently, reducing this control from its maximum setting will result in an imbalance of high- and low-frequency sound.
SERVICE INSTRUCTIONS
Speaker Servicing
1. Disconnect speaker cables from phone jacks and remove rear panel.
2. Unsolder one of the wires connected to the two
high-frequency drivers. Using an ohmmeter, measure the dc resistance of each driver. Each high-frequency driver should measure between 13 and 15 ohms. Readings outside these limits indicate possible failures. Repair or replace
any drivers found defective.
3. If above tests do not locate defective driver, check for voice coil rubbing or binding by driving each driver with a test signal (4V
max.) from a sweep oscillator and am-
plifier covering the frequency range from 5,000 to 18,000
Hz.
WARNING
Sound pressure levels generated by this test may be damaging to your hearing. Aim drivers away from listeners and toward sound-absorbent material (curtains, blanket, etc.). Carefully adjust test signal amplitude to avoid unnecessarily high sound pressure levels for prolonged periods.
Sound from drivers should be clean and free from buzzes
or rattles, which may indicate driver failure. Replace any
defective drivers.
4. Reconnect all disconnected driver leads and replace the rear panel. Tighten hardware securely to avoid rattles.
