Samsung LCD TV’s Schematic

This material will explain the LCD display technology used in Samsung televisions and large format display (LFD) monitors. The training includes circuit explanations, troubleshooting procedures, new features and design changes as well as alignment procedures. The material is not written for a specific model, it is an overview of LCD technology used in TVs and large format displays. Certification for this course is available by accessing the 2009 LCD Certification Exam online.

The material is broken into modules to allow direct access to specific topics.

2

Depending on the model design changes and features have been added to enhance the customers viewing experience. This includes a new panel designs, an innovative mounting system, and additional multimedia content options.

3

Traditional LCD TV’s use a series of Fluorescent tubes for backlights. These tubes use high voltage and a phosphor coating to generate light . The FL tubes and circuitry behind the panel increases the depth of the rear cabinet

4

The LEDs are arranged on the perimeter of the panel assembly. The individual

LEDs are connected in series with two sets of LEDS, one for each side of the screen. The back of the panel uses three reflective layers and unique lens assembly that distribute the light across the entire panel. Three benefits are smaller size, a simplified power supply and less power consumption.

5

Certain Samsung LCD units improve the refresh rate to 240Hz. The 240 Hz refresh rate helps make motion sequences smoother with less motion blur and jitter. The faster refresh rate specifically targets “judder” which occurs when films shot at 24 frames per second are converted to TV which normally uses 30 frames per second. The 240Hz refresh rate also can smooth artifacts that can be created by fast image motion.

6

When films shot at 24 Frames per seconds are displayed at 30 frames per second on a TV the missing 6 frames causes images to jump or “judder”. The 240 Hz refresh rate smoothes the picture removing “judder” from 24 frame per second film transfers. The 240 Hz refresh rate doubles the number of frames inserted compared to the previous 120Hz designs. The interpolated frames reduces the time between frames from 6.5 mS to 3.8 mS.

7

The Ultra Clear panel improves picture quality by reducing ambient light that is reflected back to the viewer. An anti reflective coating inverts the phase of the incoming light when it is reflected. The In phase and out of phase waves cancel so only the light from the panel is sent to the viewer.

A feature on certain LCD TV in 2008 was internet connectivity for RSS news feeds. This feature has been expanded to include expanded content. The Internet Widget System offers a compelling and powerful information and entertainment experience to consumers. Taking advantage of the capabilities of Internet-enabled TVs, TV

Widgets are connected to applications that consumers can personalize and enjoy while simultaneously watching live video or other media on their DTVs.

9

The widgets can be configured along the bottom of the screen or as a side bar showing information along with the live video in the main picture window

10

Widgets are available for entertainment programming like CBS, Showtime and Netflix. Information sites like the New York Times or Yahoo News and social networking sites like MySpace and Twitter. New widgets are being developed constantly.

11

Samsung will be offering an accessory wall mount. The slim design reduces the depth from 6.8” to 1.8” . The Photo frame wall mount uses a design similar to the method used to hang paintings.

12

The Photo Frame wall mount uses a pair of mounting blocks along with a aircraft grade Kevlar cable that can support over 400 lbs. This new mount offers a simple method of installation and reduces the depth of the installation compared to traditional wall mounts.

13

The installation procedure involves wall mounting two base units and attaching a Kevlar wire in the upper mounting holes. Two tilt up legs allow the customer to connect various sources without having to pull the TV from the wall.

14

Wall anchors and toggle bolts are provided to secure the mount base to the wall. Bolts are provided to secure the Kevlar wire to the TV.

15

Certain Samsung TV are shipped with preloaded movies or image contents. The library includes games short movies and information pieces such as recipes or fitness. On certain models additional content can be downloaded from Samsung.com

Wiselink offers a USB 2.0 connection to view Jpeg images or listen to MP3 audio files. Wiselink Pro adds the capability to view MPEG video files that have been stored on a USB storage device. Wiselink Pro supports MP4, MPG, AVI , VRO and VOB file formats. Series 5 through Series 9 models support this feature.

Under the setup menu select the Network selection” then set the value to “Cable Network Setup” then press enter.

Next select “Internet Protocol Setup”, since an IP address, subnet mask, gateway, and DNS are automatically allocated when DHCP is selected, you do not have to enter them manually.

Select “Network Test” to check the network connectivity. The current network settings will appear.

If the test fails on the MAC Address, the MAC Address may not be written; the normally indicates a TV main board failure.

If the test fails on Domain Ping, check the internet cable connection to your wireless router or your firewall settings.
