Camera Recording
Card Recording
Available mode: CARD-CAMERA
It is possible to take a still picture in the same way as you do with a standard camera and record that image on the card.

1 Insert a card in the camcorder (see
page 15).
2 Remove the lens cap. Pull out the
viewfinder completely or open the LCD monitor.
3 Set the Media Selection
switch to CARD.
4 Hold down the Lock button and set the
POWER switch to CAMERA.
• The camcorder turns on in CARD­CAMERA mode, and the picture from the lens is displayed on the screen.

5 Press the Power Zoom buttons to frame
the subject as you desire.
Note: In CARD-CAMERA mode, the zoom will give magnification of 1–7×.
6 Press the STILL button to record a still
image of the subject.
• The O indicator flashes red while data is
being recorded on the card, and returns to white when recording is completed.

Notes:
• In CARD-CAMERA mode, the angle of field is slightly wider than in TAPE-CAMERA or DUAL­CAMERA mode.
• Recording under insufficient lighting may result in blurred images. It is recommended that you use a tripod to record insufficiently illuminated subjects.
• Recording under the light of a fluorescent, mercury, or sodium lamp may cause flickering in the image and, depending on the timing of the shot, may result in changes to colour hue in the image.
• “RECORDING TO MEMORY CARD” or “RECORDING TO TAPE” is displayed during the recording of still images. This display indicates whether the still image is being recorded to a card or to tape. If you do not want this to be displayed, set the MEDIA DISP menu item in the OTHERS menu to “OFF” in one of the CAMERA modes.
• It is also possible to record still images on a card by pressing the CARD REC button on the infrared remote control.

Selecting the Picture Quality and Image Size
The picture quality of still images recorded on a card and the number of recordable images depend on the combination of the picture quality and image size settings. Select the appropriate settings to match the purpose of recording.

Note:
• The picture quality indicator is also displayed in CARD-VCR mode. The picture quality indicator displayed during playback is based on the amount of data for that recorded image. Since the amount of data differs depending on factors such as image detail, sometimes the picture quality indicator displayed during playback may not match the quality setting used during recording.

Selecting the Image Size
Available mode: CARD-CAMERA
Still images recorded on a card are made up of pixels. You can select the number of pixels in still images. Larger numbers of pixels provide greater image detail, but also use more card memory.
Image size options
1280 x 960 (1280): Images are recorded in
1280 × 960 pixels.
640 x 480 (640): Images are recorded in 640 ×
480 pixels.

2 Touch [K] or [L] to select W, and
then touch [SET]. Touch [K] or [L] to select IMAGE SIZE, and then touch [SET].

Recording with the Guide Frame
Available mode: CARD-CAMERA
When your subject is a person, displaying guide frames on the screen will give you a gauge for deciding on the size of the subject’s image.
Guide frame options
CLOSE-UP: Displays a guide frame for
recording a person’s face in close-up.
PORTRAIT: Displays a guide frame for
recording an upper-body view of a person.
FULL-BODY: Displays a guide frame for
recording a full-body view of a person.

2 Touch [K] or [L] to select W, and

Recording with the Self-timer
Available mode: CARD-CAMERA
The self-timer function allows you to record images after a time-lag of 10 seconds. This is convenient when you want to record an image of you and your friends together.

3 Frame the subject, and then press the
STILL button to set the timer.
• The self-timer operating indicator flashes while the timer counts down.
• The shutter will be automatically released 10 seconds after, and a still image of the subject is recorded.

Notes:
• When recording with the self-timer, stabilize the camcorder in the horizontal plane by attaching it to a tripod, etc.
• To cancel the self-timer, press the STILL button again in step 3.
• Self-timer mode will be cancelled after recording one image. Repeat steps 1 to 3 to record another image with the self-timer.
Caution:
• Do not turn the power off or remove the card once the self-timer operating indicator begins flashing.
Note: To cancel the self-timer screen, touch any point on the LCD screen.

Using the Flash Light (Optional Accessory)
Available mode: CARD-CAMERA
Using the flash function of the optional IR & Flash Light enables you to record good-quality still images even in dark locations.
Mounting the IR & Flash Light
1 Hold the IR & Flash Light as shown in
the figure, and mount it to the accessory shoe by sliding it in the direction of the arrow until it locks into place.

2 Turn the screw in the direction of the
arrow to secure the IR & Flash Light.

AUTO: Flash automatically fires in dark
locations (when “LIGHT” is displayed on the screen) each time you press the STILL button.
ON: Flash fires every time you press the STILL
button.

2 In CARD-CAMERA mode, display the
menu screen (see page 31).
3 Touch [K] or [L] to select W, and then

Removing the IR & Flash Light
Turn the screw in the opposite direction than when mounting, and then pull off the IR & Flash Light.

• Do not pick up the camcorder by the IR & Flash

Notes:
• Using the optional IR & Flash Light will shorten the continuous camera recording time with the battery pack.

In order to use a commercially available card with this camcorder, formatting is necessary before its first use. You also need to format a card when one of the following warning indicators appears, in order to use the card with the camcorder.
• “FORMAT MEMORY CARD”
• “MEMORY CARD ERROR”
• “MEMORY CARD READ ERROR”
• “CANNOT STORE DATA”
Cautions:
Formatting a card deletes all images on the
card including the delete-protected images.
Be sure to copy important data on your computer or other media before formatting the card. (See pages 82, 83 and 98 to transfer data on a card to a computer.)
• Do not remove the power source during formatting, as this may cause damage to the camcorder or card. It is recommended that you use the AC outlet for the power supply.

screen.
• To cancel formatting, touch [NO].

Use this camcorder to format a card. The camcorder may not recognize the images on a card formatted by a computer or other equip­ment.
