Get Started

The following topics give you all the information you need to set up your phone and Sprint service t he first time.

Your Phone at a Glance

The following illustration outlines your phone’s primary features.
Get Started 1

Set Up Your Phone

Before using your new phone, you must install and ch arge the battery. If desired, you may also take the opportunity to install an optional memory card (not included).
Note: Your phone’s battery should have enough charge to turn th e phone on and find a signal, complete the setup wizard, set up voicemail, and make a call. You should fully charge the battery as soon as possible.
Remove the Back Cover
Carefully remove the back cover from the phone.
1. Remove the back cover using the slot in the upper left corner of your phone.
2. Carefully lift the cover.
Warning: Do not bend or twist the back cover excessively . Doing so may damage the cover.

Install a Memory Card (Optional)
You can use an optional microSD or microSDHC mem ory card (not included) to expand available memory space.
Carefully slide the memory card into the memory card socket (as shown) until the card locks into place. Make sure that the card’s gold contacts face int o t he phone and that the card is positioned as shown.
Install the Battery
Follow these instructions for installing the batt ery .
Insert the battery, aligning the gold contacts on the battery with the gold contacts on the phone, and gently press the battery into place.

Replace the Back Cover
Follow these instructions for replacing the back cover.
Replace the battery compartment cover, making sure all the tabs are secure and there are no gaps around the cover.

Charge the Battery
For fastest charging times, use the Adaptiv e F ast Charging charger that came with your phone. This charger provides faster charging only when connect ed to devices that have Adaptive Fast Charging.
3. Plug the USB cable into the Charger/Accessory Port on the bottom of the phone.
4. Plug the other end of the USB cable into the Adaptive Fast Charging charger, and then plug the charger into an electrical outlet to charge your battery.

Activate Your Phone

Follow the instructions below to activate your phone i f it has not already been activated. Depending on your account or how and where you purchased your phone, i t m ay be ready to use or you may need to activate it on your Sprint account.
If you purchased your phone at a Sprint Store, it i s probably activated and ready to use.
If you received your phone in the mail and it is for a new Sprint account or a new line of service, it
is designed to activate automatically. When you turn the phone on for the first time, y ou should see a Hands Free Activation
screen, which may be followed by a PRL Update screen an d a Firmware Update screen. Follow the onscreen instructions to continue.
If you received your phone in the mail and you are acti vating a new phone for an existing number on your account (you’re swapping phones), you can activate on your computer online or directly on your phone.
Activate on your computer:
Go to sprint.com/activate and complete the online instructions to activate your phone.

Activate on your phone:
Turn on your new phone. (Make sure the old one is turne d off.) Your phone will automatically attempt Hands-Free Activation.
Tap Activate to override auto-activati on and start the manual activation wizard.
Follow the onscreen prompts to complete the activ ation process.
To confirm activation, make a phone call. If your phone is still not activated, visit sprint.com/support for assistance. If you do not have access to the Internet, call Sprint Customer Service at 1-888-211-4727 from another phone.
Tip: Do not press the Power/Lock key while the phone is being activated. Pressing the Power/Lock key cancels the activation process.
Note: If you are having any difficulty with activation, visit sprint.com/support.

Complete the Setup

After you turn on your phone and activate it, your phone displays a Welcome screen. From the Welcome screen follow the prompts to set up features and pref erences on your phone.
Note: In some cases, you may be able to complete the setup process bef ore y our phone has been activated on your Sprint account.
1. At the Welcome screen, follow the onscreen instructions to configure your phone’s b asic options, such as language, date and time, Wi-Fi connect ions, location settings, etc.
Tap & Go: With this optional feature, you can copy Google Accounts, backed up apps, and
data from an existing Android device. Follow the p rompts to use Tap & Go, or tap SKIP to continue with manual setup.
Google Account: Many of your phone’s applications, such a s Gmail, Google Maps, Google
Hangouts, and the Google Play Store, require a Google Account. To use these applications, you must set up your Google Account on your phone. Complete the steps to sign in to your current Google Account, or sign up for a new Google Account.
Samsung account: Your Samsung account is used for access to GALAXY Apps and
services. Complete the steps to sign in to your current Samsung account, or sign up for a new Samsung account.
Easy mode: If you are a first time smartphone user, you can us e a sim pl er Home screen
layout, larger text and icons to simplify your initial s martphone experience.
2. Tap FINISH to complete setup. You may see a series of informational or update screens. Fol l ow the prompts to continue.

Note: During or after setup, you may see a Connections Optimizer notice. Read the notice and then tap I AGREE to allow your phone to connect automatically to the best available data network, i ncluding Wi-Fi.
To turn Connections Optimizer off at any time, from home tap networks > Mobile networks > Connections optimizer and unche ck the Connections optimizer box. See Mobile Networks Settings for details.

Set Up Voicemail

Your phone automatically transfers all unansw ered calls to voicemail, even if your phone is in use or turned off. You should set up your Sprint Voicemail and personal greeting as soon as your phone is activated. Always use a password to protect against unauth ori zed acce ss.
Note: Voicemail Password – Sprint strongly recommends that you create a password when setting up your voicemail to protect against unauthorized access. Without a password, anyone who has acce ss t o your phone is able to access your voicemail messages.
1. From a Home screen, tap If your screen is locked, press the Power/Lock key to turn on the display and then swipe your
screen in any direction. See Turn Your Screen On and Off.

Sprint Account Information and Help

Find out about account passwords and information about managing your account and finding help.

Sprint Account Passwords

You will need to create passwords to protect access to your personal account information, your voicemail account, and your data services account. As a Sprint customer, you enjoy unlimited access to all your information.
Account User Name and Password
If you are the account owner, you will create an account user name and password when you sign on to
sprint.com/mysprint. (Click either Sign in or Register to get started.) If you are not the account owner (if
someone else receives the bill for your Sprint servi ce), you can get a sub-account password at
sprint.com/mysprint.
Voicemail Password
You will create your voicemail password when you set up your voicemail. See Voicemail Setup for more information on your voicemail password.
Data Services Password
With your Sprint phone, you may elect to set up an optional data services password to control ac cess and authorize purchases.

Sprint Support Services

Sprint 411 and Sprint Operator Services let y ou easily access information and calling assistance from your Sprint phone.
Sprint 411
Sprint 411 gives you access to a variety of services and informati on, including residential, business, and government listings; movie listings or show tim es; driving directions, restaurant reservatio ns, and major local event information. You can get up to three piece s of information per call, and the operator can automatically connect your call at no additional ch arge.
There is a per-call charge to use Sprint 411, and you will be billed for airtime.

Sprint Operator Services provides assistance wh en you place collect calls or when you place calls billed to a local telephone calling card or third party.

Phone Basics

Your phone is packed with features that simplify your life and expand your ability to stay connected t o the people and information that are important to y ou. The following topics will introduce the basic fu nct i ons and features of your phone.

Your Phone’s Layout

Features

The following list defines the features listed in the above illustrations.
Back Key: Returns to the previous screen, or close a dialog box, o ptions menu, the Notification Panel, or onscreen keyboard.
Camera: Takes pictures and record videos.
Earpiece: Lets you hear the caller and automated pro m pts during calls.
Flash: Helps illuminate subjects in low-light environments when the camera is focusing and
capturing a photo or video.
Front Camera: Allows you to take pictures and videos of yourself.
Headset Jack: Allows you to plug in either a stereo head set or an optional headset for convenient, hands-free conversations.

Heart Rate Sensor: Measures your heart rate when you hold your finger over the sensor, for use with apps like S Health
®
.
Home Key/Finger Scanner: Returns to the Home screen. The Home Key can also act as a fingerprint scanner for security (unlock) and other applications.
Infrared Transmitter: Controls other devices, such as a TV.
LED Indicator: Glows or blinks in different colors to show status when the screen is turned off.
The LED glows red when charging, and blinks red wh en the battery is low; blinks blue when there’s a new notification, or when you are recording voice with the screen turned off; and glows green when the battery is fully charged and the phone is attached to a charger.
Light Sensor: Detects the ambient light level, such as when setting screen b rightness when Automatic brightness is enabled, and when using the Camera.
Microphones: Allow other callers to hear you when you are using the phone or the speakerphone, and captures sound during recordin g.
Power/Lock Key: Turns the phone or screen on or off, or locks the screen. Press and hold for a Device options menu, where you can turn the phone off, restart the phone, enable Airplane mode, and enable Emergency Mode.
Proximity Sensor: Detects the presence of objects near the phone, such as when using air gestures or motion settings. For example, while talking on the phone, the sensor detects whe n i t’s near your ear and turns off the screen to prevent acci dental key presses.
Recent Apps Key: Displays a list of apps you’ve used recentl y. Press and hold to configure the Home screen.
Speaker: Plays ringtones and sounds. The speaker also lets you hear the caller’s voice in speakerphone mode.
USB Charger/Accessory Port: Connects the charger/USB cable (included) and other optional accessories (not included).
Volume Key: Adjusts the volume of your phone’s sounds. From the Home sc reen, press to adjust master volume. During calls or playback, press to adjust volume. Press to mute the ringtone of an incoming call.
Caution: Inserting an accessory into the incorrect jack may damage the phone.

Turn Your Phone On and Off

Use the Power/Lock key to turn the phone on or off.

Press and hold the Power/Lock key.
Turn the Phone Off
1. Press and hold the Power/Lock key to display the De vice option s menu.
2. Tap Power off > POWER OFF to turn the phone off.
The screen remains blank while your phone is off. If the phone is off during charging, the screen displays a charging animation.

Turn Your Screen On and Off

Your phone allows you to quickly turn the screen off when not in use and to turn it back on and unlock it when you need it.
Turn the Screen Off When Not in Use
To quickly turn the screen off, press the Power/Lock key. Pressing the Power/Lock key again will turn on the screen and display the lock screen.
To save battery power, the phone automatically t urns off the screen (times out) after a certain period of time when you leave it idle. You will still be able to receive messages and calls while the phone’s screen is off.
Note: For information on how to adjust the time before the screen turns off, see Screen Timeout.
Turn the Screen On and Unlock It
1. To turn the screen on, press the Power/Lock key.
2. Unlock the screen:
If you are using the default screen lock, swipe the screen in any direction to unl ock it.  If you have set up a screen lock, use your screen lock. See Screen Lock.

Touchscreen Navigation

Your phone’s touchscreen lets you control actions through a variety of touch gestures.
Tap
When you want to type using the onscreen keyboard, select items onscreen such as application and settings icons, or other items, simply tap them with your finger.
Touch and Hold
To open the available options for an item (for example, a cont act or link in a Web page), touch and hold the item.

Swipe or Slide
To swipe or slide means to quickly drag your finger v ert i cally or horizontally across the screen.
Drag
To drag, touch and hold your finger with some pre ssure before you start to move your finger. While dragging, do not release your finger until you hav e reached the target position.

Flick
Flicking the screen is similar to swiping, except that you need to swipe your finger in light, quick strokes. This finger gesture is always in a vertical direction, such as when flicking the contacts or message list.
Rotate
For most screens, you can automatically change the screen orientation from portrait to landscape by turning the phone sideways. When entering text, you can turn the phone sideways to bring up a bigger keyboard.
Note: You can control screen rotation with the Screen rotation setting. To make this selection, from home tap
more information.

Pinch and Spread
“Pinch” the screen using your thumb and forefinger t o zoom out or “spread” the screen to zoom in when viewing a picture or a Web page. (Move fingers inwa rd to zoom out and outward to zoom in.)
Tip: Pinching any Home screen will show you options to customize Home scree ns, or tap a thumbnail to go straight to another screen.

Your Home Screen

The Home screen is the starting point for your phone’s applications, functions, and menus. You can customize your Home screen by adding application icons, shortcuts, folders, widgets, and more. The Home screen extends beyond the initial screen. Swipe the screen left or right to display additional screens.
Note: The indicator near the bottom of the screen shows your current screen position. Tip: Press the Home Key to return to the main Home screen from any other screen.

You can customize your Home screen by adding short cut s, f ol ders, widgets, and more.
Create a Shortcut
Use shortcuts to launch an app from the Home screen.
1. From a Home screen, tap

Primary shortcuts are the Phone, Contacts, Messages, Internet, and Apps shortcuts that appear at the bottom of the Home screen by default. You can remov e or replace any of your primary shortcuts, ex cept the Apps shortcut.

Add a Widget
Widgets are self-contained apps that display on a Home screen. Unlike a shortcut, the Widget works like as an onscreen application. There are all kinds of widgets, including links to a specific contact, I nternet bookmarks, Gmail and email accounts, and many others.
1. From a Home screen, pinch the screen. – or – Touch and hold an empty space on the screen.
