SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS – This manual will show you how to use your
charger safely and effectively. Please read, understand and follow these instructions
and precautions carefully, as this manual contains important safety and operating
instructions. The safety messages used throughout this manual contain a signal word,
a message and an icon.
The signal word indicates the level of the hazard in a situation.
Indicates an imminently hazardous situation which, if not avoided, will result in
death or serious injury to the operator or bystanders.

Use only recommended attachments. Use of an attachment 1.3
not recommended or sold by Schumacher® Electric Corporation
may result in a risk of re, electric shock or injury to persons or damage to property.
To reduce the risk of damage to the electric plug or cord, pull by the plug rather than the 1.4
cord when disconnecting the charger.
An extension cord should not be used unless absolutely necessary. Use of an improper 1.5
extension cord could result in a risk of re and electric shock. If an extension cord must
be used, make sure:
That the pins on the plug of the extension cord are the same number, size and shape •
as those of the plug on the charger.
That the extension cord is properly wired and in good electrical condition.•
That the wire size is large enough for the AC ampere rating of the charger as •
specied in section 8.
To reduce the risk of electric shock, unplug the charger from the outlet before attempting 1.6
any maintenance or cleaning. Simply turning off the controls will not reduce this risk.
Do not operate the charger with a damaged cord or plug; have the cord or plug replaced 1.7

Do not operate the charger if it has received a sharp blow, been dropped or otherwise 1.8
damaged in any way; take it to a qualied service person. (Call customer service at

Do not disassemble the charger; take it to a qualied service person when service or 1.9
repair is required. Incorrect reassembly may result in a risk of re or electric shock. (Call

WORKING IN THE VICINITY OF A LEAD-ACID BATTERY IS 1.10
DANGEROUS. BATTERIES GENERATE EXPLOSIVE GASES DURING
NORMAL BATTERY OPERATION. FOR THIS REASON, IT IS OF UTMOST
IMPORTANCE THAT YOU FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS EACH TIME YOU
USE THE CHARGER.
To reduce the risk of a battery explosion, follow these instructions and those published by 1.11
the battery manufacturer and the manufacturer of any equipment you intend to use in the
vicinity of the battery. Review the cautionary markings on these products and on the engine.
This charger employs parts, such as switches and circuit breakers, that tend to produce 1.12
arcs and sparks. If used in a garage, locate this charger 18 inches (46 cm) or more
above oor level.
PERSONAL PRECAUTIONS2.
RISK OF EXPLOSIVE GASES.
NEVER smoke or allow a spark or ame in the vicinity of a battery or engine.2.1
Remove personal metal items such as rings, bracelets, necklaces and 2.2
watches when working with a lead-acid battery. A lead-acid battery can produce
a short-circuit current high enough to weld a ring or the like to metal, causing a
severe burn.
Be extra cautious to reduce the risk of dropping a metal tool onto the battery. It might 2.3
spark or short-circuit the battery or other electrical part that may cause an explosion.
Use this charger for charging LEAD-ACID batteries only. It is not intended to supply power 2.4
to a low voltage electrical system other than in a starter-motor application. Do not use
this battery charger for charging dry-cell batteries that are commonly used with home
appliances. These batteries may burst and cause injury to persons and damage to property.
NEVER charge a frozen battery.2.5
NEVER overcharge a battery.2.6
Consider having someone nearby to come to your aid when you work near a 2.7
lead-acid battery.
Have plenty of fresh water and soap nearby, in case battery acid contacts your skin, 2.8
clothing or eyes.
Wear complete eye and body protection, including safety goggles and protective 2.9
clothing. Avoid touching your eyes while working near the battery.
If battery acid contacts your skin or clothing, immediately wash the area with soap and 2.10
water. If acid enters your eye, immediately ood the eye with cold running water for at
least 10 minutes and get medical attention right away.
If battery acid is accidentally swallowed, drink milk, the whites of eggs or water. DO NOT 2.11
induce vomiting. Seek medical attention immediately.
PREPARING TO CHARGE3.
RISK OF CONTACT WITH BATTERY ACID. BATTERY ACID IS A
HIGHLY CORROSIVE SULFURIC ACID.
If it is necessary to remove the battery from the vehicle to 3.1
charge it, always remove the grounded terminal rst. Make sure all
of the accessories in the vehicle are off to prevent arcing.
Be sure the area around the battery is well ventilated while 3.2
the battery is being charged.
Clean the battery terminals before charging the battery. During cleaning, keep airborne 3.3
corrosion from coming into contact with your eyes, nose and mouth. Use baking soda
and water to neutralize the battery acid and help eliminate airborne corrosion. Do not
touch your eyes, nose or mouth.
Add distilled water to each cell until the battery acid reaches the level specied by the 3.4
battery manufacturer. Do not overll. For a battery without removable cell caps, such
as valve regulated lead acid batteries (VRLA), carefully follow the manufacturer’s
recharging instructions.
Read, understand and follow all instructions for the charger, battery, vehicle and any 3.5
equipment used near the battery and charger. Study all of the battery manufacturer’s
specic precautions while charging and recommended rates of charge.

Determine the voltage of the battery by referring to the vehicle owner’s manual and 3.6
make sure that the output voltage selector switch is set to the correct voltage. If the
charger has an adjustable charge rate, charge the battery in the lowest rate rst.
Make sure that the charger cable clips make tight connections.3.7

Locate the charger as far away from the 4.1
battery as the DC cables permit.
Never place the charger directly above the 4.2
battery being charged; gases from the battery will
corrode and damage the charger.
Do not set the battery on top of the charger.4.3
Never allow battery acid to drip onto the charger when reading the electrolyte specic 4.4
gravity or lling the battery.
Do not operate the charger in a closed-in area or restrict the ventilation in any way.4.5
DC CONNECTION PRECAUTIONS5.
Connect and disconnect the DC output clips only after setting all of the charger switches 5.1
to the “off” position (if applicable) and removing the AC plug from the electrical outlet.
Never allow the clips to touch each other.
Attach the clips to the battery and chassis, as indicated in sections 6 and 7.5.2
FOLLOW THESE STEPS WHEN BATTERY IS INSTALLED IN VEHICLE.6.
A SPARK NEAR THE BATTERY MAY CAUSE A
BATTERY EXPLOSION. TO REDUCE THE RISK
OF A SPARK NEAR THE BATTERY:
Position the AC and DC cables to reduce the 6.1
risk of damage by the hood, door and moving or hot
engine parts. NOTE: If it is necessary to close the
hood during the charging process, ensure that the hood does not touch the metal part of
the battery clips or cut the insulation of the cables.
Stay clear of fan blades, belts, pulleys and other parts that can cause injury.6.2
Check the polarity of the battery posts. The POSITIVE (POS, P, +) battery post usually 6.3
has a larger diameter than the NEGATIVE (NEG, N, -) post.
Determine which post of the battery is grounded (connected) to the chassis. If the 6.4
negative post is grounded to the chassis (as in most vehicles), see step 6.5. If the
positive post is grounded to the chassis, see step 6.6.
For a negative-grounded vehicle, connect the POSITIVE (RED) clip from the battery 6.5
charger to the POSITIVE (POS, P, +) ungrounded post of the battery. Connect the
NEGATIVE (BLACK) clip to the vehicle chassis or engine block away from the battery.
Do not connect the clip to the carburetor, fuel lines or sheet-metal body parts. Connect
to a heavy gauge metal part of the frame or engine block.
For a positive-grounded vehicle, connect the NEGATIVE (BLACK) clip from the battery 6.6
charger to the NEGATIVE (NEG, N, -) ungrounded post of the battery. Connect the
POSITIVE (RED) clip to the vehicle chassis or engine block away from the battery. Do
not connect the clip to the carburetor, fuel lines or sheet-metal body parts. Connect to a
heavy gauge metal part of the frame or engine block.
Connect charger AC supply cord to electrical outlet.6.7
When disconnecting the charger, turn all switches to off, disconnect the AC cord, remove 6.8
the clip from the vehicle chassis and then remove the clip from the battery terminal.
See CALCULATING CHARGE TIME for length of charge information.6.9

FOLLOW THESE STEPS WHEN BATTERY IS OUTSIDE VEHICLE.7.
A SPARK NEAR THE BATTERY MAY CAUSE A
BATTERY EXPLOSION. TO REDUCE THE RISK
OF A SPARK NEAR THE BATTERY:
Check the polarity of the battery posts. The 7.1
POSITIVE (POS, P, +) battery post usually has a
larger diameter than the NEGATIVE (NEG, N, -) post.
Attach at least a 24-inch (61 cm) long 6-gauge (AWG) insulated battery cable to the 7.2
NEGATIVE (NEG, N, -) battery post.
Connect the POSITIVE (RED) charger clip to the POSITIVE (POS, P, +) post of the battery.7.3
Position yourself and the free end of the cable you previously attached to the NEGATIVE 7.4
(NEG, N, -) battery post as far away from the battery as possible – then connect the
NEGATIVE (BLACK) charger clip to the free end of the cable.
Do not face the battery when making the nal connection. As stated in 7.4, face away 7.5
from the battery when connecting the negative clip to the cable.
Connect charger AC supply cord to electrical outlet.7.6
When disconnecting the charger, always do so in the reverse order of the connecting 7.7
procedure and break the rst connection while as far away from the battery as practical.
A marine (boat) battery must be removed and charged on shore. To charge it onboard 7.8
requires equipment specially designed for marine use.
GROUNDING AND AC POWER CORD CONNECTIONS8.
RISK OF ELECTRIC SHOCK OR FIRE.
This battery charger is for use on a 8.1
nominal 120-volt circuit and has a grounded plug
that looks like the plug illustrated. The charger
must be grounded to reduce the risk of electric
shock. The plug must be plugged into an outlet
that is properly installed and grounded in accordance with all local
codes and ordinances. The plug pins must t the receptacle (outlet).
Do not use with an ungrounded system.
8.2 Never alter the AC cord or plug provided – if it does not t the outlet,
have a proper grounded outlet installed by a qualied electrician. An improper
connection can result in a risk of an electric shock or electrocution. NOTE: Pursuant to
Canadian Regulations, use of an adapter plug is not allowed in Canada. Use of an
adapter plug in the United States is not recommended and should not be used.
Recommended minimum AWG size for extension cord:8.3

WHEEL CHARGER ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS FOR PSW-2035
It is important to fully assemble your charger before use. Remove all cord wraps and 10.1
uncoil the cables prior to using the battery charger. Follow these instructions for assembly.
Attach the Foot: Remove the charger from the packing materials
and place upside down on a at surface. Attach the foot and
secure it with the four ¼-20 thread cutting screws provided.
Assemble the Wheels and Axle: Hold the axle
upright on the oor or work surface. Then, using a
hammer, tap one of the axle caps onto the top end of
the axle. Be sure to tap the axle cap on straight. Slide
both wheels onto the axle with the recessed hubs
facing out as shown. Install the second axle cap.
Mount the Axle to the Charger:
Place one end of each bracket into the
slot on the bottom of the charger. Place
the axle assembly under each bracket.
Attach the brackets using the two,
10-32 thread cutting screws provided.
NOTE: Be careful not to drop the
brackets inside of the charger case.
Attach the Handle: If the charger came with a plastic grip, slide that
onto the handle until it is centered at the top. Turn the charger right
side up onto its foot and wheels. Align the handle so the screw holes
are aligned with the screw holes on the upper back corners
of the charger. Attach the handle using the four Phillips head
screws provided.
WHEEL CHARGER ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS FOR PSW-22, PSW-2550,
PSW-3060 AND PSW-61224
It is important to fully assemble your charger before use. Follow these instructions 10.2
for assembly.
Carefully lay the charger on its front to prepare for assembly.1.
Assemble the foot (Item 6) using two ¼-20 screws (Item 5) and tighten securely.2.
Attach the two axle brackets (Item 1) using one 10-32 screw (Item 4) in each. The 3.
brackets should have one end hooked into the slot in the charger base. Be careful
not to drop the brackets inside of the charger case. Do not completely tighten the
screws (Item 4) at this time.
Slide the axle (Item 2) into the brackets (Item 1) until centered on the charger.4.
Slide one wheel (Item 3) onto the axle with the recessed hub facing out as shown.5.
Insert the pin (Item 8) through the axle hole.6.
Repeat this process for the other wheel and when both wheels have been pinned to 7.
the axle, nish tightening the two axle bracket screws (Item 4).
Snap the axle caps (Item 7) onto each wheel to cover the pin and axle.8.
Lift the charger upright so that it rests on the wheels and foot.9.
Remove the two top side screws (Item 9) from each side of the charger.10.
Verify that the foam handle grip (Item 12) is on the handle assembly (Item 10). Install 11.
it if needed.
Insert the berglass clamp rod (Item 11) into the pierced holes on the inside of the 12.
handle (Item 10).
Align the handle assembly (Item 10) with the charger and reinstall the side screws 13.
(Item 9). Do not over tighten.
The charger assembly is now complete. The battery clips can be clamped to the 14.
berglass rod (Item 11) for convenient storage.
Do not attach the clips to the foam area of the handle; this will damage the foam grip.15.

NOTE: Not all controls are available on all models.
Timer
Timer Setting:• The timer allows you to set a specied time for charging. After the
timer expires, the charger stops charging your battery. The main function of the
timer is to prevent over charging while allowing a battery time to obtain a satisfactory
charge. To properly set the timer, you must know the size of the battery in ampere
hours or reserve capacity in minutes and the state of charge. It is important that you
determine the appropriate state of charge of your battery as specied in Section 13
and set the timer accordingly.
Hold:• This position defeats the timer function, allowing for continuous operation. Put
the timer in the HOLD position when you want to charge more than 2¼ hours. Be
sure to monitor the charging progress and stop it when the battery is charged. Not
doing so may cause damage to your battery or may cause other personal property
damage or personal injury.

Ammeter
The Ammeter indicates the amount of current, measured in amps, that is being drawn
by the battery. As a battery takes on a charge, it draws less current from the charger.
Correspondingly, the meter will show less current being drawn by the battery. When the
current stops decreasing, the battery is charged. The 2 amp charge rate may indicate some
activity on the meter, although the meter does not have the resolution to display this low rate.
Voltmeter
The voltmeter indicates the voltage at the battery terminals. The charger need not be
plugged into an AC outlet. The timer should be in the OFF position. Then connect the
charger following the instructions in sections 6 and 7. Observe the meter indication.
Keep in mind that this reading is only a battery voltage reading, a false surface
charge may mislead you. We suggest that you turn on the headlights for a couple of
minutes before you read the meter. Read it a couple of minutes after you have shut
the headlights off. If the reading is less than 10.5-volts, the battery may be bad or the
connection at the charger may be poor. If the reading is 10.5-volts to 12.8-volts, the
battery is low – recharge it. If the reading is above 12.8-volts, the battery is charged.
Charge Rate Selector Switch
Use the Charge Rate selector switch to select the charge rate or engine starting setting
you require.
1.5A, 2A, 4A and 5A Slow Charge Rate• – Intended for charging small batteries such
as those commonly used in garden tractors, snowmobiles and motorcycles.
10A, 20A, 30A and 35A Fast and 40A, 60A, 65A and 80A Rapid Charge Rate• –
Use for charging automotive, marine and deep-cycle batteries. Not intended for
industrial applications.
125A, 180A, 200A, 225A, 250A and 300A Engine Start• – Provides high amperage
for cranking an engine with a weak or run down battery. Always use in combination
with a battery.
Model PSW-2035 employs 2 toggle switches:
Switch #1• – Use this switch to select the 200 Amp Engine Start and the 35 Amp
Charge Rate. Switch #2 must be in the down position (Select Position) when using
Switch #1.
Switch #2 – Use this switch to select the 2 amp Charge Rate and the OFF position. •
Also, use to select use of Switch #1. Note that Switch #1 is only effective when
Switch #2 is set to “Select Position.”
Model PSW-61224 employs a 7-position rotary switch.
You may select the output voltages of 6, 12, or 24 volts for charging the batteries of •
those voltages or battery combinations connected in series (not parallel) in which
the sum of the battery voltages adds up to the range selected. Each voltage range
offers a high or low amp charge rate. The higher charge rate is more suitable for fast
charging a battery to the point where it will start a vehicle, the lower (slower) charge
rate is more suitable for fully charging (restoring) a battery. (See the Input/Output
Chart on the Battery Charger.)
Voltage Selector Switch
Use this switch to set the scale of the voltmeter to either 6 volt and 12 volt DC to match
the battery or batteries being charged. NOTE: This does not change the output voltage
of the charger.
Battery Load Tester Switch (Model PSW-3060 only)
Use this switch to apply a load to the battery when testing it. (See Using the Battery
Load Tester Feature section.)
Ensure that all of the charger components are in place and in good working 1.
condition, including the plastic boots on the battery clips. Make sure the electrolyte
(battery liquid) in each cell is at the correct level.
Set the charge rate selector switch (switch #2) to the OFF position.2.
Connect the battery following the precautions listed in Sections 6 and 7.3.
Connect the AC power following the precautions listed in Section 8.4.
Place the charge rate selector switches (switch #1 and #2) in the preferred position.5.

For the 2A charge rate, switch #1 is not used and switch #2 should be toggled up.•
For the 35A charge rate, both switches (#1 and #2) should be toggled down.•
To disconnect the charger, reverse the procedure.6.
NOTE: This is a manual charger and will overcharge a battery if permitted to operate for
extended periods of time. Monitor the charging often.
Charging (Models PSW-22, PSW 2550, PSW-3060 and PSW-61224)

Using the Engine Start feature
Your battery charger can be used to jumpstart your car if the battery is low. Follow these
instructions on how to use the ENGINE START feature.

Using the ENGINE START feature WITHOUT a battery installed in the
vehicle could cause damage to the vehicle’s electrical system. NOTE: If you have
charged the battery and it still will not start your car, do not use the engine start feature,
or it could damage the vehicle’s electrical system.
Set the charge rate switch and the timer to the OFF position.1.
With the charger unplugged from the AC outlet, connect the charger to the battery 2.
following the instructions given in Section 6 (FOLLOW THESE STEPS WHEN THE
BATTERY IS INSTALLED IN A VEHICLE).
Plug the charger AC power cord into the AC outlet, and then move the timer switch 3.
from OFF to the HOLD position.
With the charger plugged in and connected to the battery of the vehicle, set the 4.
charge rate selector switch to the engine start position.
NOTE: For Model PSW-2035, switch #1 should be toggled up and switch #2 should be
toggled down.
Crank the engine until it starts or 3.5 seconds pass. If the engine does not start, wait 5.
3 minutes before cranking again. This allows the charger and battery to cool down.
NOTE: During extremely cold weather, or if the battery is under 2 volts, charge the
battery for 5 minutes before cranking the engine.
If the engine fails to start, charge the battery for 5 more minutes before attempting to 6.
crank the engine again.
After the engine starts, move the charge rate selector switch to the OFF position and 7.
unplug the AC power cord before disconnecting the battery clips from the vehicle.
Clean and store the charger in a dry location.8.
NOTE: If the engine does turn over but never starts, there is not a problem with the
starting system; there is a problem somewhere else with the vehicle. STOP cranking the
engine until the other problem has been diagnosed and corrected.

Using the Battery Voltage Tester
Overview
This battery charger has a built-in voltmeter to test your battery’s state of charge. A
recently charged battery could have a temporarily high voltage due to what is known
as “surface charge”. The voltage of such a battery will gradually drop during the period
immediately after the charging system is disengaged. Consequently, the tester could
display inconsistent values for such a battery. For a more accurate reading, the surface
charge should be removed by temporarily creating a load on the battery, such as by
turning on lights or other accessories for a couple of minutes before you read the
display. Read it a couple of minutes after you have shut the headlights off.
Testing Sequence: There are ve basic steps required to test the battery state of charge:
With the charger unplugged from the AC outlet, connect the charger to the battery 1.
following the instructions given in Sections 6 and 7.
Select the correct setting of the meter (6V or 12V) to match the battery to be tested.2.
Set the charge rate switch and the timer to the OFF position.3.
Plug the charger AC power cord into the AC outlet, following the instructions given in 4.
Section 8.
Read the voltage on the voltmeter.5.
Using the Alternator Performance Tester
Overview
This battery charger has a built-in alternator tester that displays an estimate of the
alternator’s relative output compared to normal alternators. The alternator % values
displayed should be taken as a general reference, not a precise diagnosis. The
alternator tester functions the same as the built-in battery voltage tester (see previous
section for details) with a few differences.
Testing Sequence: There are ve basic steps required to operate this unit as an
alternator tester:
With the charger unplugged from the AC outlet, connect the charger to the battery 1.
following the instructions given in Sections 6 and 7.
Select the correct setting of the meter (6V or 12V) to match the battery to be tested.2.
Set the charge rate switch and the timer to the OFF position.3.
Start the vehicle and turn on the vehicle’s headlights. Read the voltage on the voltmeter.4.
Using the Battery Load Tester Feature (PSW-3060 only)
Overview
Load testing is the process of putting demand on a system or device and measuring
its response.
Testing Sequence: There are ve basic steps required to load test a battery.
Conrm that the charger is not plugged in.1.
Select the correct setting of the meter (6V or 12V) to match the battery to be tested.2.
Set the charge rate switch and the timer to the OFF position.3.
Connect the battery following the precautions listed in Sections 6 and 7.4.
Press the Load Switch to LOAD ON for 10 seconds while reading the voltmeter.5.
Green – Indicates the battery capacity is OK. The battery may or may not be fully
charged. Check the specic gravity to determine the state of charge. If the specic
gravity shows less than a full charge, check for an electrical drain on the battery or for
possible charging system problems. Recharge the battery to full charge.
Yellow or Red, but the needle remains steady – Indicates that the battery capacity is
not satisfactory. The battery may be either defective or not fully charged. Check the
specic gravity of the battery to see which condition exists. If charging does not bring the
battery up to a full charge, the battery should be replaced.
Yellow or Red, but the needle continues to fall – Indicates the battery may be defective
or rundown. Release the load switch, and note the voltmeter reaction. Voltage recovery
into the green or above within seconds indicates a defective battery. A slow recovery
indicates a rundown condition. For best results, check the specic gravity of the battery.

General Charging Notes
Fan: The charger is designed to control its cooling fan for efcient operation.
Consequentially, it is normal for the fan to start and stop when maintaining a fully
charged battery. Keep the area near the charger clear of obstructions to allow the fan to
operate efciently.
Voltage: The voltage displayed during charging is the charging voltage and is usually
higher than the battery’s resting voltage.
CALCULATING CHARGE TIME13.
Use the table below to more accurately determine the time it will take to bring a battery
to full charge. First, identify where your battery ts into the chart.
NR means that the charger setting is NOT RECOMMENDED.
Find your battery’s rating on the chart, and note the charge time given for each charger
setting. The times given are for batteries with a 50% charge prior to recharging. Add
more time for severely discharged batteries.

After use and before performing maintenance, unplug and disconnect the battery 14.1
charger (see Sections 6, 7 and 8).
Use a dry cloth to wipe all battery corrosion and other dirt or oil from the terminals, 14.2
cords, and the charger case.
Ensure that all of the charger components are in place and in good working condition, 14.3
including the plastic boots on the battery clips.
Servicing does not require opening the unit, as there are no user-serviceable parts.14.4
STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS15.
Store the charger unplugged, in an upright position. The cord will still conduct electricity 15.1
until it is unplugged from the outlet.
Store inside, in a cool, dry place.15.2
Store the clips on the berglass clamp rod. Do not store them on the handle, clipped 15.3
together, on or around metal, or clipped to the cables.

BEFORE RETURNING FOR REPAIRS17.
When a charging problem arises, make certain that the battery is capable of accepting 17.1
a normal charge. Double check all connections, the AC outlet for a full 120-volts, the
charger clips for correct polarity and the quality of the connections from the cables to the
clips and from the clips to the battery system. The clips must be clean.
When a battery is very cold, partially charged or sulfated, it will not draw the full rated 17.2
amperes from the charger. It is both dangerous and damaging to a battery to force
higher amperage into it than it can effectively use in recharging.
When an UNKNOWN OPERATING PROBLEM arises, please read the complete manual and 17.3
call the customer service number for information that will usually eliminate the need for return.
