2. Backlit Display Screen: The Display screen contains two a re a s :

3. Headset Connector: This is where you connect the optional headset. The headset includes an earpiece and m i c rophone in a conve n i e n t ,l i g h t weight unit so you can c o nve rse without using your hands.

6. LED Indicator: Flashes to indicate an incoming call or m e s s age . When you have the phone closed and the ri n ge r set to off,the LED indicator will notify you that you have an incoming call or message .
The LED also lights up (flashes) for a few seconds when
you turn on the phone.
7. A n t e n n a : M a kes the call sound cl e a rest when it’s fully ex t e n d e d .Your antenna is easily replaced by just screw i n g in a new one.

Turning your Samsung Phone On and Off
To Turn it On
When yo u ’re re a dy to turn your phone on,f u l ly extend the antenna for best re c e p t i o n .S i m p ly press and thre e things happen;the LED comes on,the phone beeps,and the s t a rtup graphics begin to play. The phone will search for a s i g n a l ;when a signal is fo u n d ,the icon appears and the phone enters Standby mode.You can make and re c e i ve calls n ow.
To Turn it Off
To turn your phone off,p ress and hold until the powe r o ff graphics begin to play ;t h e n ,the power off sound play s , and the display goes bl a n k .Notice that when the phone is o ff,nothing is displayed on the scre e n .
N o t e : If is pressed for less than one second,the phone will not turn off. This helps keep your phone from being t u rned off accidentally.

The Top Line of the Display
D i s p l ay indicators (or icons) appear across the top of yo u r p h o n e ’s display scre e n .The Signal Strength and Battery S t rength icons always appear,other icons appear based on your phone’s operating mode.
Signal Stre n g t h : This icon always appears when yo u r phone is on and shows your current signal stre n g t h . M o re lines indicate greater signal stre n g t h .Four lines indicate maximum stre n g t h ,and one line indicates least stre n g t h .

S e rvice Indicator: This icon indicates a call is in p ro gre s s .If there is tro u ble with signal stre n g t h ,t h i s indicator will have a diagonal line through it.S e e b e l ow under “No service indicator”for a descri p t i o n of this situation.
No Service Indicator: This icon indicates your phone cannot find a signal because yo u ’re outside a serv i c e a re a . When this is displaye d ,you cannot make or re c e i ve calls.Wait a little while for a signal or move into an open are a .

D i g i t a l : Indicates that the phone is in Digital mode. For Data/Fax calls,Web Browser calls,t ra n s m i t t i n g m e s s age s ,and Voice Dialing,the phone must be in d i gital mode.
Vibrator on:This icon indicates that an incoming call will vibrate the phone rather than ring it. This fe a­t u re can be used for quiet situations where you don’t want your ri n ger to disturb others or for loud situa­tions where the ri n ger cannot be heard .
B a t t e ry Stre n g t h :This icon shows the level of yo u r b a t t e ry ch a rge . The more bl a ck bars you see,t h e greater the ch a rge .When the battery becomes ve ry l ow,an empty box a p p e a rs and the phone flashes an alert ;this indicates that your phone is about to turn itself off.

Using the battery
Your Samsung Phone comes pack aged with a part i a l ly ch a rge d ,re ch a rge able Lithium Ion (LiIon) battery so that yo u can use your phone immediately after it is activa t e d .
Installing the battery
To attach the battery to your Samsung Phone:
1 . Align the tabs at the bottom of
the battery with the corre s p o n d­ing slots in the phone.
2 . Push the battery down until yo u
hear a cl i ck .
Removing the battery
To re m ove the battery from your Samsung Phone:
1 . Tu rn the phone off. 2 . Push up and hold the catch of the
phone and lift the battery away.

Charging the Battery
You can easily tell if your battery needs to be re ch a rged by ch e cking the indicator in the upper-right corner of yo u r p h o n e ’s display. The presence of all three bars indicates a full ch a rge ,t wo bars indicates a smaller ch a rge ,and one bar indi­cates an even smaller ch a rge .No bars (the battery icon is empty) means your battery must be ch a rge d .
When the battery ch a rge level gets low,the battery sensor blinks an empty battery icon ( ) ,sounds a tone,and dis­p l ays a message .If the battery level gets too low,the phone will turn off automatically.U n fo rt u n a t e ly,if this happens yo u ’l l lose whatever you are doing,i n cluding dropping your call. Wa t ch the battery strength icon and make sure your battery is a d e q u a t e ly ch a rge d .

Charging with the Travel Charger
Your phone is powe red by a re ch a rge able Li-lon battery. A t ravel ch a rger is provided with your phone.Use only a p p roved batteries and ch a rge rs . Ask your local SAMSUNG dealer for further details.
The phone can be used while the battery is ch a rgi n g . N o t e : You must fully ch a rge the battery befo re using yo u r
phone for the fi rst time. 1 . Connect the lead from the travel ch a rger to the bottom of
the phone.C h e ck that arrow on the lead connector is fa c­ing towa rds the front of the phone.
2 . Connect the ch a rger to a standard AC wall outlet.
When the battery is ch a rgi n g ,the battery icon in the top right-hand corner of the display fills re p e a t e d ly.
3 . When ch a rging is fi n i s h e d ,disconnect the adapter fro m
the power outlet. Disconnect the adapter from the phone by pressing the grey tabs on either side of the connector and pulling the connector out.

Your Phone’s Modes
Standby Mode
S t a n d by is the re a dy state of your Samsung Phone.The phone goes into Standby mode soon after you turn it on,or whenev­er you bri e fly press at any time.When your phone is in S t a n d by mode,you will see the greeting (that’s the message d i s p l ayed when you turn on your phone). If you enter a phone nu m b e r,you can press to dial it,or press t o s ave it in the Phone Book.
P ress at any time to re t u rn to Standby mode. Be care­f u l ;if yo u ’re on a call when you press ,yo u ’ll re t u rn to S t a n d by mode,but it also disconnects the call.P ress s eve ral times or hold it down to re t u rn to Standby mode without ending the call.
The Main Menu is accessed when you are in Standby mode. See “ Your Phone’s Main Menu ”on page 115 for a listing of the Main Menu .
Conversation Mode
You can place and answer calls only when your Samsung Phone is powe red on.D u ring a call,the phone is in C o nve rsation mode.

Power Save Mode
Your Samsung Phone comes with a Power Save fe a t u re that will automatically be activated if your phone is unable to fi n d a signal after 10 minutes of search i n g .While this fe a t u re is a c t i ve ,the phone’s battery ch a rge is conserve d . After the phone enters Power Save mode,it will automatically re ch e ck for a signal about eve ry three minu t e s . A message on the dis­p l ay will let you know when your phone is operating in Power Save mode.
Home Zone Display
N o t e :
This function is available only if supported by your service
provider. Upon power up,when receiving or originating a call,or when a
hand-off occurs while moving,if your phone is located in your Home Zone it will display“LOCAL”,and if located out of the Home Zone it will display“MOBILE”.
Billing of your calls processed within the Home Zone differs from calls processed out of the Home Zone.

Making a Voice Call

Your phone makes seve ral kinds of calls (vo i c e ,fa x ,d a t a , and MiniBrow s e r ) . This section explains voice calling only.Fo r Fax or Data calls see “ Fax and Data Calls”on page 101.For we b b rowser calls see “The MiniBrow s e r ”on page 102.
To place a voice call: 1 . P ress to power on your Samsung Phone.If you see
i n d i c a t o rs on the display,this indicates your phone is on. Note that you will not hear a dial tone.
2 . Enter the phone number (up to 32 digits) by pressing the
d i git key s . The phone number displays from right to left.
3 . P ress . The phone places the call to the entere d
phone number (if service is ava i l abl e ) .
You can also make voice calls;

Redialing Calls
To redial the last call you made,p ress twice quick ly. Yo u can also redial any of your last 10 incoming or outgoing calls by accessing the Call Logs listings (see “ Keeping Tra ck of Yo u r C a l l s ”on page 85).

Correcting Dialing Mistakes
To correct a misdialed digi t ( s ) :
P ress to erase one digit at a time.
You can erase all the digits at once by pressing a n d
holding it down for one second. This re t u rns your phone to Standby mode where you can try your call ag a i n .
Ending a Call
To end a call,close the flip cover or press . If you pre s s
,the call time (length of the call) flashes bri e fly,and the phone re t u rns to Standby mode automatically after a few sec­o n d s .
Incoming Call Notification
Your Samsung Phone signals an incoming call or message in the fo l l owing way s :
The backlight illuminates.
The red LED fl a s h e s .
The ri n ger sounds (unless the ri n ger is set to Vi b rate or
O ff ) .
Incoming call notification continues until one of the fo l l ow­ing occurs :
You answer the call.
You press ,or silence the ri n ger befo re answe ring the call.
The calling party ends the call.

Answering a Call
T h e re are four ways to answer an incoming call! D o n ’t wo rry - they ’re all easy. You can answer a call by :
p ressing if the flip cover is alre a dy open.
opening the flip cover (if set in the Main Menu ) .
p ressing any key except ,when the A ny Key A n swe r
option is selected in the Main Menu .
using Auto A n swe r.See “Automatic A n swe r ”on page 29.
Your phone is preset to answer when you press the key.You can easily ch a n ge how your phone answe rs by set­ting the A ny key A n swer fe a t u re (press ) and m a ke your selection.For more info rmation on this fe a t u re see “A ny key A n swe r ”on page 29.
Adjusting Ring Volume
In Standby mode,you can quick ly adjust the ri n ger vo l u m e by pressing the volume key ( ) on the side of the p h o n e . T h e re are eight levels and a zero or “ R i n ger Off”l eve l .
Yo u ’ll see a graphical indication as yo u ch a n ge the vo l u m e .
The illustration shown here is the maximu m volume setting.
the up key turns it up and the down key turns it dow n .
P ress and hold to continu o u s ly move up or dow n .
Tu rning it all the way down is a quick way to mute the
ri n ger for those important times when you want yo u r phone quiet.When you do this,“ R i n ger Off’will display in S t a n d by mode.
You can also save the settings for the ri n ger volume using
the Main Menu (see “ R i n ger Options”on page 45).

Silencing the Ringer on an Incoming Call
When your Samsung Phone ri n g s ,p ress or t o silence the ri n ge r. You can also set the ri n ger to remain off by using the Main Menu (see “Ring Volume Setting for all Incoming Calls”on page 46).
Setting the Ringer Type
Your phone has nu m e rous options for how it ri n g s . To set these options,see “ R i n ger Options”on page 45. You can eve n set diffe rent rings for up to fi ve people who call you often (see “ D i ffe rential Ring”on page 48).
To Mute the Microphone During a Call
You can mute the microphone during conve rsation by select­ing the Mute option from the In Use Menu . When active , “ M U T E ”d i s p l ay s ,and the other party cannot hear conve rs a­tion at your end of the call. The phone resets this condition to the default Unmute setting at the end of your call.

Using Caller ID
N o t e : See your service provider about activating Caller ID s e rv i c e .
This fe a t u re tells you who is calling you by displaying the c a l l e r ’s number when the phone ri n g s . If a caller’s name and number are stored in your Phone Book,the corre s p o n d i n g name is also displaye d .If you call someone who has this fe a­t u re ,your phone number will be displayed on their phone.
