SEGA of America, Inc. warrants to the original consumer purchaser that the game disc or
cartridge shall be free from defects in material and workmanship for a period of 90-days from
the original date of purchase. If a defect covered by this limited warranty occurs during this
90-day warranty period, the defective game disc or cartridge will be replaced free of charge.
This limited warranty does not apply if the defects have been caused by negligence, accident,
unreasonable use, modification, tampering, or any other causes not related to defective
materials or manufacturing workmanship. This limited warranty does not apply to used
software or to software acquired through private transactions between individuals or
purchased from online auction sites. Please retain the original, or a photocopy, of your dated
sales receipt to establish the date of purchase for in-warranty replacement. For replacement,
return the product, with its original packaging and receipt, to the retailer from which the
software was originally purchased. In the event that you cannot obtain a replacement from

Use and handling of UMD™

• This disc is P SP® (PlayStation®Portable) form at software and is intend ed for use with the PSP system only. If
the disc is used with other devices, dama ge to the disc or to the device may result. • This disc is compatible for
use wi th the PSP® syst em marke d with FOR S ALE AND US E IN U.S. ON LY. • D ependi ng on the so ftware , a
Memory Stick Duo™ or Memory Stick P RO Duo™ (both sold sep arately) may be requir ed. Refer to the softw are
manual for f ull details. • If pause d images are display ed on the screen for an ext ended period of time , a faint
image may be left pe rmanently on the screen. • Do not lea ve the disc in direct sunlight, near a heat source, in
a car or o ther pl aces sub ject to hi gh heat an d humid ity. • Do not t ouch the o pening o n the rea r of the dis c
(recording surfa ce of the disc; see drawing ). Also, do not allow dust, sand, foreign objects or oth er types of dirt

cloth. • To clean the disc, w ipe the exterior surface ge ntly with a soft cloth. • Do

for CDs, or an ti-static spray inte nded for vinyl LPs as th ese may damage the disc .

adhesives a s these may cause conso le damage or malfunct ion. • SCE will not be
held liable for damage resulting from the misuse of discs.

Ejecting the d isc

Pre ss the r ight s ide of t he dis c unti l it is in t he pos itio n show n in the
drawi ng and then rem ove it. If exce ss force is app lied this may r esult in
damage to the disc.

Storing the di sc

Inser t the botto m side of the di sc and then pr ess on the to p side until i t
cli cks in to pl ace. I f the di sc is no t stor ed pro perl y, thi s may re sult i n
damage to the disc . Store the disc in its case whe n not in use and keep in
a place out of the reach of chi ldren. If the disc is left out this may result in
warping or other damage to the disc.

Recording surface

A very small percentage of individuals may experience epileptic seizures or blackouts when exposed to certain
light patterns or flashing lights. Exposure to certain patterns or backgrounds on a screen or when playing video
games may trigger epileptic seizures or blackouts in these individuals. These conditions may trigger previously
undetected epileptic symptoms or seizures in persons who have no history of prior seizures or epilepsy. If you,
or anyone in your family, has an epileptic condition or has had seizures of any kind, consult your physician
before playing. IMMEDIATELY DISCONTINUE use and consult your physician before resuming gameplay if you
or your child experience any of the following health problems or symptoms:

• dizzines s • disorientation

• altered vision • seizures

• eye or muscle twitches • any involuntary movement or convulsion

• loss of awareness

Use and handling of video games to reduce the likelihood of a seizure

• Use in a well-lit area and keep a safe distance from the screen.

• Avoid prolonged use of the PSP® system. Take a 15-minute break during each hour of play.

• Avoid playing when you are tired or need sleep.

Stop using the system immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms: lightheadedness, nausea,
or a sensation similar to motion sickness; discomfort or pain in the eyes, ears, hands, arms, or any other part of
the body. If the condition persists, consult a doctor.

Do not use while driving or walking. Do not use in airplanes or medical facilities where use is prohibited or
restricted. Set the PSP® system’s wireless network feature to off when using the PSP® system on trains or in
other crowded locations. If used near persons with pacemakers, the signal from the PSP® system’s wireless
network feature could interfere with the proper operation of the pacemaker.

Set up your PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system according to
the instructions in the manual supplied with the system. Turn the
system on. The power indicator lights up in green and the home
menu is displayed. Press the OPEN latch to open the disc cover.
INSERT Virtua Tennis™ 3 disc with the label facing away from
the system, slide until fully inserted and close the disc cover.
From the PSP® system’s home menu, select the Game icon and
then the UMD icon. A thumbnail for the software is displayed.
Select the thumbnail and press the S button of the PSP® to start
the software. Follow the on-screen instructions and refer to this
manual for information on using the software.

NOTICE: Do not eject a UMD™ while it is playing.

Warning! Keep Memory Stick Duo media out of reach of small
children, as the media could be swallowed by accident.

To save game settings and progress, insert a Memory Stick Duo
into the memory stick slot of your PSP. You can load saved game
data from the same memory stick or any Memory Stick Duo
containing previously saved games.

CONTROLS

The following controls are used in this game. Please note that all
explanations assume A Type configuration. Configuration can be
changed via Options (p.9) and the Pause Menu (p.17).

VIEWING THE GAME SCREEN

Press the SELECT button to switch
between Court Cam (default) and Player
Cam. Court Cam offers a TV Gantry view
of the action from 45° above the court.
Player Cam shows a court level view over
the shoulder of the player.

BASIC TECHNIQUES

1 Use the analog stick or

directional buttons to set
your start position and press
a shot button to begin the
Serve Gauge.

2 Hold the analog stick or

directional buttons in the
direction you wish to serve.
Take care as holding it too
long will cause the ball to fault.

3 Press the shot button again so that the Serve Gauge stops on

Max. The closer it is to Max, the stronger the serve will be.

2 Press the Shot Button

Press the shot button to start
your swing. The length of
time between starting your
swing and hitting the ball will
determine the shot's power.
Additionally, the shot type will
vary depending on the shot
button used (see Shot Types).

1 Approach the ball

As the ball is returned by your
opponent, try to anticipate
where it will arrive in your own
court and run quickly to that
position. Your shot type and
footing will vary depending on
your position relative to the ball.

3 Set the Direction

After pressing the shot button,
use the analog stick or direc­tional buttons to determine the
shot’s direction. The direction
will become more extreme the
longer you hold the buttons.

RETURNING SHOTS

Good. A well anticipated ball is

met by a powerful swing.

Bad. Poor anticipation leads to
a weak return or missed shots.

Top Spin (Regular Shot)

Press the gS / gA button for a regular shot applying top spin.

Slice (Defensive Shot)

Press the gF button for a
slice shot when you’re in
a tight spot. The speed is
slow, but it gives you time
to regain your footing.

Lob

Press the gD, gS+gF or gA+gF-buttons for a lob shot that goes
straight over your opponent's head when they're near the net.

HITTING HARD-SHOTS
1 Aim for the peak of

the bounce

By aiming for the ball
when it is at the peak
of its bounce (high shot
point), you can return it
with greater force.

2 Anticipate the ball’s arrival and swing early

Position yourself where the ball will arrive and start your swing
early to build a more powerful shot. Take care, for if you fail to
predict the ball’s arrival correctly, your shot will be weak.

SHOT TYPES

Smash

If you're positioned such that the ball

reaches you before it bounces, you can
automatically volley it back. High balls
sent over your head can be smashed
back into the opponent's court.

Drop Shot

If your opponent is near the baseline, hit
a slice shot, and aim for the front of the
opponent’s court. This allows you to return
a drop shot that falls close to the net.

Running Shot

If you can’t reach the ball in time, press

the top spin button for a running shot. The
momentum will cause you to lose your
footing, and the shot will be weak, but the
ball will be returned.

COM partner during Doubles
matches. Press the

INSTRUCTING A COM DOUBLES PARTNER

DOUBLES WINNING TECHNIQUES

Try to keep one player in each half of
the court. Shots aimed the center of the
opponent's court will cause both players to
move inwards leaving the sidelines open.
Return shots with no directional input will naturally tend towards
the center court.
