Principle of Operation
General
SECU-DATA 1232 is used for wireless data transmission of RS232 signals (point-to-point connections). The data format to both host devices can be set individually. A hardware handshake is implemented for data flow control. The incoming data are prepared for the RF-transmission, a CRC-16 checksum value is added and then the data are sent to the remote device. In case of distortions the message is repeated automatically until it is received correctly by the partner instrument. Here the data are available in the preset format for the connected host equipment. The data transfer is bidirectional, the effective transfer rate is 2.400 Baud.
Functionality in Detail
SECU-DATA 1232 provides a receiver and a transmitter buffer with 64 bytes. RS 232 data coming in from the host device A are put into the buffer. If the buffer is full or if the preset time-out is reached (see section chapter configuration) line RTS blocks the data transfer and the data are sent via RF to the partner device which will acknowledge the reception via RF. Then the input buffer is cleared and RTS enables further data transfer. The remote SECU-DATA 1232 provides the data on the RS 232 output for the connected host device B.

Configuration
The interface to the host device can be configured via the RS 232 interface using a terminal simulation software (e.g. Hyperterminal on Microsoft Windows® PCs). Connect the PC-interface to the SECU-DATA 1232:
PC SECU-DATA 1232
Set the terminal software settings to: 9600 Baud, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity - (8N1)
Enable “Locale Echo“, to see your inputs and also the hardware-handshake (RTS/CTS).
Open the housing of SECU-DATA 1232 and turn on the power supply connected to terminals1 (positive pole) and 2 (negative pole).
Press and keep depressed button “A“ and press two times shortly the but- ton “B“

SECU-DATA 1232 is in the configuration mode now (the yellow “Power“indicator is blinking). Independent from the preset interface parameters for normal operation SECU-DATA 1232 is communicating with 9600, 8, 1, no parity (8N1). On the terminal window you will see:

If no data are coming in from the host device A SECU-DATA 1232 will wait for the time defined herewith and afterwards it will send the data from the RS 232 input buffer via RF:
On the other hand SECU-DATA 1232 transmits the data independently from the time out as soon as the buffer of 64 bytes is full.
After the last input the settings stored in the internal flash memory and SECU-DATA 1232 is restarted (RESET). Abortion: In case of incorrect inputs press the button “B” before you have entered the last parameter. The new settings are deleted and SECU-DATA 1232 will be restarted (RESET).
Selection of RF-frequency Channel Block
SECU-DATA 1232 uses one RF-channel out of 64, these are organised in 8 blocks of 8 channels each. After delivery frequency channel block 6 is set as default. Two SECU-DATA 1232 devices can communicate only if the same frequency channel block is set on both devices.

Procedure for both SECU-DATA 1232:
1. Open the housing of the SECU-DATA 1232. Avoid the intrusion of moisture and pollution while the instrument is open to maintain the reliability
2. Turn on the power supply of the SECU-DATA 1232
3. Press the B-button two times shortly
4. The green “RF“-LED will blink several times, the number of light pulses gives the actual number of the channel block (1 to 8).
5. The light pulses are repeated after a 1 s pause. Each press on button A increments the block number by 1. On the end of the range the block number falls back from 8 to 1 automatically.
6. An interruption of the power supply aborts the setting procedure, the original block number remains in memory; the actual one is not stored.
7. The procedure can be finished by pressing the B-button; the actual block number is stored permanently.
8. Repeat this procedure for the second SECU-DATA 1232 to set the same block number
If required you may check the block number using steps 1 to 4 as described above.
Matching two SECU-DATA 1232
After the delivery the SECU-DATA 1232 devices are not matched together. This has to be done during setup. Also after replacement of a unit, after service and repair it might be necessary to repeat the matching procedure.
Page 9
Security & Electronic Technologies GmbH Page 9
Procedure:
1. Open the housing of the SECU-DATA 1232. Avoid the intrusion of moisture and pollution while the instrument is open to maintain the long-term reliability
2. Turn on the power supply of the SECU-DATA 1232
3. Press shortly on both instruments the A-button (need not be at the same time on both devices)
4. The green “RF”-LED and the yellow “Power“-LED on the SECU- DATA 1232 start blinking alternately – the instruments are in the matching mode now
5. After completion both instruments perform automatically a RESET – the red LED flashes shortly. If the tuning process is not successful you can abort it by pressing shortly the button A – the original settings remain in memory
6. Now the green “RF”-LED and the yellow “Power”-LED on both devices are continuously on – the matching procedure is finished successfully and the RF-connection is established.
Monitoring the RF-status, Alarms
Depending on the application it might be important to monitor the status of the RF-connection and to generate an alarm indication in case of interruptions.
As soon as the RF-connection between two matched devices is established the green RF-LEDs go on and the power supply voltage is connected to terminal 8 of both instruments (the maximum load current is 500mA). If the RF-connection is interrupted or if there is a power failure on one of the devices the internal relay contact will open, terminal 8 is open then.

Commissioning
Installation
Mount the supplied RF-antenna on the connector on the housing of the SECU-DATA 1232 using the supplied adapter. Mount the SECU-DATA 1232 strain free to the base using the 4 supplied M4 screws:
In case of metallic base material (chassis of vehicles, machinery) try to maximise the distance between RF-antenna and the base to achieve maximum effective RF range.

Mounting the Connector Wires
SECU-DATA 1232 device contain a terminal block inside (type: WAGO series 256, ATEX certified) for connecting the corresponding wires. Open the housing by removing the fixing screws on the housing lid.
Important:
Install the wiring only after the power supply of the installation has been turned off. Follow strictly the safety instructions from the manufacturer, adhere to all applicable standards, norms and technical guidelines.
Pass a round cable with the required number of wires through the cable glands (M16 x 1.5) and fix them tightly to ensure the water protection of the housing. You can use also both cable glands if necessary. If one of them is not used close it tightly with the supplied dummy cap.
