Chapter. 3

Using Smart Station

What is Smart Station?

Smart Station refers to an advanced-concept monitor that offers enhanced usability by providing useful new functions such as Wireless Connection, USB Hub, and Mobile Control.
The system is optimized especially for notebook PC users.
Wireless Connection
Smart Station provides a clean cable-free working environment through the Wireless
Connection feature.
Insert a small wireless-connection dongle to your PC. The PC will automatically connect to
your Smart Station monitor without the need of a cable.
• The Smart Station monitor automatically detects and connects to a notebook PC (where the wireless-connection dongle is inserted) that is within range. The screen will automatically turn off when the notebook PC is moved out of range.
USB Display / USB Hub
Using older monitors can be inconvenient when using the USB Hub function because you need to connect a USB cable in addition to a display-output cable (D-sub, DVI, etc.).
The USB Display feature of the Smart Station monitor enables the USB Hub and display output to function at the same time using a single USB cable.
• The USB Hub provides three USB ports and one mobile port.
• Unlike notebook PCs and older monitors (that have a limited number of ports) being unable to connect to multiple source devices, the Smart Station monitor allows you to use multiple source devices at the same time using the HUB feature.
• If a wireless connection is established, you can use the wireless USB Hub function without the need to connect a USB cable.
19
Using Smart Station
Mobile Control
Connect the Smart Station monitor to your PC and mobile device such as a smartphone. You can control the mobile device using the keyboard and mouse connected to the PC. This
feature will allow you to use various services such as SNS more conveniently.
• Sharing a keyboard and mouse: You can control both your mobile device and PC using a single keyboard and mouse.
NOTE
• You can use three monitors by conguring the display settings.
Wireless Connection is supported on Series 7 only.
Mobile Control supports only mobile devices that have the USB Host function. Support for this feature
depends on the specications of your mobile device.
• Galaxy S2 is supported. Galaxy S2 from Sprint (available in the US market) is not supported because it
does not have the USB Host function.
• To nd if your mobile device supports USB Host, contact the device manufacturer.

Read the Following before Using the Wireless Connection / USB Hub Functions

1. To use the Wireless Connection / USB Hub functions, connect your PC to the Smart Station
monitor using the wireless-connection dongle or USB cable.
2. The USB Display function enables both the display output and USB Hub to function with a
single USB cable.
3. Using the USB Hub function is not possible if only an HDMI or HDMI-DVI cable is
connected (without a USB cable connected).
4. Playing games usually requires a high resolution and fast response rate. It is recommended to play games in HDMI mode connecting directly to a graphics card rather than using
Wireless Connection or USB mode. Playing games or videos is not supported while in Wireless Connection or USB mode on Windows XP or Vista.
5. When the Wireless Connection or USB mode is used for the rst time or the power-saving mode is deactivated on the PC, it may take a while for the Wireless Connection or USB
mode to be detected.
6. To use the USB Hub function when the Smart Station monitor is in USB mode (where a USB 3.0 cable is connected to your PC) or in Wireless Connection mode, it is recommended to connect the USB cable to the black USB 2.0 port on the monitor.
7. If the PC enters power-saving mode while the Smart Station monitor is in Wireless
Connection mode, the Wireless Connection will be disconnected and the USB Hub function
will be disabled.
NOTE
Wireless Connection is supported on Series 7 only.

Monitor IP Setup

1. Install the integrated software for the Smart Station monitor.
2. Go to Control Panel Change adapter settings.
3. You can see that the following two devices are displayed.
a. The user PC’s network device
b. The Smart Station monitor’s network device (USB to Ethernet adapter)
The two devices above refer to your PC’s LAN network device and your Smart Station
monitor’s network device.
NOTE
To access the Internet using the LAN network of the Smart Station monitor, you must congure the network as follows according to the type of IP you will be using.
Dynamic IP
Dynamic IP address mode automatically congures the network settings on the PC using data sent by a server that allocates an IP address. This is possible as a result of the “Dynamic Host Conguration Protocol (DHCP)” service. The service consists of three steps: an IP address allocation request is sent to the DHCP server when the PC boots up, the DHCP server that
receives the request transmits network information such as the IP address to the PC, and
the transmitted network information is automatically congured for the network settings on the PC. The DHCP service is convenient and useful especially in an environment where many PCs are used. Generally, the IP address should change each time the PC boots up (or an IP allocation is requested). In most cases, however, the existing IP address is re-allocated. An
Internet router performs two roles at the same time. It creates a private internal IP address
(NAT service) and automatically allocates the IP address to each PC (DHCP service).

Static IP
To congure the IP address (private or ofcial) on your PC, someone (usually a server) must allocate an IP address to the PC. An external IP address is allocated to you by your Internet service provider. An internal IP address is allocated to you by your Internet router. You can select whether to congure the IP address on the PC automatically or manually. The static IP address mode is used to manually enter an IP address. The static IP address mode is suitable if the IP address for the PC should not be changed (such as for a le sharing server) and
generally is not used, except under such special circumstances.

The stand generates heat. Why is that? Does this mean that the product is defective?
The upper part of the stand may become slightly hot at room
temperature. This occurs as the heat inside the stand releases naturally. The intensity of heat you feel can vary depending on whether the room is sealed or depending on the surrounding temperature. This does not indicate a defect. You can use the product without worry.

Trouble s h o o t i n g Guide
What are the different kinds of mobile devices that are compatible with Mobile
Control?
Can I use a standard USB cable instead
of the one provided in the package when using Mobile Control?
Most of the devices that provide the host function are compatible with Mobile Control. Compatible devices include PCs
that support the Windows operating system
and Samsung Galaxy S2 series and later.
To nd whether your device supports the
host function, contact the manufacturer.
NOTE
Mobile Control supports the keyboard and
mouse function for mobile devices allowing the product to interact with a connected mobile
device.
• For some mobile devices, only a single function
(keyboard function, etc.) from a range of functions of Mobile Control may be available. To nd whether your device supports the keyboard and mouse functions, contact the
manufacturer.
Mobile Control supports only mobile devices
that have the USB Host function. Support for this feature depends on the specications of your mobile device.
• Galaxy S2 is supported. Galaxy S2 from Sprint
(available in the US market) is not supported because it does not have the USB Host
function.
Mobile Control activates the host function
on a mobile device and shares data between devices. To use Mobile Control properly, you must use the provided mobile cable to connect your mobile device to the MOBILE port.
If using a standard USB cable, the Mobile
Control function will not be available.

Terminology

OSD(On Screen Display)
On screen display (OSD) allows you to customize on-screen settings to optimize the picture quality as required. You can change the screen brightness, tint, size and many other settings
using menus displayed on the screen.
HUB
HUB refers to a device that is a common connection point for multiple devices connected over a network. It is used to connect multiple PCs, video devices, ofce devices and/or LANs over a
single network.
Wireless-connection dongle - for Series 7 only
Dongle refers to a device that connects to an input/output port on a PC. It contains a security key or ID so that only the user that connects the wireless dongle to their PC can access a certain application. The wireless-connection dongle itself contains data required for a wireless
connection to work. It must be connected to your PC when a wireless connection is needed.
Gamma
The Gamma menu adjusts the grey scale that represents middle tones on the screen. Adjusting the brightness brightens the whole screen, but adjusting Gamma only brightens the medium brightness.
85
Appendix
Grey scale
Scale refers to levels of color intensity that show variations of color change from darker areas
to brighter areas on the screen. Changes to the screen brightness are expressed with black and white variation, and grey scale refers to the medium area between black and white. Changing the grey scale through Gamma adjustment will change the medium brightness on
the screen.
Scanning rate
Scanning rate, or refresh rate, refers to the frequency of screen refreshes. Screen data is
transmitted as it refreshes to display an image, although the refreshing is invisible to the naked eye. The number of screen refreshes is called scanning rate and is measured in Hz. A scanning rate of 60Hz means that the screen refreshes 60 times per second. The screen
scanning rate depends on the performance of the graphics cards in your PC and monitor.
Horizontal Frequency
Characters or images displayed on the monitor screen consist of numerous dots (pixels).
Pixels are transmitted in horizontal lines, which are then arranged vertically to create
an image. The horizontal frequency is measured in kHz and represents how many times
horizontal lines per second are transmitted and displayed on the monitor screen. A horizontal frequency of 85 means that the horizontal lines that make up an image are transmitted 85000
times per second. The horizontal frequency is indicated in 85kHz.
Resolution
Resolution is the number of horizontal pixels and vertical pixels that form a screen. It
represents the level of display detail. A higher resolution displays a greater amount of
information on the screen and is suitable for performing multiple tasks at the same time. E.g. A resolution of 1920 x 1080 consists of 1920 horizontal pixels (horizontal resolution) and 1080 vertical lines (vertical resolution).
Plug & Play
The Plug & Play feature allows the automatic exchange of information between a monitor and
PC to produce an optimum display environment. The monitor uses VESA DDC (international
standard) to execute Plug & Play.
MHL(MobileHigh-DenitionLink)
The MHL feature allows you to view videos and photos (saved on a connected mobile device that supports MHL) using the product screen.
Vertical Frequency
One image is made of numerous horizontal lines. The vertical frequency is measured in Hz and represents how many images can be created per second by those horizontal lines. A
vertical frequency of 60 means that an image is transmitted 60 times per second. The vertical
frequency is also called "refresh rate" and affects screen icker.
