1 Use
Hydrophone HA is a device used for receiving leak noise at non-
metallic water-filled piping systems up to pressure stage PN 16.
The device may be mounted only on hydrants or on conus-shaped
Whitworth 1” female threads (e.g. water meter connectors).
The device contains a Piezo sensor. This sensor records leak
noise by contact with the water. The noise signals are transmit
ted via cable to a radio transmitter and are then evaluated by a
correlator, together with the signals of a second Hydrophone HA
device.
To permit a more accurate evaluation of the signals, a frequency
filter (e.g. active filter ZF OI) can be used.
2 Installation
Flush the line until the water flowing out is free from dirt.
Notes:
Hydrophone HA – Use and Installation
-
Make sure that no dirt enters the piping system during mounting.
Make sure that there are no leaks at the junction
points to avoid interfering noise at the Hydrophone.
If necessary, seal the 1” thread.
Applies only to underground hydrants: Install an adapter as
follows:
–
Apply a thin film of lubricant (e.g. Vaseline) on the rubber
seals of the adapter. Use only lubricants which are not harm
ful to drinking water.
Place the adapter on the hydrant opening.
–
Turn the adapter until the claw nut locks in at the limit stop
–
below the claws of the hydrant.
Use the turning tool to turn the inner part of the adapter until
–
the adapter sits firmly on the hydrant.
Screw the Hydrophone manually into the adapter / 1” thread.
The coupling for the venting hose must point upwards.
Connect the venting hose to the coupling.

Hydrophone HA – Use and Installation
Push the BNC socket of the cable on the BNC connector of the
Hydrophone and connect the jack plug to the radio transmitter /
frequency filter.
Check the mounted parts for safe fitting before opening the
hydrant and/or the shut-off device.
Open the hydrant / shut-off device completely.
Vent the hydrophone carefully with the help of the venting hose
until you can no longer detect any air bubbles. Open the cock
of the venting hose completely for this.
CAUTION!
If the Hydrophone (or the adapter) is not properly
fitted, you need to disassemble and reassemble all
parts. – Do not twist any parts which are exposed
to water pressure. This may lead to injuries by parts
coming loose and may damage the seals.
3 Disassembly
Note:
Unscrew the Hydrophone HA from the adapter /
1” thread after each use. This is the only way to
prevent the parts from seizing due to corrosion.
Close the hydrant / shut-off device.
Proceed with disassembling by reversing the steps described
under “Installation”.
