The equipment has been approved in accordance with Council Decision 98/482/EC for pan-European single terminal connection to the public switched telephone network (PSTN). However, due to differences between the individual PSTNs provided in different countries, the approval does not, of itself, give an unconditional assurance of successful operation on every PSTN network termination point. In the event of problems, you should contact your equipment supplier in the first instance.

Important safety information
• If any of your telephone equipment is not operating properly, you should immediately remove it from your telephone line, as it may cause harm to the telephone network.
• The AC power outlet shall be installed near the equipment and shall be easily accessible.
• Never install telephone wiring during a lightning storm.
• Never install telephone soc k ets in wet locations unless the socket is specifically designed for wet locations .
• Never touch uninsulated telephone wires or terminals unless the telephone line has been disconnected at the network interface.
• Use caution when installing or modifying telephone lines.
• Avoid using a telephone (other than a cordless type) during an electrical storm. There ma y be a remote risk of electric shock from lightning.
• Do not use a telephone to report a gas leak in the vicinity of the leak.
• Do not install or use the machine near water, or when you are wet. Take care not to spill any liquids on the machine.
i
INSTALLATION
Your machine is affected by the environment in which it is installed. Do not install your machine in the following areas.
Excessively hot, cold, humid, or dry areas (for
example, near stoves, humidifiers, or air conditioners)
This may result in damp paper, condensation within the internal mechanisms, misfeeds, and dirty output. (Operating Environment: 15˚C to 30˚C, 20 to 85% relative humidity) Also, in ultrasonic humidifiers, use purified water. If you use tap water, mineral residue can form on internal components of the machine, causing poor-quality output.
Poorly ventilated areas
When copying/printing, this machine emits ozone. The amount of ozone emitted is not harmful, however, if performing large copying/printing jobs and the smell of ozone becomes objectionable, open a window or use a fan to ventilate the area.
Dusty areas
If dust enters the internal parts of the copier, damage or poor-quality output can result.
Areas in direct sunlight
Direct sunlight can distort the plastic parts of the copier and result in poor-quality output.
Areas with high concentrations of ammonia
gas
If you place the machine near another copier that emits ammonia gas (such as one
poor-quality output can result.
paper),
used for copying drafting
*
If you place the machine near a window, make sure it is not exposed to direct sunlight.
ii
INSTALLATION
Close to walls
Place the rear of the copier at least 10 cm from the wall, and leave enough space around the copier for comfortable operation.

shared with lighting such as a lamp, the lights will dim or flicker slightly. Plug the machine into an outlet that is not shared with lighting.
When moving the machine, always use two people lifting with the recessed handholds on the sides of the cabinet.
Areas with excessive vibration
Excessive vibration can harm the machine.
iii
BEFORE USING THE FAX
There are several precautions you must take when using the fax function of this machine. Please observe the following precautions.
●●
About Entering Information
Please see page 1-7 of this manual, the section "BEFORE STARTING ENTER YOUR INFORMATION AND MAKE SETTINGS." Read this section, make the appropriate settings and enter the relevent information for your environment.
About the Internal Lithium Battery
The internal lithium battery is used to protect automatic dialling memories and various other settings.
The lithium battery is slowly consumed during times when the power is switched of f. (The ba ttery is used even if you have not made settings. When the power is switched on, there is little appreciable drain on the battery.)
If the battery level becomes low, you can lose settings you have made, so keep a record of the settings by printing them out. (See page 5-1)
The life of the lithium battery is about 5 years if the power were always switched off.
If the lithium battery needs to be replaced, contact your dealer. If the lithium battery is totally depleted, you cannot use th e fax function.
Additional Information
During a lightning storm, remove the plug from the AC outlet. Information in memory and originals read in memory for substitute reception are not lost.
Always keep the power switch on. If you turn the power off, you cannot receive faxes.
